Expand

I tried to play it on Computer, the movement with Keyboard and mouse is utterly garbage.
When you press A or D the camera AGRESSIVELLY turns and if you are FORCED to counter act with your mouse, many times it just ignore it and turns even more. It can quickly turn into a spiral camera turning around because the design is just plain trash and there is really no defense for how bad it is.

Since the camera is really the the gate to play the game and without visibility there is not much that can be done, this game deserves a 1.

I gave 1 extra for the graphics. They seemed nice, not mind blowing, and lacking detail, but they fit in the environment ( that is poorly designed to fight in) it is really nice to only* walk around.

There is a mind blowing amount of unstoppable cut scenes that are garbage as well. Like after the tutorial, the character SLOWLY gets out of the water taking all the time of the world and you slowly walk forward and then they make you press E to enter a tunnel as cinematic animation like, where you then press W for like 3 min straights while you crawl through a quiet ugly dumb tunnel.
Just so the devs Ego can present you "Mortal Shell" on the bottom black banner .... as if anything so far was impressive. Maybe for kids under 10 that do not know any better.

The tutorial is also made abnormally slow. Too many waste of times part.

Now that all and all you wasted 80% of your time the first 1h doing utterly nothing but staring and waiting and pressing 1 button at a time, you can start walking around fighting the camera automatic adjustment mainly. You will never get used to it, I uninstalled the game after another 30 min as it was mind blowing stupid how there is no setting to change that.

After all of this, there is some fighting. Fighting is VERY easy and you will just die early on for random things you are just not aware of ( there is no intro to new enemies ) you just going to die and repeat the last 10 min gameplay, Really a design around wasting your time, not giving fun.

The fighting itself is boring, very simple, not crazy or nice action.
Regular Dodge and slash and dodge and spamm slash and your enemy cant do anything or do the Hardened thing any time. I am really not a good player and never play soul like, but this was piss easy and I tried Dark souls 1 and I actually quit this one because it was hard not trash like Mortal shell.

At no point waste your MONEY and even less your time on this game.
Devs need to learn how to design basic before doing this.

Mortal Shell uses the classic Dark Souls-like system. Gameplay is from a third-person perspective. Every enemy is a threat and we often have to face multiple opponents at once. Reflexes are not enough to emerge victorious from these challenges. You need to be careful in the battles. What makes Mortal Shell different from other games is an unusual development system. The character we control has no body, and instead we take control of the dead warriors we encounter. Each body is unique in terms of the abilities and specializations we can use once we have possession of it. As the hero progresses through a particular body, more abilities and upgrades are unlocked, making him even more dangerous in battle. We have both a huge arsenal of weapons and a large number of attack spells. Mortal Shell is designed for single player adventure. There is no multiplayer support. The story is non-linear and gives us the freedom to choose our next objective. Mortal Shell graphics are similar to other Dark Souls-like games. The graphic design is kept in a dark tone, emphasizing the gloomy and scary character of the game world. The visual effects of the various attacks and spells in the fights are quite detailed. It has an average gameplay of 10-13 hours. Expand

A weak game. Among the advantages, I can only highlight interesting game mechanics.
The game design of the locations is low, everything is monotonous. Fortunately, the mobs are different, but the design quality is terrible. The game itself is very easy, regardless of the level of pumping, the game mechanics allow you to do cheating. Also, unfortunately, there are many bugs in the combat system.

It has a great tone and the character and boss designs look fantastic, but I can't honestly recommend this considering that the gameplay does not hold up in the slightest.
Just another Dark Souls clone that does not have enough budget, talent or whatever it may be to pull it off.

The only thing that sometimes reduces the difficulty of the bosses in the game is to dodge all the damage by getting petrified. There are no maps in the game, so you will have to explore and memorize the environment. I recommend a game that everyone who loves souls-like should try.

I'd argue that the mechanics are a little too obtuse and that as a result I didn't commit to any other playstyle rather than my starting one, but the sense of being lost in an aggressive dream-like world is very strong. The combat for me was repetitive and sluggish and the bosses aren't the best I've seen. For me the game shines in it's 3 main 'dungeons', and the genuinely scary 'run-backs' to base camp after killing the bosses. As others have said the long animations and clunkyness are what hold it back, despite it clearly being intended to give the impression of heft - it does but at a cost. Expand

The biomes are great and are designed so that you don't spend too much time in them so they don't get repetitive too quickly.

