Ok so I was lucky to have been able to download the PC version of Oxenfree for free on an offer from Epic Games this year.

I finished the game in two days, and I enjoyed this a whole lot. The storyline was good and emotional. I like how they put everything in place and I honestly loved how the characters got flashbacks from happy moments in the past. The background music was good and it created the typical atmosphere which fitted in the game. I really liked the genre of the game, it was spooky but at the same time pretty emotional, and the best part was that everything was unexpected. Not once could I guess what would happen next, and that's what made this game more exciting. The characters were greatly designed as well and the graphics of the game was just amazing. Here and there there were a few glitches or the game froze, but that's usually normal.

For people who are suffering from loss like I have, I would definitely recommend this to you. It actually helps you deal with the pain.

I would rate this game 98/100. There were some things which were hard to figure out and there could've been some guides through the game to make it easier. The map could've also tracked the characters at the exact spot in the location so that you know where you are going and if you are taking the right paths. Other than that, I am satisfied with the gameplay experience! :)

I do not get what the praise is about. The gimmick that people talk and you can walk way? that gets old after 2 mins. Characters are rather shallow and story is just passable. Art style is not that special. I would say it is mediocre, but ultimately I did not like it.

Interactive, story not a video game. Not bad in what's it's doing, yet overall it feels empty, pointess and boring. Graphics, and audio aren't outstanding neither. Not recommended.

Essentially Telltale. As a movie okay, as a game nobody needs this. 1 point for the nice electronic music here and there.
Beside that the dialogues are too fast for non-native speakers, the puzzles are always the same (put out your radio), the gameplay is non-existent and you can't even change key bindings, which is unacceptable for a PC game.
Why didn't they just wrote a book or made a

Why didn't they just wrote a book or made a short movie, this is just awful as a game, since it as "interactive" as telltale.

If you like this game, and games like this, I strongly suggest you get a Commodore 64 because the games are on approximately the same level technically, but the overall quality of Commodore 64 games is better. Seriously, when is this barrage of amateur games that are often not even games going to stop? Are we going backwards now?

You have to use w,a,s,d keys to move around in this walking tour. You can't even use the mouse accept to click on the endless conversation bubbles. Hey, here's a cool idea, let's go back to an MS-DOS interface, wouldn't that be trendy and cool?

Everything about this game makes it clear that the developer's entire focus was on how they could make a "game" with as little effort as possible, and as quickly as possible. The game is very short and yet still spends a lot of time dragging things out to try and convince you that it really is a game, and not a comic strip. It seems like one person could have made this game in a short period of time. If this trend keeps up no one is going to want to make real games anymore. Why bother when you can quickly crank out amateur garbage by the truckload and make just as much money by releasing "indie" games in much bigger quantities.

If you like this game, check out Zork. It's just walking around and text, similar to this this game without the childish graphics, but definitely better entertainment with better writing.

The visual component is 5 out of 10. This decently looks, unfortunately, only in the screenshots, in general, this visual style palls in the first half hour of the game and causes only yawning.
The plot - 3 out of 10. Boring, stupid.
The gameplay is 0 out of 10. Unfortunately it is not there, most of the dialogs and interactions can simply be ignored, there is little to change. Music -

Worse than a walking simulator, it's a WS that makes you listen to 2 wimps speaking through their noses, one of them incapable of shutting his annoying trap for 2 seconds.
But that's not all. We also get the worst flaws of odern "adventure" games all at once:
    - Timed dialogs. Options gone after 1 second. Game decides for player. Game doesn't know it's damn role. - Said dialog options

    - No save menu. No way to fix the dialog debacle.

    - No sound options.
    Rotten gameplay with rotten interface.

Oxenfree is a curious and fairly short game. The wonderful voice acting and characters, the interesting themes and the beautiful backdrops are sometimes let down by poor design choices. Ultimately, for fans of story, of which I am one, it is worth playing. But if you have to get your kicks from involved gameplay, perhaps this is not the one for you.

Oxenfree is well written, immaculately acted, and superbly paced. And the most important thing is a conversation system that brings to life lived-in characters actually talking to each other instead of struggling to emerge from a turn-based dialogue game. Oxenfree is the Robert Altman of videogames.

Intriguing game held back by a faltering script. [Issue#172, p.92]
