This masterpiece is more like an AVG than traditional role playing game. With luxurious voice casting and amazing story supported by psychological and philosophical metaphors, it definitely provides wonderful experience.

The story follows the protagonist and his friends who dive into the rumored midnight channel, where victims who appear on the midnight channel are murdered when they appear. That's the basic as to what I can give about the story without spoilers, but believe me, the story has some interesting twist and turns in the plot and its characters depth.

Game-play wise, you play as a high school student where you take part in classes and activities which further your "stats" -including your courage, knowledge, diligence, understanding and expression - which contribute to dialogue options when you interact with others. There's also the social link aspect where you hang out with a particular character and unlock better fusions when fusing personas as well as learning about that characters struggles and how they grow as you hang out with them.

The game is most rewarding when you replay it on New Game + since some Social Links require you to have a certain status within your stats, but spending another 60 + hours on New Game + is very rewarding when you unlock better fusions and abilities.

I give this game a 9/10. The graphics haven't aged well, but the story is still the same and the character are just as fun and interesting as ever.

Persona 4 Golden is an amazing game that can now be played on PC. The game was released a long time ago, so I do not dispute that there are more "technically and graphically cool" games. Far more comedic than 5 or 3, with far more group-hangout events. The music is fantastic as always, with tracks that you will find impossible not to hum to. When the credits roll you'll find yourself teary-eyed as you realize you'll never get to experience this game for the first time again. Expand

A great game finally where people can play it. My favorite of the Persona series since it doesn't make you feel like crap or treat your character like they're "just a kid". Only real down side is the added in character Marie is pretty meh compared to the add ons of 3 and 5

Persona is one of the well-made Japanese RPG games.
Of course, the most interesting persona series is three and five.

Honestly I was really impressed by the murder mystery, it was well done. Moreover the cast was really well put together, each character felt unique and like they could be real people. The amazing voice acting really drove it home. This is a fantastic coming of age story, unique to JRPGs in that it gives you choices that were usually only to be found in Western RPGs. Moreover the cast was really well put together, each character felt unique and like they could be real people. The amazing voice acting really drove it home. This is a fantastic coming of age story, unique to JRPGs in that it gives you choices that were usually only to be found in Western RPGs. When everything was said and done, I found myself wishing for a part 2 a later years, where my PC stayed friends with the cast, and married his sweetheart Naoto Shirogane.

The gameplay was good enough to stay interesting, enemy weaknesses added a tactical element to gampley, but like most JRPGs the combat got a little repetitive. Dungeons were similar to old school rpg dungeons, like the original Elder Scrolls, and were of a rather dated design, with only two really standing out with any sort of uniqueness. I'd say that the dungeons were the down side. Being someone who grew up with the low-poly era of gaming e.g. FF7, Metal Gear Solid 1--the graphics didn't bother me that much, the models are lower end PS2 looking graphics, but there is still a nice anime art style that gives the characters a lot more life. Also ATLUS did put work into the back grounds, to make them HD.

Really this is a game with a lot of heart, I recommend it even to people who don't really like JRPGs as this one has much more character driven agency--similar to Mass Effect, which also means that there is a lot of value coming from replayability.

In a screwed up world, where we are getting game like The Last of Us 2, which are wholly nihilistic, with violence only included to make pretentious 'suffering porn', this older game shows us that you can have a darker themed game with a lot of light in it. With the sales and response to this game on Steam, I think ATLUS should think about bringing the other titles to the PC as well. I think this game is a solid 9/10.

