A powerful background and some good ideas are not enough to save Paranoia: Happyness is Mandatory from being a missed opportunity.

Paranoia - Happiness is Mandatory is not a bad game per se. The dystopic universe derived from the tabletop role-playing game is on the contrary rather attractive, even if we lose the multiplayer dimension. But the cynical humor isn't enough to fill simplistic and repetitive graphics as well as a gameplay lacking in action and essentially revolving around the many lines of dialogue.Paranoia - Happiness is Mandatory is not a bad game per se. Happiness is mandatory, the Computer is your friend, and this game is mediocre at best.

Paranoia offers a unique premise with a ton of potential and under which many interesting scenarios can unfold. The balance between oppressiveness and humor is executed well, giving a very unique feel to this particular dystopian setting. Unfortunately, the developers are unsuccessful in using these to flesh out the world and narrative or to create characters that feel alive. While there are some cool ideas like termination booths, treason level, and cloning, they are executed a bit too close to the letter of the source material and don’t translate to a fun experience in a CRPG. The game is an interesting experience purely for its world and general atmosphere, but ultimately it fails to come together due to the lack of depth in its mechanics, character development, and world lore.

  1. Paranoia is geared towards this kind of playful arguments and collaborative storytelling more than it is simulation. You can’t easily replicate scenarios like the above in a video game, so to port the setting into a standard computer RPG requires… more. I do wish Paranoia: Happiness Is Mandatory had been a bit more daring in the attempt.

As someone who read the books and ran the tabletop game for my friends, I love it. It does what it set out to do, and it does it well. As for the uninitiated, just remember that this is a silly game--it's not meant to be taken seriously. Full Review »

I tried to get in contact with the support, send screenshots, send saved files... When I asked for a solution they said "to check updates patch to see when the issue is solved".
So, no ticket number, no nothing... Just a "keep checking for updates".
That was 4 months ago... so, the game is unplayable. Have fun with that!