Everything that isn't a boss isn't as fun to fight though. Mechanics are fun but I try to avoid using the hardening ability to make it feel less choppy.

The lore is interesting but there isn't a lot to it when playing through unless you dig for it. If you want lore, playthrough, and level as Solomon.

Music is good enough and sets the tone of the game.

Escenarios feos, enemigos repetitivos y "mal" ubicados, jefes cero interesantes.

The world feels simply empty and many details feel like bad design. But even so, the game comes off as incomplete, and finished hastily, as there are many wacky animations, bugs and no proper cinematics.
I like the idea of the game, but the execution is poor. After first area, it became boring. Bought the game at a discount for $15 and it was hardly worth it.
For time comparison: Souls game easily take me 20 hours on a casual playthrough, 40+ on first attempt. Even though I tried most things in Mortal Shell, it was finished in 14 hrs. Went back out of curiosity and finished it for a second time in 3. So much for length of the game and learning curve of combat. Cannot recommend buying.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This Game is absolute trash, the weapon wind up takes too long, all of the enemies can land 3-4 hits whereas you will be lucky if you land a quick attack. There is no instruction to the game, Dark Souls 3 by From Software at least had the courtesy to tell you all of the controls before you attempt Iudex Gundyr. I wandered around for two hours before I found a Giant that grants a pointless cutscene, oh! It also gives you the parry ability. (No it not included) now I’m sure you’re thinking oh I have a Parry this game is going to be way easier, you would be wrong. The parry has to charge, except we’re not really quite sure what makes it charge. Oh and you can’t land it perfectly every single time you will fail the Parry it’s programmed into the game. But wait there is more, aside from that it is a literal rip off of Dark Souls, even the menus and the text are the same style and font. A love letter game is a tribute this is basically plagiarism with a different name. Now let’s talk the bosses, have you ever fought a boss that has an extremely unpredictable move set that randomly changes, oh and the break between attacks is .000001 of a second. Yeah me neither.

Several people have made comments saying this game is so easy and they beat it in two hours, well those are the same people it find it funny to tell you there’s treasure at the bottom of the abyss. There trolls and half of them don’t know what they’re talking about, I doubt they even made it through the game.

I give this game 3 out of ten and that’s being generous, because for the most part it looks like they did at least attempt to make a decent game, they failed miserably but they tried. Hopefully their next game is better if they have a next game.

Unfortunately, not this game and not in a good way, from the weird dialogue, nonsensical lore, slow combat, to literally copying the parry & ripostes mechanic, this game tries so hard to be a dark souls game and it just feels weird.

For instance, I can't pause the game to read something, but it literally makes no sense, at least in dark souls, you can't pause the game because co-op (summon) and PvP (invasion and duel) exist and can happen any second. This game just wants to say "Hey, we are challenging, just like Dark souls!"

Edit: Alright, I bump up a score a little bit, because the third-person ranged weapon "Ballistazooka" is super fun

-Abilities upgrades and items felt meaningless - partly because you can play things in different orders there's no level system, just earnable perks and weapon upgrades. That's OK but they felt disappointing, like gain damage for 10 seconds on kill, who cares.

-Weapon special moves - I never felt like using them, too much trouble.

-Parry - like the other things, why bother, parrys usually miss so you might as well dodge and harden.

-Crazy difficult early but easy later - partly from upgrades but mostly from just learning the game. Take the spearmen(halberd or whatever) at the beginning, they seemed impossible, no real pause in their attack to strike them tons of damage on the base shell. The fire boss on the other hand was the easiest enemy in the game.

-Just run through - like I said, early on things are very hard and fights aren't worth the effort. Also in general enemies take so long to fight they aren't worth the time and you end up running past everything which is too easy. Eventually upgrades help with damage and you need to farm some points but still...

-Vague - the lore and objectives are so steeped in mystery they might as well not exist.

Anyway, it's a fun game lasting roughly 10 hours and has a new game plus after that. It's generally hard enough, and the graphics, sound, and so on are pretty good. I recommend it, just keep your expectations modest.
Also you could always experiment with speedrunning or no damage runs to make it harder. They often use the shellless form to make it faster. Ciao gamers.