I started the Persona series with 5, and once Golden came out on Steam I figured I'd try it out. 30 hours in and I'm not disappointed. Each of the three dungeons I've been to so far have been challenging and, but oh so satisfying once I beat them. Grinding is a little repetitive but you can get into a rhythm with it and knowing a Shadow's weakness helps out a lot. Each of the three dungeons I've been to so far have been challenging and, but oh so satisfying once I beat them. Grinding is a little repetitive but you can get into a rhythm with it and knowing a Shadow's weakness helps out a lot. I enjoy the shuffle time feature, I like having the chance to decide what I need most at that moment, is there a rare Persona with awesome stats that'd help me out perfectly for the next boss? Or am I short on cash and need a bit of a boost? There's always a useful card to be found which makes beating Shadows fun and rewarding. Sometimes you'll encounter a Shadow that'll kill you and your party in one hit, which isn't the nicest way to find out you need to raise your level a bit. The fact you have to restart from the beginning of the current floor every time you die makes dying feel frustrating, but it can also strengthen your resolve to survive and retain any cash, loot or experience you've gained on that floor already.

I really enjoy the cast of characters in this game, the Investigation Team; each member is charming and unique in their own way. Everyone gets their own moments in the spotlight, and seeing everyone face their darkest side of their personality at the end of their respective dungeons is a nice way to show the player who this character truly is, and it's satisfying seeing them come to their own conclusions on how they need to accept this side of themselves. I found Kanji's observations on the concept of manliness to be incredibly touching and mature, even if his Shadowy self's portrayal as a camp, lewd, gay man might now be seen as offensive to some. Yosuke's creepiness/pervy-ness is also annoying at times, and the scene in the tent with Kanji is quite cringe-worthy, but he redeems himself with some mature, genuine moments of connection with other characters. Though some attitudes may be outdated, and some of the humour may not have carried over well from Japan, the game is 12 years old, which makes it somewhat forgivable.

The daily grind of going to school, working a part time job, raising a social stat if you need a certain level of courage or understanding to talk to someone and sleeping, at which point the dynamic, frantic feeling of needing to solve a murder mystery can disappear, but raising a social link is always fun, with funny, heart-warming/breaking scenes coming from it. With every level of social link raised, I always feel closer to the characters, which helps make them feel real, making me work to earn their friendship (and helpful bonuses during combat).

In conclusion, this game is great, the characters are fun, the music is sublime, apart from questionable, outdated humour at times, and some repetitiveness, this is a thoroughly enjoyable game, and if you've never played the original I'd highly suggest you pick it up!

(Oh, and by the way, Chie is best girl)

This is the best part to introduce to the newbie, but not the best part in the series. Too far as 5 games began to move away from the classic smt style.
More vibrant colors, communication with shadows is ambiguous, for some characters they open a new facet, for some, so understandable problems.
Marie is a slightly empty character, but it's nice that in this part they added something new

Marie is a slightly empty character, but it's nice that in this part they added something new and did not just make a port with ps2, but they did not reach the elaboration of new stories of the level of a female hero in 3 parts.
As for the port, this is an excellent port, but there were problems with the rollers at the start, but they have already been fixed.
Of course this is not a remake of the fifth engine, but still good.
I hope that if part 3 is released on the PC, it will be a version with PSP, but with a redesigned open world and the answeh epilogue. I’ll be a little frustrated if they just portort the answer, having lost a lot of the content of the portable version and team management.

