The Diablo-like game we needed but do not deserved.
Graphic - really good, but animation a little bit unpolished
Gamplay - everything you would expect from aRPG
    Story - quite good

This is the best in its class, and with continuing support, it will remain so. An upcoming sequel will help alleviate the feature bloat of such a long lifetime for a diverse and comprehensive gameplay loop with as many extended layers of complexity as one could only dream of. This game will live on in the history of video games as an exemplar of a genre it helped cultivate into maturity.

    Brutal. Dark. Complicated.
It's Diablo II on steroids, in a good way. If you feel that Diablo III dissapointed you, this game is for you.

Best ARPG on the market for years. PoE 2 will be much better than Diablo 4 too and still hold the #1 spot for sure. - The class and skill diversity is wild.
    - Contrary to popular opinion. The game isn't really that hard to get into, the only drawback is the amount of 3rd party sites which may be necessary to follow a build.
    - The work and research you put into a build is rewarded by the outcome of said build.
    - There are millions of different items, and hundreds of different uniques,
    - It is easy to see what is happening on the screen.

    Cons

    - Some rare enemies can be more problematic than unique bosses. This is especially the case in newer leagues as they have not been balanced. Some of the rares can often kill even the tankiest of builds.
    - Some affixes are poorly balanced and over-tuned. For example, corrupting blood has always been a strong affix and even has certain builds' attempt to counter this by making themselves immune to the affix over playing through it.
    - The lighting in the Sirus fight is abysmal and this is not helped by the floor textures used which overlap with his abilities.

Despise I haven't touched endgame yet, I've played for few weeks this game and I managed also to get past through the huge lagspikes that the game had.

First things first, I applaud the developers for making a very deep game: each class, which are very well detailed in stats and mechanics, have their own passives distributed in a way very similar to FFX spheregrid (basically it's one huge grid that every class share, but each class starts from a different position), while skills are instead splitted from the character under the form of orbs that you attach to weapons and armor (same for other types of orbs). Each skill orb also level up on their own (which I think is up to 20) and it's pretty easy to level them since you only have to kill enemies and grind like crazy, without mentioning that it only matters on your stats in order to use them: this means you can potentially equip any kind of skill or armor, all depending on your 3 stats (strength, intelligence, dexterity). However, considering you don't upgrade your stats with points, you'll most likely focus on one set of skill.

Secondly, the game also well implemented into the online, with villages and such as hubs to gather your teammates, and with a strange mechanic of not having gold in order to trade because you use items (orbs mostly) in order to buy or sell items, same thing with other players: I see this is a way of avoiding goldsellers and I'm not entirely sure how this works yet, since I hardly trade with other players.

Lastly the game plays very smoothly controls so good, with also a good amount of challenge in some sections that really pays off: items are as usual are divided in colors for their quality and the areas are big enough for letting you do some exploration (and more grinding).

And all this is in a good F2P game, with basically nothing to upgrade your stats: it's only cosmetics and skins, which is admirable considering almost everything is open and there's almost no limitations to anything as far as I could see.

Which brings me to this point: this game should have been a retail from the start

The cash shop hasn't much to offer and annoyingly you can only play online, despite you'll ONLY see other people on villages, wondering why this isn't retail instead so we could also play offline, especially because of immense lags that still happens whenever I play alone.

Also, for this next part I have to mention Torchlight 2 which is another indie ARPG, and the reason of mentioning is because PoE is considered highly complex and deep, while it's not: the huge grid in PoE is all show considering you'll just want to maximize by going one path, (while TL2 has far more depth with each stats giving different stats all together), without forgetting that each class in PoE, despite having different starts, they'll basically get passive boosters for damage and extra stats for their main stats, which only really determines their armor, some skills they can use and their weapons (which is the same in TL2, except it also grants additional stats such as critical chance, health, armor, weapon damage, magical damage, etc)

It's also true that both games offer various way to play your class by giving them different weapons and using a different path in the grid...but in PoE (IN MY OPINION) feels less rewarding since you basically gain nothing but passive bonuses, and for skills you either buy them or find them during your dungeon runs or quests, and they are many to find which is a nice touch (while for TL2, at each level up you gain 5 stat points and 1 skill points, plus 1 from fame, to use on either your active or passive spells, for a total of 30 unique skills for each class).

My main motive of using TL2 as a comparison is also because people believe this game being the best ARPG ever, but it's not. It's good, yes, and very well made, and has some features that TL2 could have used from this game too (the online is better implemented in PoE), but feels unrewarding at times and less complex than TL2, an indie (retail) ARPG game, almost beating him on every level (almost: TL2 hasn't the same graphics and it's much easier to play).

But to keep it simple, PoE is a great F2P ARPG game, with interesting new ideas that aren't always good and some mechanics that aren't as complex as some other games have done, and I will happily suggest this game to whoever wants a good action rpg game that has well made f2p mechanics, with the only flaws (IN MY OPINION) are the less rewarding mechanics in the level up, massive grindings for both you and your skills, with the latter being completely separated from the class itself, and and a lack on complexity that can be a benefit or not.

Give it a look as it's a great f2p gane, especially if you already downvoted my review, and see for yourself instead: you'll be either immensively satisfied, or terribly disappoi