Take COMBAT for instance - MORTAL SHELL mops the floor with all FromSoft games easily, as it has actually tactical depth, while FromSoft games have ZERO tactical depth: you just study enemy attack patterns which you exploit. Boss fights take about ten minutes because they have ridiculously large health pools, while you go down in 2 - 3 hits. MORTAL SHELL actually has an interesting mechanic with the hardening mechanic which turns you into stone for as long as you press the hardening button - or get hit once. It tanks the entire damage. You can harden in mid-action, which can function as a trap.
Graphically it looks far better than the aforementioned games, it's amazing. The art style is just fantastic.
The biggest plus of MORTAL SHELL is its FAIRNESS. Enemy health pools are nowhere near as ridiculous as in the other Souls games, boss fights don't last as long. Also there are less bosses, which is also a plus: there's 4 main bosses and 4 "mini bosses". Saving points are fairly placed at the beginning of each area, at the end of each area and right next to the boss rooms, this is good design, not forcing the player through a gauntlet of trash mobs to face a 10 minute boss fight. As such it is far less frustrating.
The core game mechanics are pretty similar however: souls are replaced with tar, the game's currency for leveling up and purchasing items. Leveling is different however as classic experience levels are non-existent. There are 4 classes to choose from, but not in a conventional sense, as you play an alien creature that wears the bodies of dead people like armor. You can find 4 of these "shells", from an average Joe with medium health, medium and medium resolve to a high health, low stamina tank. Each shell can be leveled up ten times by unlocking ten unique skills, which costs x amount of tar and x amount of glimpses - a rare drop comparable to DARK SOULS "humanity".
There are "only" four weapons - yes MORTAL SHELL is on a smaller scale - but these weapons feel fantastic, are well animated and can be upgraded five times with additional attacks.
I liked the areas which are very distinct with greatly designed enemies. MORTAL SHELL does require a bit of work to get used to it: the swamp area took me several hours to not get lost in, getting used to the harden mechanic and dodging, but if you put that time in, it is well worth the 15 - 20 hours of time it takes for a playthrough. Yes, it's not a 50 - 100 hour game, but it also only costs half of one of those.
Finally the atmosphere is superb, especially when you defeat one of the main bosses and are in for a surprise. It's amazing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I just finished this game, and I found this to be quite an enjoyable game overall. Is it a Souls clone? Yes. Does it hide the fact that it is? No. This game is different from souls games because you're unable to use a shield or "block" in a traditional fashion. This game has a unique mechanic known as harden, where you become stone. This is how you'll end up creating openings and resisting damage. It's a fairly refreshing take to just holding up a shield constantly and has a pretty balanced cooldown. Your other method of attack will be a parry. You get an item early on that allows you to parry and then follow up with a health leech, which is a great way to get back health however it requires a bar of resolve to use.

There's not a whole hell of a lot story wise, and I'm only able to tell a very brief explanation of the story... But in short your game will be going to three different temples, clearing them, and then a boss at the end to pick up an item. You then have to fight your way out of the temple in a fog state. After you've done the three temples, the final boss is revealed and after that you've completed your game. It's a relatively short game, but I did enjoy it once I finally forced myself to sit and actually try to learn the game. After that, I didn't put it down until I finished it. I'd say the game is roughly 10 to 12 hours for the average user. Significantly shorter if you follow a guide for the whole thing but that's boring and lame.

I did enjoy exploring the areas, wandering around aimlessly and even finding an alternative ending to the game where you drink booze with a friend, play a lute and watch the world go by. I couldn't stop laughing after seeing that. Anyways, if you enjoy things like Dark Souls, Lords of the Fallen and other similar games... There's a good chance you'll enjoy this one too. Pick it up on sale and I doubt you'll complain much. The game is visually gorgeous, and I experienced no issues running it off of a Ryzen 2600X and RX 580 8GB for 1080p. I also had no issues running it on a Ryzen 5800X paired with an RTX 3070 at 4K. I didn't have a single crash, even on days where I had to alt tab endlessly to respond to messages. I don't understand the huge amount of bad reviews, it's far from as bad as most of the reviews make it out to be.

