  1. The vehicles really set Quake apart from its cousin "Doom," as levels with vehicles almost always involve huge outdoor areas swarming with bad guys.
  2. The game’s single-player mode is fantastic, effectively using the Doom 3 engine to make a game of its own. It really showcases the engine well and shows its versatility.
  3. From a technical standpoint, Quake 4 exceeds all expectations, especially in multiplayer. Considering the game’s excellent performance on even the most modest rigs, cumulated with the traditional gameplay and countless modding options, I have no doubt that Quake 4 is here to stay.
  4. Voice overs are (thankfully) done by actors who sound like they give a damn. Music is well done and used sparingly as environmental clues when some pivotal plot point is about to occur or to punctuate dramatic moments like the start of a boss battle.
  5. Quake 4 has set-pieces to knock your jaw off, provides flawless, timeless multiplayer and the Doom 3 engine does the business with the graphics, but the lack variety means the earth won't quite move for you. [GamesMaster]
  6. Kane and the battle against the Strogg are handled nicely, and there's enough direction placed in the story to accurately host an expansion pack (which you can probably bet will be on its way next year).

The Quake 4 we have is ultimately not the Quake 4 that was born of four years worth of development. There is just no way in hell. And from a developer this kind of game is appalling.

Really nice and rewarding departure from its predecessor - I'll risk much with this statement, but that's the way Doom 3 should be. AsReally nice and rewarding departure from its predecessor - I'll risk much with this statement, but that's the way Doom 3 should be. As previous reviews have stated: the game shines in design and some really fun action. It is in deed challenging, but rarely frustrating. Rarely I wanted to switch to god mode just to pass the level and move on. I didn't really focus on the (apparently good) dialogue, I just wanted action - and sure I got plenty of it).

Where it lets down, however, is game mechanics (try to hit the enemy with a grenade and you'll know what I mean) and unmached firepower/ammo to your enemies - requires some cleverness and quick thinking (also, you're usually slower). The AI makes your teammates wander around in circles while you take all the fire - not fun at all.

Great game. Single player campaign shines like no other id game previously but multiplayer scores only average. The graphics are amazing, the Great game. Single player campaign shines like no other id game previously but multiplayer scores only average. The graphics are amazing, the environments and details phenominal, music and sounds very high quality. I have always loved Raven games and this is no exception. In 2008, now that I finally have a system that can run this game at Ultra High, the game really comes alive. This is my third of fourth time playing it through, fantastic game. A huge step up from Doom 3 in technology and gameplay. A++. Expand

Overall an enjoyable game in respect to the story mode. Multiplayer leaves little to be desired; quite a step down from Quake III. Fantastic Overall an enjoyable game in respect to the story mode. Multiplayer leaves little to be desired; quite a step down from Quake III. Fantastic graphics with a lot of options so that the game can be ran well on most systems. I have an Athlon 3500 with 2 GB RAM and a 6800 GT video card and at 1600 x 1200 res I average between 30 and 60 FPS. The anti-aliasing is too much for my system though, but at high res, the pixels are small enough that it looks godd enough without AA or AF. The game graphics are extremely dark and I had to move the gamm slider up to see where I was going. Game has god sound, but almost no options aside from a master volume control. Sound options are important to me, because I hate loud in-game music and the effects are often too loud, the combined effect of the two often make the voices hard to hear. Very creative assortment of weapons. Why do only the pistol and machine gun have flashlights? This game is apparently set in the distant future, and currently night vision technology is thirty years old. The AI is fair but the variety of enemies is well thought out. Why are NPC chracters not packing good weapons? The best weapon they will have is the hyperblaster. The gore is also a good feature, other FPS games are too benign in that respect. Most of the story mode maps are Strogg bases. It would have been nice to have some decent outdoor maps, maybe some wild alien landscapes a la Halo. Expand

For a 17 year old piece of triple-A FPS entertainment, this holds up pretty well. It's also just fun to adjust settings on a relatively low performance laptop and get warned that ultra-high quality visuals will require "500 megabytes" of memory.

While action wise this game presents as a straightforward FPS, at 2nd to hardest difficulty it frustratingly tries to be a survival horror game. I've dipped into God mode multiple times to get through rooms drowned out by multiple spawned bullet sponge enemies.

Art design wise, this is pretty good advancement from the prequel, Quake 2 in terms of enemy design. Enviromentally, the themes get played out pretty quickly, with lots of crucification imagery, spurts of blood and body goo, and general mutilation. There are some nice set pieces, like a weird gigantic baby-monster that you disturbingly have to kill.

The rendering of human NPC is hit or miss, with some human faces unintentionally completely distorted from reality. Colors in the dark indoor scenes pop pretty well, while the outdoor levels are a monotonous dirt color scheme that (after 17 years) feels lazy and certainly hasn't aged well aesthetically.

In terms of the single player level design, maps are hit or miss. There's some very basic "green means goes" in terms of pathing on inside levels. The outside levels aren't as linear or easy to read, and I've jumped onto youtube around five times during this playthrough so far.

The difficulty ramps as you get deeper into the game - I've found the full weapons arsenal, but no ammo for most of the weapons. Also, on my setup and config at least, it seems the enemies get to hid in the darkness and corners but have perfect aim to your character. (I'm playing the campaign at 2nd highest difficulty.)

Other artificial difficulty factor - arbitrarily doors lock behind you, leaving you with little cover against bullet sponge semi-bosses. Also, ally NPC throw themselves into the line of fire, resulting in game-over states because they're too stupid to take cover.

Very boring first person shooter with stupid enemies, boring weapons and only a few good levels. It's one of the games you never play a second time. Many levels lack details and feel somewhat unfinished. The difficulty level is not constant. there are several unfair situations that can get newbies into trouble.

If you want a good game with detailed levels and creepy enemies, buy Doom 3.
