It took time to understand the world and combat but when I passed the adaptation phase what I saw was incredible. The story was quite captivating and all RPG mechanics was well designed. I felt that I was a part of the world - an important one obviously - and enjoyed it.

Mass Effect is one of the best games that have ever been created. I played through this game possibly hundreds of times (I stopped counting) and I still enjoy every minute of it. If you are a sci-fi fan and can bear some kinda outdated (-ish) gameplay, definitely play this game.

BE WARNED! all three games have important story dlc's and may not be on the some pc online stores! make sure you get them.

The original Mass Effect is a fantastic game that sets up one of the greatest trilogies in science fiction: solid characters, a good story with interesting worlds, meaningful decisions with lasting impacts. If you are able to look past its limitations (the combat mechanics and repetitive side quests), there is a lot of fun to be had here.

This game takes forever to get going with a very long winded opening that feels like a walking simulator for the first few hours.

It just totally engrossed me on my first play through. Im probably in minority in Mass Effect fandom, but i do think this first game here is where Mass Effect is at its best, but only just, as Mass Effect 2 is an amazing game aswell.

While i think the overall game is truly amazing, i do want to get a a few gripes out of my way that i have with the game and which hold me to honesty in why i cannot give the game a 10/10. One of which is the AI, both enemy and companion. They tend to act erratic and even suicidal during combat. In some side missions, there are massive difficulty spikes, where the enemy AI simply swarms you and annihilates you, such as the the one on Earth's moon. On anything higher than the Normal difficulty setting, these missions are basically a masochist's treat. I can see some people rage quitting due to these and cursing the name of Mass Effect for the rest of their lives. Your companions tend to be a mixed bag, sometimes they can take out enemies, but many times they cant hit their targets. Even leveled up they cant take reasonable damage and get knocked out quickly under enemy fire, even Wrex, often leaving you alone to deal with groups of enemies.

The combat itself, while lacking polish, i actually quite like, i enjoy its RPGness, how each class requires a different approach to it, and i was disappointed how it was severly dumbed down in the sequel. Entering combat requires you to play smart and employ tactics, smartly use, combine your and your teams abilities and gear. Speaking of gear, i have another gripe to mention, and its the loot management. If youre the type of player who collects everything, inventory management will overwhelm you, as you'll be collecting duplicate items constantly and outdated items will take up a lot of space. On the other hand, if you like micro management, it can be kinda of fun, or even immersive, as i kinda of like, at the end of missions, to manage my and my crew's inventory, sell unneeded items and buy something new.

While the game can easily take over 35 hours to complete if you let your self loose in it, i do feel that the game could've had atleast 1 more major mission, because there arent that many of them frankly.

Although most side missions are a bit boring to complete, some of them have a back-story to it,best one being Shepard`s,depending on what back-story you chose for him/her.
Classes for the most part are enjoyable to play through, tho some of them requires extra knowledge or multiple playthroughs to understand them, like Infiltrator and Sentinel.
Now I have a AMD laptop and the performance for the most part was good, except in some cases where it was stuttering all over the place.
The gameplay is a bit clunky but playable.
Overall,if you want an RPG with an amazing universe and a beautiful set of characters which isn't too complicated to understand, this is a game you must play through,at least once.

Mass Effect revels in its superbly epic homage to classic sci-fi and fantasy fare, creating an incredibly endearing cast of characters that will seem familiar to anyone somewhat versed in the genre. It's a good thing the characters are good, too, because most of this game involves you (Commander Shepherd) talking to them.

The Commander Shepherd you decide to be over the course of the game has long-lasting and potentially universe-changing consequences, and these consequences extend into the sequels of the series, should you choose to import your character (which you should absolutely do). This sense of consequence creates an immersion that few games even come close to.

