A unique (for its time, at least), well executed RPG/TPS hybrid much in the same vein as BioWare's Knights of the Old Republic. Sometimes more enjoyable to watch (cut-scenes, conversations) than to play (combat is not the game's strong-point).

I was brought into the series at Mass Effect 2 ended up slaughtering most of my crew because I was noob. So I decided to migrate to Mass Effect, and realized it was even better than two. I say the following honestly. One of the best games ever; and if you play it, you'll think so too.

THE GOOD: Mass Effect is an SF RPG/shooter, with an immersive story, a large and diverse set of maps, cool art and Bioware's trademark cinematic story-telling at its best. So far I've only done one playthrough so I can't tell for sure, but it probably also has plenty of C&C. Your character is given motivation. He or she is put in difficult moral situations and has to overcome the misperceptions of others. Moral ambiguity is what makes an adult RPG, and you get your share here. THE BAD: Here is where I take off points.

-1 The game crashes frequently, especially during the driving sequences. I'm probably running into the problems people have when running the game on a quad. It crashed so frequently it was unplayable on a 9:16 resolution, and I had to switch to 3:4 which warps everything on my monitor but was more stable.

-1 The lore. Now you might rightfully criticise me for playing something in a genre that I don't like, but hear me out. I take my SF very seriously, which is why I don't like Hollywood movie SF. There must be a smarter way of portraying other "races" of intelligent creatures than with anthropomorphic English-speaking space aliens. I like to keep my aliens completely alien in the way of Stanislaw Lem.

-1 The combat. You have limited control over your team and there is relatively little need for tactics. Your promotions are mostly add a few percentage points here or there, such as to health or gun power. The talents are a bit silly. How is it a talent to be able to shoot your gun really quickly?

I won't take anything away for other flaws. The dull romance you get with Ashley, the dialog options for persuasion and intimidation that make NPCs magically do what you want, your NPC team mates being a bit dull generally. I'll forgive all that because of the story.

In spite of its flaw ME1 is a good game, and it was a good way to spend my New Year's weekend.

Missions become a little repetitive and the side quests are pretty much clones of each other even going as far as whole buildings having the same layout even if they were built lightyears apart. Overall though I was always having fun except when trying to manage the poor inventory system. If you're into your sci-fi and your shooters, this is a must. Expand

If you're a fan of Bioware RPGs and especially if you're into sci-fi, you won't be disappointed by Mass Effect if you overlook the few minor UI quirks - however, those against draconian DRMs, who like to feel that they actually own the game or tend to like a bit of variety in their side quests, may have to look elsewhere.

The Good: Fluid controls, excellent mix of characters, 6 different classes to chose from, fully voiced NPCs, and an array of weaponry and talents exceeded only by MMOs or Borderlands. The Bad: No XB360 controller support, difficult to apply the DLC (to my Steam version at least), and hard to configure for those wishing to play on 16:10 displays.

Overall - One of the reasons I did not play Mass Effect when I bought it in 2008 was that the story seemed to drag. Aside from the fact that I was hip-deep in WoW, I would have gladly played the game if it got off to a bang (like ME2 does; BioWare took notice of this flaw and fixed it in the second installment), but the game does not move or begin to make any sense until you are about 3 hours into it and taking your first mission away from Citidel Station.

The greatest appeal for me was the ability to play he lead role of Commander Shepard as a female with a fully voiced role, supported by BioWare's multipathed conversation selections. I felt a connection with the character, and was able to see the galaxy from her eyes. It was also impressive that BioWare created an opportunity for the character to enter an emotional/physical relationship with with either male or female members of the crew. The male relationship can be meaningful or trite, and the female relationship was well written and classy; it did not come off as a twenty-something male's **** More than likely BioWare consulted women of experience to write those scenes. Mission play is great, with some missions affecting the main storyline of Shepard's pursuit/investigation of Saren, and other will designed side-missions to assist you with character development (more levels, money, guns, and skills are earned this way). Missions can vary in length from 10 mins (if you whiz though it) to 4 hrs. Additionally, DLC missions are available from BioWare's site; Bring Down the Sky is free and lasts 3 hrs, while Pinnacle Station costs $5, and allows you to develop your character in a holo-training environment. Both DLC packages are side-missions with no effect on the main story; you don't have to get them, but they are worth the $5. Aside from it's global appeal, Mass Effect has earned a rightful place in my personal gaming hall of fame. If you don't have it, go get it. If you do have it, take the time to do EVERYTHING the game has to offer...the stories and content are well beyond that of 99% of the games that are out there.

