I haven't been able to play this game for many years, even though I really wanted to. It seemed like a failure compared to the first game. First of all, the size of the game takes up too much space even for today. 100 GB is a very exaggerated size. It's hard to understand why they decided to release it without compressing it like this.

Speaking of wishing for a better adversary though I did have to skip the spider lady diolauge its a bit boring and I dislike her collectibles. and there were so many things I loved about the main game including getting my new fresh orc drip that a pried off a corpse to health regeneration runes that allow me to drain the life of orcs like a vampire to orcs releasing a balrog and it gets away but the campaign slowed down a bit and I stoped at about 60% but that doesn't matter because I loved the 3rd campaign plundering my way through Mordor with a mercenary army and I smashed it in one go in a 2h 27min joy ride and playing as the elf kind of blows her light ability sucks and you need it to get the gemstone bonuses during missions (only one set of gems btw and they kind of suck). I wish Talion was a lot more hateful and stronger maybe acting as an opposing force perhaps as we trade blows with our armies of orks. I find it Hilarious that she refuses to use the ring to magically compulse orcs like Talion and Kalabrimbor and Sauron but shes ok with brutally murdering them and her subordinate orcs have no qualms binding war trolls on their hands and knees capturing animals and forcing them to be war beasts and use slave labor to build their forts sometimes calling them "workers" even though they have brands their forehead like cattle. there's even a skill you can unlock that causes them to explode and kill their allies like an involuntary orc suicide bomber but this one gets partially carried by the orcs who are even better in her campaign they have way stronger personalities and they're a joy to fight with even though there quests are boring and scripted but all in all loads of fun don't buy it just get the fitgirl repack. Middle-earth™: Shadow of War™ is a well-crafted action game that is likely to appeal to fans of the original installment. While the game's graphics may not be stunning, they do not detract from the immersive gameplay experience.

Although I have yet to complete the story, I have found it to be more engaging than that of its predecessor. Additionally, the game appears to have greater length and depth, with a variety of quests and areas to explore.

One of the game's standout features is its diverse cast of orcs, captains, warchiefs, and overlords, each possessing a unique set of traits and abilities. This adds a layer of complexity and intrigue to the gameplay.

Overall, Shadow of War is a standout title from 2017, particularly given its ties to the beloved Lord of the Rings lore. Although the game's name could be more distinctive, it is a highly enjoyable addition to the action gaming genre.

An interesting sequel in many ways, but it doesn't hit quite the same as the first one.

    Pros:
Greatly expanded Nemesis system from the first game. Super interesting mechanics and interactions.
Interesting musical flair added during battles (synced to hits landing). Might become annoying with time.
Micro-transactions were removed after the significant backlash.

    Cons:
Visually, it feels like a knock-off Witcher 3. Saturated colours and so on, but just not polished enough to actually look good. The bleak and dark aesthetic of SOM was much more gripping and fitting to the series' depiction of Mordor.
Mechanics overload - every button has 12 different actions and you will end up not using many of them.
Nemesis mini-cutscenes are unskippable - this becomes annoying when you hear the same dialogue repeatedly.
Performance is not as sharp as first game.
Making the orcs more goofy instead of brutal was a straight-up bad call. Creatures that are supposed to be violent and bashful are now quirky and clumsy. It feels less epic to control them.
Significantly more grind-heavy than the previous game.
Why does the main character look so disfigured compared to his model in the first game? What happened?

I really enjoyed it, as a Tolkien nerd it plays a bit fast and loose with canon, but it has the feel of the Peter Jackson movies. It is essentially a 3rd-person exploration/fighting game similar in gameplay to the Arkham and Assassin's Creed games. You explore Mordor, kill hundreds of orcs and also build up your own orc forces to capture fortresses.

Graphically it is very good for the time and has an art style that fits what I expect from the setting. What keeps it from being a standard action RPG is the Nemesis system. Orcs have their own command structure and by killing or dominating orc captains you can affect the world. Orcs can gain in levels and abilities, and hunt each other down. Your captains can betray you, or rescue you at a critical moment.

The innovation over the previous game is the fortress dynamic, you can build up your forces, infiltrate enemy captains' bodyguards and eventually conquer a fortress gaining a base and controlling a region.