You will have to come up with a much deeper, versatile combat system if you are asking players to overcome such steep initial difficulty curve.

I generally play games to explore their systems and their world, soak in all the atmosphere and move on. I dont play games more than once and in this game the difficulty and the vagueness was so high that i felt it was not worth the effort.

It could be a much better experience if the harden system was not so limited. That is the only new thing that this game brings and the only thing that might have saved the unresponsive attack animations where you can not cancel out of attack animations yet you would not know if it would work on that occasion.

I launched a good trainer for this game, made everything less lethal and more fragile while boosting the harden skills to unlimited. Than it was much less of a chore to learn the ins and outs

Turns out not much to see.

They did manage to add a little twist to the hole class system: shells. You literally wear classes like skin (or shells) and you can switch these during the game. Enemies yield "glimpses" which unlock some lore about the shell and serve as level ups. So far so good. Another addition is the "hardening" mechanic, which briefly turns the player into stone - this game's version of blocking. Otherwise the game offers nothing new. Tar serves as MORTAL SHELL's version of souls.
Now I'm not really a fan of the "SOULS" game mechanics of respawning enemies and repetitious dying. Unfortunately for me there are very few "dark fantasy" games outside the "SOULS" games that nail the atmosphere. If you're a fan of this "new" genre you might hold MORTAL SHELL in a much higher regard.
Enemy variety unfortunately is also lacking - as are the 7 bosses. Yes, MORTAL SHELL is a rather short game. Stone me, but I liked LORDS OF THE FALLEN better.

To add more insult, the game drops you into a point of no return after a certain boss and you are forced to defeat multiple bosses before you are able to go back. There was absolutely no reason to make it a point of no return, many of the enemies have non-telegraphed attacks that create artificial difficulty, similar to the issues with Dark Souls 2, along with hyper-armor to add to that difficulty. The game doesn't let you heal with a potion but you have to scavenge mushrooms that spawn once in a blue moon. After the point of no return, the game also doesn't let you upgrade your weapon at all. First off: I hate that Metacritic counts a 7 as "Mixed". I'd give this a 7/10. The atmosphere, setting, and artwork is very well done, but the combat is a bit clunky. For an indie title I am very impressed, and if you go into this knowing that there wasn't a massive budget behind it you will enjoy your time with it. Don't expect From Soft levels of polish because it isn't here. AlsoFirst off: I hate that Metacritic counts a 7 as "Mixed". I'd give this a 7/10. Enemies are not variety enough (mostly 90% are humaniod, same for bosses) and there are only 4 weapons in the game which are far from enough. Healing by parrying seems interesting at first but it could make the game too hard for someone who is not good at parrying.

In sum, it is good game if you like dark souls and don't have anything to play at this moment, but don't expect too much of it. I hope devs could continue to make better game in the future. For those who want to try, I strongly recommend looking for a map online for the first area, otherwise you might miss out weapons and classes. (It is a bad design, devs should just let you choose them from the start)

This is a great example of interesting ideas executed poorly. I like the concept of quickly recovering your shell to give life another shot, but it doesn't make up for a nearly non existent healing system. Some of the boss fights are interesting, one of the levels has a memorable design and the combat system is pretty good. The combat system is the reason for the average score. I like the combat.

    Pros:

+ Combat is responsive and engaging. I have seen others on here say otherwise, but I didn't experience bad hitboxes.

+ Shell recovery system is interesting. Being able to use the shell as a free heal when you return to where you died was fun, and made me pick it up more strategically than just making a quick "soul run."

+ 2-3 good boss designs and 1-2 good level designs.

    Cons:

-TERRIBLE FINAL BOSS - There is a "water/wave" mechanic that just simply does not work. It is borderline unavoidable, and can leave you skating around the map, unable to escape, attack or defend yourself. Boss is easy AF otherwise.

-Extremely lazy padding to make the game longer than it actually is. Where Dark Souls excels most is world design. When you beat a boss in Dark Souls, there is a quick way out or a path to a new world. There is NONE of that here. NONE. In Mortal Shell, the world turns pitch black after you beat a boss, you get a small red light around you, and now you have to find your way BACK OUT OF THE LEVEL in the DARK, because they didn't design shortcuts back to the main hub. Not only is it dark, but now all of the enemies have turned into the most annoying enemies in the game who seem to only know how to do grab attacks. Some of the worst world design choices I have ever seen.