The weapon/armor choices and upgrades are the best the series has to offer. The only thing that sets the original back from the second and third is the combat. Mass Effect's battles don't feel as smooth, especially aiming and the use of skills. Also, having unlimited ammo actually makes the game feel less realistic. It is although important to mention that the first is the most challenging in my opinion, where I found myself dying even on normal difficulty. I am not talking about the obvious morale decisions- which you can find in every game, but on the small things you only find out if you pay attention- from unlocking missions by investigating your squed crews (Only some of them, of course) to the brief talks your crew memebers have in the elevator, and to how by selecting different members you effect the ongoing of specific core-missions and side missions. Your character doesn't say a sentence that you don't choose. Bioware uses it's notoriously perfect dialogue wheel. During some very original missions you will be making hard choices that effect the story. The characters are a gold mine for Bioware. The RPG elements are there some may be exaggerated, but still fun. There are a lot of tweaks for weapons and armors. You can fully characterize your Shepard with looks, classes, even his scars and history. Mass Effect is an unpolished diamond and isn't perfect. There are three issues in the game. Auto-Save will rarely happen and it's a discipline to keep quick saving, make sure you holster your weapon and revive your squad mates or you won't be able to quick save. Another issue comes from long exploring and the tank Mako missions those could get really boring, but it's possible drive trough combat as long as the shield holds. Usually players will consider the combat the biggest problem, but remember when this game was made combat didn't get great as this. Your squad mates will be useful especially cause of their abilities. And with the RPG element combat gets interesting. However the AI can sometimes crash, talking about crashing there is a popular overheating bug for weapons at certain locations. If you manage to get trough the combat issues you will enjoy the wast galactic adventure. Expand

While the inventory system is somewhat unwieldy and managing gear becomes more of a chore later in the game, it does provide one with plenty of options and opportunity to specialize gear for specific play styles, missions, and enemy types. The game's biggest flaw is its infamous vehicle sections, which are often a huge pain, but this is a small part of the game and one need not spend much time on these sections if they are bothered too much. The reason why I'm only giving this an 8 out of 10 is because of the annoying Inventory system and because all the sidequests are too boring and have very similar map layouts, which takes a lot of fun out of the game, unfortunately.

After reading all of the other user reviews, I think you either love or hate this game based on whether you are interested in story and adventure (love) or technical excellence and action (hate). This is a story-driven game with a lot of locations to explore and a lot of backstory that is revealed gradually through dialog and journal entries as the game goes on.

To give you some idea of why I like this game, the last few games I really loved were the Thief series, Deus Ex, and Dreamfall. Here's a quick summary of what I think is good and bad about Mass Effect:

GOOD: Deep story. Many characters to interact with if you choose, but only a few that you are forced to interact with to move the game along. Mini-game lock-pick system that is challenging but not frustrating. Tons of optional side quests, so you can skip them if you just want to cut to the chase, or do them if you're enjoying yourself and want to prolong the experience. Pretty good voice acting, in my opinion. Good third-person camera movement. Graphics were good, not excellent, for 2008.

BAD: A bit glitchy; locked up on me three times during 50+ hours of gameplay. Some frame-rate lag, even with my 2012 graphics card. Less than perfect lip-syncing (but not terrible for a 2008 game). Most of the RPG elements such as level-ups and experience points are incidental to the actual game experience; you could blast your way through without paying any attention to your character's develop and not really miss much.