The FPS gameplay is solid, but by itself a little uninspiring. However, the character classes and their associated skills are what really make the gameplay of Mass Effect shine. You can play as the typical but somewhat dull run-and-gun class, but you can also play as a support class that can levitate and throw enemies, as well as overloading their shields. You can even play as a character that has the ability to hack robotic enemies and make them attack their own cronies. The classes are fairly distinct and they require different approaches to be successful.

In addition to the skills, the game has a good number of weapons at different levels that can be upgraded for you and you are squadmates. People that don't care much for RPG-style upgrading may find this a bit tedious (I did), but it definitely adds variety to the gameplay.

As far as how the game looks and sounds, it's still an awe to look at after all these years. The film grain and synth soundtrack give the game a sense of timelessness, and detract from the outdated textures. The character models are pretty to look at (especially the armor), and the environments are varied enough to keep things fresh (especially towards the end of the game). The voice acting is fantastic.

After I finished Mass Effect, I was pretty blown away from the entire experience, and felt even more rewarded that Commander Shepherd's legacy would live on for the second game. The fact that I pondered over the decisions I had made throughout the game for days afterward is a testament to the immersion of this sci-fi marvel..

Still holds up fairly decent in 2019. I would recommend graphical mods on PC of course to give it a little extra polish. However even though the combat is still a bit clunky it doesn't detract from what makes Mass Effect great which is the story, lore, and of course the characters.

Mass Effect was a great game when it released in 2007 (2008 on PC), and it's still a great game 12 years later.

What i didn't like are the guns and the combat mechanism. The guns are always the same and cannot be changed. Can be upgraded during the game, but basically are always the same type. Also going around with the tank is not so nice. In some worlds is very difficult to drive and the tank seems jump like a rabbit. But the game is very long, and i think you need to play it before to play the other 2 games of the series, to better understand, and above all, appreciate the story behind. So the plot and the story save the vote to not go below 8, to anyway, a great gaming Trilogy. I think that any lover of space and sci-phi, should play this trilogy.

After you actually play it though, the thought you typically get is: "What sort of masterpieces the other games are if THIS is considered the weakest entry in the series?" Yes, by many this is considered the weakest entry, although there is a small group of people who think it is the best (as with any game in any franchise).
About the good parts first. This the most RPGish game in the trilogy. Here you actually had to choose which weapon skills to max out, or try to max protection. If you want to be able to diplomatically solve various situations you have to level persuasion for good guys and frightening for bad guys. By the max level you will have only about a half of it covered. Leveling-up really matters here.
The plot is another thing that makes the game shine. If you look at plainly the main plot, it might be the best in the trilogy. The way of introducing the whole universe to the player is introduced is executed very well. The side quests aren't exactly shiny, but decent.
The graphics is a different topic. At times you will be feeling like you are playing a 2010 game.
One of the main problems of the game was combat, which was the primary reason for people not to like this game as much as the following ones. It is sort of weird, but lets not forget that this is Bioware's first attempt at creating an action combat system. A good classic RPG with fine action combat is rear thing itself.
There were other problems, like a rover that didn't seem to know of physics laws, most planets were just squares with pretty much same terrains and a little bit different textures. Yet none of them can make such a great game bad. It is totally worth trying, and if you are looking to get into Mass Effect franchise, do not skip the first game.

+Exploring space is fun and the descriptions and details of planets is well made.
+Ordering characters to use their powers is quick and simple and can lead to some cool combos.

    Cons:
-Combat feels bland and lacks impact.
-On higher difficulties you can't always tell you're being hit until you die.
-Controls can feel clunky especially when moving in and out of cover.
-Animations are bad even for it's time.
-Sound quality for everything other than voices is pretty mediocre
    -Lack of anti aliasing

Mass Effect is a badly aged but fun TPS RPG with a great story, great characters and interesting world
While it is a Third Person Shooter, It's more of an RPG before it's a Third Person Shooter. On a side note, I really wish we could have more orders for party members.