Upgrades obtained through donations and microtransactions are purely aesthetical and have no advantage over regular gear, so..... that means it's really "free". Tackling the gameplay aspect, it plays really well, it offers deep character development via the huuuuge passive skill tree (a la Final Fantasy X) and a wide array of active skill gems, wich level up as you pass by wrecking havoc. This is one of the defining features of how skills are handleled to you in this game, in other games "skill gems" offer passive bonuses, while active skills are gained through character leveling via skill tree; Path of exile goes the other way around, giving the skill tree purely passive bonuses, while active skills must be earned through gems obtained quests or random drops, and socketed into specific gear in order for it to be active. It's a bold strategy, and one that may not convince a lot of players, but it's functional overall, and even more importand: it's addictive and engaging (the only quality action RPGs need to succeed).
Character classes are interesting, they have a particular charisma, being gritty and enchanting at the same time, with fancy names like Maraunder (instead of the generic title of barbarian), Shadow, etc. 6 initial clases that are aligned to 1 or 2 of the main stats: Strenght, Dexterity and Intelligence. All classes have access to all passive skills in the skill tree, with the only difference being the point at which they start. That means that role playing is not completely restricted, with options for melee characters to have magic and viceversa. It's up to you to decide if this feature is a strong point because of the freedom it provides, or a weak spot in how it turns things a little bit generic.
Graphically, the game is the bomb. It hits all the aesthetic and enviromental points that made Diablo II the dark gothic RPG it was, and in that sense, Path of Exile looks more Diablo than Diablo III will ever look like. Enemy design is good, although they tend to recicle previous models, and levels are really big and intrincate.
The only gripe I have with the game is the lag....... it's really bad at some points. I didn't take into account this factor into the score, since I'm not sure if the problem is their server or my connection, but you can be certain I'm not alone in this one. The game has a bad tendency to "ultra" lag, making an unexpected pause for a few minutes, after which you find yourself killed by a miriad of enemies that weren't there before. But the most annoying tendency is the fact that the game just disconects every once in a while; log in again and you'll find yourself in the last town you visited, with your current progress in a dungeon ranging from partially to completely lost. In the best case scenario, the map will stay the same (enemies killed, chests looted, map discovered) and you'll just have to walk to where you left off; in the worst case scenario, the map will be randomized and EVERYTHING...... map discovery, enemy position and loot will be respawned like if you'd never set foot on the place, which is complete BS. If it happens to you in a multilevel dungeon prepare to ragequit, you've been warned!!
This last aspect might deduct points for some of you, but in my view this game is a work of love, an art piece made for the sake of art, not gain. It deserves to be celebrated even in it's excentricities and faults, and in that regard it's one of the rarest gems, even if it's not the most polished one.

The long term play is what starts detracting in my view, but keep in mind it's FTP so what do you expect. Before I forget, I will state that this game runs like a top. I suffered a few fatalities due to "lag" issues, but I have had those in just about every server-based game I have ever played. Not a real problem for me anyway. Life of a gamer and all that....

I took one character to level 45 and "finished" the game as it stands now. While I had a blast in the 3 weeks or so I played it, I found that sifting through the literally thousands of pieces of gear that would drop in a night's gaming got to be slightly tedious. Also tedious to me is the prospect of going through the gameworld again, albeit at a harder difficulty. I've seen the 3 act gameworld, found it uninspired if really nicely rendered, and it holds no more charm for me somehow.

The characters on the other hand I found to be a little more imaginative, eclectic if goofy in spots, but altogether decent and interesting.. The mobs were well thought out, nicely rendered for the most part, and even beautiful art in a few cases. In my case, it gets kinda stale after slaying 1,000 identical mobs in 5 minutes, most of whom will drop some utterly useless gear. I had to laugh when I found a piece of armor that actually increased the amount of loot by 11 percent. I distinctly remember thinking to myself
"My God, who in blazes would actually want to look through more of this stuff?"

Maybe I'm looking for something a little more cerebral in a game..... I'll shorten this up a bit by saying that POE is a very well made ARPG with enough fresh ideas to keep you interested for a while. It IS a slasher, AND a grinder make no mistake, if you're looking for a classic story or real rpg elements you'll find hints of them here but not much more. This game is about combat, levelling, and wanting to invest the endless hours into multiple builds of your character. In the area of build customization, I will state that it has the most advanced skill tree that I have ever seen. The amount of work that went into this facet alone must be staggering. This would be better suited to you if you are into hardcore gear swapping, trying out builds and kits, and grinding... I had good fun on the first play through, but can't seem to get interested in another go, regardless of the fact that GGG has innovated again in their of randomization of map orientation so that at least you get a different physical perspective on the 3/4 iso field whenever you replay a map.

Final thoughts: Great innovation in a few areas, lots of fun, EXCELLENT coding, I feel that if GGG can expand the best ideas in this game the sky is the limit. As it stands, this level of quality in a ftp game is almost unheard of. If it were a standalone retail game the first 40 hours of gameplay would get a 70 something from me, because I just don't get into the hack n' slash that much, but seeing as how it's free and I had a really good time for a couple weeks I'm going into the upper 80's.

The lasting impression I get is that GGG has enormous potential and some serious game creation juice to pull this off. I will be listening hard for news of their next venture, if only because my personal taste is not along the lines of staying with POE. They currently have "it". These guys could make a Baldur's gate for the next generation, and coming from me that's saying a lot. There are improvements that could be made, but there is some really good stuff here.

I still sees the ghostly pirates when i closes me eyes...... yaaaaargh....

POE can be difficult, you have to make correct decisions regarding your character build. If youre looking for an optimal character your first play through, you may want to read up on game mechanics and builds. Also, at some point you're probably going to have to do some trading if you want great gear.

Desync is unfortunately an issue. Occasionally the game client and the server don't communicate correctly. This did not effect me at all, for some people it's a legit hindrance.

It's free to play with a cash shop full of cosmetic stuff and frills. You can't pay for more powerful characters, or max level characters, or experience boosts, or any of that garbage. The game is not pay to win.

I loved the skill system, which is pretty similar to the open point system of Final Fantasy X, I loved the fact that there isn't a proper currency but spendable orbs, and I'm loving how the art of the game is realistic and dark in the same vein as the first Diablo and Starcraft of the 90's instead of the childish tone game nowdays took, and as someone who never buys game and always pirate, except if it's from Paradox or some very obscure creative developer, I love their market model.
Maybe I'm so excited because like another reviewer said "You didn't reach endgame yet", maybe the game is good in the end.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Poe is classic "diablo game".Even its lack atmosphere from D1 it still offers a good game experience lets say differently.I have to admit developers for progressive aproach to the game. Well its not like starcraft 1 and 2 - u dont give new units graphics and thats it .. Sure its diablo clone - but with some new brave ideas, new gameplay systems.. lets see pluses and minuses of the game

+ Character customization it was never so complex in any other diablo clone game - skill three is so huge u will **** bricks and is biggest in diablo clone games so far.
+ Skills as gems this system is really revolutionary you can create your own skills - with complex skill tree that`s really kick-ass!
+ Currency system and crafting with orbs
    + it`s free completely
+ Constant updates from game developers side
+ Race modes where u can compete with other players usualy who gets faster experience