Personally, I liked the "good" and wasn't bothered by the "bad," so I liked Mass Effect a lot and look forward to playing ME2.

Amazing start to a fantastic series. Worth playing. Storyline very compelling, on its own the story is somewhat good but ordinary, but combining it with the 2nd and 3rd games makes it a completely creative and compelling masterpiece. Whoever says you can skip this one is lying, I recommend playing this first if possible.

On the contrary, the RPG customization looks well-realised, providing a good amount of classes, items and abilities. The galaxy map is single-handedly intriguing, surrounded by the empty void of the dark space. The planets graphical rendering may look dull; however, the chemistry of music and simple barren plains adds to the feeling of a far more plausible space exploration. Beyond that, Mass Effect tells an original and, much to my astonishment, unsettling story. It mesmerises with its brilliant vision of a universe ruled by a hierarchy of different races, humanity not being, for the first time, one of them. The rising evil depicted throughout the plot will force the player to beg for questions over the relativity of humanity attitude towards the universe. Eventually, this is a thorough-to-master game, at least to grasp its very sci-fi/rpg essence. Nevertheless, it does worth trying. Expand

Other than that, I have not had so much fun playing a game since the original Space Quests, or perhaps Dragon Age: Origins. You hop around the galaxy, you walk through the Citadel, you talk to your squad on the Normandy, you snuggle up with blankets, you listen to the lovely music and you just let yourself be enveloped by the game and by the world. Mass Effect is a feelgood game that just plain gives you hope for gaming.

Combat feels clunky and frustrating at first, when Shepard wants to take cover against any wall, any corner you come close to in the heat of battle, and not always obeying your frantic button-mashing, but you soon realize itâ

The fact of the matter is that Mass Effect is a game worth playing. I'll admit that there are some aspects that could be done better, such as repetitive missions, occasional glitches and average music, but this is more than made up for by the rest of the game. The decisions were never easy to make and are made all the more important by the fact that your choices will stick with you for ME2 and ME3, which is an absolutely fantastic idea. The difficulty levels were also superb, I found that there were a few moments that would get me sufficiently frustrated, forcing me to work out a better way through the level, maximising the use of my squad, but not so frustrated that it made me turn off the game.

All in all, Mass Effect is a game well worth playing, especially for the fact that you carry on your save file to ME2.

You can't even add the cd-key of the game to EA's Origin service without help from a support representative, as the page to do so will tell you the registration was successful but then not add the game to your library. As for flaws in the game itself, skipping conversations is hard to do without accidentally picking a dialogue option sometimes because the skip key is the same key used to select an option. Also there is way too much loot in the game for the low inventory limit you have. You will tire of the "you are getting close to the 150 item limit" message very quickly. Other than that, the game is pretty short for a RPG but it's enjoyable, and the dialogue system adds to replay value because of the different options you get depending on whether your character leans toward good (paragon) or evil (renegade). And you'll definitely want to play this game just to get to its sequels if you haven't played it already! Expand

Another thing I really loved about Mass Effect was how well the personalities of characters were developed, especially your party members. Of the 6 available party members, I ended up using them all at some stage. There were never any benchwarmer characters as is common with many party-oriented RPGs. I haven't even gotten to the gameplay yet. The RPG elements are superb. You get to choose between 6 different character classes, and even within each class there are many skills and abilities which you can learn in whichever order you want. When interacting with the NPCs, you get to choose every single line that your character says. That is how much variation there is in the game's dialogue. And the things you say greatly affect how other characters feel about you. There is a lot of freedom in the game, in a sense that you can roam about the entire galaxy and do sidequests as you see fit. Even most of the primary quests you can do in any order you wish. There were of course a few things I could nitpick. For example the control of Mako (the tank) was a bit frustrating at times, but any flaws are very minor and do not detract from the amazing experience that this game offers. Now I am going to play Mass Effect 2, and according to what I hear, it is even better. If that's the case, I am prepared to have my mind blown away. Expand

The plot was decent, but I don't really like the idea of playing a game that I know from the outset will not deliver "THE END". Most of the options to be a 'Renegade' or a 'Paragon' had little to no effect on the game.