    - No healing system. Sure, yes, you can buy these really sh*tty healing items, but they are so slow, and they heal so little that they really aren't relevant. I HATE ONLY HAVING CONSUMABLE HEALING ITEMS. If you're going to copy Dark Souls, why abandon such a great healing system?

I cannot really recommend this game, unless available for about $10. Maybe they can turn it around if they decide to make a second game. Not the worst game I have ever played, but if you want a "souls-like," look elsewhere.

Mortal Shells copies every single thing about Dark Souls except the parts that worked. Genuinely, this game is "Dark Souls but the locations and combat feel like a day 1 early access game." Poor exploration and poorer combat damn Mortal Shell as yet another Epic failure.

Negative points for lack of originality on every new souls clone.
Another Souls copy cat that fails to even come close to From Software's masterpieces. Seriously Wait for Demon Souls, it is way better. This is the same thing with one extra gimmick like all these indies games do. You time would be better spent in a good game than grinding the same small depressing areas of this cheap

Strong graphics and a solid game loop. However, the light jank and poor enemy placements makes it hard to get immersed. Overall game experience is a lacklustre Dark Souls.

Now the bad despite the games unique shell system and enthralling environments it’s also got a small amount of bugs and a bit of a slow start but a fun one which is why this has lost 2 points in my review like how parry don't always work and I don’t mean as unparrybles and I didn’t like crawling through a dozen holes in the starting area

However This game is an amazing game and I think it’s worth 30 dollars even though it’s not 10/10 it’s also their first game and it’s not a big dev team Either so considering those facts a 8/10 is fair for this team and a game of this caliber I cannot wait to see more from Cold symmetry

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This'll be my first review using this website and honestly, you don't have to take my word for it, but the game speaks for itself.

Low budget or not, the overall execution of gameplay and game mechanics with this one is mediocre at best. You've got these "shells" that are scattered throughout the map that are OK at best. Some have slightly more hp, some have slightly more stamina, some are a balance between all of them. The problem with this game is that it tries too hard to be like Dark Souls/Bloodborne, and in doing so, it fails miserably.

Take for example the upgrading mechanics. Trash. The map? Literally just a giant maze, crawling through tunnels or taking side paths to find which way to go, and constantly running into overpowered enemies along the way. It's a joke.

Healing items? HAHAHAHA, also a joke. Basically, from what I've played so far, I've only found 2 different healing items. One is a very slow hp regeneration which only gives you half your health back, and the other one gives you about 1/3rd or 1/4th of your health back in exchange for resolve.

Resolve is another funny mechanic. Basically there's no such thing as levelling up in this game. What you get instead are "Glimpses" from enemies or bosses that you kill which go towards unlocking abilities, and these abilities take up your resolve. The only problem with this is, resolve is extremely annoying to gather. Especially when you mistime your parries.

and there's yet ANOTHER funny one. Parrying. It's so god awful it's like someone took the parry animation from Sekiro or something and lowered the speed by 1000%. So essentially with the bulkier enemies, you're forced to parry like 5 seconds in advance before they swing their weapon in order to kill them, and don't even bother fighting them normally because everything in this game is a poise tank and will take more than half your health with each swing.

It's funny that the people who rate this game the best just tell you to "git gud" or something. Did the gaming community regress or something? This isn't about "gitting gud", this is about creating a game with a better budget than a **** B movie.

I'm going to give this a 2 instead of a 1, not because I like it, but because there IS potential for this developer to go back to the drawing board and spend more time on a different IP or game. As it is right now, it's garbage. It needs more healing items, more ways to replenish resolve, an ACTUAL level-up system, and less **** parrying mechanic. Then I could maybe see this being a best seller.