    - Desinc problem , well this is one of big issues of the game, you can die easy because of this lag and thats big problem for players who want to play hardcore mode
    - Leveling skills dosent feel rewarding especialy for weapon skills
    - Monsters dosent have a personality usualy u see them as hit points to get rid off no special tactics is needed maybe little on highier difficulties. Also u have to face skelletons just with more hit points and damage even in act 3, well thats quite bad cause u want that feeling what will be there when beat boss at end of act 2 and u see skeletons hmm...
    - 3 dificulty settings - well i know its diablo clone but cmon this is not the best way to increase game length i hoped for something better with such progressive atitude

As somebody who doesn't have much interest in aRPGs. I can say with 100% certainty that this is one of the best. And since Path of Exile is free to play I feel like I should start off by saying there is no "pay to win" in this game. The only things you can buy related to your account would be: 1. More character slots.(and you start of with 24 of them). And 2. Stash tabs to store more lootAs somebody who doesn't have much interest in aRPGs. I paid to get into the closed beta long ago and I am pleased to say that I haven't felt even a teensy bit of regret, the massive passives tree adds so much to the game, as well as the skill system. It is a blast to try out different combinations of skill gems and support gems.

Trading in this game however, still leaves a lot to be desired, as most of the trade channels move so fast it makes it difficult to keep track of/find things that may be worth while. And it doesn't help when somebody decides it is a good idea to show off a whole inventory worth the items.

As mentioned in my first segment, there is no pay to win, there is however, some really high prices for somethings. Stash tabs are pretty useful but are very pricey too, at the current prices, a single tab will cost about $3, or you could buy 6 of them for $15. Most of the legitimately interesting cosmetics are also very pricey. But I suppose this is better than, lets say, making one pay for accessing content, or making certain characters paid only.

My only other major complaint is desync. and that without knowing you can suddenly end up in a horde of mobs a whole screen over, which means if you want to make a build that trades health/defence, for MAXIMUM POWER, you will need to play very carefully, or just not play the hardcore leagues entirely.

Well I think that about sums up the major complaints, which when you compare it to the rest of the game, dwarf in comparison to how much fun you can have in this game for the low, low cost of absolutely nothing.

Seriously, if you liked Diablo 2, go and download Path of Exile right now.

It is also worthy of mentioning the game's original skill tree, which lets you decide however you want to play your character. It's a great game that i worth mentioning and free stuff is always a joy.

Made an account just to post a hopefully honest review for people. Tl;dr Fun endgame, many specs to choose from, awful retro graphics, dsyncing deaths like no other, constant bug fixes from devs and patches, overall great game 8/10.

Path of Exile offers players a very diverse skill system in which I personally have not seen from another game. There are hundreds of ways to make a skill unique. For example, you can get a cleave gem and attach fire damage, frost damage, bigger cleave area and things like that. You can literally play thousands of builds in this game. However, there are only a few handful of really good builds and the rest will fall short when it matters.

The graphics in this game are fairly bland, don't expect to see anything close to Diablo 3. The good thing about Path of Exile is that is sets you in a world riddled with dark and twisted creatures. You could say in actual visuals it is close to Diablo 2 (only 3D).

The music in Path of Exile is overall a bit lackluster, don't expect anything fancy other then a repeating background tune that differ in each zone.

Here is where Path of Exile really tops itself in my eyes as the best ARPG currently available. The gameplay is absolutely fantastic. Each monster pack you encounter can be easier or much more difficult than the last and the boss fights in the game are overall very challenging. Don't expect to play this game and mindlessly advance level to level, you will need to play fairly well verse some of the monsters/bosses.

Path of Exile offers a very easy way to play with other players. Unlike Diablo 3, Torchlight and others out there, all you need to do is create a group and give it a message "Looking for more players for X" and the group fills very fast. There is also many global chat rooms inside the game such as trade chat, general chat and other things like what you would expect from more of an mmo.

The combat in this game has some goods and bads. The combat mechanics in this game are very well made. In games such as Diablo 3, hits register milliseconds before the actual attack lands which leaves little room to outplay bad encounters. Whereas Path of Exile has a combat system so the hit registers as the monster actually hits you, this allows you to dodge attacks freely and in a way makes this game much smoother than most in this genre. The bad thing about the combat is you dsync VERY often. This will have you dying left and right and pulling your hair out wondering how you somehow teleported 15 feet back into the pack of monsters you just swiftly ran out of. This is probably the most frustrating part about this game and overall if you plan to play hardcore this can make it or break it for you.

Overall, if you want to casually play a game and not dump tons of hours (roughly 20+) to start really enjoying what this game has to offer, then this probably is not the game for you as you will be left short in your characters builds or if you have to remake a character due to a bad build. As for the hardcore players, I personally think Path of Exile is the best ARPG game out for our kind.

There is no such thing as a free lunch, but there is such a thing as a free ARPG, unless it costs you money to download the client, in which case don't bother, because there are very frequent patches too.

Path of Exile is worth every cent you'll spend on it.

This is a guideline for how to properly review games. Many reviewers like to get a “feel” for a game, and arbitrarily give a game a score that they believe it deserves. This results in wildly different scores between different reviewers, and vastly different scores between similar games. This guideline addresses these problems and scores games fairly and consistently. This guideline also gives scores that are usually similar to the metacritic score.

The review score is based out of 10 points. There are no “half” or 0.5 increments. It is impossible to have a score above 10 or below 0. The review score will change as the game gets new dlc, drops in price, or if more secrets are found through the game increasing its appeal.

The scoring is split into 6 sections. The first five sections can add a possible 2 points to the final score. The first 5 sections are Single Player/Multi Player, Gameplay, Visuals/Story, Accessibility/Longevity, and Pricing.

Notice that 3 of these sections have two parts. These particular sections will be scored based on the stronger part of the game of the two. For example, if a game has a lousy single player campaign, but an excellent multiplayer component, that section will be based solely on the multiplayer as if the single player did not exist. This allows games to be based on their own merits, as many unnecessary features are shoehorned into video games by publishers to reach a “feature quota”. Games that excel in both areas of a section don’t receive should be noted in the written review, but cannot increase the score past 2 in that section. However, it can be taken into account in the final section

The final section can add 1, add 0, or subtract 1 to the final score. This final section is the “wildcard” section. This section is for how the reviewer “feels” about the game, but limits this only to this section, rather than the entire 10 point review. This section can include any positive or negative point that was not covered in the previous 5 sections.

On the bright side, the developers are amazing and responsive, and I'm sure there will be fixes that address the flaws as the game matures. On to the bad stuff.