Overall you can see that far more effort went into making this a polished multimedia experience than making a fun game. I will play the sequel, but if it is not a significant upgrade I will be skipping the third installment.

Really a great game that started this great trilogy (so far). Everything about it is fun and the story, even if not the most sophisticated, it still is a great one. One thing that I didn't like is that there where so many options, planets and missions that I just didn't care about and simply gave up on them and just focused on thr main plot.

If you recall the "Choose your own adventure" books, this has a very similar "feel." As K.G. put it, it's more of an interactive movie with FPS/RPG characteristics. First the good: The story line. The story line is captivating and intriguing. You're a commander of starship flying around the galaxy trying to expose a traitor but what you find is much more than that. There are tons of planets to explore, tons of missions and NPC's to talk to. You can also customize quite a bit about your character and even your squad mates armor and loadout. Everything from your characters appearance (face), to the armor you're wearing to what weapons you use an what upgrades they have installed. The graphics are pretty good for the most part. It's no Crysis (1), but this is a port after all so I doubt an Xbox or PS3 could handle anything more than this game puts out. This game is four years old now, and the sheer size of the universe that you're playing in,which is huge, it's bound to have some repetitive textures, especially on relatively insignificant planets. However, for the most part, they're still pretty good and the scenery is great.
The music is really good and draws you in to the story more as it's scripted to come on at specific times during action sequences and whatnot. And if you really want to know more about the game than is presented during gameplay, open up your codex and there's a lot of backstory. The bad: There really isn't much. One problem I've had with the game was the NPC's audio. During interaction with them, their speech would occasionally cut out (music and ambient sounds still play). Which kind of sucks for the story, however, enabling subtitles remedies that. Perhaps it was just my soundcard not playing well with the game (Creative X-Fi extreme music). However since Creative's last update for the card, I haven't come across this issue. Another issue I've found, however VERY infrequently, is getting stuck. There's an area that looks explorable, yet, you go there, and you get stuck. You have to reload the game. However, this is VERY infrequent. Other thoughts: The combat system is somewhat simplistic. It's semi FPSish except you can "pause" the action and command your squad to attack specific targets with specific attacks (weapons, biotic or tech attacks). Other than that, it's just like an FPS duck for cover, point and click, throw grenade, melee attack, etc. I don't see how people have issues with popping out of cover to shoot. It does it automatically, however, you have to be at the edge of what ever you're hiding behind for it to work. As far as I can tell, there aren't really any hitboxes in the game. Meaning headshots don't do any more or less damage than body or appendage hits. The next issue is the inventory system. It doesn't alphabetically organize and group together identical items. Kind of a pain. However, you can carry a whole helluva lot of stuff (150 items IIRC). For what it's worth, I haven't had this game crash ever. Not once. I've played it on an old 2.6GHz 939 dual core AMD system with 2 9600 GSO's, to an overclocked AM3 rig with 2 4870's, to an i7 (8core) with a 5870 using Windows XP and Windows 7 64 bit --runs flawlessly. People that have had the crashes most likely have a virus and don't know it, or their overclock is unstable. This is a PORTED game and as such, I've personally found ported games to crash frequently when your overclock is unstable. Final thoughts: All in all Mass Effect is a excellent game. Don't expect it to be like a traditional RPG --it's not. It's not an FPS either. However, the story is what makes this game. It's fresh, diverse, and totally engrossing. It gives you the freedom to act how you'd like and change the fate of the story. This game is the first of three, and what decisions you make in this game will affect some things in the second one, and from what I've read, will significantly impact the third. PS:The people that gave this game a 0 because of the DRM are idiots. That's NOT a review of the game. It's them whining and complaining about EA digital rights management (DRM). Should've bought it on Steam, and you can install it as many times as you like. PPS: Even if you do have the retail copy, and you use your 3 installs, simply call or get on live chat with EA support and they'll unblock it. And they're so good about it, if you ask for the Bring down the sky key they'll give it to you FOR FREE!