Maravellous story and characters. The rock-themed and instrumental music work wonders too. The graphics aren't great for modern standards, but given it was a port they work well enough. The combat is great, classic turn-based no major problems, but the dungeons for the shadow "people" are repetitive.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is great. The story is very intriguing at the beginning, most of the characters are pretty likable and for the most part the game still holds up a decade later when the original came out years ago. But, there are some things that reeeeaaally don't hold up anymore with specific characters such as Teddie. He is ok at the beginning but quickly becomes the creepiest character and really takes away from the story because it's so random and completely unnecessary. Another character is Marie, who is basically the purpose of Golden adding extra content and a whole new dungeon and character to experience from the original one and she is SUPER UNINTERESTING. And you have to max her confidant to unlock January, otherwise it's just like the original. Every time I spent time to increase her social rank, I felt like I was grinding a story I didn't care about and I was skipping all of her dialogue because it's so dated and just tedious to sit through. She also has these poems that really don't amount to anything in my opinion. Yosuke is another character that's kinda unlikable but he has redeeming qualities sorta. After that it comes down to voice acting and the voice actor for Chie is so ridiculously cartoony it doesn't fit with anyone else in the game and it makes her very unlikable even though she's an interesting character for the most part, but in the end it's held up by the voice acting for her character. That's pretty much it for the characters, now the story. The story is consistently good to a point and that's in December. You have a big showdown and it's really crazy and lives are on the line and I was on the edge my seat for this. But after, you have a certain string of dialogue come up and you have to answer like 8 questions in this exact correct order, otherwise you don't get the TRUE ending of the game. It's almost a double edged sword where on one hand, I find that really unique and cool that you have to figure it out but on the other hand, it makes no sense for them to expect you to get that correct without looking it up. I didn't know that until I accidentally beat the game within 40 hours of a 60 hour game and it just ends with like no resolve and is pretty confusing. So I had to go back, look up the correct answers and I got to the true ending. But that took me another try because at the end when you say bye to LITERALLY EVERY CONFIDANT IN THE GAME, it somehow expects you to go back to Junes and randomly find out that you didn't actually kill the final boss and you'll have to do ANOTHER dungeon and fight ANOTHER FINAL BOSS. It's kind of ridiculous by the end on how much is just padding to a point and is kind of frustrating. But with all of those complaints, I still loved the game. The characters that are great really hold the game up such as Yukiko, Rise, Kanji, Naoto, Naoke, Ai, Daisuke and Kou. All of them really make this game special and super fun. Now to be fair I did play Persona 5: Royal and that was my introduction to Atlus games and I immediately got this to fill the scramble sized hole in my heart. And I think that's why I'm so "harsh" on this game because P5: Royal is so much better at literally everything but if it wasn't for the mistakes in this one then 5 wouldn't be so good I think. But overall, I still highly recommend this game to almost anyone honestly. Expand

I just love this game. It's awesome. When you play this game, you actually feel like you're going through an adventure. Every decission you make seems to be important. And if you make a bad decission, the game will let you know it. For example: You wasted to much time and didn't explore the dungeon enough and you hardly have any time. All your friends will remind you about saving the victim the whole time (yeah, there's some sort of deadline). Maybe you even start panicking?
But now a little bit about the technical stuff. This game doesn't need a PC with an RTX 3090 and a Ryzen 9 5950X. Almost every laptop should run this game.
Actually, I don't have much to critize besides of one point: There are no auto saves. Sometime you grind about 3 hours and turn of you PC and forgot to save the game. Now your whole progress is lost. But you can't save your game randomly. You can only save your game on some spots in the game. For example in your house or in the space before a dungeon.
But that is actually everything negative, I could say about the game. Well you see, that I love this game sooo much. And yeah, it's even my favourite game of all time. So I would recommend this game to everyone, even if their favourite genre aren't JRPGs. And thank you for reading my review!

P4G is a very good jRPG with top-class characters. That game has the best team spirit in every persona's games. The story is quite interesting and on a good level, but not that good as the story in P5R. In my opinion, that game is much better than Persona 3 Fes in every aspect, but not good enough to compare with Persona 5 Royal.

The system of times and days of the Persona series is simply fascinating, they introduce you to a problem and a deadline, so it's up to you to decide when to go to the dungeons and that gives you a great feeling of freedom and immersion. Another highlight is Social Links, an excellent method of making you care about the characters and knowing their traumas and problems, and you can even develop loving relationships between them. The soundtrack like the other games in the series is incredible nor is there much to comment on just search and listen. Expand