Desync. Left-clicking to attack; attacking through doorways; walking through doorways; walking in confined spaces; melee attacks; leap slam. From what I understand, these things and more can all affect how the server predicts your character's movement. As a result, the server predicts that you will be standing ion one spot, while your local client displays you as standing somewhere else. This can and will lead to death, unless you're very careful. This hasn't been noticeably worked on since I started playing during the closed beta, and is extremely infuriating, but is not extremely worse than other online aRPGs with "rubberbanding" (like you-know-who). This major point takes off 1.5 from my score.

Balance: Some classes, skills, and skill combinations are much more powerful and useful than others. This is only a small issue, as the developers frequently add new skills and rebalance the skills. In the past year, they've added a new class, many new skills, rebalanced much of the ranger tree, rebalanced physical bow attacks, rebalanced melee, rebalanced life nodes, and much more. Balance is a moving target, but I think GGG is doing an excellent job of addressing it. Until the game is completely balanced, I'll just take .5 off for this.

I really have no complaints about the game besides these 2 things. Everything else is practically perfect.

Extremely satisfying visuals (in contrast to other games that "hold up" on their best spell effects to use them on the max lvl skills) combined with harrowing scenery, hindered vision and relatively high skill cap, make for a game that can make you starve in your living room.

But with more complex skill tree, more complex items system... more complex everything! And with the same dark climate. Even darker than Diablo's one. This game is a pretty good hack and slash game and gives players a good single player and multiplayer experience. However, I do not think this game is to be considered the best hack and slash game. The customization is deep, and the dark, moody setting gives it a "Diablo" feel to it. Sadly desync is "part of the game", you have to take desync in consideration while slashing mob hordes because if you don't, you probably end up dead.
Graphic is not an eye candy like most commercial games but I won't say there's any impact on enjoyment.
About game's music I have to say only a few background music themes are good, most of them are not really enjoyable (unlike Diablo II for example). I wrote myself an utility that replaces most game's musics with Diablo I / Diablo II ones and it was awesome, almost another game.

Finally, the game is free to play and not pay to win, there are no boost microtransactions, only visual effects. Game support is fast and precise.

    2. Cleaver economy based on barter in which there is no such thing as inflation like the "gold base " economy in most games, you trade with currency that are useful to most things in game, so currency preserves it value.
    3. Useful craft: one of the few online games in which crafting is useful! Yes, you will be at maximum level and still using that nice armor you've crafted at very low level (that is what makes currency be worth).
    4. Useful common drops, same as described above: crafting made yellow items almost as useful as legendary even at higher levels.
    5. A fair learning difficulty curve that forces you to be constantly developing your character to progress. Even with high level characters "carrying you", can't beat the game without an idea of your goals.
    6. Not Pay 2 Win. Unlike most "so called F2P" games, this is 100% free and 24 characters per account. With micro transactions you'll be able to buy only aesthetical complements or more space to inventory.
    7. The deeper environment in the straight line with Diablo 2. You will feel fear in one occasion, guaranteed.

    Except for one point:
    8. The only whim I have is that is only online. This game would be awesome offline to play without lag and even better to have mods...

So this game is ALMOST perfect, only the unfair "DRM online MMO system" is why I can't give it a 10, I cannot fully enjoy a game that I don't own, for example, servers of Sacred, Dungeon Siege or Titan Quest was shutdown long ago but I still playing those incredibly ARPGs and with mods! Welcome to Wraeclast, land of darkness, crappy loot and addictive, ARPG gameplay. To some, Path of Exile is merely regarded as the anti-Diablo 3. While it is true that it takes a very different route in the evolutionary path of the ARPG, to call it a better game, or a worse one, or even the "real Diablo 3" all fail to accurately describe it, though that being said the similarities to Diablo 2 are noticable, down to minute details like the scrolling NPC dialogue boxes and the translucent map overlay. In terms of combat difficulty Path of Exile is actually roughly analogous to Diablo 3. Where it greatly defers in its character progression. Where in Diablo 3 you unlock skills and passives in a linear fashion and can swap them around freely, Path of Exile has a unique, wide-open and very daunting system based around active skill gems and web of passive skills. I was actually scared away from the game at first simply because I didn't think I had the smarts for it. Path of Exile defies several common mechanics of Diablolikes. There is no limited item durability, but most uniquely there is no money: items are instead traded for crafting ingredients, with scraps of identify scrolls representing the lowest denomination of value. Each of the game's seven character classes have no actual abilities- these are instead tied to the skill gems, which in the style of Final Fantasy's materia crystals are slotted into color-matched slots on your gear, all of which has at least one of these slots. None of these gems are dependent on class but they are dependent on one of only three core stats: strength, dexterity or intelligence, each color coded and tied to an elemental damage type, fire, ice or lightning. Equipment drops you find will usually be of the lowest quality (anther contrast with Diablo 3, which in its current state makes a point of giving you good, class-flavored equipment drops), but any piece of equipment can be modified to a usable state using crafting items- that being said, you will eventually be required to do this as the ratio of good quality, level-appropriate drops starts out ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and only gets worse as you progress, and it will frustrate you. Potions are not stacked the disposable ton but are equipment unto themselves, slotted into your belt with random stats of their own, and charged by defeating enemies- making Path of Exile the only ARPG I know of to have legendary-quality potion bottles! By far the most interesting feature is the skill tree, which is really more of a skill spider web, with all passive abilities earned in the game tied to nodes on the web. Each of the seven classes begins at a certain point on this web near nodes flavored to them, but each can eventually be built in virtually any way you want, to use any weapons, gear and skill gems in the game. Your character does not gain attribute points automatically on a level up, merely a single skill point, which can be spent on a +10 boost to an attribute or something flashier, like attack speed, life drain. The web is laid out as sort of a highway with exits leading to cul-de-sacs, which often contain powerful capstone passives that add things like 20% faster mana regen, but require an investment of skill points to unlock the nodes leading to them. You will need to strike a balance between raising your stats and obtaining critical passive skills. This is where the hidden challenge of the game comes in, though: while virtually any build works just fine for Normal difficulty, on higher ones the game outright punishes you for any poor build choices, though thankfully respecs are plentiful enough that you have at least some room to experiment. I have played through each of the classes at least once, on Normal difficulty, as the game follows the Diablo 2 style progression where beating the game on one difficulty allows you to progress to then next in a linear fashion. I found myself enjoying each in their own way, but found myself most comfortable using a Duelist (the strength/dexterity hybrid class) built for fast, hard attacks with two-handed swords. For a free game, the depth of customization, quality of music, sound and voice work, the developer's commitment to non-pay-to-win cash shop items and the overall quality of the game in general is remarkable. The game has received a number of large content updates since launch, all free, including end-game random dungeon generation, a number of NPC crafters with reputation missions, and most notably an entire fourth story act bringing the game to a spectacular, blood-soaked conclusion. If you love ARPGs but perhaps crave more stat-crunching, min-maxing, and build challenge then Diablo 3 can provide, Path of Exile may be just what you're looking for. For me, it offered exactly what I loved most about Diablo 3- non-stop, click-mashing action in a dark fantasy universe with plenty of zombies, skeletons, monsters, misshapen horrors and some truly despicable villains I could really, really hate. Take a journey into nightmare, and walk the Path of Exile with me. You won't regret it. Expand