    Pros:
-The atmosphere and the world building are top notch. Mass Effect works perfectly in establishing it's universe, the lore, the different species and the inevitable Armageddon coming your way to destroy us all. Not at any point was i bored or disinterested. Hell even some of the more fetch based sidequests were very interesting

-The story is phenomenal. People told me about how great the story in this franchise is and they weren't lying. Every decision you make can go back to bite you in the ass or even benefit you if you know what you're doing (Until Mass Effect 3 but we'll get to that). The voice acting is alos great for the most part

    Cons:
-Now as much as i would love to say that Mass Effect one is a phenomenal game, it isn't. For one, the combat. It's awful. Like, really **** bad. The controls are slippery, using energy instead of ammo is pointless and cumbersome and the cover system is bar none the worst in the entire franchise.
-The love interests. As i kept playing through the Mass Effect games i found out how important the love interests were. And Mass Effect 1's love interests aren't that great. There's Liara who's just amazing and then there's the boring space racist Ashley and the boring boring bucket of bore Kaidan. Seriously what do some of the fans see in Kaidan. He's so boring you might as well be romancing a stick with a gun

In conclusion, all though flawed, Mass Effect 1 is a good start to what would become a great franchise

However, there are some points that displeased me during my playthrough (maybe for some of them the reason is because I played this game recently and was disturbed by things that were considered good when the game was out) :

    - The side quests were really boring, most of the time they consist in exploring an almost empty planet then clearing a building which often looks like the one you cleared for the previous mission.

    - As I just said, the planets you will explore for the side quests are empty except for some resources and a building filled with enemies. This becomes quite repetitive after visiting some planets and makes exploration boring.

    - I personally disliked the fighting system with heating and weapon precision acquired through skill points, I found it very frustrating to wait until my weapon cooled to keep fighting.

Nevertheless, I would still recommend to play the game for its main story and its character design which are his strong points.

4 - Shepard stops aiming, puts his gun down, turns his back to the wall, and leaves his head completely exposed to enemy fire.
5 - Shepard dies from a shot to the back of the head.
6 - Reload the game and experience the exact same thing on a different wall or a different piece of furniture.

If Bioware wanted the game to be impossibly difficult, why didn't they just make the enemies harder to hit? Or make them do more damage? Giving me good equipment but terrible controls is probably the worst design choice possible. Mass Effect easily rivals the NES Castlevania games for worst controls in video game history.

I should have known something was screwy when I noticed options for auto aim in a PC game. That's when the developers know the game is completely broken. They know the game hates you and doesn't want you to aim at anything, so they try to balance it out by adding auto aim instead of just fixing the damn controls.

-There is a slowness that pervades this game. This is definitely in part due to the amazing amount you can learn about everything through dialogue and the environment but once you get past the sheen of a new universe this feel starts of grate on you a bit.
-Autosave is incredibly unintuitive and nearly nonexistent. It requires you to "be out of combat" in order to manual save but sometimes combat is a reference to an area instead of a state so you get stuck and possibly die. This would not be so bad if there was not this "slowness" that I mentioned before but sometimes you will get one shot and have to start off 10 minutes back. (This is most common on the vehicle missions) Obviously it is not too bad or I would have quit but this is just a warning for those who are too used to the current way games save.

The highlights of the game are the dialog, story and characters and the combat can take a bit to get used to but is very well implemented.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Edit: Due to BioWare's recent middle finger to the fanbase, announcing it's focus on books and multiplayer and telling the people who wanted single-player DLC and content in Mass Effect: Andromeda to **** off, I will be changing all scores for my ME series reviews to 0.

Mass Effect is the beginning of the original Mass Effect Trilogy (1/2/3). A science fiction third-person shooter/RPG, our journey takes place in the relatively distant future of 2183. You are Commander Shepard, an enlisted member of the Systems Alliance, Humanity's face to the Galactic community, who becomes the very first human Council Spectre, the elite of the elite, who answer to nothing but the Council, the ruling committee made up by 1 representative of the 3 major species of the Milky Way, The Turians, Asari, and Salarians.