My only complaint is that the fortress assaults are such a fun part of the game, I wish there were more of them. Also, the combat can be a bit grindy and is best played in small batches.

There is a loot system based on the type of tribes you face and a streamlined crafting and upgrade system, that doesn't get in the way of the fun parts of the game.

Overall it is a fun game with great visuals and an understanding of what makes Middle Earth a cool game setting.

You can put spies and minions as well which can help you take over them in a strategic manner. The game finally gives you to fight Balrog but the boss-battle would have been more epic if it was not just defeating him by giving him acupressure. I like how they changed Shelob to a goth lady from a spider and enriched the story with her. After you watch the first ending of the game, you bring Order to Mordor which is very tedious process of conquering and defending the castles over and over again until you finally get the true ending. The DLC is great as you play with minor characters which come in the main story but have their own weapon system and gadgets which make it fun. Expand

My theory is, Game developers had found a new Game Design mechanics which is Nemesis system, and they made this game for only trying this mechanic. And that was obvious the lack of every aspect of the game. However, in the new sequel, the game has largely completed all the missing pieces in the old game.
With the new improvement, i can hardly found a bad aspect of the game. Open world size is enough. Not so small and neither not so big. New open world is much more livefull with great buildings and living spaces. But still there is almost none wild life, and this is a realy big lack for the open world.
Open world event and main quest designs variety are too few. There is only few quest types for main quest and either open world events. But thanks to nemesis system and joyful core game mechanics, this small variety doesn't disturbt the player too much.
Game's mechanics are definitely good enough. There is too many mechanics in the skill tree, and the quest rewards. All the animations, platform and combat mechanics, visualities are satisfying enough.
Game's story is not that attractive. Most of the main characters are far from emotionality. All the characters except for Celebrimbor and shelob's are feeling like soulless dolls. Story lines and the cut scene's are definitly not the strongest point of the game.
It was a tasty game on middle earth world. I finished the game and never seen a microtransaction. I liked the game, and happy for playing a game on Tolkien's world.

Shallow, repetitive gameplay, horrible story written by some of the worst 'writers' out there, lore-wise a complete bastardization of Tolkien's great work. This game is the very embodiment of a soulless husk meant only to separate people from their money.

It's not bad at all. I've started it in 2021 so there weren't any microtransactions. The gameplay is fun, graphics are not out dated and the grinding - rpg style makes it even more interesting.

Very good combat system, well written dialogs, good story. Similar to shadow of mordor, it is a turbocharged version that continues to lead the story. The nemesis system includes several options, new siege system came in, which is very enjoyable. Fantastic game

I bought this game at a discount on Steam in 2021, after most, if not all, of the micro-transactions had already been removed. Many of the user reviews focus on that admittedly ugly stain on the game, so I think it's important to point that out because even without them I still didn't enjoy the experience as much as I had hoped. This is a 6 out of 10, closer to a 5 than a 7, and I wouldn't recommend buying it unless at a discount or if you're REALLY desperate for more of the same gameplay as the previous installment.

I had a lot of fun with Shadow of Mordor, the previous game of the franchise, and just like then, the nemesis system absolutely carries Shadow of War on its back, that's undeniable. It serves as both the main source of fun and surprise in the game and, by comparison, a condemnation of everything else, because the orcs manage to be so much more interesting than any of the main characters or anything about the main plot. The random encounters and relationships you develop with orcs feel organic, engaging and full of personality, whereas the main questlines feel stale, boring and entirely by-the-numbers. Here's what 90% of the quests in the game amount to: first, meet this NPC in an arbitrary, eerily empty location in the world, typically with them just turning a corner like you're all hanging at a park instead of in the middle of orc-central, then you exchange 4 to 6 lines of dry and unimaginative dialogue and proceed to follow said NPC for a few minutes before killing a bunch of orcs. Repeat the same routine again and again for the next 50 hours and yes, the game ends up a massive slog, specially once you reach act II. There's no central hub, no logic to why or when you're meeting any of the characters, and once a quest ends NPCs just walk away into nothing, vanishing entirely from the world until they teleport back in for the next quest.