Path of Exile is the only game worthy of the title of spiritual successor to Diablo II. The combat is fast paced (with VERY FEW SKILL COOLDOWNS THANK YOU), the visuals are great, and the game is INCREDIBLY deep... a little too deep. The big issue right now, though, is that the game is getting bloated with too many evergreen mechanics. Prophecies, delve, incursion, heists, etc... The list keeps growing. If you take a break from this game and come back, be prepared to get bombarded with completely unfamiliar mechanics even on a normal campaign playthrough.

Other than that, though, I firmly believe this is the only good modern ARPG out there. Path of Exile is the only one to get it right because they followed in the footsteps of Diablo II.

Excellent alternative to the Diablo series, and I'm glad that after many years it's still going strong. Biggest obstacle for most casual players it's the lack of any usual currency, so you have to trade with different items like a colonialist with some tribe members. The skill tree is also problem, but most people just follow blindly some builds or guides so they don't care.

Would have given 10/10 easily a few months ago. Great depth, tons of content, overall committed developer. However more recently the devs have let long term issues like performance, quality of life, and trading build up. They also has a vision to make a game that's very much a hardcore grind and not casual friendly.

My main issue with the game is that even though you are only just going through the campaign which is consider by most as a tutorial the game constantly throws new systems at you from previous leagues. I found this to be a bit of distraction while trying to focus on finishing the base game first though its not a big inconvenience since you can just move and ignore them. Main issue with that is if you are new player you are already overwhelmed by all base mechanics and throwing mechanics and content from past few years at you while you are still learning is not the best first player experience. Overall I enjoyed my time with POE and will come back for more. Expand

If you are the type to want to grind forever looking for that perfect item, you'll enjoy it, but you'll have to deal with desyncs and loss of xp as a result of lag killing you which drove me off entirely from playing Hardcore which is sad because I loved the challenge. After the 15th time it just got old. Each update added more desyncs and some skills are unusable in builds because it will just get you killed. Walk in a room and try to run away? Oh you are back in the room. Try to edge into a doorway to fight some monsters and didn't even enter the room? You in the middle of the room now even you've never been there. Constantly. Sad, because I could really excuse the overly pointless grinding for the sake of fun, if the game didn't have artificial ways of killing me. This isn't a 8 or 9.. It's a 7. It would have been a 9 in 1999, because that's where this game borrows most of it's uninspired gameplay from. It's 2013 and games need to be more technical this. Especially online ones that aren't stable and still want to encourage players to spend money to support it. If D3 had been successful, this game would have far less praise. Expand

Despite being free, it's better than Diablo 3. There are some interesting concepts here, the barter system, the skill tree and the weapon gem systems. Really though, this is a hack and slash game at its core and it does a good enough job.

I've logged about 200 hours with this game and gotten couple characters to final stages of merciless difficulty, and had mostly a good time.

The game picks up slow at the start, but quickly gets going. You smash foes collect loot, and develop your character.

The character development is unforgiving, forcing you to think what skills to pick, a glass cannon with massive dps might sound cool and it will even work on normal and up to cruel difficulty levels, but beyond that it will be very hard to be advancing with such a build, so if you want to go the distance you have to sacrifice dps in favour of survivability. This is all very good in my opinion and for new players there is no need to be afraid of the massive skill tree, you'll be navigating it in no time.

The journey up to about mid merciless difficulty is a lot of fun, and can be done by most build with self gearing. At about lvl 65+ is where the grind starts to set it and the game becomes very much an elitist affair.

Because there are so many mods on a given piece of equipment, a good combination of these is very rare, and you need good equipment to be doing merciless difficulty without too much frustration. So there really two choices, grind the same map over, and over and over again, in hopes that one of those rares that drop are actually worth anything, or sell your soul and trade for some gear with other players.

I like steady progression with these kinds of games and there is literally an artificial block put in place in Path of Exile. One of my character is doing Piety and Dominus runs because they are the best bosses for low tear end game gear, but those are same bosses on the same maps populated by the same monsters. And after doing this for a week, with xp bar craaaaaawling slowly forward I must say the game got really boring.

XP bar crawls forward a bit faster in maps, which are random areas with high lvl monsters, but even there, there is only so much to see and do. While Grindin Gear Games doesn't charge you to play the game, most other players at high levels will, for allowing you the privilege of joining them on a high lvl map run.

Well to make long story short the game stops being fun at later stages, but definitely worth playing though. Oh and if you are playing for any significant amount of time, remember the game is free, but devs definitely deserve a reward for making a good game, don't be a cheap skate, spend some cash in their "cosmetic stuff only" shop.