I should have paid at least $60 for this. This game is not just a game, it is such a golden experience and I highly recommend it. Here is to hoping Persona 5 gets ported to steam and/or other consoles. Games allow the opportunity to grant you, the player, a unique sense of immersion and attachment to the events happening in it. Truly great games use this trait and utilize it to its fullest extent. Persona 4 Golden did this. It's no slouch in the storytelling department, and handles more introspective themes, unafraid of diving past it's bright and yellow motif to explore darker subjects if need be, but handles these elements with a gentle restraint, just enough to get its underlying message and thematic meaning across to you. On the other hand, if you analyse each scene in this game word-for-word in the same way you would for other forms of media, you could easily identify minor flaws all throughout the game. No, the true magic of this game lies in the way it makes you feel . This game, considered as whole, absolutely dwarfs the sum of its individual parts. In it, you had a chance to relate to all the main characters throughout the 80+ hours you spend, talking with them while basked in the dazzling daylight in the outdoor shopping district on a sunny day, or in the cool, subdued hours of the night, with a stream flowing lazily in the riverbank by your side. Through time, you saw their true, unvarnished self, pouring out their deepest concerns, big or small, to you, and through all that time, you saw them change, striving forward, from studying their best with you to achieve better grades, to truly defeating the shadows of their past and present, and rising out of it all with an evolved persona, someone ready to be true and to face the world as it is, as they truly are. You enjoyed vibrant, exciting outings filled with genuine happiness some days, and on others you somberly faced, head on, their most troubled issues, helping them to eventually rise above it all. I would be remiss to say that it was only the main characters that were so. In reality, the dreary, roughneck town of Inaba that you assumed it was when you first arrived on the train would slowly blossom into a place with more people to explore and relate to than what an entire 80+ hour story playthrough would allow. In my personal opinion, I would say the combat system isn't too demanding, when considering its parent franchise, and it can be rather fun. The music stands on a league of its own, and the game takes its soundtrack like it does its story, embodying its core concepts as musical themes, [I'll face myself] and [Reach out to the truth], allowing you to get attached to it through its different variations and renditions, and at the end, those musical themes evoke a sense of meaning just from listening to them on its own. All this is but a mere summary of how I felt and thought at the end. Simple numbers or ratings wouldn't properly convey my final, full opinion. I, as one player, went through and felt so much in this game, and in the end, I can only give you, the reader, a heartfelt recommendation to play it, and experience it all for yourself. Expand

Still, given how old the game is, I can't criticize the graphics too much. I loved the story. It built up the tension effectively and had a very satisfying ending. The story never became boring to me, even though it takes around 100 hours to finish the game because there were plot twists and exciting turns within the story. It got more exciting with time. Next to this, the social sim mechanics kept the game perfectly enjoyable. I absolutely love all the characters, their interactions with the MC, and their character developments. I played the English dub version and the voice acting was very well done. Lastly, I absolutely loved the soundtrack. None of the other games made me feel so much with its music. Extremely impressive how well the music fits the mood. The hard rock instrumental during fights, the jazzy smooth music at times, everything was on point.
The only con I can give is the side content. I love long games with lots of side content. However, P4G's side missions were very stale and boring. Still, this did not create any problems for me because the rest of the game was immaculate and had a very long playtime. I just ended up ignoring the side quests so there is no problem at all.

    Final Score - (9) Great

    In-Depth Review (Spoiler Free)
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Visuals - 7.5/10 - (Good)
Some aspects such as models, animation, and some textures make it quite clear that P4 is a PS2 game originally. But the team at Atlus managed to bring the game into HD quite well by making everything look quite sharp and clean. And considering the game is not demanding at all, playing it in 4k is quite easy and the best way to experience it.
Sadly the game doesn't offer support for 21:9 monitors which sometimes can break the quite immersive and absorbing atmosphere of the game.

    Gameplay - 8.5/10 - (Very Good)
The game can be summarized as the fusion of J-RPG and Life Sim. The game has it own calendar which is followed day by day and with certain events set to happen on certain days of the calendar, and when playing in between these predetermined events you can take part in many different activities which consist of working on your own character and leveling up your traits, your relationship with your friends and completing side quests which reward you with items.
When it comes to the combat system, the game follows the same way a classic J-RPG's would, with certain twists to make it a bit more unique, such as elements that have their own strengths and weaknesses. The combat only happens in areas which would be this game system of dungeons, and it works as a building with many floors which you traverse to find the stairs to the next level and throughout all levels you can find enemies to battle and items to take. Everything is easy to understand and flows quite well.
At times the game can get a bit grindy and annoying in the dungeons so having the option to go out of dungeons and complete activities with your friends is quite welcome and helps balance the flow of the game.

