The game really does deliver on a beautiful, cozy environment. I found myself pausing at vistas to take screenshots like I might snap a photo while camping in real life. If only that world offered a bit more engagement and a better overall balance of grind and reward, Outbound could deliver on its promise. The good news is, the game itself runs well on PC, and many of the biggest issues here feel fixable in time. As it stands, however, the game left me feeling more frustrated than immersed, and I wanted a bit more from this one.

Outbound is a cozy, visually striking van-life adventure game that nails atmosphere and customization, but struggles to keep its open world engaging. While building a home on wheels is a standout highlight and the picturesque scenery is consistently beautiful, the core exploration loop quickly becomes repetitive, with a world that often feels too empty to sustain long-term interest. It’s a relaxing ride, but one that doesn’t give you enough of a reason to keep driving.

Still, it remains a contemplative pleasure for lovers of virtual exploration… one you’ll play through from start to finish before tucking it away in the back of your collection, unsure if you’ll ever pull it out again to relive the same journey.

While inventory limits and collectibles can feel a bit restrictive or grindy, they never take away from the overall chill experience. Outbound is slow, cosy and a good reset from the action-packed games I normally play. No big challenges to overcome, but a satisfying gameplay loop, nice visuals and music makes it a good, albeit repetitive experience.

If you are a newcomer to gaming and open-world games, then Outbound is a reasonable first recommendation for you to play. It's simplistic, low-stakes, cosy camping fun with accessible puzzles and foraging elements that are even better experienced as a multiplayer game.

Outbound had the potential to be one of the biggest hits of the year, but a gameplay loop that hinders more than it invites, a purposeless open world, and endlessly repetitive objectives make this so-called cozy camping sim anything but relaxing.

Outbound is a pretty game with an addictive loop but unfortunately a slow-moving van isn't enough to differentiate in a sea of cosy/survival games.

Outbound is exactly what it promises. A good mix of discovery, crafting, and building, and it provides plenty of relaxation.

Outbound is the equivalent of sitting in the countryside during late summer, knocking back a cold drink with ice, and relaxing while watching the sunset. This game may have the guts of the usual survival and crafting games that crop up all the time, but Outbound has done a great job avoiding many pitfalls in the genre.

Although there are lots of ways to upgrade and decorate your van - which, I suppose, is just about the only saving grace of this game - I had absolutely zero interest in doing so. Why should I bother putting the time into making my van look nice when the world is so devoid of character? There are dozens of cozy survival games that nail everything Outbound is trying to do, and go so much further. I do expect another developer to pick up where Outbound has dropped us off though: people want a cozy campervan game, and I’m certain someone else is already cooking one up.

Outbound is a contemplative experience that transforms exploration into a refuge. Amid luminous forests, deliberate construction systems, and a quiet sense of freedom, this indie title turns solitude into a form of comfort, delivering a cozy journey that proves getting lost can sometimes become the best way to find oneself.