The environments are bland without any real depth. The environments are also extremely bleak and depressing. The camera is zoomed in too far compared to D3 or Torchlight, and there is no option to zoom it out further. In my view it is very helpful to implement something into a game, that is unique and complex, because you will have fun for a lot of time and discover more and more effectivity. In addition there are a lot of items to find and to choose. Forget Diablo 2 or even 3. Here are better game mechanics: you can have several active skills, in diablos 2 you took 2-3 and played with them. There is one gameplay mechanic, that kills my motivation for this game, it is the instance duration of 8-15 minutes. When you enter your own instance, get back to town for selling items after this duration and want to come back to your instance, it will not work, the instance is gone and you have to play the instance again -> grind. Big problem is, that you need many identification rolls and for that you need to sell a lot of items, so you need to return to the town and get back to your instance.
There are more good things to write about this game. Nowadays it has 10 acts and finally you can play in various languages. The texts are not so easy to understand, so my english wouldn´t be enough. The localization should have been much earlier, but this is why I play all the games much later than after the release of the base game: they re ready then. You can see it here too, many negative reviews are old and from the beginning.
The quests are bit more variable than in Diablo 2, that is of course fun too.
Graphics and Sound are great. Especially I like to read the text in my language and to hear the voices in original language.
The story sounds interesting, but the presentation is boring and this is the biggest weakness of the game: it lacks some videos or cinematics. In addition there is no manual, that helps you to get into the game world. There is a good wiki in internet, but it is only in english, russian and french. In the wiki there are too many information for the beginning and maybe spoilers.

Random mobs will have enchants like "strong crits" and will simply one-shot you if you don't have the right items/build. It takes research and creativity. It teeters between challenging and unfair. Cons:
    - Graphics and effects can feel a bit dated compared to some other RPGs
    - Don't expect a breathtaking storyline with interesting dialogues and character development. This game is about building a character and hacking through piles of brainless monsters as efficiently as possible.
    - Playing the same character gets boring after a while - once you acquire your end-game gear and level all your skills gems, there is not much left to do but farm maps and try to acquire more wealth.
    - The level of micro-management and skill that is required in the combat is comparatively low (exceptions are a few end-game bosses).
    - The RNG of drops or crafting luck can sometimes feel unfair
    - Desync problems can be very punishing for some people

The pros in my opinion outweigh the cons. Definitely a game you should try if you like old school hack and slash RPGs such as Diablo 2 and its various clones. For me it took 2 years of playing to finally get bored and move on to something else.

The game also allows a ridiculous amount of customization when it comes to character builds to the point where it's viable to use a ranger to create a 2 handed charging swordsman due to their increased dexterity.
Unfortunately this game also has some problems firstly it's really hard to understand and get into the game from the start. the passive tree is a huge mess for newcomers which means most likely the first and second character may become throw aways due to bad point distribution and while there are refund orbs it's generally faster and easier to simply recreate a charecter then purchasing enough to reset an entire tree.
Second the game has no auction house and currency instead it uses different orbs that each have a use in improving equipment as tradable currency this makes it very hard for newbies to effectively trade for what they want without getting scammed or being clueless on the matter as well as making it very difficult for players who don't use fanwebsites to purchase items.

    Pros
    1. Endless character creation ability
    2. Free game to start
    3. Constant biweekly updates, and real fast emergency patches to fix major bugs
    4. Overall good graphics, and improving with each patch.
    5. Massive passive skill tree- It has over 1450 in it. Many are not needed for your particular build, but it's there for you to choose.
    6. Guild system

    Neutral

    1. You eventually need to buy micro-transactions for stash slots, not free in the end-run.
    2. Drop/crafting system have way to much RNG layers. Need to reduce the RNG v.s. toying with the magic find quality, and rarity. Hard, but not impossible to get anywere with the current structure.
    3. Map system is the end-game. Due to RNG again it's hard to progress in this area. Just as likely to run out of maps and be totally stuck. This last point is being addressed currently.

    Con's
    1. Horrible Trade system- Needs massive changes. Right now it's run by 24/7 players who have the time. It can take hours, or even days to find what you want to buy. And finding a buyer who will sell it without trying to rip you off. The sell side is no better. You must learn to use poe.xyz/ poe.explorer, or your never going to figure out anything. Of-site websites dealing with availability/ prices for buy/sell.
1A- In-game spam trading is the pits, worse thing I have ever seen, no way to even filiter it, it's just endless fast scroll. RMT sites start spamming you too for next 20 minutes.

    2. Desync- Major problem in this game with several of the melee builds like cyclone. Lesser of a problem for casters/ranged.

    3. Lag issues- Dropping, I suspect over the next several months this will be a thing of the past.

    4. No real PVP system for those who care, for those who don't..... no negaitive here.

I do believe that if they fix the trade system, get the drop/craft RNG lessened, and fix desync/lag this game currently has the potential to be the WOW of the ARPG market. However it will only be a niche game (50.000 players) if they don't correct these areas over the next few months. Only time will tell now.

Again overall score 75/100 with potential to be 97/100

    GOOD

+ Very complex skill system with endless build possibilities.
+ Fluid combat and good controls.
+ Brings back the Diablo 2 atmosphere and gameplay.
+ Ladder system and fun challenges.
    + Good content updates.
+ Some super nice mini games.
+ Free to play, but not pay to win.
    + Great community.

    BAD

    - Game mechanics are not explained very well.
    - The skill tree is often changed and reset. I don't wanna spend so much time thinking of a new build and re-allocating all the skills after every patch, on all my characters. The skill system is too complex for that. Suggestion: Mark the skills the player had before the reset to make it easier.
    - The UI is still bad after all these years. Quests take up half the screen and can only be disabled for all characters etc. The chat has also never been improved.
    - The endgame mapping Atlas system is too complex and too much effort goes into map and watchstone management.
    - Many unfair boss mechanics. Too many invulnerability phases that are not obvious at all, so you never know when you can do damage and when you can't. Too much instant kill crap even when you build your char kinda tanky.
    - Needs endgame content that is entirely unrelated to maps.

    - "Microtransactions" are way too expensive. 15$ for a skin or stash tab is mental and getting just the essentials that you need to enjoy the game will actually cost you more than a full price game.

    VERY BAD

-- The camera is far too close. Especially when in a party and in boss fights it really hinders the gameplay.
-- Only the host makes progress from mapping mechanics. I can't even begin to get my head around how deeply stupid this is.
-- Way too many effects on screen, especially in parties. It's difficult to see what's actually going on under all the loot (even with filter) and explosions.
-- Bad optimization. FPS drop considerably when there are many effects on screen, even with high end hardware.
-- Lag issues when playing in a party. Anything above 100 ping is pretty much unplayable due to rubberbanding in this game.
-- Trading is an important part of the game and it really needs an ingame auction house or something like that. Trading through websites and manually texting people is extremely tedious.

-- They are clearly creating collectors items with the intention of selling more overpriced stash tabs. The gameplay is suffering from all the collection crap. It's too much.

