Update: Fanboys with buyer's remorse and shills might be able to spam Metacritic (Really, this game is a 10/10 perfect game for all of you? How interesting.) But it's harder to fake Steam reviews. Go check that out instead.

I'll start with some positives: the game looks impressive on the surface and has a solid franchise to stand upon. While the Walking Dead television show is a boring trainwreck built on the suburban couple's over investment and stubbornness to break a bad habit, "Overkill's The Walking Dead" is primarily based on the comics, which still hold a glimmer of hope.

The game is bland, boring and repetitive. The camp system is a bust and not at all interesting. (Think Payday safehouse level of uninteresting) There isn't enough variety, the talent/skill trees all end up the same eventually and they need to balance weapons: all these symptoms add up to one diagnosis- the game is severely over-priced and needs some serious polish. At it's current state, it's a $35~ game, and yes, even with the "season 2" missions planned. But all of that is obvious, I want to touch upon points that other people might not talk about.

The worst part about "Overkill's The Walking Dead" is seeing incredibly obvious mistakes that the developers shouldn't be making at this stage in their career. These are the folks that made Payday- they already have understand the basic framework, but still make blunders like not having proper voice communication settings. In the beta, it was constant open-mic, no choice on the matter. Now, it's tied to your steam settings. . . If this was their first game and they were some two-man indie company, that wouldn't be an issue, but these guys have been at it for years. It would be like if Blizzard just up and decided not to include a screen resolution setting.

Another minor mistake is that there can be multiple copies of characters in a game where that obviously doesn't work. You can have three Grants or Maya Twins- had these been faceless schmucks without deep background lore or personality, it would have been fine, but this isn't that kind of game. Again, these devs made Payday. The kicker? Payday already HAS a system, in which no two players can be the same character. I have to assume that Overkill simply didn't have time to implement the system or some similar excuse.

Experiencing "Overkill's The Walking Dead" is like being a professor and watching your student fail the same course two semesters in a row. (three semesters if you count that God-awful RAID game) You keep hoping that they'll learn from the previous time, but they just don't and there's not much you can do except sigh and shake your head in quiet disappointment. Refund the game if you can and if you can't resist, wait until it's 50% off or better. No one should be shoveling their cash into a furnace, even to keep warm for the winter.

As a side note: They say the game won't have lootboxes, but we've seen that song and dance (and eventual betrayal, followed by hasty backtracking from community backlash) before with Payday. Let's see if they can actually keep that promise this time. One can hope.

Ok technically still has some holes, but I do not understand why these little boys pseudo critics have to ruin a title that deserves. The thing that I like most about OTWD is the fact that it feels to be in those actions that characterize so much the TV series. It is not perfect as a game, but I trust in the developers because it has the basis to be an excellent game.

I actually don't know why the critics are that bad. The game had bugs post-launch, as nearly every Triple-A Title out there. Right now, most bugs are fixed. Hey Community,
I actually don't know why the critics are that bad. The game had bugs post-launch, as nearly every Triple-A Title out there. Right now, most bugs are fixed. I enjoyed the game for 300h with friends in 4 player coop (actually solo it is no fun, but it is a coop game like l4d2 or vermindtide). I really enjoy the mechanics (you have to stay silent, otherwise the hord-o-meter grows up, and if it reaches overkill, the difficulty just increases. I also enjoy the higher difficulties. If you don't plan your approach carefully you can just wipe within seconds. It gives really the feeling of the zombie apocalypse. So you will use melee attacks in the beginning of the mission, before you decide to "go loud" and lure all the zombies to your position.
I think most ppl who are playing this, are expecting a "call of duty"-like gameplay... full attack, all out. And I guess that why I read so often, that the mechanics are not working, that you can’t use your weapons at all, because then the zombies will overrun you…
I think the game has a core community which really enjoys the game. The missions are repetitive, you have to do them multiple times to get the loot you want (Lv 200 Weapon of your choice). But that is nothing else then e.g. Vermintide 2 (which I also really like!).
For me the title deserves a 10/10 when they get rid of the last bugs like: very long loading time (well when you install it to an SSD loading time goes form 2 minutes down to 5 seconds), and also the need to “load” when you go to your camp to get the daily missions. This is annoying.
Hope that review helps you. The game is great.

However... if you dig deep into the game you find a level of complexity that might surprise you. There are a ton of things to do. Not just the 13 available missions, but as you play the game you can meet and help people and recruit them to join your camp. There is a camp management system where you can send people on runs. The survivors you recruit can be leveled up. Some become more valuable members of your group than others.

The co-op aspects to this game are great if you can play with a team of four people who understand their roles. The tank must play like a tank. Same for Scout, etc. I was lucky enough to play through the game with a really good group of guys who were good at what they were doing. We coordinated every single move we made. It created a level of intensity to playing that's not easy to achieve against AI threats.