Even if we commend Warner Bros. for eventually removing the micro-transactions, it's also undeniable that the game was tailored to emphasize numbers and grinding more than fun in many ways, so they took away the greedy money-earning mechanism but the underlying structure that originally supported said mechanism is still there, ingrained throughout the game. Most of the weapon and gear drops are just a cheap rotation of the same 5, weak gear sets; the rune system is so simplistic and uneventful that there's barely any tangible sense of progress nor impact in different configurations, it's just bloat, something to help justify item drops from orcs, and while we're on the subject of bloat, there are also side-quests which just amount to going to a spot and pressing a single button - Shelob memories are literally just a single cutscene broken into dozens of still frames. Never before have I felt so tempted to just abandon a game mid-playthrough out of raw boredom like this.

The soundtrack is completely unremarkable, at its best managing to be a pale imitation of tracks from the Lord of the Rings. Talion and Celebrimbor bicker and argue, but instead of it feeling genuine or engaging it's just tiring, dry and annoying. The fortresses you can conquer at each zone feel copy-pasted - sure, there are cosmetic differences depending on the tribe of each overlord, but they're completely superficial - they all share the same blueprint and are conquered in the exact same way, even though it would have been easy to modify them in response to the environment of each zone. What's worse is that even once you've conquered all fortresses in the world nothing meaningful changes. There are still massive encampments of enemies everywhere, and you don't feel like you've made any impact on the region, just switched a few flags from red to blue.

I finished the game tired and underwhelmed, having gotten bored with the lack of variety some 15 hours in and just trudging through the main quests to at least finish the game properly. It could have been so much better than this!

Shadow of War is, quite literally, everything Shadow of Mordor was, exept better, bigger and more in every way possible. I spent, no joke, somewhere around 10 **** hours just running around Minas Ithil - the first location - killing orks, leveling up and disabling outposts. And as a result I was kind of blown away by the sieges, the new beast riding, new nemesis options and the nemesis system in general. It's even more impressive here, with so much enemy virety - both gameplay and aesthetic - that you will be having consistent fun and drama with it throughout your playthrough. Thanks to it, the fairly gripping story and loot collecting, time just flies. It wouldn't be long before you find your routine, and the game is appropriately long so that you won't get bored with it. The endgame is fairly decent too, basically being just a bit more of Shadow of War for those who loved it. Shadow of War was an unfortunate event in almost every way possible, pissing everyone off at release and cementing Warner Bros. as a truly awful entity. But for what it's worth, Shadow of War is an amazing game, well worth the time and effort the team has poured into it, and it is worth your time as well. Expand

But Monolith compromised the integrity of their game in order to include them. And that i think is a real shame. The second is that the end of the game was a chore. Boss animations. There will be a point when you get so annoyed and tired from the unskippable animations of enemies making cringe statements. It was cool the first three hours but then it will just waste the time.

The story is luckily entertaining that until the end, where everything feels so rushy. It's as if they expect the players to be LOTR experts. It looks like they just skipped some major stories to explain the upcoming events. I know that the game is referencing to the film series but also it would be helpful if they just kept the same pace and not make the ending look like an unfinished game. Can't be that hard if you just recycle most things from the previous game, right? Horrible finish of the main character's story

Rated this a 10 to offset the many ridiculous 0 ratings. This is a very good game, with interesting game, a ton of content, heaps of lore, and funny moments. Yes, microtransactions suck, but you aren't forced to use them. Honestly, it's an 8.5/10 from me, worth a buy.

The story is fine, might get repetitive at some point but I was having fun till that happened. However, the game lags, freezes, sometimes also crashes. Loading a fortress defence takes about 5-10 minutes each time, while assigning a captain for a slot freezes the game for another 2-4 minutes for every 6 or 7 slots. As for the gameplay, some perks such as "no chance" or "adapted" are unfun to play against. Who the hell thought that if you die during a fortress defence, it is a loss already? It means that your captains automatically flee or won't fight anymore? A pity. Defending it is such a mess anyways, if your captains die in a middle of enemies, you have no chance to revive them because there is no way to target them, system will target anyone but him. But at least we have microtransactions in a 60$ game :D Expand

As of today, it seems micro-transactions have left the game (?), haven't noticed them anyway.

They chose to build the entire gameplay of their sequel around that "dominate captain" feature. Find suitable captains to dominate and build your army with, attack the fortress, rinse, repeat. Shadow of War did more than Shadow of Mordor but oddly enough it ended up feeling like too little, and certainly worse than the prequel.

