Different from the standard Heroes formula.

    Cons
    Grinding for meaningless achievements
    No RMG
    Lack of neutral monsters

So there it is, the game looks great, and it plays great—but it doesn’t feel finished. Five factions come with the base game. It’s like the developers didn’t pay any attention to what players liked about the Heroes entries. It’s the diverse strategy and replay-ability, not the cheesy campaigns, that drive this game’s popularity. Even so, the five factions are very different from one another. This game aims to shorten the length of Heroes games by allowing players to choose the talent trees for Heroes, adding a fun element of Blood or Tears to really make four different types of heroes per faction. You can convert conquered towns to match your faction as well. It’s very different, but I didn’t mind that aspect since it made the game feel like a “Risk” board game. The changes made in the game allowed players to customize their hero.

I didn’t mind the idea of rewarding the multiplayer aspect, but then a lot of fun features were locked behind a grind—some of which require well over a hundred games to unlock. If the game had an RMG, that maybe could have worked, but there weren’t many maps to choose from to begin with. And with less factions, there’s less kinds of troops, but somehow the developers thought it was good idea to cut back on neutral monsters as well. As a result, you’ll feel like you’re fighting the same fights over and over again. There were other cut corners in the original game, but the fanbase rallied and convinced the developers to add towns.

It's really easy to summarize this game: it’s a fun game, but the cut corners cheated the game out of its own potential.

I had A LOT of fond memories of playing this game with my father when I was younger, I love anything water related (even though I have a huge thalassophobia) so having a town centered about water creatures and stuff is ideal to me! the campaigns are interesting but not the best executed, but c'mon heroes games are all about playing against someone in a hotseat match

Might & Magic: Heroes VI is something else within the series. It's somewhat simplified, more RPG, and less Turn-Based Strategy. And I think it's really good. In this game, no. The AI is dumb, hard difficulties only make the enemies have more armies, and there is no strategy that can really overcome then, other than fine tuning your turns to perfection while being luck to find good artifacts early on.
For a strategy game to be so reliant on luck, it is disappointing at best.

That's not a careful approach, it's more like an elephant in the glass store.

Still, battles were not so terrible, and graphic was decent. It's not a bad game overall, it's just not HoMM, no matter what name it have.

The graphics is like wow. The atmosphere of and map builds with the little dedails like stattue carved inthe rocks, little ponds stc is breathtaking. You can just take minutes just to look at the scenere. The animations are also nice, I like the variety with the luck bonus. It is generally servicable, but nothing fancy.

We can argue about the streamlined gamplay, personally I like it. I like the town transformation, it makes absolute sense and also the area control. I think if you play it on hard you will need more careful tactics in the battles, but yes, heroes 5 required a lot more thinking and was less forgiving. But it still very very good.

The only negative things are that some sounfs are missing. Like the sound of the ship when it moves and some units give no sound when they move. This is really strange since traveling with ships is quite commons, so maybe this chouce was inetional, but I still miss the shhhhh shhhh shhhh when it moves :) Great game guys do not hesitate to buy it if you see it on sale!

The sequel done wrong: it has very few changes compared to previous title in series and all of those changes make the game worse. Fewer castles, weird and out-of-place rpg system, broken balance. I was playing Heroes 3-5 via hotseat for 15+ years whenever i had an opportunity to play with friends and H6 is complete garbage even in this play mode where most TBS games really shine

One of worse HoMM games that lacks good story and mainly racial abilities... Battles are too simple and dropping down to 4 resources is disappointing. I have expected more. Also, Uplay sucks.

This is the best of the Heroes of Might and Magic games. The only one i enjoyed as much was Heroes II. It keeps what was best from the original Heroes games and adds in several features that improve the game, make it less of a chore late in a mission and just more fun.

Most of all the game is not the same slow grind it could be in previous HOMM games due to some innovations i'll mention
This is the best of the Heroes of Might and Magic games. The only one i enjoyed as much was Heroes II. It keeps what was best from the original Heroes games and adds in several features that improve the game, make it less of a chore late in a mission and just more fun.

Most of all the game is not the same slow grind it could be in previous HOMM games due to some innovations i'll mention next. This makes it more about sometimes having to reload battles or restart missions to try a new tactic than about the logistic of reinforcing armies.

First a hero in any town you control can recruit troops from all towns you control. This speeds up the later stages of each scenario massively as you no longer have to go on a tour of all your towns, or send heroes carrying reinforcements for ages every turn to keep your main field army up to strength.

Second all towns can build town portal that let your hero cast a town portal spell to return to the nearest town if it has one. It can be upgraded into an advanced portal that lets you travel to any other town you control.

Even better you and the enemy can convert towns of other factions that you capture into towns of your own faction type (at a high cost in money, timber and stone - and destroying any buildings they have). So no more having to use undead garrisons to protect your towns if you're a knight or cleric.

The skill and magic systems are an improvement on any other HOMM game - including Heroes III. The units are really interesting and there are also item sets now - which give additional bonuses for having more than one item from the same set on the same hero.

