Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a marvel of a little game that wins at being a “yoyovania.” The yoyo combat and progression are superb, its level design utilizing novel traversal elements without repetitious fluff, and its charm is off the charts. It’s no walk in the park, but it’s worth the payoff if you want a game that is a nostalgia bomb of classic Zelda fused with a yoyo thematic.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo lived up to all my expectations, and is one of the very best Metroidvanias I've ever played.

Pipistrello and The Cursed Yo-Yo is a must-play for anyone who loves Metroidvanias or classic Zelda-style adventures. It's full of heart, brimming with quirk, and clearly made with love. The visuals are gorgeous, the world is rich, and every mechanic feels thoughtfully crafted. It's absolutely time well spent.

With charming pixel art, clever level design, and a unique yo-yo-based mechanic that evolves throughout the game, this adventure blends social satire and humor into a well-paced experience, though it suffers from occasional unclear objectives and a couple of weaker levels.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a 2D adventure game that should be on everyone's wishlist. Who doesn’t want to play a retro-inspired yoyovania?

If you’re jonesing for a fresh action adv…yoyovania, then Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo will absolutely fit the bill. The game steadily grants you new abilities as you traverse a charming contemporary world which I would dare compare to the one found in Nintendo’s Earthbound. As the adventure heads to its conclusion, it becomes a test of all the skills you’ve accrued along the way. Thorough players will find every badge, pay off every contract, conquer every mini-game and collect every Rose and BP shard, but even if you don’t, at least you’ll be treated to a grand story about an unlikely hero with a heart of gold.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo delivers a creative and charming experience, blending clever puzzles, rewarding exploration, and a versatile combat system. The inventive use of the yoyo as both a weapon and a tool keeps gameplay dynamic, while the world of New Jolt City — with its charismatic characters, cultural references, and retro aesthetic — builds a unique and memorable universe. Despite a few rough edges, the game stands out for its originality and the relaxed, playful way it tells its story.

Folks, Gordon Gekko had it wrong. It’s not greed that’s good, but the yoyo, which “clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.” And if those words sound as hyperbolic as they do in Wall Street, just wait until you get your hands on Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo and see how gloriously right this weird, wonderful yoyo-centric adventure is.

Pispistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a fantastic top down adventure game that deserves to be considered in the same echelon as classic Nintendo titles. It takes the traditional Zelda framework and reimagines it to create a world that is incredibly fun to explore. The thrill of nailing the yoyo traversal mechanics remains throughout and while the combat can be a little repetitive at times, this is equally the case with Link's various adventures. All in all, this is peak indie gaming and comes very highly recommended.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is an amazing adventure that elevates its inspirations to a new level of creativity. I was pleasantly challenged throughout the campaign, yet each milestone provided a reward that made it tough to put down. The surprisingly deep narrative is the icing on top, delivering nuanced moments of introspection I did not expect. Hopefully, this is not the last time we see Pippit. Who am I kidding? Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a certified banger, so we will most definitely see him again, if only to remind everyone how cool yoyos are.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is an absorbing action-adventure that combines Game Boy Advance vibes with inventive yoyo-based combat and a supply of clever puzzles. Despite the sporadic difficulty spikes, the game’s heartfelt story and explorable city make this a gem that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a metroidvania with art direction reminiscent of 1990s handheld games and a huge map packed with puzzles, secrets, and backtracking. The system of upgrading via contracts is original and introduces significant strategic choices, while yoyo tricks offer a variety of approaches to exploration and combat. The level design is precise and the badges allow you to deeply customize your play style. A brilliant game, with attention to detail and full of nerdy humor, it doesn’t revolutionize the genre, but enhances its features.

Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is a faithful tribute to the Game Boy Advance era and avoids typical neo-retro errors with a lot of flair. From the soundtrack to game mechanics, and from clever puzzle design to random complexity spikes, older players will feel right at home while younger people will discover a difficult-yet-rewarding time capsule.

A fun, unique little Zelda-like with all the quirk and style of a 90s heyday Game Boy game, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo is going to scratch that itch if you like 'em retro. However, tricky controls and high difficulty are going to see many leave it languishing on the shelf after a few hours, alongside their old Yoyo.

While the core gameplay loop of Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo feels dated, there’s a lot to enjoy in the retro-inspired experience that Pocket Trap have crafted. The level design and puzzles, badge and upgrade system, and art design make it worth a look if you’re craving an old-school adventure. There’s a great game in here, but it’s sometimes held back from shining through.

If you’re feeling nostalgic for the pixel graphics and blaring horns of GBA games, Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo scratches that itch — and has some clever new ideas, too. It won’t actually make you better at using a yo-yo, but it’s pretty darn fun to have one in a video game.

Those who never got a chance to experience the Game Boy Advance in all its glory? Look no further than Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo. It’s a wonderful blend of both old and new, and is one of the best adventures I’ve been on this year. I can’t wait to come back to this one when I’m even older and look at it just as fondly as I remember my childhood, as it evoked those same exact feelings.