Fast travel crashes the game, so I can't change region... which the game doesn't explain how to do anyways... I'm at a loss for words... Oh! yeah, and you get 1-shot because of the Nemisis System... so there's that... Seroiusly breaks the pace of the game.

When the game started, I discovered that if I declined the Terms of Service, I could disable the Market and all Loot Box content (including the Silver Edition Lootboxes I paid an extra $20 for). Therefore no one can look at my opinion and think I'm biased just because of Microtransactions, because in my gameplay, they were entirely disabled.

This game is equivalent to the very first Assassin's Creed, but with a Lord Of The Rings reskin, written and directed by a greedy fanboy. The content is functional but limited. The story is average, occasionally boosted by likable and even humorous orcs, yet at the same time often feels soulless. The gameplay is functional, but nothing truly unique when compared to other games of the recent past. The randomly generated orcs...both the best, and worst part of the game: they're creative in design, ability and behavior; yet they are the spawned outcome of a randomly generated number that the game decides without any regard for your action or playstyle, because they're based on the integrated Lootbox system, and are therefore not supposed to be unique—otherwise orcs from Lootboxes would be different from orcs found in gameplay, and render the microtransaction system less beneficial.

This is the summation of my thoughts, based on the time I spent playing (again, with a Disabled Market/Microtransactions/Lootboxes).

I loved Shadow Of Mordor, I had high hopes for Shadow Of War. Sadly, the horrific impact of Warner Brothers has left a stain on the game, if not the franchise, through it's continued mishandling of intellectual property: within which WB itself would be the enemy of mankind, were J.R.R. Tolkien himself to write an adaptation of this story, in addition to flagrant disregard for ethics; specifically towards what is becoming legally recognized as a form of gambling (Lootboxes), in addition to avoiding labor laws on other projects, not to mention the whole controversy surrounding the death of a Monolith Developer. Bottom line, what could have been an enjoyable experience has been twisted and warped, and is hardly the game I had been hoping for.

It's got a overall Mostly Positive rating on Steam. I'm not one to judge the community; if people like it, great. If you yourself enjoy this game, then do have fun with it. But despite wanting to like it, I couldn't enjoy Shadow of War. Whatever heart was poured into this game, was utterly corrupted by greed, as demonstrated by one particular scene:

Let me call to your attention a moment where one of the orcs you encounter who is important to the story. After joining the protagonist's side, he offers to share his knowledge with Talion regarding orcs and how they function. There's a cutscene that plays, in order to explain specifically, the Combat Arena: a "minigame" that is essentially nothing more than a mobile game: you select one of your orcs, and your orc duels an enemy orc. You have no influence over the outcome, essentially making it a 'game of chance' (I won't insult your intelligence by pointing out what that technically is). During this cutscene, the orc, who is written to be friendly and likable, speaks to you—not Talion, the character—but to you, the player, in a first-person cutscene, in which his dialogue is explicitly written to compel you to give this 'minigame' a try, with the outcome potentially coercing or forcing you to buy microtransaction orcs to get better results.

With the potential present in which your orc will be killed, and the only options for regaining orcs being lengthy gameplay to recruit orcs, or the easier option of "buying orcs" via Lootboxes, I'd hope that anyone, even those without a comprehensive understanding of Gambling Mechanics, Advertisement, Marketing and Business principles, can recognize how this system is inherently designed to guide a player (who has already spent between $60 - $100), to invest more time or real-world money, in this situation. I won't get into the ethics of it, but I will point out that there was a time when games were built to be played and enjoyed first and foremost, not to be tools that, in a very real sense, scheme to manipulate gamers into emptying their wallets further.

    The Good
Nemesis System - One of the best Game mechanics to come out of the gaming industry.
Decent Combat Mechanics - Talions Skill tree makes for a fluid play style.
Some Canon Bending story - a positive for me since I am a Tolkien Noob.
Look and Feel - The world is Breath taking though often same feeling at times, nevertheless easy to get sucked into the story.

