This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bringing back the jordan challenge and improving the game for MyLeague fans is a step in the right direction, but this game is still just a glorified roster update for MyCareer players. NBA 2K is an infamous cash cow, you start by paying $70 for the same game every year, play for a little bit, and then realize that for your MyCareer MyPlayer to be any good you have to sink another $50-$100 into VC.
spending this much money on microtransactions is something typically exclusive to free to play pay to win games, but 2k pulls you in for 2-3 hours ( voiding your oppurtunity to refund the game ) and then hits you with the actual out of the storyline gameplay where you need to pay real money to have any fun.
TLDR: **** expensive remaster of the last 4 games.

While there are improvements like bringing the Jordan Challenge back and making it better, there are some minor issues like MyLeague lack of new things, however NBA 2K23 is a very solid game.

What a pile of **** Again. They put their whole budget in graphics while ignoring gameplay. I wish NBA Live would give these **** some competition

Why the PC version gets a last-gen version is beyond me. PC is way stronger performance-wise, but still gets last-gen crap. Thank god my friend bought the game for the PS5 and enabled sharing with me, so I do not have to pay 2K for this trash.

Some minor modifications of gameplay around shooting and diving to the rim. More arcade feeling in a simulation... Eeeeerk.
And bad point for an old gen version for graphic engine and without major improvement "MyNBA Era" available on consoles. PC gamers are not Next Gen gamers. Nice to notice that spit in our face.
Avoid this version, which in this state is just a roster update.

One year later, we have NBA 2K24 coming up less than a month, and this game was not even reviewed by anyone, because we all know that this piece of crap is going to sell well. Graphics are great, AIs are harder, playing defense is rewarding, but damn no PC port is still weird, backwards even.

I only bought this game because servers for 2k20 were shut down and my MyPlayer save is now unplayable and inaccessible. Thank goodness I never spent real money on it. It is however probably hundreds of hours of playtime lost. NBA 2k23 is essentially the same game, truly even graphically there appear to be no advances (granted I'm on PC so "last gen" which is a joke in itself). Just as the 2020 edition this game is a money trap and it feels even worse in this version. Worse than that the gameplay feels less fluid and you will constantly feel your players ankles "stuck in the mud" so to speak. Countless hours needed to max out a MyPlayer build as well as practices are still in the game. If Allen Iverson didn't want to practice for millions of dollars, why would Take2 think we want to? On top of that weekly workouts are back. God forbid your girlfriend/wife/child ask you to put down the controller during your 1min treadmill run or you'll have to wait 7 real life days before you can try again! Or buy a Gatorade boost! The "neighborhood" is also a laggy mess with tons of dead and lifeless space. Overall I can only recommend this game to those who are truly desperate for a basketball game. Otherwise, purchase the older version at a deeply discounted price; it's literally the same game. Expand

The game is very laggy on PC. Crashes pretty often and it's last gen, yes last gen version only for PC. Some kind of joke especially that PC specs are much over than PS5 hardware and yet PC getting last gen version which is sucks. It's a same game I think since 2020.

You have to shell out at least a good $150 to experience the main game mode and it's still a mess. You have to pay real money to boost your stats in a pvp game. 2k is terrible. It's an all around bad game. The developers are truly not good at what they do. Every year they inch farther from incompetence and closer to actual fraud. Most releases are visibly unfinished and missing content/ voice overs etc. Just awful, not fun, terrible gameplay- do NOT buy.

I made the mistake of buying this game on sale. This game is horrible. It's basicaly pay to win with extra steps. The hole game is like a micro transactions based slot machine. You need to buy VC to upgrade your player that starts with the ability of a 12 years old basketball rookie. They make sure you can't earn too much VC quickly with gameplay, if you do you get perma banned. This is toI made the mistake of buying this game on sale. This game is horrible. Every year they release a new nba2k, same as the old year. They make you pay for the whole game for an update.

Can't believe we don't get next gen on PC, I literally only play this game on single player because online is so painfully unrealistic and unfun.

classic 2k as gameplay. Game makers still can't make a good anti cheat, this is really annoying. We try to strengthen a good player or get vc but when cheating comes and ruins your match, all your hard work goes to waste.

The only reason I bought this game was because it was on sale, and it only took one day to realize the reason why it was on sale. The fact that they keep giving you all the exact same game made worse through unnecessary changes for the sole attempt to feign progression. This was the last straw for me, 2K is irredeemable in my eyes, They are an old animal that slowly walking to its death, only being held alive by its dwindling group of fanatics. In summary, This game is yet another step backward for NBA 2K putting it one step closer to its inevitable grave. Expand

Sadly, NBA 2k23 does nothing to improve upon the past entries. The game will lose connection to the 2K servers often, sometimes I will have 3 days straight of no issues connecting, but then one day will not be able to connect for more than 30 minutes at a time. The game also has horrid online play that requires fixes in the main files or due to v-sync issues and refresh rate for certain monitors; however, these are not complete solutions. Everything about this game in regards to online play is also pay-2-win. The amount of effort it takes to create a competitive MyTeam is insane in comparison to spending a few hundred dollars and collecting cards that you normally wouldn't get without putting thousands of hours. How 2K gets away with all this is insane, sadly the market will never change unless the players actually decide enough is enough. Expand

Perhaps it’s time I stopped rewarding 2K every year for simply putting out another game. While I still have fun with the same modes I’ve been playing for twenty years, I don’t need a new version of this game to do so, and neither do you. The core gameplay is still very good, albeit stuck several years in the past, but everything around it is awful. The modes I still enjoy feel like they’re buried further in the menus every year. It feels like the only way to enjoy NBA 2K23 in a nonexploitive way is to avoid all the parts of it that its creators want you to play. I don’t see this strange dynamic ending soon, so players will continue to have to decide if being the only basketball game around is enough reason to pick it up each year.

Regardless of which mode you play, you can expect to an intricately deep and rich simulation experience of NBA basketball for the given era that you’re playing in. Visual Concepts have the passion, the funding, the skills, and the time, year to year, to push their product to new levels of detail and depth. The differences in the raw gameplay aren’t massive this year, but they didn’t need to be. However, the Jordan Challenge and the Eras modes make this an especially standout release in this long-running series. Frankly, I don’t find any fault with VC and 2K are doing other than the push for microtransactions, it just feels slimey; call me old school, I guess. Still, if you’re looking for your NBA videogame fix, you can’t go wrong with NBA 2K23. Lace’em up.