    Story - 9/10 - (Great)
Persona 4 story is a very good one, full of twists and turns, might not be the most original one but is very well told and keep the player interested throughout the game. The main story aside, the other narrative that makes persona 4 great are the characters you interact with on your journey which are called "social links", there are 22 in total, and participating in them will let you know more about the characters and form bonds with those people. The only complaint to make about the story is not having a menu with info about all the characters you meet and are involved with the main quest, since you meet so many people in the game, names start to feel hazy and forgotten by the end of the story.

Combat itself is great and uses the '1 More' mechanic where you get an extra turn for striking weaknesses, but the story was keeping me going through the mediocre gameplay. The game is divided into 2 sections, the life-sim and the dungeon crawling. The life-sim section kept me going because it connects to the gameplay, allowing you to make stronger personas when your bond enhances and you get to experience really meaningful personal stories related to each character. The stories of each individual are all really good, but the overarching murder mystery in the small town of Inaba keeps you hooked from start to finish. Through the genius calendar system, the plot progresses at around a month per dungeon finishing in a full year. This game tackles various different themes because of it's structure, such as Kanji's struggles with his masculinity or Naoto's struggles with gender inequality in the workplace. The Investigation Team is written so masterfully with every member feeling so close and authentic, and oh man Teddie's arc was something you kind of see coming but is played out so well. Watching the anime doesn't allow you to fully grasp the smaller details of the plot that makes the game so perfect, and oh my god dude; the soundtrack. The soundtrack is PERFECT. They went with a lot of vocal tracks that are all bops, with my favorite being the boss theme for Marie. There is SO SO MUCH more I want to say about this game but it's better if you just play it yourself. The story made me cry on at least 3 occasions and it's coming to Xbox soon and it's on PC right now so if you make the decision in your life to watch a TV show with no substance, it's pretty much the same investment as a couple seasons of a TV show but with more thinking.

The original Persona 4 was my perfect game and when I played P4G, my mind was blown that my perfect game can be made even better

A steal for $20. Comparable to 5 in every aspect other than graphics. Difficulty is much more akin to the mainline games, the story is funny a lot of the time and interesting. The game’s true ending requires very specific options to be picked which is annoying. Absolutely fantastic game for getting into the franchise with the recent release everywhere.

For a game with the title of "Golden", I would argue the best term to describe it would be "Rose-coloured" (to borrow terms from Hyouka). This is a game that while painfully slow to start, throughout the journey leaves you with the warmest, brightest, most nostalgic smile a game can grant. The emotion that best conveys my feelings and thoughts for this game is "Joy." The emotion that best conveys my feelings and thoughts for this game is "Joy." This is a game whose characters, whose school trips, whose hijinks, whose music will make you feel joy despite the relatively serious subject matter that it centers the main plot around and I wouldn't have it any other way for this title. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is that the combat & dungeon crawling is dreadful in this title, I had to play another SMT game just to have a refresher of what good combat is like. Pro-tip, play it on high money generation, low experience gen, and then deal high damage as a player so you can spend as little time as possible in dungeons and get everything you need. Expand

It’s a strong showing that is genuinely fun to return to, even if I think certain characters’ stories deserved better representation and development. I’m glad a whole new audience will get to visit Inaba.

Persona 4 Golden was largely considered one of the PlayStation Vita’s must-play titles and for good reason. Inaba’s small-town feel, the fantastic cast, incredibly personable dialogue, excellent audio, and strong gameplay combine to make the game a superb all-around experience. Though there are no distinct advantages of playing this version over the Vita one, its release on PC should be rightfully celebrated for giving a whole new set of RPGamers the chance to play a game that resonates just as strongly now as it first did.