    = VERDICT =

Path of Exile is a good ARPG. If you like planning crazy builds, theory crafting, and you want a single player game with a trade function that requires a high time investment to progress beyond a certain point, PoE is for you.

If you are a social person who likes to play in parties or you want to enjoy a game even when you don't play that often, PoE is not for you.

Playing in a party is strongly discouraged, both for technical and gameplay reasons - and that's sad, because the community in this game is great and more co-op play would go a long way.

The endgame needs too much planning to be enjoyable for casual play. ARPGs should be games that you can play daily even when you only have half an hour, but that will get you absolutely nowhere in PoE, because you'll spend most of that time finding the right map to play to be able to progress, moving around watchstones etc.

Personally, I'm absolutely torn apart. I really enjoy the character building aspects in PoE and most of the gameplay, but I don't like how much the game is focussed on playing alone. 8/10 despite all this criticism should tell you how good the rest of game is though and if it got only some of the other stuff right, it would be out of reach for any other game in the genre.

It is similar to Diablo 3, Torchlight 2 and Titan Quest in general gameplay. All your standard things such as levelling up, loot, random levels and monster slaying are here. Where it differs from the aforementioned games is the skill and level-up system, which is an interesting change. As you level up, you gain passive skill points to spend on things such as damage, armour, critical chance etc.

You gain your active skills from a variety of different gems, which can be freely plopped into items you find - and taken out without a fuss. This allows you to quickly swap skills in and out - completely changing your play-style in a matter of seconds. These gems also level-up with you and become more powerful. You can create powerful combos by linking support gems with active skills to augment your favourites.

This balance between "permanent" passive skills and changeable active skills is actually really good and works well together. You can still build a character to exactly what you want - and the passive skill "tree" is absolutely huge.

Different classes start the game at different points in the skill tree, meaning they can gain access to abilities that suit them best earlier than other classes, but it also means, with a bit of work, you can turn pretty much any class in the game to do something different. It's unique and very well rounded.

As a free-to-play game, it's a must try for anyone that likes the format. It's a great game, made even better by being free to play. At no point does it feel like you *have* to pay to get the most out of it, like some other FTP games I have tried in the past.

Go on, give it a whirl, it's free!

PoE looks nice but is overcrowded with visual effects to my taste. Playing some classes is just like looking at constant fireworks, and it's quite difficult to actually realize what is happening on the screen. Also I'm not that big fan of the crafting system. Is it really necessary to have hundreds of different ingredients? I think not. The character development is also very complicated. Of course it's a great to have lots of options, but you practically have to google your build to not go horribly wrong (well, same issue exists in most hack&slash shallow RPGs, but still...)

Anyway, worth a play through especially because it's a free game. However I don't feel the same need to grind thousand hours for gear as I did with Diablo II, so something is still missing to make this game actually addictive. Maybe I'm just too old.

    + theory craft potential
    + depth
    + story and world building
+ new content every league (every 4 months or so)
    + decent endgame
+ currency system is innovative and pretty great in theory
+ there's plenty of distinct ways for people to play the game (trader, aura bot, party, solo, SFF, mapper, farmer, bosser, delver, ...)
    - graphics are kinda meh
    - currency system can get frustrating and annoying and kinda feeds back on the paid elements of the game
    - not really F2P even though it's marketed as such (you will more or less need TAB'S etc.)
    - new content gets abandoned in the next league and therefore lacks polish
    - Trading is horrible go play SSF
    - SSF is the way to play but sadly restrics build diversity and requires way more hours then trade leagues
    - ALWAYS ONLINE / wants to be an MMO pretty badly
    - build diversity is rather low and depends on patch, if you wanna clear the game without no lifeing
    - developer went from great indie pal to big corpo with all the pro's and con's
    - pretty annoying developer defender fanbase

There's a great game hidden beneath all the always online / F2P market filth. In an alternate universe this could be the best ARPG of all time, but the way it is now i cant rank it higher then classics such as Titan Quest, Diablo 2 etc.

Unfortunately the game has just evolved faster than I can keep up. I'm a gamer who likes to play many games across many genres. Path of Exile is a game for people who like to play only Path of Exile. When I take extended breaks, I find coming back more and more difficult. The new mechanics, passive tree additions, crafting systems, end game progression, and skill balances are just too much for me to keep up with anymore. The game is too complex for me to casually enjoy, and its getting harder to go back all the time.
The complexity of Path of Exile is one of its greatest strengths, but unfortunately, it has left this casual behind in the dust. I can no longer recommend this game with the caveat that hardcore, dedicated gamers can find a lot to love here if they have the desire to stick with it and really dig deep.

    2. Endgame: crafting, maps, builds, delves, and the weird mini games are incredibly confusing for new players especially if on console.
    3. Too easy to "brick" your character. Propper socketing is a nightmare. Respec too expensive. Console economy too expensive with low active player base & currency/item farmers. Unable to trade for build dependent items at reasonable prices (unlike PC). This makes farming kind of pointless & crafting exponentially more difficult.
    4. Too easy to get one shotted by random mobs and not know why.
    5. Video build guides entirely for PC and not console.
    6. Not new player friendly. Even after 350 hours I kept feeling lost.

I hope POE 2 addresses these issues. Overall, game is far superior to Diablo 4.

Try playing POE on console. Lack of players & gold/loot farmers makes many trades cost prohibitive. Which kinda ruins farming & requires way more ctafting. No group finder. No mods (except loot finder), limited build possibilities due to crap economy & controller. No Battle Royale. It sucks ballz.

I felt that the gameplay was great and now they just had to work on the presentation.
But over those two years, not ONE of the things I just mentioned was fixed (there is also no sound via SPDIF something I've never experienced before and an issue that was reported to them a long time ago). It seems to me they only worked on more and more content. And apparently, that's what people enjoy. Good for them. But not for me. Personally, I don't care about one playthrough taking 100 hours (or whatever I haven't actually finished the game and possibly never will). I'd rather have 20 hours of a game that is all-around polished. And if you happen to feel like that too, try The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing instead. That felt a lot more like a top notch ARPG, despite having its own minor flaws.

The world is gloomy and gritty, which is refreshing to see after all the cartoony that most games seem to push. However, I find the world and its characters entirely impersonal and forgettable. This takes away from the immersion and really exposes the game for what it is an endless grind.

