Aug 15, 2025The best RPGs impart lasting emotions on the player over the duration of the playthrough. In between its turn-based battles, light character building, and dark symbolism, OFF imprints guilt, horror, and confusion on the player in ways few games successfully pull off. OFF is an RPG that everyone should experience blindly, especially those who appreciate a haunting journey with blips of the bizarre. This remaster is not just a should-play of 2025, but a must-play of the decade. If you want OFF’s rainbow, you must have the rain.

Aug 15, 2025Honestly, I’m a bit surprised by how well this remastered version of Off holds up; considering how many games have incorporated its ideas, you would think a bit of its novelty might have worn off. Thankfully, it’s so singular, weird, and dense that its charms can’t be entirely copied. More than a decade and a half later, this RPG remains as haunting and enigmatic as ever.

Aug 18, 2025OFF isn’t for everyone, but it’s a must play if you’re not everyone, and fans of Undertale must try this game.
-
Aug 18, 2025Over a decade later, OFF maintains its status as a delightfully bizarre, compelling little narrative that will haunt you far beyond its 5–6 hour runtime. This timeless RPG benefits from the polish and updates in the remaster, but otherwise remains faithfully true to its incredible original incarnation.

Aug 14, 2025OFF’s re-release reaffirms its status as a cult indie RPG, blending surreal storytelling, eerie visuals, and a memorable soundtrack into a uniquely compelling experience, despite combat that still feels underwhelming.

Aug 14, 2025Playing OFF, you can see why it has enjoyed a huge cultural impact over the last 17 years. It’s a timeless piece that pushes what we believe to be standard video game convention, and the added content is a loving epilogue for long-time fans.

Aug 14, 2025OFF remains a strange yet fascinating experience that won’t appeal to everyone. With improved combat, new areas, and a fresh soundtrack, Fangamer delivers the definitive version for both new players and fans of the original.

Aug 14, 2025OFF is a fantastic RPG from beginning to end. The narrative is fantastic and manages to weave a dark tone with brief moments of levity extremely well, thanks to the great worldbuilding and charming characters. Further, the gameplay is paced superbly with a combat loop that never gets old. I do wish some of the puzzles weren't as infrequent and the new content in the remaster was easier to find, but with the other new additions to the remaster, this is the best way to play this incredible cult classic game that paved the way for future indie RPGs.

Aug 27, 2025OFF really tastes like a fine aged wine. Even though plenty of games in the same vein have come out since the original release, OFF still manages to impress with its story and atmosphere even after 17 years. I just wish that, after going through all the trouble of a remake, they had done more to update the action system. But everything else, especially the weight and impact of the underlying metaphors, delivers an experience you won’t easily forget, even years from now. In fact, when it’s over, you might find yourself, like me, just staring blankly at a wall for a while.

Aug 14, 2025If you missed out on Off over a decade ago then this is your chance to experience a weird and wonderful RPG that helped shape the genre.
-
Aug 14, 2025Despite the passage of time, OFF still holds up incredibly well. The newer translation lets the utterly hilarious dialogue shine, the updates to the combat make it far more intuitive to use, but the part that really holds it together, the story, hasn’t changed at all, and honestly didn’t need to. It’s still a well-written, bite-sized experience that deserves the attention of anyone who loves newer RPG maker games or games inspired by that genre. You owe it to yourself to finally get around to beating OFF.

Aug 14, 2025OFF is dated, but in the same charming, lovely way that a big grandfather clock is dated. It's something you have to appreciate; you can enjoy the craftsmanship behind it, and it's something that inspired so many things you love nowadays. The remaster doesn't change that much, but it's just enough of a facelift and refresh that it's super easy to recommend to anyone interested in playing the game for the first time, even with its slightly crusty visuals and somewhat repetitive combat. This game is a definite masterpiece, and one that deserves to be remembered fondly.

Aug 14, 2025OFF deserves a lot of credit for its creative accomplishments. I’m pleased that this remaster gives us the opportunity to pay it its dues while acknowledging the ways it has been artistically surpassed. It’s the type of creative project that lights a torch for others to carry into even more daring places. Still, with its arthouse stylings that resist easy interpretation, OFF retains its own identity enough to make it well worth recommending to this day. Whether you’re more interested in the game out of historical curiosity or to bask in the dread oozing from its presentation, OFF still has a lot to (don’t do it man, don’t do it)… offer.

