A satisfying blend of beat-em-up, ARPG and Dark Souls secrets and exploration. Scratches the itch if you've been lost after the final piece of Dark Souls 3 DLC was released. Team Ninja's DNA is all over this, as the weapons and combos are very Ninja-Gaiden

Was skeptical that this was gonna be another bad dark souls clone but it is so much more than that. It's much more addictive than dark souls (2 & 3) and the combat is better imo, but there's too many filler quests and not enough enemy variety. It's a crappy port though and crashes sometimes and that sucks when you're in the middle of a boss fight. 8/10

Nioh is a fluid and exciting ARPG. it has a good atmosphere and sense of exploration, and overall your charcater feels less fragile than in similar games. There is a high skill cap that is to some degree gear and level independent - so a skilled player can do well in bad gear - but gear does play a bigger factor in your character's performance thanin similar games such as Dark Souls and Bloodborne.

The controls are tight and responsive, and the combat is in true 3D space - where your attack strikes any enemy in your weapon's path - unlike the Batman 'Arkham' series; Shadow of Mordor; and (pre-Origins) Assassins creed, which are more of a '2D fighting engine in 3D' with their auto-facing/turning/locking-on attacks directed at one enemy at a time.

Nioh features the character death mechanic where you drop your 'experience points' on the floor where you die - and have one life to reclaim them before the 'experience points' disappear. This engaging as it emotionally involves the player in the game with minor triumphs and failures. The respawn points are just close enough together so that you don't kick yourself over the futility of a 'retrieval' when you die - unless you missed one of them. Note that (in the tradition of such games), these respawn points restore your health and healing potions, but also cause all but certain enemies to reappear.

The loot generation is dynamic except for mission rewards, but not at the Diablo and Borderlands level of diversity. in addition to items with random stats, there are armor sets with bonuses for collecting them; and a crafting, enhancement, and modification system. The loot system is unlike in Dark souls or Bloodborne where key loot is placed in locations by design, or needs to be farmed from enemies that 'use' the item you want; and each item is designed (rather than randomly generated). This means you don't quite have the same feeling of 'I will go on a near suicidal dash to get a specific weapon or armor from a tricky location, or tricky foe' that makes playing Dark Souls that more interesting. Nioh does offer some set rewards for its missions; and i assume that may factor into people stretching themselves to get a reward they want; but as a mechanic that feels less organic and engaging than the way Dark souls pushes you to take risks to get better gear.

You use an over-world map to select destinations for missions; which reuse locations but change enemy types, map layout, and enemy locations - this reuse is similar to Tenchu, but with more enemy-set variety. The use of an over-world map feels less 'clever' and novel than the way that Souls games link their locations together, but in the context of adventuring in a wide range of places across Japan, linking the locations makes no sense.

I have not tried the co-op yet, but the offline PVP aspect is interesting. As you explore you come across the 'remains' of other players, you can resurrect them as a hostile 'revenant' and if you kill them you can loot a couple of random pieces of the gear they were equipped with.

Leveling is similar to a souls game, where you collect ever increasing amounts of experience points to upgrade primary attributes (such as health, strength etc..), and upgrading those causes numerous secondary attributes to raise (such as HPs, resistances, damage with certain weapon types). Nioh also features skill trees where skill unlocks may either grant a new 'move' across multiple weapons, or only for the specific weapon type whose tree it appears within. There is a secondary character enhancement scheme similar to Borderlands, where you accumulate 'points' which can be spent on minor cumulative performance enhancements (e.g. 1% more damage to monsters, 0.5% more experience per kill). I don't know if these secondary enhancements apply to subsequent play-throughs with other characters or New Game+ (like Borderlands 2 does).

Performance on my system is acceptable - running at a steady 60 FPS (capped) at 1080 resolution (an overclocked Xeon X5670 on a 7 year old MB, with a GTX 1070). There are a variety of graphics options, but not quite the level of customization you expect in a native PC Game, but it was still fine for me as i put everything to max, but may be bothersome with people trying to tweak settings at a higher res or weaker card to get a solid 60FPS.

i cant judge how it would run on a lower end graphics card, and I haven't put in the effort to get it to run at my monitor's native Ultrawide resolution yet (2560 * 1080). I use a wired XBOX controller, and it works perfectly fine, with seamless usage and all onscreen displays showing the correct XBOX controller buttons.

I would recommend Nioh to people that I would not recommend a Souls game to, as it is fun and rewarding, and falls within my perception of an average player's tolerance for frustration, compared to Dark Souls and Bloodborne - which I believe are a bit too punishing for many gamers.

If you're lucky enough to not have been plagued with port issues, then you'll find Nioh: Complete Edition to be a wonderfully difficult action game. Though it brings along a high level of difficulty that seems to be en vogue for recent action games, its emphasis on faster action makes it a perfect complement for the competition. Similarly, the loot drops are a great addition, and the oddball story makes the game feel more distinct. It would've been nice to see more PC-specific optimization, but Nioh is worth checking out for fans of difficult action games.