Mass Effect could also learn a lot of a game like Zelda Ocarina of Time for game pacing as there are large long sequences where the player finds themselves trapped in a non combat RPG environment for hours and hours rather then rewarding the player with new areas and action to break up the monotony. Otherwise decent story and characters diminished by lackluster combat, cookie cutter environments, cumbersome AI, and black and white morality system with virtually no impact on the characters or game outside of final decisions made at the end of the game.

Mass Effect has a cover system which at first leads you to believe you'll be needing to use it. Using cover is almost always a disadvantage since the terrible AI will almost always bum rush you in large numbers. Staying OUT of cover is an advantage in these situations as you have more camera control and are able to protect yourself from their suicide rushes. This reduces the vast majority of encounters to simply running around wildly. Additionally, while Mass Effect boasts a number of character classes to choose from, there is some overlap between abilities with certain classes, making the game seem more varied than it really is.

Environments, outside of the main story missions, are almost entirely identical. Mass Effect allows you to explore a wide variety of planets, but the terrain differs little and often only in color pallet. While exploring or doing side missions, you come across many structures with identical layout and rooms. Side missions are plentiful, but differ little in structure. Go here, kill this, find that, come home. There is little incentive to explore the galaxy and partake in content outside the main story line. The morality system, if you want to call it that, changes little beyond Shepard's responses. Acting like an avatar of virtue and justice versus an impatient killing machine carries no serious ramifications nor does it alter the course of the narrative in any meaningful way beyond a few encounters in the main storyline. Mass Effect's interface is another weak point. The menu system was obviously designed for consoles. No effort was made to create a more streamlined and user friendly interface for the PC port. When shopping, there is no way to compare what you currently have equipped with what you are looking to buy. The game requires you to exit the shop, open your inventory, memorize the stats of the item in question, talk to the shop owner again, click through his dialogue, open his inventory, and scroll through the list until you find the item you were trying to compare. The story is good but you'll get the feeling you've heard it somewhere before. The characters in your party are generally interesting each with their own unique backgrounds. Some of the most fun I had with this game was wandering around the ship and getting as much background info out of the various characters that I could, even if a couple of them are somewhat flat. The universe is well fleshed out and there is a lot of interesting glossary material to read through for those interested in lore.

BioWare games had for years a very similar narrative... an elite task force (Grey Wardens, Jedi, Spectres, Spirit Monks) recruits a new cadet, who will take on an epic journey to save the day from an apocalyptic evil, while recruiting colorfull characters to his team.

Although the gameplay mechanics are lesser to Mass Effect 2, I believe this game is the best version of the above told story... and therefore it is the best BioWare game... In MY opinion. The political plot, the immersive galaxy, the amazing characters, the beautiful locations and the uber epic finale make this game an unforgettable tale.

I have to mention one other aspect... this game has the most tasteful sex scene ever... and yes, I have played Heavy Rain, all Mass Effects, all Dragon Ages and all Witchers... (and all God of Wars... but these were not exactly what one would call tasteful :D ).

While there are many locations which are simply copy-pastes, and the Maco is not exactly the easiest to control vehicle I could not say, that these things bothered me (where as the copied locations in DA2 did bother me.. what can I say... opinions are subjective).

Besides the gameplay mechanics I have to mention the cut-scenes... which are AMAZING... on the level of the best sci-fi epics in movies. The music is stunning, the editing is perfect, the set pieces are beautiful and the camera angles are on spot.

Yes, I believe, that despite its flaws, that Mass Effect 1 is indeed the best BioWare game to date (followed very closely by Mass Effect 2)!