You start out with character creation, choosing your class, personal history and military service record, and customizing your face down to any scars you'd like. You also gain access to a repertoire of weaponry and armor that you can customize, with things like First-Aid systems in armor to slowly regenerate HP to specialized rounds that will rip through Organic targets for weaponry. On top of all this, each class comes with an expansive talent tree that you can fill out however you please. My only gripes with this gem are twofold. A) The inventory. It starts off slow, with maybe an item or two, and occasionally you'll get some after killing things, but as the game progresses, it begins a lootstorm of annoying proportions, to the point where I just mod my game to unlimited inventory and omnigel, and sell/destroy anything I don't need. B) The Talent Tree, while good, is disproportionately big to the amount of points you actually get without aggressive sidequesting.

The game itself opens up after this to reveal a huge world for the player to explore, and codex entries to fill out even the seemingly unimportant bits in the background, even to how the weapons work. Worlds to explore in the Mako (a ground vehicle with a drunken rhino somewhere in its family tree, given how it handles) and side missions taking you from planets where you get ambushed by giant, angry space worms, to stations to rescue a man from extremists.

Throughout your journey, you will meet people and recruit squad members to fight by your side, through thick and thin. An Asari politician who hires you and tricks you into killing her pirate sister, and a Krogan mercenary you recruit who also wants the head of someone you're after are just two examples of the unique people you will encounter, not to mention the romance you can build by conversing with squad mates in between missions.

You also need to be conscious of your choices, as they can have minor repercussions or massive ones down the line, and affecting your Paragon and Renegade scores, to shamelessly steal two lines from Mass Effect 2's loading screens, lead to you either becoming the ultimate hero, or the ultimate badass. Will you choose to save the mind controlled innocents of Zhu's Hope, or try to save time, gun them down, and hope for the best after you kill the one controlling them?

Last we touch on the Music. While a fair bit of it is synthetic, to keep with the futuristic tone, doesn't lessen any impact of anything. From the background music as you fight long and hard against the forces of Saren, to the epic orchestral tracks at the end, as the Normandy flies off into the cosmic Horizon to fight forward, it does amazing work at adding to the already deep world you fight in.

An honorable mention purely because it's one of my favorite things in video games, the Save import. When you have concluded your Journey and move onto Mass Effect 2, you can use the config tool to copy your saves over to the ME2 directory, where you can import your Shepard into 2, then onto 3 later. Including all your choices, and the consequences.

tl;dr - Mass Effect is the beginning of a trilogy that truly lives up to the word "Epic" with music to match the futuristic tones, beautiful locations and memorable people each with a personality and history of their own, despite iffy inventory management and talent tree's you could choke an elephant with.

+ Great story. As the commander of a stealth frigate, stop a threat to the galaxy that only a few believe actually exists. Travel the galaxy in search of proof, encounter strange species and abandoned settlements, and discover the secrets of a lost civilization.
+ Great characters. From the stern Turian, Garrus, to the sympathetic blue Asari, Liara, to your ship’s crew (doctor, pilot, navigator), these are some of the best characters to come from BioWare.
+ A fully realized and crafted lore. There is a ton of backstory behind every structure and every species.
+ Many planets to explore. Explore a star system in the hopes of finding a planet to land upon and scour for resources, artifacts, pirates, slave traders, or anomalies.
+ Choices that matter. You’ll have to make some life-or-death choices (some of which can actually result in death of others). It is even possible to avoid one particular boss-fight via the correct conversation choices.
+ Great soundtrack. A synth-heavy approach melded with orchestral bits.
+ Graphics + facial animations are still superb. Yes, it’s an older game now. It’s a bit low-res and faces are often stiff. Mass Effect was ground-breaking at the time it launched (2007), and now, ten years later, it’s still better than many new games. (There is an HD texture mod which brings the textures up to date.)

