Lots of fun to be had with this game. It's not perfect as it has some glitches, but is relaxing to play with an interesting storyline. Highly recommend.

Quite cute graphics and characters, a fair amount of things to do at least for a short while. The game revolves around accepting quests from the villagers and crafting to fulfill those requests, which is one of this games biggest shortcomings. The concept is fine, but crafting itself consists mostly of throwing materials at a crafting table and just waiting hours and hours of in-game time. What should be the main attraction of the game simply is not fun after the first couple hours of gameplay.

It would also be nice to see the characters be utilized better. Now only few of them get any proper attention, which is sad considering the vast amount of characters in the game -- not to mention the lack of incentive to actually befriend any of the villagers considering how long it takes to get them to like you.

Lastly I think that the mining "mini game" could be improved. Moving around the mines feels a bit buggy and it is hard at times to properly assess what and how far you are hitting.

Not sure why this gets compared to Stardew Valley. Graphics and 2D-2.5D aside I see little resemblance.

The game is great fun in the beginning. By the middle of the first in-game year I started to realize it was becoming a chore. Every time you want to accomplish anything and set out to do it (build this, deliver that, fetch quests) you spend huge amounts of time gearing up... because time is major asset / constraint in this game and then realize you can't go on because you have to do some other massively time wasting stuff to make the things you need to actually make the things you need to make the things you need, to you know.. progress through the story arc. I'm starting to find nothing more than a time sink here with little reward.

All that said, the game play is generally fun but it quickly turns into a slog-fest, especially finding characters to complete quests.

"Hard time in Grindia" tries to emulate games like Stardew Valley and Minecraft. It suffers from a game design that was clearly supposed to have loot boxes and a shop. It suffers from a game design that was clearly supposed to have loot boxes and a shop. It's all there: The long list of mostly useless items and "gifts" that require you to expand your inventory, you have excruciating waiting times for crafting, you have a convoluted crafting tree where the only obvious goal is to waste all the space that you have so that you have to buy more.

The sad part is that whoever made this either forgot to take out the artificial limits and hurdles when they decided to not include those monetization schemes, or they actually really thought this would be fun. So you should be the type of gamer who loves fetching and delivering and working through long shopping lists, and you should also be a fan of the kind of tiered gameplay that feels like you are starting all over again everytime a new material is introduced. You should also be a fan of bureaucracy, because that it what this game has instead of lore or worldbuilding. Including, I kid you not, entrance fees for the completely featureless, foggy "ruins".

The world of Grindia is cute. Sugary, pastel-colored and smooth like baby's first Nintendo game. The music has been stolen from someone who is working on a torture machine that looks like an elevator, but descends only into madness. At least those two are consistent and well-done, which can't be said about the UI, the control scheme and the voice overlays. It's the kind where I'd prefer the robotic stuttering of older console generations or just beautiful silence - sometimes I wasn't even sure who was speaking, but it really didn't help to get me to like any of the characters.

They are quite one-note anyway, and the fact that they have the facial feature of toddlers just doesn't sit well with me when I'm supposed to woo them. The "monster"-design is even worse. It took me hours until I understood that I was indeed supposed to slaughter the things that I thought are just more of the weird pets that are running around everywhere. I wish I wouldn't have, because that way I was also presented with this game's "combat", which I wouldn't even call "button mashing", because that would imply far more action than what was actually happening.

I can't recommend this even to fans of the genre since you wouldn't be fans if you hadn't played much better games. It makes me a little sad, a lot of work has been put into this, but this is just wasting my time without any memorable experience.

Until you get the factory which should be IMO available either from the start for a lot of money or a lot earlier in the game. with the factory you just select what you want to make and how many and than sit back and watch everything automate for you soooo much easier. but you don't get the damn thing until near the end of the game!

in real life it doesn't take hours to make a wooden board too you even have to wait for wood to be made! and there's no way to speed it up except to ride the dee dee and waste time or go to sleep.

you have to make something in one machine than put it in another and than put THAT in yet another machine just to get one damn material and this takes hours of game time! it gets old and tired REALLY FAST. you'll get bored of constantly going mining while you wait HOURS for your materials to craft there's basically nothing else to do the battles and ruins dungeons are a complete joke and cooking is slow and tiresome! keep reading below you'll find out.

mining is really slow too at least at the beginning you can only lock onto one blip and you won't know what it is later on you get upgrades that fix that as well as a drill that lets you carve through the rock like butter but it uses A LOT of stamina. you can get relics in the ruins that you can piece together to complete an object you can put in your house most of these gives you an attack boost. or you can put them in the museum for prizes later.

almost all furniture you place in your house gives you boost to attack, defense, stamina and health up to a certain amount until you upgrade your house. you'll want to max stamina as quick as possible.

to cook you have to put the ingredients into the quick bar and add them one by one this is slow and tiresome. you won't really need to cook until you the drill which eats up stamina and you need to replenish it with food.

farming has been dumbed down to the max you basically just get a plant box, plant a seed, throw in some fertilizer and wait for it to grow. apparently your plants don't need watering or weeding in this universe.

speaking of quick bar whats annoying is if you have an empty slot the very 1st thing you pick up it will put straight into the quick bar instead of your inventory so your constantly moving stuff out of the QB into your inventory. to build stuff you also have to put them into the QB so there's A LOT of moving items back in and out the WHOLE game...

now lets talk about the battles the battle system is also very bad you basically just button mash and roll and repeat. enemies won't even attack you if you just keep button mashing attacking them. the bosses are as dumb as rocks just hit them a few times roll away and repeat none of them are a real challenge.

most of the character voices are missing as well as a lot of sound effects i'm amazed this is even out of early access!

    TLDR?