Lack of passive skill respecs is a major drawback for this game. I imagine this is blasphemy to those that enjoy POE, but "fun through restriction and repetition" is a concept that i never found enjoyable. Tried to level a Summoner Witch but hit a brick wall? Tough luck, go reroll.

This could be a fun game if you have 100s of hours to invest in it, but in this day an age with so many options out there it would have to be truly exceptional. Which I don't think this game is.

For people who can't get enough of that, that's fine, but some variety wouldn't go amiss. Act 3 has a few areas of contrast, but you're soon back into the gloom, it just gets kind of repetitive.

The passive tree is neat, but it does more to offer players ways to screw up their character than ways to customize. The keystones are neat, and allow real ways to modify your character in meaningful ways, but the path to get there is very boring with lots of +10 stat nodes, and often, if you take the wrong path, you could find yourself getting one shot before you've even completed the second difficulty.

Because regardless of how you build your character, you need a lot of HP to survive, or you'll find your health globe yo-yoing all over the place. Considering there are no easy re-specs, you could find yourself trudging through the aforementioned boring gloomy areas just so you can slightly tweak your character to be able to take a hit or two.

I think it's a good game for something that's free, but if I had to pay for it, I wouldn't recommend it.

What makes it worse is that the game is quite intense and often even a small lag spike or desync can get you killed. Certain bosses have abilities that can 1 shot most characters, these are easily avoidable unless your latency is over 200ms. If your latency is too high you cannot fight certain bosses without a party.
So to sum it up PoE is one of the best games I have played in years plagued by one of the worst ideas games have had in years (online only). A simple addition of offline play or more servers around the world could easily make this a 9 or 10 out of 10 game.

At first glance PoE does seem like an innovative and fresh game, and although it holds true in some areas there are many many problems still in the game. Just to elaborate on a few:

    1) Solo vs. Multiplayer. GGG doesn't care about solo players. Not. At. All. I've been in beta for over 2 years, that means longer than most the more "known" forumites, and when I joined in 2011 people were complaining that the game is a facerole in party and a drag as soloplayer. Well guess what, this hasn't changed at any given time over the last years. The game is still just a facerole as party and a rather frustrating experience as solo player. Show some good design and give monsters new (aoe) skills depending on how many players are in a party. Don't just increase health and damage. This would also battle the problem of multiboxers.

    2) Selffound vs. Trading. This game relies heavily on trading and playing selffound or offering a selffound mode seems unthinkable as GGG's lead designer say things like:

"finding a unique item makes you excited because it has value to other players"

How can someone who likes ARPG say something so utterly wrong. There are a ton of players who just want to play selffound and mostly or with friends and PoE does everything it can to alienate those people.

    3) Magic Find. Mindlessly copied from D2 although it should be known that it is a completly design as an item stat. No innovation whatsoever.

    4) Difficulty. Again no innovation whatsoever. Just a gear-check. Difficulty is only increased by increasing enemy health and damage. How about something more fun and something that actually rewards skill? Give monster different skills that require you to dodge, or make you take care not getting swarmed... oh wait..

5)... I forgot, you can't actually make this game more fast-paced because it will desync all the time if you use something like flicker strike or high movement speed/attack speed.

    6) Skills. Although the trigger gems and support gem thing is very nice there are still missing a ton of actually fun spells. A fire witch has fireball and firestorm. Incredible.
I know that this will get better over time but nevertheless I feel like pointing it out. ;)

    7) Item design is overall really good but the unique items often end up being a disappointment. The design goal here is to make unique items a build enabler, but especially in lower levels this makes finding one of the very rare unique items frustrating. Identifying a unique shield at level 30 and seeing that ALL it offers is the keystone passive "pain attunement" will result in you rolling eyes instead of thinking "wow what a great item".

    8) Item progression is... well. Not that great to be honest. The skill system is something new, but at the end of the day it's just inferior to a skill point based system design like TQ. Also the required links/sockets and the rather rare drops of orbs of fusing will add to making self-found an unenjoyable experience.

Well I could go on and on, but let's just end with this:

Path Of Exile is a decent game and I still see lots of potential, although speaking from 2 years of experience I will say that I doubt that they will now suddenly start to fix, what they ignored for so long.

I had heard soooooo much about this game and how it was everything that D3/Marvel Heroes/Torchlight etc etc wanted and tried to be. It was finally bringing back the true spirit of D2....yea, not really. Its not a terrible game, and its worth giving a shot simply because its free to play and reasonably fun for awhile. I mean it has a huge skill tree offering amazing options and customization, huge amounts of skill gems that add to variety, any class can be anything! Sounds fantastic....

... but it all is smoke and mirrors. Trust me, go ahead and try to customize your character through the skill tree without exact duplication of a cookie cutter build listed on forums....it will be an effort in futility and leave you frustrated restarting characters over and over. Try and make a high dps character by going for the dmg/crit nodes and skipping most of the 8% life nodes, I dare you. 9 out of 10 viable builds will go like this...pick up all life nodes and either blood magic or eldritch battery...done. Now for all the skill gems...well, simply join some random groups and see how many lightning strike/ethereal knives/spectral throw builds you see compared to anything else....there are a few other builds, but not many...again 90% of the skill gems you'll never see used.

Basically you can either role some form of a tank build or you can role anything else and never see past normal difficulty. The combat while not bad is the same thing every other arpg does, spam 1 button, only way mobs get harder is increase hp/damage/resists. The orb currency is good in theory but really is just a pain, as someone said earlier...farm a bunch of low orbs, trade for higher orbs, then trade those higher orbs for a couple high end orbs, rinse repeat till you have enough high end orbs to buy something decent.

I know I sound overly critical but I just felt deceived by this game, if it would have just said upfront that all this variety and customization was bulls**t and 99% of its "options" are only really options if you have no interest in progressing I could have dealt with that. But it feels POE really attempts to be complicated just for the sake of being complicated. Spending the time to learn all the systems just to realize its mostly worthless nonsense is a serious buzzkill.

Hack & slash games are addictive because they follow a simple formula: kill, kill and kill some more. Path of Exile is no different in this regard. During your quest in the perilous continent of Wraeclast you need to slay thousands and thousands of monsters but it never gets boring because there are a plenty of fresh ideas like the very vast skill system and barter-based economy that differentiate it from other similar games. But it's not a perfect game. The story is weak and the difficulty level is too low in the beginning. [Dec 2013]