+/- Sparsely populated levels. A sign of when it was made, so not a negative, but sometimes the levels feel a bit empty.
+/- Like Dragon Age (another BioWare franchise), there is a lot of conversation – easily a third of the game. I like it, and it’s easy to skip through if you don’t, but it is everywhere.
+/- Combat tries to combine tactical and shooter elements (complete with tactical pause menu), and while successful, isn’t always fun. All guns have unlimited ammo. Enemy snipers can be one-shot game-overs.
+/- The DLC is not included in the Steam download, but is available from EA for free.
+/- There is a lot of hate for the Mako rover, which is used to drive around and explore planets. It’s fine, it works. It can get a little freaky with gravity, though…
+/- Capped at 62fps. This can be unlocked in a config file.
+/- The highest resolution I’ve played at (without altering config files) is 1440p. The Unreal 3 engine can handle 4k, but I haven’t tried running Mass Effect at 4k and have no idea if it would work without trouble.

    - If you were hoping for space combat, sorry, there is none. Any space combat occurs in cutscenes.
    - Some cringe-y dialogue. Despite the many AAA aspects of Mass Effect, sometimes the dialogue cheapens it to B-movie levels.
    - After the tutorial level, the game’s pace slows to a crawl as we’re left running around a station, completing RPG-style missions before heading back out into space. It’s an error in tempo that can (and has) caused many people trying Mass Effect for the first time to lose interest.
    - Horrible inventory management. You have a list of stuff that is grouped by level. And… that’s it.
    - Too much loot. Not as much of an issue if the inventory were easy to manage. There is lootable stuff around almost every corner.
    - Too easy to earn money. Half-way through, you’ll have a million credits from selling loot. Not impossible to have 10 times that by the end of the game.
    - Graphical issues on AMD cpus. Yes, cpus, not graphics cards, are the cause of the problem. Affected are any Bulldozer or Athlon chips. Phenoms are fine. Haven’t heard if the problem persists on Ryzen. It wasn’t until recently that I experienced the game with all shadows working correctly (switched to Intel).
    - Startup issues. Usually setting the compatibility mode to Windows XP gets the game to start.

Issues aside, Mass Effect is still a good RPG, cursed with some odd controls and combat, but blessed with a great story and characters. That decisions made in this game can carry forward to Mass Effect 2 (and 3) via save imports is just the icing on this action-space-drama cake. An easy game to recommend, even now, ten years after its release.

Visually it's a mixed bag, with some textures and models looking damn good for the time and others looking really bad, quite an inconsistent presentation overall I'd say. The audio was good, some great music coupled with solid voice acting for the most part, there were some really noticeable poor jobs though, male Shepard was so bad I had to switch to female, and I also thought Kaidan Alenko was poorly voiced. Gameplay was OK but I'd say this is where most of the issues were, the biggest being the woeful AI, enemies would often stand in the open not firing or hide behind cover permanently, never making an attempt to attack or find a better position, your own squad would constantly try to shoot hidden enemies through walls and pillars etc, it was just poor in every way. Another sore spot was the Mako, driving that thing was not fun at all because it handled so poorly, you'd hit a pebble in the road and end up doing a 4 flip somersault, I really hope this is tightened up in the next game. Those were the biggest gameplay issues but I also feel the cover system could be better, it got me killed a couple of times and I wasn't a fan of the planet map system, it felt slow and clunky navigate. The last issue I had was the head bob/camera shake when sprinting, it actually made me feel nauseous so I spent most of the game jogging instead.

The story is a huge part of any RPG and it was good, well told and interesting and I felt it really picked up in the last couple of hours, the ending was satisfying and I even got some chills from the final scenes. I like how there were some tough decisions throughout the game that had a major impact on the story. I feel they ended the first game well and it makes me want to jump straight into the sequel.