The story is average to me. This game is more about leveling up your characters, your AI surivors, and your camp. You can also farm for rare weapons and attachments by doing missions and finding loot crates.

The zombies in this game are the best zombies I've ever encountered in any game, period. I'm a DayZ early access guy and I've played basically every major zombie game out there. Some of my personal favorite recent zombie games are World War Z, State of Decay, 7 Days To Die, Left For Dead 2, Breaking Point Mod (Arma 3) and the old H1z1. This game has more impressive zombie behavior than anything I've ever seen. The zombies react to sound and movement. Just like in the TV show... the players can trick and distract the zombies by making sound or moving them in a direction. This is a really overlooked, fun element to this game. The more noise you make... the more zombies that come. I've seen gigantic hoards in this game. Extreme moments. Explosions that took down a massive hoard.

Overall... I completely enjoyed this game. I had moments of frustration during the learning curve, but this is one of the best, most rewarding co-op games that I've ever played with friends. Just excellent!

It's a shame that Season 2 never got to be released because of the disagreement with the IP holder, I still have hope that Starbreeze will make an announcement out of the blue and OTWD will be updated one last time as they've come to a conclusion. This is not L4D, unless you call all zombie games with 4 players L4D-clones. OTWD is not a shoot em up where you go in and slaughter everything. Well, you can, but that is not the objective. Stealth will make every map so much easier except when you defend your camp, then you can shoot as much as you like. It is a coop game, and you need to get help and be helpful to go through the maps.

It has a steep learning curve, and you need to see beyond the first mission. That mission is a tutorial, but Overkill forgot to tell you that when you start playing. That is not what this game is about. Sure, you need to defend your camp now and then, but there are several missions and beautiful maps to go through.

There are bugs and things that needs to be fixed, the human AI they need to work on. But I am sure they will. History shows that they do try and fix their games over time. But I have not seen anything yet that will break the game when I play it.

I have played this with both friends, randoms and solo. Still not that good in solo, but when in coop, this is bloody fun! Need a lot more practice with solo I think, and upgrade my weapons.

Do not buy this game and think that it will be like WWZ, it will not. If you have A LOT of zombies around you that you need to kill, then you should try another approach next time. Something went wrong :). Try this game if you want to improve your camp, weapons and be a sneaky zombie-killer that wants to kill off humans that threaten you and your camp. I believe that Overkill will support this game for several years, so it will not die as someone wrote.

And someone wrote that this was not story based? Then you have not made it through the tutorial... Try again.

Very hard game from the start which is nice for a change. Seems grindy at times doing easier levels over and over to get higher levels just so you can survive a little longer in harder maps. Not recommended for a single player game, you need "smart" friends to work together. No room for a lone wolf player in this game.

It's really fun, exiting and gives you some good scares here and there.

That, together with all new content the devs said will come over the years (with new seasons just like the tv show), makes it a game that I believe will live long and prosper (yeah, a threw a little star trek in here). I'd play this over the braindead L4D games any day.

The graphics are really good and the game play and overall mechanics are good. Melee are really good and almost more fun that using a gun. You get kind of thrown in to the story (and action), but the story develops more longer in the game and I really looking forward to see where it goes. Missions are varied in style and execution and most of all i love the over all design and look of the game, enviroments etc.

The more noise you make the more zombies you'll attract. Playing with friends, this is a very fun and rewarding game (I Always play on the hardest difficulty I might add).

Now, there are some issues, I'll admit that.
The biggest issue atm is that updating the game takes a loooong time, and when you start a new mission, you'll have to wait, sometimes Three-five minutes Before the match starts. Aside from those technical things, me or my friends have never had a crash or bad in-game performance, game runs very smooth.

One thing that I really hate about this game are the defend missions where you're supposed to defend your base from stupid NPCs with 1000x in Health, so they take like Three or four headshots! to kill. That's just bad game design. Unfortunately, there are Three missions of this type that you'll be forced to play in order to progress/unlock other missions, but just play them once and try to forget about them :). There is also one defense mission (the very first one) where you defend against incoming zombies, and that one is actually quite fun (on high difficulty, otherwise it's too easy).

The game is currently lacking an InGame voice chat, but that will be included in the update due this Thursday (29:th nov) so that will be a big help when playing with strangers (typing instructions and strategy in the heat of battle is just crazy).

There are tons of weapon and weapon modifications that you can unlock and there's quite a rich skill-tree. When doing missions, you'll loot the Environment for Resources and at the end of a mission you'll be rewarded Resources that can be used for camp upgrades and weapon modifications.

There's no real tutorial so casual players might be a bit Clueless in the beginning.

One mission usually takes under an hour to finish so it's great to just jump in, play a mission with some friends and then do something else.

This is not a perfect game, but it's fun and rewarding and it'll only get better in the coming months with additional missions, bug-fixes, features and content added by the developers.