Sep 24, 2025A surreal and thought-provoking RPG that blends minimalist visuals, clever puzzles, and an enigmatic story full of metaphors and psychological depth, with improved combat balance, interface, and accessibility options that make this remaster the best way to experience its cult classic charm, despite its short duration and inconsistent Spanish translation.

Aug 14, 2025Off isn’t just a classic. It’s a formative work from a time in which indie game development was taking on a new form, one that has continued to evolve and ripple and shape what the space is like today. Off is a small, strange, and gnarly RPG that may be simple in functionality, but remains special in the story it tells and how it tells it. This new release from Fangamer is a rare opportunity to not only revisit a core moment in history, but for many to experience it for the first time. I have some hang-ups about compromises that had to be made, but the methodology on display in drawing attention to and deliberately not replacing the original is a more than fair answer. If you like RPGs, you owe it to yourself to sit down with Off. The Batter needs your help. You monster.

Aug 14, 2025A wonderfully surreal RPG, with some interesting thematic depth to match.

Aug 14, 2025OFF to me is like dumping a box of puzzle pieces on the table. You comb through them to try and piece the puzzle together, but you notice over time that it seems like some pieces were never meant to fully click into one another. You make it far in the puzzle, and take a step back. You can’t fully piece the puzzle together, but the process of trying is rewarding. I have seen and done everything in this game, and I still feel like I don’t fully understand it. The lack of closure and lingering thoughts that I have are so much more poignant than any explicit explanation.

Aug 14, 2025OFF is an unnerving dream that steeps one foot into a fever-soaked nightmare. This surrealist approach makes it a truly trendsetting experience with how the characters, story, and visual presentation meld into a highly artistic personal journey that is not like anything else. Combat is always serviceable and the new balanced approach to buffs and debuffs allows extra time for deciphering puzzle clues, making them less frustrating to deal with. The nuanced layers added from the original soundtrack are definitely missed, but the muted melancholy the new soundtrack provides is still a trip to experience. If surrealism mixed with an uncanny sense of wrongness sounds enticing, then OFF will not disappoint.
-
Aug 14, 2025OFF is a cult classic RPG thanks to its surreal world, strange cast of characters, and bizarre enemies. Inspiring Undertale and many other indie genre icons, OFF manages to still feel like a titan, and incredibly digestible thanks to its tight design and bite-size zones. Revised combat is a huge plus, making every scrap pack plenty of impact in this definitive release.

Aug 14, 2025I admit I wasn’t sure what to make of OFF at first. It’s a perplexing and weird little game full of charming characters and peppered with quirky humor. Ultimately, though, I feel this is still a must-play RPG. It’s not only memorable, but it features some robust new content I won’t spoil, but which is worth experiencing for yourself. So if you don’t mind putting up with brain-crushing puzzles and occasionally unoptimized combat, you’ll find a lot to enjoy here.
-
Aug 18, 2025Overall, OFF is definitely worth the purchase just for the experience you have whilst playing it. It’s wholly unique and has you contemplating your actions and its world throughout and way after the credits roll. Whilst it may just have a basic battle system and puzzles, OFF is a masterclass in feeling and atmosphere, and this new remaster makes it even more accessible to a modern audience.
-
Aug 15, 2025OFF is an interesting RPG that exemplifies the unique, creative side of many experiences conceived over the years on RPG Maker. Its style isn’t something that will please everyone, and it feels like the gameplay is relatively uninspired even with the facelift. Nonetheless, it’s still the kind of experience worth checking out, especially for those looking for a thought-provoking, weird new RPG.

Aug 15, 2025OFF is an important relic of the old RPG Maker scene, a pioneer in the realm of independent, small-scale RPGs that innovated in its own right. To have an accessible, modernized version that is a nearly 1-to-1 rerelease, without having to dig up old download links for a fan-translated version, is a win in itself. As a faithful remaster of a 2008 RPG Maker game, however, it also shows its age rather clearly, with a shallow turn-based combat system and barebones structure – such is the thing with aging. But even within those limitations, some things do age gracefully; the eerie atmosphere, off-kilter art style, cartoonish humor that feeds into a uniquely disturbing style of horror, and the breaking of convention that still sends chills down my spine. OFF walked so others could run – so, you don't have to love OFF, but you damn well better respect it.