Overall a solid first entry with plenty of room for improvement, Mass Effect 2 is downloading now and I'll get into it very soon, I'm looking forward to seeing the improvements they made, it's not often you get to try the sequel straight after the original so the changes/fixes should be very apparent.

Well, if we're talking about game developers' stagnation and degeneration, then yes, it's the most classic example.
I'm fine with characters although BioWare never stopped to exploit same archetypes over and over again, I like how the universe is pretty elaborate and well-written. Graphics looks good even years later after release. What a wonderful foundation for a great game. But the GAME is bad. This scrappy incoherent mix of Gears of War-like shooting range arcade and rudimentary RPG elements is really unpleasant to play. BioWare have not only abandoned any attempts to come up with interesting and exciting gameplay mechanics, they also did not bother themselves polishing it. Abilities are all same and boring, guns' variativity is depressing (especially for biotics who are doomed to carry only a pistol for the entire game), teammates barely affect the fight, all side quests (outside The Citadel and DLC) are just boring grindfest of same outposts on same lifeless planets. Equipment and inventory are rather obstacle than something adding any gameplay depth, stats and skills are just atavisms from BioWare's RPG developer's legacy. So-called «choices» finally decayed to just «always click red vs always click blue». It's not like good vs edgy answers in dialogues is a big issue for me, the real issue is that at some point BioWare just stopped caring about anything else and started to forcefully shove these «HARD MORAL CHOICES WITH CONSEQUENCES» down player's throat. This worked pretty well in KotOR due to dualistic nature of The Force in SW universe, this worked fine in Jade Empire because it was well-incorporated into the lore inspired by eastern culture and philosophy. The only purpose «CHOICES» serve in ME is to convince players that their choice WILL have real consequences somewhere in further games. Bioware forced people to invest in their game, waste their time on side quests grinding, help crew members with their daddy issues, choose your allegiance and so and so on just because this SHOULD pay off somewhere in the future when the trilogy is over. But they lied. They didn't manage to do that and now I doubt that they even had any plans to. Same goes for story. This game presents itself as a story-based one but it actually doesn't even have a story to offer you. Only promises.

2 out of 7: into the trash it goes.

Before that game, I wasn't interesting at all at playing Sci-Fi games because I found them too boring, even though I really like Sci-Fi movies. This game changed my perspective about games, gave me unforgettable experiences and initiated me into the world of Mass Effect. I will continue the series until the end to find out everything about this magnificent world.

Not so interesting as next parts of Mass Effect but it is beginning of great universe. Very boring and monotonous side missions, dead planets and bland characters. Nevertheless, a strong storyline and good graphics, music, and good lore doing their job

All with well written back stories and cultures. Although ME takes many of it's ideas from other Scifi stories, it successfully creates it's own unique world, story, and characters. You see through the eye of Commander Shepard, a character and main protagonist with an already established reputation and backstory. As Commander Shepard, you experience the world of Mass Effect both in the story and interactions with characters. The characters are so fleshed out with their facial expressions, emotions, their own unique personalities, and backstories that they will not only bond with Shepard, but they will bond with the player as well. Top that with a good story and a plot twist, Mass Effect will not only immerse the player into the game's story, but it undoubtedly creates a life-like and believable world that's bigger than the game itself. The only drawbacks to an almost perfect game is in it's bugs, glitchy graphics, and combat system. However, the characters, story, and, world outshine Mass Effect's set backs and contribute to it's greatness! 9/10 Expand

    Pros:
    -El worldbuilding es impresionante.
-El desarrollo de personajes y su profundidad.
    -El argumento bien trabajado.

    Contras:
-El sistema de combate sin pulir.
    -La exploración vacía.
    -Los bugs.

And it's a streamlined and boring staple at that. I'll allow myself a small rant on ME in general, after seeing what potential Bioware has wasted (played through both Bioware classics and the new, ♥♥♥♥♥♥ games - they don't compare in quality, the new ones are frankly an insult to a player of expectations over fetch-quests and xeno-sex).