Best of all, during the campaign there are buildings in some scenarios that let you re-choose all your skills for a large amount of money, so no need to replay the campaign from the start if you decide you'd rather have chosen different ones.

There are also some scripted events and 'boss' type creatures, but they are done well and fit fine with the game.

Finally there is a really interesting race - the naga - based on Japanese myths about water spirits. Their armies and heroes can cross water as if it was land and have very different resistances and damage bonuses to other races. The knight / Griffin empire mission against them was especially fun and challenging.

There were some serious problems previously(especially a freeze of the game that couldn't be fixed when viewing the town screen sometimes) but these were fixed in a patch and replaying it after the patch i got none of them.

The campaigns and characters are also excellent. There is a slightly 'console game' feeling to certain parts of it. I'm not generally a fan of console type games, but this one is just an improved version of previous Heroes games and i loved it.

Graphics are good and work well on my slightly older 4-year old Alienware 17 laptop.

My primary complaint is Uplay. It causes constant lockups. I find I have to launch Steam in Offline mode for Uplay to function. I'm constantly losing saved games which end up in sync conflict. I have to always launch Uplay in Admin Mode. It's so annoying that the game is almost unplayable.

I've been really on the fence with purchasing Assassin's Creed and the upcoming Heroes VII. I may wait now until Uplay is no longer causing issues.

It has both great things and really bad, disgusting things I wish Ubisoft would go bancrupt for.

I mean, ghouls from 6 compared to zombies from 5? What sane person would choose Nival's abominaiton over that tasty piece of art design Heroes VI offers?
Heroes VI is absolutely beautiful, with an every single element drawn/rendered into perfection that comes together with everything else, creating the stunning game world you don't really want to leave. Every single thing has its own unique character and in addition to a tasty soundtrack (that borrows from classic HoMM titles) and sounds assets there's really nothing to criticise.

The core gameplay is fine, too. I know some people criticise ditching most of the resources. I was concerned about it too, but it's not a game breaking change. The resources are there to manage and force players to think strategically (what do I need to build, in what order and what should I conquer to make it all work) and since in Heroes VI you will almost never encounter having virtually endless resources (unless you play on the easiest settings of course, but that's how it works in previous games as well), it's tolerable. The resources serve their purpose. Same with the heroes progression. Yeah, HoMM 4's progression is still supreme, but VI's ain't bad as well. Your heroes still will vary a lot depending on what kind of character you want to have.
Same with tactical combat which is way, way, way better than 5's. I think that tactical combat in VI's is th best in the whole series. To play against your friend is pure fun (the AI is - still - pretty bad).

The campaigns are hit'n'miss with a terrible design choice of forcing player into rushing them through, since bosses tend to grow their armies into infinity. The campaign is simply not possible to finish on hard difficulty if you even try to waste one turn on secondary objective.

But then you hit Conflux. Jesus. It makes you want to quit and kill yourself. It's so bad, it mostly kills all the joy from the game, with a terrible mechanic of your "dynasty", dynasty weapons, heroes and treats. Jesus Christ, it's impossible to accurately describe the horror Conflux is.

If they try to implement it in Heroes VII it really can kill the series definitely.

Uplay literally crashed on me dozens of times, so I was unable to play the game (and I'm sorry... players shouldn't be asked to search online for ways to make the game function in spite of the double DRM). I uninstalled it and said good riddance. Then in a state of purist optimism, I installed it again a few weeks later and encountered the some new Uplay problems, which still made the game unplayable.

While I hesitate to admit it, I work at Ubi, and yes, we, the developers, hate Uplay too. Maybe that admission will get the company to dump it. I will never buy another Ubi game on PC again. It's too bad, because while the game doesn't have the magic of heroes III, it's still pretty fun.

Personally, I do not understand the large number of negative comments on the game, especially if you browse Steam's reviews... 90% of the complaints about the game all stem from Uplay. I will admit, having an additional DRM can be slightly (and I mean slightly...) irritating, but honestly? People are giving the game 0/10 due to it and it has absolutely no real affect on the game itself... It's not stopped me playing it, nor has it stopped me downloading patches etc, it simply opens up a new client when you run the game.

So, that pet peeve down, the game itself:

Graphically, the game does look nice and so far the story has been at least average. The voice acting is pretty poor I'll admit, but the cheesiness of it kind of adds to the games charm.

The gameplay is much as you would expect from the style of game. Does it get repetitive? Sure... But so do other HoM&M games and similar games such as Disciples etc. The combat is pleasant enough, though enemies have a tendancy to completely ignore units right infront of them and make a bee-line straight for your ranged units.

That's my only real complaint, and it could be rectified by adding in some form of opportunity attack should a unit move whilst adjacent to a melee unit.

I haven't played the MP and chances are I never will as I rarely have time for this sort of game online, but as a whole, the game's kept me pretty occupied for the last couple of days since I bought it, so I would definitely recommend, particularly if you can get hold of it whilst it's on sale.

So, I would personally give this an 8/10. It could be argued as 6-7/10, but due to the number of unfair reviews, I am willing to give it a bit higher.
