Master of Magic is a combination of an RPG and a strategy game, a remake of a classic from the 90s.

In Master of Magic you take up the role of one of 14 unique and diverse great wizards who compete with each other to dominate the worlds of Arcanus and Myrror. Choose from different schools of magic and fantasy races to command, then lead your minions and expand your influence and power across the land.

Recruit and command mighty armies of elves, dragons, dwarves, orcs and many more. Support them with powerful spells. Fight tactical turn-based battles and affect the outcome with your magic.

Always beware of the machinations of your rival wizards, who seek to reach your same goals. But in the end, remember: there can be only one Master of Magic.

A faithful recreation of the original game that came out in 1994. The original was considered the best in his genre for decades. This remake is "only" among the best today and it's an extremely good 4X game.

Overall Master of Magic seemed like a good recovery operation of a classic. Starting the game, one perceives that there is no desire for revolution.

The strategy classic has been transformed into a modern version that carries with it the joys and sins of the original game.

The Master of Magic remake is an ambitious project which, however, has never decided whether to be just a graphic restoration or a complete makeover of the original. It’s still a decent 4X video game, but nothing more. Ultimately, if I had to choose between the remake and the original one, I would opt for the latter without hesitation.

Master of Magic is an interesting remake of an old game that defined a genre. It’s clear that the development team loves the original and wanted to keep as much of it unchanged as possible. But the result feels old and might struggle to attract the attention of players who have not enjoyed the 1994 title. I grew up playing a ton of Heroes of Might & Magic, so I had a clear reference point for the mechanics and pace. For newcomers, the entire experience can be a little slow and somewhat bewildering. But for those who have a history with strategy and RPG mixes, Master of Magic will deliver well-executed classic ideas and tens of hours of spell-enhanced fun.

This remake is so faithful to the original game released in 1994 that it ignores achievements of many successful rivals released over the last 28 years. If you wanted to play Master of Magic with improved graphics and modern controls, this game was made for you.

3D remake of the 1994 classic with 14 races and tons of troop types and spells. Few comfort functions, needs a lot of patience.

In my opinion, the developers achieved most goals, by staying faithful to the 1994 Simtex/MicroProse classic, with a few annoying pitfalls, such as a flawed GUI and weak (compared to other Slitherine games like Fantasy General and WH Gladius: Relic of War) combat AI. Luckily, the game has a (mostly) open source code, so future mods and DLCs will fill in these gaps. A present, it's 87-89% for me. Expand
