The only thing not working in this roguelite is the gameplay. That aside, there's nothing to dislike. In fact, there's nothing else at all.

Ah yeah, another generic pixel-art indie roguelite. It's just Enter the Gungeon in side-scrolling perspective. Yay.

Game was released with a lot of bugs, no testing, and day 1 DLC.

Furthermore, balancing is just wrong and broken in some places. Even before the dev team went and addressed the giant list of bugs, they were thinking of making more DLC.

This game should be in Early Access for 10 bucks. It's nothing more than a PR stunt, copy pasted Gungeon and Isaac, with more problems than good ideas.

A classic roguelike game does not have any extra features. Only the music is beautiful.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. First off i have this on the Nintendo switch. Cant get a refund cause there terrible policy.
This game has a lot lot lot of issues. Ive played all the rouge likes there is, isaac, gungeon, nuclear throne, so on and so forth. So if your looking for a complete review ive got it.

OK.. so to start off the frame rate on the switch is terrible. i've take 7 hearts of damage because of the framerate chugging and skipping. out of combat its fine. many boss battles its just horrid. But Its ok in isaac cause your practically invincible before its starts chugging. and they half to load about a 1000 bullets on a tiny screen.
Visibility is a major issue. half the time i cant tell if there enemy bullets or there mine. Isaac and gungeon do this very very well. I feel like im in a chaotic mess. where the devs just put random enemies in a room to call it good. Things get so chaotic you dont ask yourself what i could have do differently. you ask yourself "How did i get hit?"

Tbh it feels like a complete rip off of isaac. But with guns and memes.
To how you progress through the floors. Bomb, key, and coins are the exact three from isaac. even the enemies are almost the exact same. You got stationary ones that shoot in all directions. Invisible ones that pop up in front of you. And items that do the exact same things.
Its honestly unbelievable. btw they messed up the key, bomb, coin drop rate. its a copy of gungeon but far far worse. Dont even get me started on the familiars in isaac. But in this game its called EGGS which is another reference to Northern Lion who has 2500 episodes of isaac. We call him Egg father. cause of his elegant shiny dome. All hail the egg. check him out and go play isaac. he'll teach you how to play and how not to play. As well as provide great comedy.

The hit boxes are a mess. Lets say you play Mario and a bullet bill comes towards you. You jump in the small hole and let it pass. But in this game if you go in the small hole it hits you anyway, EVEN if it doesn't touch your character.

The guns are a copy of gungeon with very little variation. you got heat seeking bullets, you got lazer beams that even act the same. Nothing special here.

The bosses are pretty bull and boring. some shoot nearly unavoidable attacks at you. Unless you have flying which completely takes the balance out of the game. so if you dont have flying.. good luck lol. in Isaac and gunegon flying was helpful but not essential to a victory. Actually nothing in Isaac is essential to win. thats what makes experimenting so fun in rouge likes. Is the question of what i can do differently next time or what items will combine with each other.

This game is not only a rip off. But looses all amounts of "rouge like" in its DNA. So what do you get?
You get a unfinished, unbalanced, boring, annoying game. And your $20 down. Please check out the binding of isaac. i have 600 hours in that game and i paid $40 for it. Or gungeon, or tbh any other lol. happy gaming :) And please check out NL on isaac. its worth it trust me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. There’s very little to say here. The same could be said about the content. The gameplay. There are many many items to be picked up and used to your advantage, almost mirroring the binding of Isaac, that’s what’s really going for them. You have to progress to unlock more items which seem like a hassle if you’ve ALREADY BEATEN THE GAME. That’s right, there are only 5 bosses to beat in a run and that’s it. With the amount of items you get and weapons you have, you’ll blow through the game before you even unlock the second page of unlockables. Who would want to spend time trying to get more items for your runs if you’ve already beaten the game. There are difficulties that range from Easy, Medium, Hard and others you unlock latter but if you’re good at rouge likes, this barely helps and all it does is try to decrease items. That’s it. Why would you want to play this? Maybe you should only play this like a mobile game. Hop on for maybe 15 minutes or so and get off of it. Because there’s no more content other than the first hour or so. I highly recommend buying something else. Expand

Definitely best time lost game ever. I found ticket number 4 and open bonus stage but this stage don't passable epic version. Wiki page say restart your run because veewo games dont patch this stage. It is free but not playable games.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. As of December 2021, there is a completely game breaking bug on the epic games store regarding the secret level accessed by ticket 4. the npc that lives on this level cannot be interacted with, which this is the only way to get to the next floor. this forces the player to reset. in a game where runs can be up to an hour long, this bug is inexcusable and needs to be fixed. until this happens, there is no real point in reviewing the game but i will say it plays like an inferior version of enter the gungeon. the gameplay overall is less in depth because it only has one real dimension of play (left and right). also, most of the items are reskins of the same "damage and fire rate up." comparing this to gungeon we can see the complete lack of originality in this game. in gungeon each item has a unique effect on gameplay and no two items are the same. also, there is no encyclopedia in game for checking what items do, the crystal system is an awful implementation of active items (just imagine if you had to use keys in gungeon to activate your active items) and the rng gambling has no place in a skill game like this. the only rng item in gungeon is a D-tier starter item that basically gets ditched immediately. dont buy this game, buy hades, FTL, gungeon, noita, or into the breach. Neon Abyss is a decent project in its genre, which simply lacks original mechanics and content.

What looks like a straightforward side-scrolling shooter with some platforming elements quickly turns out to be a rich (tons of items and upgrades!) and highly addictive roguelite. [10/2020, p.75]

Neon Abyss is a fresh roguelike with tons of contents and items to unlock, just weighed down by certain inconsistencies in its development and mechanics. But in the end a funny retro platformer/shooter.