The Bad - Oh My... here we Go
The Camera - Often had an Unresponsive camera during battle and traversing which respectively makes getting stuck in the world and off screen attacks very prominent, the camera would routinely not respond to my input of a camera pan.
The Pit Fights - OMG this is the biggest offender in my opinion as all of the ferocity that you face while fighting the Enemy seem to disappear in the pit, they just poke, prod and make noises at each other compared to the fights you have with the captains. This along with a stupidly imbalanced RNG that can have your dominated characters die to low level scrubs, this is just a stupid waste of time especially since you will spend a lot of time in the pit fights.
The Controls - It feels like the controls are fighting back at you almost all the time, Talion will often face and attack, move or preform an action in the direction opposite to where you are facing. The highly slick Arkham series of Combat scheme that made us love the first Shadow of Mordor is downright unfinished and unpolished here.
Excessively Grindy - This game really gave me my money's worth with side-quest busy work... But most of it is meaningless busy work since the EXP for the main missions and kills seems severely throttled as u cross level 25. No doubt designed to force players to buy the nasty loot boxes and exp boosts.. which got even worse once the said loot boxes were removed since the grind was already inbuilt into the game.
Act 4 GrindWall - Of course. But since Enough has been said about this considering the 3.5 user score I am not gonna elaborate. It just feels like a giant disappointment to not finish the game considering all the noted cons you have to deal with just for the True ending. Just Youtube it.

All in all Sadly this highly anticipated game turned out to be very underwhelming for me since Shadow of Mordor was a refreshing firestorm and scratched the itch of more Batman Arkham feels.

This leads to the removal of microtransactions back in 2018. So in 2019 I finally get around to play and finish this game. DId I have a good time? Yes, I did. But this good time was haunted by moments of pain and suffering. Let me tell you one thing: my PC isn't the strongest nor the weakest one out there. But the first time, I tried to play Shadow of War, the game would just not start. Turns out the only solution, I found on the internet, that worked was installing INTERNET EXPLORER 11. Can you imagine? This is laughable. Internet explorer should not be necessary to play a game. Internet explorer should be buried deep down in the ground and rot in a shallow grave. With the help of amazing Internet Explorer 11, I was finally able to run this game. It's great. The game is great. Nemesis system is amazing, gameplay is too. I loved the graphics and audio as well. You know what I didn't like? The story. You know why? Because no way in hell this would happen. This is not canon. And it saddens me, because half of the ideas here are actually good and could enrichen the Tolkien universe. The rest of the ideas were so garbage, they should be buried in the same grave that Internet explorer is supposed to be not running a f**** 2017 game. Other things I loved were: shaming orcs, dominating orcs, killing orcs, talking to orcs, making love to orcs, get killed by the orcs, sending death threats to orcs, cutting out orc limbs, starting a Nickelback tribute band with orcs, having breakfast with orcs, what about a second breakfast with orcs, going to Limp Bizkit show with orcs, Orcs And Recreation and other cool activities that orcs were involved in. Guess, what I didn't like. F**** bugs. At one point, I was retaking a fortress and Talion just fell down... below the textures into the void. It's still a better fate, that what the screenwriters for this game gave him. Other than bugs, there were more problems with the game. Especially running it. Sometimes the game just wouldn't start. You'll ask me: why?. My answer: I don't know. There would be a black screen. Sometimes changing the graphic settings from ultra to high would help. But later they wouldn't. Later changing to low would help. Then to very low. Then back to ultra. Later nothing would help and the game would just work magically or not. You'll tell me "oh your PC must be **** or something, update your graphic card drivers etc etc etc". Well, I'm not a f***** moron buddy and I know these things, my PC is completely healthy and vegan. All the other games work perfectly, but for some unknown reason a s***stain called Shadow of War just wouldn't. Still, I liked this game. I wouldn't consider this a waste of time, because the orcs make up for it. Ratbag is a bae. I loved the ending to this game (and I also laugh at the fact how s**** the dlcs for this game are and destroyed that ending). But I have a better idea for the ending of Shadow Of War. Talion and Ratbag become actual best friends and destroy all evil in the world including Sauron and other c*nts. At the end Talion dies, going back to his family and Ratbag changes the orc ways for the better and there's peace. Nice, right? Check this out you Monolith Productions bastards, make this a plot for the third game. Shadow Of Friendship. I'd play that. Thanks for reading this retarded review and see you next time. A lot of people were upset to find out that Shadow of War has loot boxes, and they are kind of annoying. Unfortunately, loot boxes is the least of its problems.