    1. crafting is way too slow
    2. the battles are bad
    3. lots of missing sounds
    4. very buggy
    5. cooking sucks

    final thoughts
    ============
if the devs are reading this:

if the factory was available earlier or from the start it would make this game a lot less painful to play. cooking needs to be changed and stop making items go into the quick bar as soon as you pick them up!

Oddly addictive grind, has cute npcs and cute graphics.

Combat (which isn't a focus) is bad, and farming is boring.

Overall, if you like farming/life sims, this one rates a very solid 'decent.'

When I first saw this game on steam, I thought wow this looks like my kind of game.

I like open world games and being able to explore and fight creatures as well.
There feels like so much to do, there is a lot of content.

The only negatives is saving is very limited, it only saves after you go to sleep and going to sleep passes the day to the next at 7am. I want to be able to save when I want such as the middle of the day, but I can't as I don't want to sleep and have my whole day gone.
But I've often had to sleep and save in the middle of a day as I had to close the game as had other things to do.

I was nearing 10pm in game time and my game crashed so I had to start the day all over again.
Over 200 hours and the game has only crashed a couple of times, but that is still too much, as you lose all that play and have to start the day all over again as there is no saving in between which is a major flaw. And I have the recommended specs for the game.

Also have to be careful not to die to some bosses as if you do it's game over and you have to start the day all over again.

The game is mostly good but I feel needs more polish. NPC's should have winter outfits and change their clothes with each season.

I think characters could be deeper and there are things that feel wrong and don't match the character. Such as a character that has a usually sweet personality can sound really mean in a play date. I order something they don't like to eat and the response sounds nasty and bratty, they should be grateful someone is paying for the food.

And if you aren't very good at a game like the balloon shooting game, they ridicule you.

Crafting is a bit grindy, not a huge problem as you can do other things instead of waiting.
Such as ruin digging, fishing, socialising etc.

And you can build multiple forges so you can stockpile ingots and other materials

Even with the problems I like this game a lot and it's good to have a nice lengthy game as I prefer games that I can play for 50 hours plus.

I would rate this game a 7 and not 8 because of very limited save and problems of crashing and overall needs more polish.

I'm really suspicious of the high scores and loving reviews from small sites. It's still missing its sound, still buggy, still crashes a lot, still more grindy than a Korean MMO, still poorly written, still has flat characters with less personality than a British politician, and the company still hasn't paid their employees. I sense shifty dealings, which will only hurt the reputation of these smaller sites. The highest scoring "critic" reviews here are an accurate treatise on which sites you shouldn't trust.

I mean, the highest scoring "critic" review is from Game Grin, who even are they? Whereas Destructoid scored this as 55% (trash, essentially).

Be wary, and trust the sites you know over aggregates that include no-name critics.

    Review Date: 25th of January

These devs have been outright refusing to pay their employees (especially their voice actors), using shadily worded 'sorry not sorry' excuses as damage control. That's the first thing wrong with this game, and it should be enough for anyone with a conscience to not support it.

The second thing is that their marketing team is review bombing other, similar games (Little Dragons Cafe, Harvest Life, and others) to try and reduce the competition. A lot of very similarly worded negative reviews for their competition always ending in 'try My Time at Portia instead.' Yes, try the game made by a shifty developer who pulls this unconscionable nonsense.

The third point against the game is that it's incredibly average, as depicted partly by its more believable big name critic reviews. Yet Steam reviews are unwaveringly positive and similarly worded, how interesting. Considering how buggy the game is, with its content, at this time, STILL failing to work right coupled with constant crashing (as noted by the other negative review here)? I'm even a little suspicious by the most positive "critic" reviews from no-name/mostly unknown sites. Were it not for them, the overall score would be sitting somewhere around 40-50, which is much more accurate. And considering the hot mess the game is in, it's even more odd, don't you think? I'm not suggesting fabrication here, just paid reviews, which does happen with these lesser known sites (kind of like how shady, lesser known science journals will publish anything if paid enough).

Fourth point is that they're still failing to properly patch their mediocre, supremely buggy game. Probably because their employees are fed up of not getting paid.

Fifth point is that the game is still missing almost all of its audio. The majority of sound effects and voices aren't in (due to unpaid employees), yet they still released the game out of early access. It's not a release if your game is almost silent and entirely missing its sound design!

Sixth point is thst the game just isn't fun. It's one slog of a grind after another. It's nice if you want to play World of Warcraft in single-player, but otherwise the soul-sucking repetition and padding in lieu of real content will likely leave you feeling exhausted and cynical. There are better titles out there for all that My Time at Portia does, there's truly nothing it does better than any given alternative.

Seventh point is that it's really soulless and feels designed by committee. With the dev having had 57 (mostly unpaid) employees, the game is hardly by a small developer, let alone an indie dev. This isn't some spunky small studio looking to make their mark, they have more employees than some triple-A studios. Too many chefs have spoiled the broth, resulting in a bland experience rife with truly flat, one-dimensional characters you can't wait to get away from (I really can't get over how bad the writing is).

Basically? This game is a con. One that's conning its buyers with shady marketing tactics, and one that wven conned its creators by stiffing them a paycheck. It seems like those paychecks went to paying off a ridiculous marketing campaign of misinformation. This is not something you should be supporting, and you should be very wary of those who do.

You can't say you weren't warned.

After a while, crafting requirements might prove to be somewhat of a grinding activity for some people and quests and inhabitants at times feel a bit dry. A pleasant and relaxing experience all in all that could be elevated with a little more invested writing.

My Time at Portia successfully gives some original touch on the genre, managing to differ from its peers like Stardew Valley or Harvest Moon. While it has some problems with few design mechanics like crafting and small lack of dungeons to delve into, it puts player into interesting role of a builder, all while having a beautiful and cute looking world to explore.
