Greedy developers, boring and uninspired game, Poppy Playtime is the definition of why horror is dead. The fact this game even still counts as "horror" is an insult to the franchise. The game isn't scary, the plot is unoriginal and boring, and the monster designs aren't scary or intimidating in the slightest. Their only purpose is to look appealing as merch for children. Poppy Playtime isn't the only one, but it's ruining horror. I genuinely hope this game never gets finished. Expand

is it even possible for a good game to ruin itself quicker than poppy playtime did? I'm not letting the various controversies surrounding MOBgames cloud my opinion, and I still dont like this game. now, the first chapter was amazing, it had a fantastic atmosphere but was way too short, but when Poppy herself actually started speaking, I was concerned. the isolation of chapter 1 is whatis it even possible for a good game to ruin itself quicker than poppy playtime did? I'm not letting the various controversies surrounding MOBgames cloud my opinion, and I still dont like this game. now, the first chapter was amazing, it had a fantastic atmosphere but was way too short, but when Poppy herself actually started speaking, I was concerned. the isolation of chapter 1 is what made it work, but chapter 2 just throws all of that out of the window as Mommy long legs and Poppy speak and completely remove the great atmosphere of chapter 1, and not just that, it's kind of sad that indie horror games today can't even swear because they're taylered towards children. the genre showed so much promise with games like BATIM and Tattletail being fantastic, this game represents everything wrong with modern indie horror. and eventually it just kind of starts to do whatever the other indie horror icons do and doesn't try anything new. hell, it even copies from itself at points. I might be reviewing this too early since only 2 chapters are out, but it seems like this game is going down the same hole as hello neighbor, since a spinoff was released before the main game was even close to being finished. if the next chapters are as great as chapter 1, I will remove this review, but as it stands, this is my actual least favorite horror game ever (Secret Neighbor doesn't count because it's just flat out not a horror game) Expand

The game honestly looked okay when it first released, but at this point it is just bad. I'm not going to go over the old controversy because that's pretty much over at this point, but I am going to point out the many stupid things the company behind this game has done and is continuing to do today.

I'm not going to go over the old controversy because that's pretty much over at this point, but I am going to point out the many stupid things the company behind this game has done and is continuing to do today.

First of all, Mob Games treats Poppy Playtime like it's the biggest franchise ever, and they've only got TWO games. Ever since the first "demo" dropped, the company announced a movie, started endlessly dropping merch, and, of course, did NFTs. In addition to this, all the things they're selling are at ABSURD prices, like seriously, who wants to buy a $70 Huggy plushie? This all shows that Mob Games either wants big cash, or is desperately trying to keep their game alive before it dies. And speaking of the game, the game itself isn't that good. The chase sequence in the first chapter was what got everyone hooked, but everything else is completely uninspired.

Scary toys possessed by dead people? FNAF.
Abandoned location where everyone dissapeared? Bendy and the Ink Machine.
Chapter-based series and puzzle-game layout with chase at the end? Bendy and the Ink Machine.
Lore hidden everywhere so GT can make a vid on it? FNAF.
The whole "kids stuff but creepy" topic? LITERALLY EVERY GAME THAT COPIED FNAF.

In short, the game is just another wanna-be FNAF that got trendy because of the same old tactic. The developers (or some of them) are attempting to keep their game from dying by marketing as much as possible, something that I feel will backfire on them and make their game die quicker. If they change their ways, who knows? I could play chapter 3. But at the rate it's going, I bet all we're gonna get is a $50 chapter 3 with 50 new merch drops.

    *sigh*

The company behind this game bullies other animators / video game designers. They employ a litany of shady business practices on youtube. They put out insulting, insincere statements.

Plus the game is uninspired abject garbage.

You're basically spending 5 dollars on a demo. The puzzles require barely any thought, there's only a single chase scene involving what's SUPPOSED to be the villan of the chapter, I could go on. a complete cash grab and a shady marketing scheme. and the chapters will also cost money. and right now chapter two is selling for $10 for about two hours of game play, most of which is simply boring and repetitive. not two mention the shady developers of the game. I don't recommend it

    English:
The game is about 30 to 45 minutes long, you get to see the enemy once or twice and they introduce the puzzle mechanics. That's about it. What should've been a demo, is 4 € on Steam. Despite its short playtime, the developer tries to sell tons of merch and NFTs to an obviously juvenile target audience. Disgusting.

this game is a blatant scam, 5 dollars for a mediocre, 30-minute, tech demo, the worst part of all is that the game is now free, so anyone who bought the game before it went free was just scammed out of 5 dollars :/. the company behind the game is just as scummy, I'd suggest anyone who reads this and hasn't heard of all the controversy behind this game please look it up. it seems that thisthis game is a blatant scam, 5 dollars for a mediocre, 30-minute, tech demo, the worst part of all is that the game is now free, so anyone who bought the game before it went free was just scammed out of 5 dollars :/. the company behind the game is just as scummy, I'd suggest anyone who reads this and hasn't heard of all the controversy behind this game please look it up. it seems that this game was targeted towards children in a predatory manor, the design of huggy wuggy was made just to sell toys, and on the MOB games YouTube channels there are lots of poppy playtime animations targeted towards small children. the only I give this "game" a 1 instead of 0 is because the "game" itself isn't really that bad, it's painfully mediocre, but not bad, it's also well-polished. overall, don't support a scummy company by buying this game, just play something else, something better. This game has lured kids in like the damn Pied Piper. I don't think that video games should be kept out of the hands of kids, but THIS type of game should not be given to kids.

Mascot horror dominates the video game industry, but this game takes the cake with its unique use of the trend. The game effectively uses its strong points to its advantage to bring fear into players. Instead of using jumpscares to create fear, it builds tension to spook the player. It creates an illusion of being safe when in reality, the danger is still lurking within. As this is the first chapter, it is relatively short, only ranging from 30 minutes to 1 hour depending on the player. Even with its short time frame, it packs an impressive punch into what's to come into future chapters. Poppy Playtime could easily be one of the best indie games released this year from its production quality and effective use of scares.