Nit-picks: interior cells are mostly copy-pasted for the many side missions, planet worlds could have been more lively. Other than at the Citadel you hardly meet people other than bad guys of one sort or another. The inventory is a mess, should have some sort of sorting option. You play as Commander Shepard, a space grunt with a few guns, some nifty tricks and an unwavering urge to curbstomp whatever so much looks at him funny. It's an over the shoulder shooter, in which a lion's share of the gameplay involves you blasting your way past waves of enemies to reach an exit to advance the plot. The ability to outfit my weapons to evolve them, which seemed like a good idea at first, ended up becoming a race to see how many damage modifiers I could staple onto my shotgun, regardless of heat generation. A shotgun with enough damage boosters pretty much one-shots 90% of the games enemies. The controls are tight and responsive, regardless of the class you pick, though it bears mentioning that some classes are much more overpowered compared to others. Playing as a Solider class fit my play style best and helped take some of the edge off of the game's difficulty. Shepard's squadmates, the heart and soul of the game, are engaging and can be surprisingly complex if you let them. The main plot is largely linear, with a few branches for you to pick and explore and seventy tons of side quests which serve, largely, as busy work. If you're as obsessive about having a clean mission log as I am, you'll spend hours on the side quests which serve no real purpose in this game, which makes for a very tedious experience. The release of Mass Effect 2 means that the decisions you make in this game carry over, whether through brief cameos or minor storyline changes. If you enjoy ME2, then playing through ME1 exactly how you want is the best way to get the character and events in the second game set up, which means playing all the side missions, and making all the "right" choices. Like most Bioware games, the Karma system is in full swing. You can play as a Renegade, which means you place your own needs, and the needs of Planet Earth, before anything else, or you can play as Paragon where you try to be the nice guy, rewarding people for their trust in you rather than betraying them, and save as many folks, alien or otherwise, as you can. For the more indecisive of us, playing as something the middle is also fully possible. Who you chose to kill and who you chose to save carries over into ME2, resulting in shifts in the storyline reflecting these changes. It's sad to say, but unless you play ME1 to completion and carry over your save file to the new game, your experience in ME2 will be slightly diminished, especially if you enjoy a Paragon route. The graphics were stunning for their time, though they may seem slightly dated by today's standards. I found the main storyline to be rather dull, until the last few sets of missions, where things ramped up resulting in a powerful and breathtaking climax that you take part in. While many folks seem to have taken a shine to ME1's music, most notably those guys from Penny-Arcade, I found the 1980's retro space synths to be dull and repetitive. Speaking of dull and repetitive, the side quests involve you visiting the same half dozen locations, shooting things, hopping back into your tank (called the Mako) and scaling a mountain to reach yet another location. The amount of time you spend in your tank scaling rocks is tiresome and takes away from all the space-badassery. Granted, most of these side quests can be skipped all together, they still could have done a better job varying locations up. If you've been to one transport/abandoned research facility/space mine you've been to them all. Lastly, there is the issue of the alleged romance scene. Let me spoil this for you: it's about as risque as an episode of Family Guy. Fifteen seconds of kissing with a single butt shot left me rather disappointed, considering all the hoopla that was churned up over it. Standing by itself, Mass Effect does many things right, but its repetitive nature dulls much of the excitement. Playing Mass Effect just to set up Mass Effect 2 just the way you want it is akin to pulling teeth. Mass Effect had several moments of clarity and an ending that was supremely satisfying, however the repetitive Mako missions, uninspired action sequences building up to the climax and impotent combat permeating the core the ME experience leaves Mass Effect wanting. Unless you dig the ME lore, you're interested in developing a world different from the default setting in ME2, or if spending hours in a tank trying to navigate impossible mountains is your cup of tea, then skip ME and go right for its superior younger brother: Mass Effect 2. Overall an amazing game with a rich and compelling story line. It truly feels like a movie that you are in complete control of. The controls take some getting used to but work very well. If you have not played Mass Effect 2 yet i thoroughly recommend you start with this and then move to 2, especially now that it is a budget title!

Computer owners are getting everything found in the Xbox 360 game, including achievements and online leaderboards, but with better visuals, smoother action, and a more streamlined interface. That the game rings up at a lower retail price and offers the first expansion pack as a free download is simply icing on the cake.
