News Tower, from developer Sparrow Night and publisher Twin Sails Interactive, is a marvelous newspaper sim that goes above and beyond the typical simulator formula.

News Tower is not such a throwback, then, that it doesn’t still feel surprisingly meaningful and—in my case, at least—stressful and even upsetting in how accurate its reflection of news tycoonery can be. I can only hope that the modern newsperson finds some way to get the truth into people’s hands without having to make all of these compromises. But just like my protagonist in News Tower, I don’t know of any way that such a thing could be done.

News Tower is a rare kind of tycoon game, one that puts a lot of care and effort into simulating a very interesting and niche business. While the early game can feel slow and the loop might be repetitive for some, it’s otherwise a fun, detail-oriented simulation game with a decent amount of diversity in its progression systems and overall content, enough to keep you printing papers for hours.

News Tower offers a refined management experience, capable of speaking both to nostalgics of the genre and to those looking for a more narrative and modern tycoon.

News Tower is an innovative management video game that uses the journalism theme well. The 1930s setting is a great choice, as is the fact that many of the bigger stories players will report are based on real-world events. The editor role, focused on deciding which stories to chase based on what can attract the most readers and create a solid newspaper profile, means gamers constantly make choices and quickly see their results. The building and employee management systems don’t have much depth but serve the concept. News Tower won’t teach players about journalism, but it delivers fun and tense weeks of management and printing.

News Tower is a stellar debut and a triumphant return to form for the vertical tycoon genre. Its rich 1930s art deco aesthetic, propelled by wonderful Jazz-Swing scores, underpins a deep, addictive gameplay loop. From optimizing the production line to navigating political factions, this is a meticulously crafted management sim that offers many hours of pure oldschool fun. An excellent example of how Early Access should be done.

News Tower is an addictive management tycoon capturing the tension of 1930s journalism with deep newspaper operations and exclusive hunting, all within a fantastic Art Deco setting and catchy soundtrack. Although random faction requests and an interface needing late-game improvements slightly detract, its solid foundation and engrossing loop make it a highly recommended and immersive experience.

A lot of management titles can have a sort of Excellian abstractness to them — a whiff of spreadsheet seeping out around their ostensible settings. Not so with News Tower. No, it evokes the golden age of paper news across its entire mechanical suite, bolstered further by an absolutely wonderful, period-appropriate live jazz soundtrack from Dutch ensemble New Cool Collective. To quote legendary schlock-peddler, Xanadu denizen, and all around freak William Randolph Hearst — it’s immersive as hell. And from me? It’s an enthusiastic recommend.

News Tower is a satisfying business management simulation that involves optimizing offices and reporting procedures to ensure success. It feels like there’s are opportunities to keep investing and growing. It can even be so satisfying that it stays compelling for hours. There are some minor issues and sometimes it might feel a bit too easy or routine when you get used to things, but I still very much recommend it.

News Tower is an original addition to the management genre, full of atmosphere and surprisingly addictive. Dutch developer Sparrow Night has made a clever debut with this game. Be prepared for some red numbers in the beginning, because the entry threshold is quite high. Apparently, it's not as easy as we thought to create a high-quality, profitable newspaper. Respect for our bosses.

News Tower is a return to form. It feels made for fans of a genre that’s become lost in the Steam Early Access muck. It also feels like a great entry point for people looking to do more than stock virtual shelves.

News Tower reaches the heady stressful heights of the Tycoon genre, challenging you to keep a newspaper in print and filled with stories every week, to manage a tower of reporters, cleaners, and typesetters, and to satisfy a town of opposing factions, all wrapped up with a lovingly vibrant 1930s golden age string ready to be hawked on a street corner.

News Tower is a game that takes you back to a time when journalism was a bustling career. You will micromanage your newsroom to ensure you’re the best in all of New York, while also covering real-life stories, avoiding bankruptcy, lawsuits, and the mob. The automation system is pretty finicky, and restructuring the office might hinder your progress. Still, with enough practice and learning the kinks, you’re able to build a thriving, well-oiled machine newsroom that feels reminiscent of the good old days.

News Tower is a tycoon game that puts you in the shoes of a communications magnate running a newspaper in New York’s roaring Thirties. The player is offered countless possibilities: you can choose an editorial line that highlights certain topics, or even try to go where the wind blows by aligning yourself with the interests of the city’s political forces, such as the mayor and organized crime. As in any job, routine eventually starts to weigh on you, and the sense of instability becomes palpable. It’s hard to stay afloat without turning to the banks, which sooner or later will come after you to collect their interest. Worth noting is the excellent historical reconstruction based on real news stories from the months, weeks, and years in which the game is set as a result of Sparrow Night’s careful and elegant research.

I don’t love News Tower because it’s professional flattery wrapped up in a management sim. I love it because it pretty faithfully exposes why good journalism is so hard to find these days. Being a craven opportunist will net you the cash but none of the quality. Do the work the right way, and your paper will get choked to death by bigger competitors with less scruples. After many failures, I’m doing a run where I’m expanding as slowly and cost-effectively as I can without taking any favors, no matter what. I can see why Mr. Bezos does what he does, running a newspaper ethically is hard. I’m gonna do it anyway.