    Cons:
    - Low res textures are pretty noticeable
    - Bosses are too sparse and on the easy side
    - Weapons and shells would benefit from some rebalancing
    - The temples are too linear to traverse
    - The lore is lacking in content and depth
    - Hardening can trivialize a lot of fights
    - I-frames are a bit too generous and make dodging trivial

I think it's a pretty impressive game for the small team that worked on it, the graphics are nice at medium settings I play at. It's pretty short with just a main hub area that ties into the 5 or so levels which are all different. I didn't really get into the whole shell mechanic but it was ok playing all of them, why not just use different outfits and still have the shell mechanic? Guess it wouldn't fit in with the whole thing though. There is about 5-6 different weapons that you can get and all of them are pretty clunky and slow imo, combat needs to be faster overall on the players side, I can see this as a way to make the game last longer along with his slow traversal speed. It's very souls like game but the souls 2 and 3 are of course way better. At first it's really easy to walk in circles in the hub but after a bit you sort of know it. I'm not actually sure if I even finished it, I maxed out all the shells and from what I can tell went to and conquered all the levels but I don't remember a ending boss fight, they are not as structured advancement as souls to me. There is little replay value here as there is not enough content at this time and I don't wish to go through it again. If you are all done with the souls franchise to death and really really want something very similar to it then go for it, if you have not played the souls franchise just go for those. Expand

Let me be clear: I liked this game at first. It got a lot right. It mostly feels good to play, is well optimized and runs well, looks nice, and expands on its world as you go through. It is unapologetically a Dark Souls-like, from not explaining the lore, or items, or anything really, to outright copying the control scheme to the letter. You know what? That's all fine. It is unapologetically a Dark Souls-like, from not explaining the lore, or items, or anything really, to outright copying the control scheme to the letter. You know what? That's all fine. But it gets a lot wrong.

First of all, the open-endedness of the beginning means you can be left without the entire parry mechanic for hours. A crucial, game-centric, end-game mechanic that directly ties to the whole reason your character is in the world doing what they're doing can be 100% overlooked, and indeed I did, for the first 5-10 hours of the game. This is absurd. It reminds me of when I joined the Way of Blue covenant in DS2 and took double damage the entire game without knowing it. Except, I didn't talk to the END GAME BOSS and know WHY I WAS PLAYING for THE WHOLE GAME and couldn't block attacks, because the game didn't tell me where to go, other than the opening cutscene having a camera pan to a tower. Well guess what, I avoided that tower, because it looked dangerous, and EVERYTHING is dangerous, unless you run by it, which seems to be the best strategy.

So, after beating the first boss, and running back to the first zone, I go to the ice zone, and beat that boss. Well, after that, I go to a place called Fallgrim Tower and learn about Glands, and get a Mechanical Spike for my sword, even though I've been using this junky mace for hours now. Turns out, I completely SKIPPED the gland of the first two bosses because I only picked up some item from the boss arenas, because the "glands," just like Fallgrim Tower, did not have enough attention drawn to them and I ran right by them. Holy **** What kind of developer just lets you run by 75% of their game and makes you run back because STORY CRUCIAL ITEMS ARE NOT HIGHLIGHTED? These glands look just like everything else and you have just walked by them before the boss and they didn't have anything there then... Wow.

This game has wasted so much of my time. It could have been good. I see what they were going for, but their aspirations blinded them, as did Epic's buyout. Shame on all of you. Shame, shame, shame.

Mortal Shell is an enjoyable title for those who are already fans of the SoulsBorne sub-genre, and it has more positives than it has flaws. The swamp hub world is bland and confusing, but the different biomes you eventually reach are gorgeous, even if they're relatively familiar. The lack of a deep leveling system has a very good replacement in the shell system, which ends up providing more versatility in your character build and the attack system. The relatively shorter length makes it great for newcomers, while genre veterans will find it to be a great debut effort from a small development team.

If Dark Souls wasn’t sufficiently dark and difficult, this is just the thing for you. Taking the souls-like genre a step further, Mortal Shell provides a satisfying combat system enveloped in a creatively unique narrative. Well worth the suffering. [Issue#305]

Mortal Shell may be a modest product, but it surprised at nearly every turn with regularity. The lack of variety in the environments, weapons, and classes are more than made up by never overstaying its welcome. Whenever it feels as though its about to become stale, players will stumble across something new to try out. The lack of depth isn’t too much of a detriment as the game is short enough to ever feel tired. Better yet, what is there is good, a foundation with easy room to be expanded upon and a strong demonstration of Cold Symmetry’s understanding of core concepts that are the strength of the genre. Mortal Shell is a exemplary use of limited resources to make a tight, fun game, even if it only takes a weekend to beat.