ME takes away most all player agency, just letting the player click on inconsequential stuff and run through halls, doing tedious tasks, only to shoehorn in some superficial sex scenes with space jocks -and cheerleaders. Characters are not smart (even "scientists" are just appropriated and shallow image of the real thing here, they actually make no sense at all), the plot is not at all plausible nor involving, making the whole thing not believable in any way.

No need to use logic by the user or find meaning in anything, just need to run through corridors and fantasize over appropriated alien species, buff Mexicans etc. No limited resources, or risk, everything is handed to the player for visual stimuli and the comfort of clicking mindlessly. As long as the player can envision themselves as a stupid yet happy and successful (well-endowed) space-Jesus wannabe without whom everything would be annihilated and whom everyone needs and loves.

Truth be told, that's the gist of the ME series. Shame they destroyed DA so easily after Origins, just to make all their games "like ME". I'd be surprised if anything half-decent comes from EAoware in the future. Even moreso because ME did not appeal to anyone as a shooter, nor did DA2 or DAI appeal in its gameplay (whilst DA:O did so for many).

Go play DA:O or the Witcher series instead. Those are games made out of love, not for easy money in the short term granted by appeal to some low low denominators.

Traditional scoring systems fail here. The game watered down RPGs and expectations for them in general.

Make it rather a negative five.
Yet, for many people overall liking it, femshep being decent (though I'd much prefer if we'd play our own story, not hers, via a silent protag whose lines we can actually choose), I will compromise for a 3. : )

It is a decent even if overdramatized and unoriginal space opera. And more importantly, an original space dating sim. : )

I personally loved the combat that made you focus more on leveling up the player according to your own style. But the BEST bit about mass effect is Of course its incredible stroyline. You can determine the fate of this epic by choosing different dialogue options. I will admit that this game gave me goosebumps numerous times during my play-through. By the time I finished the game(12 hrs in 2 days) I felt like I had finished an incredible movie. This game has the stroyline that puts most JRPGs to shame. Mass Effect is a solid dungeon crawler with a good story but not without fault. The biggest issue is the uneven quests and side-quests. The search quests are totally uninspired. There is no great revelation or debriefing or anything. You get money and XP and be happy.
The driving is crazy. I wish for a little less 80% hills and more rolling terrain. Those hills make the rather mundane task of driving in circles to find hidden stuff a time sink.
The environments are nice, thou I wish for a little variance on the mine and ship interior design. All the side-quest mines and ships are the same.
The story is pretty good and the twists and turns are nice. I found the Indoctrination to be a very cheap way to depict character motives. The writer can turn any character anytime without a good background explanation. He was indoctrinated, live with it. Also, some conversations are way beyond the suspension of disbelief. Like when a total drug addicts walks up to you and ask to get some stuff for him, in 3 conversation choices, you make him realize the seriousness of the issue so he goes to rehab. What? Or in the hijack situation, you take down the 90% of the terrorist team. You encounter the leader, pointing a pistol to the head of the hostage, who tortured them for years. The leader is poised with revenge and I suppose, infuriated by the death of his team, yet in 4 conversation choices, he will surrender and let his former tormentor walk free.
The loot frequency is out of the world. I collected about 50 items per mission. I finished the game with maxed out money and gel. In this case, the less would be more.
The characters are well developed and they mostly feel real and can crack some good one liners once in a while.
All in all, it is a good game, worth playing, However, despite what others say, the replay value is low.Yes, you can play as good gut or as a massive a**. It will generate a somewhat different experience and plot line. However, why you would want to follow the adventures of a protagonist, who you can't stand because he is too good or too bad for you? Forcing yourself to play through as Paragon and Renegade will feel exactly that. Forced.

The choices lead to soul searching and the combat interface was pretty good. If it didn't have the stupid rover I would have loved every part of it.
