This game was a total let down. I bought the supposed Premium pack with all the unlocked characters but got nothing. Response from support was the site is still in development. Would like my back at this point in time.

I suppose the only upside is that it's free, so that when you figure out how boring and lifeless this game is, you won't have wasted anything other than the 11gb download.

Good clean graphics but really sub par by today standards in both graphics and features. Surely play it if you are a marvel fan

I have a higher end gaming system, play multiple MMOs and have over 200 games on Steam that not share the baffling performance issues that this game has even after "Major performance increases". I drop to 2-3 fps in busier zones constantly making the game unplayable. Their patches add more costumes for sale and heroes on top of a system that is completely broken due to the defense mechanic being completely inadequate for any character. Many classes have fundamental issues like low spirit, spirit consumption so their talent builds are forced to invest in them. Itemization is meant to fill holes in these same weaknesses which leaves you with a character that's already half decided for you yet gives you this illusion of "full customization". Spirit the main resource works against in this game because the regen mechanic simply punishes you for using it. You will inevitably run out and use weak and boring basic powers while it slowly refills or if you are lucky enough to play a class that has a strong basic attack you will just spend your spirit on micromanaging boring aspects and rarely spend spirit. Either way that's just a boring play style in a genre that has always prided itself on fast and frantic gameplay.

Leveling is completely boring because the game changes it's idea on how you are supposed to level every week. In the end it's always running the same map over and over, and not really in the same rewarding sense of doing "boss runs" in other games because the itemization is just flat boring. They added a higher tier of gear called "cosmics" but it's simply the same drab gear with 1 skills and a random effect that really only disjoints the character's aesthetics even further by summoning demons randomly or a random damage proc. These are cool, but it doesn't make sense when the game leaves me with a less than adequate way of developing my character for survival or functionality and just adds to this to an already random chance system of progression. The maps are just completely boring and do not have very many encounters and the bosses are generally cannon fodder with unnecessary health pools. In the larger zones there are many enemies and bosses spawning, but the chaos really serves no purpose other than walking around killing things. Even though there are other people around you, everyone is generally unorganized because the goals of the zones are not very clear other "do what you want". I suppose that's enough for an ARPG fan and I'd rather enjoy this, but it's impossible when you simply cannot keep a stable frame rate.

Recently I had to download a patch 3 times. 5 gigs per download because they issued a patch, rolled it back, then repatched it again and forced the client to download all of this. The game is only 12 gigs total, so I spent over 36 hours and 3 days simply downloading before I could even play the game in any shape or form. Not everyone has an amazing internet connection.

The forum community has now devolved into nothing but over-supportive people that trash complaints about all of these things at the mere mention of any type of negativity towards the game or it's developers, so issues that have persisted since the game has launched are still there.

The only saving grace for the game is they switched to a system where you can earn your characters simply by playing... this really doesn't give a free pass for the rest of the game being completely average. This is not the replacement for Diablo 2. This isn't even the replacement for Torchlight II. Path of Exile and even Diablo 3 offer better and less frustrating experiences despite their issues. The sad thing is this game has better ideas and a better foundation, but unfortunately the Marvel license and usage of it to create the games "classes" will only create bottlenecked classes that are glued to very specific ideas and they will also have to operate with the restrictive mechanics the gameplay design has placed on them. The result is just simply disappointing and I hoped for better, but I no longer have the patience to enjoy it and I will never recommend this over other ARPGS for it is barely average.

This game resemble Diablo so much (except for the Superheroes lineup) that it is somewhat uninspiring to play.
Graphics are average and control is very clumsy and not up to par with many current ARPGs.
I wouldn't spend money on this game even though i love Marvel.

Marvel Heroes isn't interesting game. One of few good things are that it's free. And that heroes are interesting and have nicely done abilities. And story isn't always so boring. And those are the good things.

Well bad things? Well for start, if you didn't buy any hero pack, you have to pay 10-20 for one hero. Plus another for the costume. So like 40 for Iron Man and 1 of his costume.

Loot isn't interesting. Level-up-ing abilities are boring. Starting heroes are boring and getting a hero for loot is extremely rare. I go Thing. And haven't got after that. And there's no way to get those in-game money. You have to pay for it or wait for ultra-rare loot. And you're not gonna play for that long. Story is almost always boring. It tries to have Marvel Ultimate Alliance's story but it don't have. Controls aren't so good.

So it's worth trying if you're Marvel fan. It's free game.

Summary: If you like Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, go play it again; its been years, you'll probably have fun. This game is a very pale shadow of that one and brings nothing new to the table.

This game is a buggy Diablo clone and proud of it. Game creation seems to have followed these steps:
Step 1: Make a Diablo-clone engine; skimp on QA; nobody will care if the game just doesn't run or you have serious problems, its free-to-play.
Step 2: Populate it with the story and some of the characters from the 7-year-old Ultimate Alliance game.
    Step 3: Release.

    Where are the issues?
In step 1, they made a decent-looking engine and packaged it with a terrible installer; patching the game has on multiple occasions caused it to stop working, completely aside from the occasional server outages, leading to a frustrating uninstall/redownload/reinstall cycle that Steam users can avoid some but not all of. This points to a lack of a decent QA department; or more likely a lack of paying attention to said department; and/or mediocre programming.

Step 2 is the more frustrating part, however. This game's plot reads very much like the plot of ultimate alliance. In fact: "Doctor Doom has a scheme involving gathering villainous allies and artifacts so that he can have divine levels of power and reshape the world in his own image; a variety of Marvel-universe heroes combine to stop him." is the plot for both games. While Ultimate Alliance took you underwater, to the far reaches of space, to demon hellscapes, cities, and all sorts, Marvel Heroes takes you to.. mostly boring earth cities and wilderness, along with places you already saw in Ultimate Alliance.

    If you think I'm making alot of comparisons between the games, there's a good reason;
Ultimate Alliance let you play as the whole roster for one price, was an action-oriented game you could play offline, local co-op, or online with friends, featured plenty of power customization, various costumes, and even some item collection, had jumping, picking and tossing items, and so forth.
Marvel Heroes is... a 2D version of ultimate alliance with no initial cost and a much higher eventual one if you want to unlock many heroes. The gameplay is incredibly similar with the only truly noticable difference being the tedious effort of collecting and managing identical-looking pieces of gear; items that don't even impact character appearance but just background stats.

Do not play this game. Do not give these people your time or your money. For the price of the Iron Man and Spiderman unlocks for this game, you can have Ultimate Alliance in one of its many versions shipped to you, and play the same story, on much more interesting locations, with a more diverse cast of characters, still play it with your friends as a team, and not worry about the incompetent programmers at Gazillion.

This game has a lot of potential, but I'm afraid that it won't get there, and will become a sinkhole, if it isn't nurtured right.

I didn't know about this game until about a week before release, I didn't try the beta. I am an avid fan of the playstyle and game type, however. This game is most comparable to Diablo or Torchlight, but it lacks in many places where those games flourish.

Firstly, my premier gripe is the MMO style location setup. I simply do not need 50 people in my home base with me while I am trying to shop. It became extremely laggy in these times, and made shopping and stashing tedious and irritating. A F2P that requires a better system than mine to be playable doesn't seem to be a very good premise. This is amplified in the field where you are fighting. On one hand it is good that the creatures respawn and bosses can be fought with an alternating group; on the other hand it is extremely laggy and farming is very simply by simply standing near where a boss will respawn. I sense an easy way to abuse.

One of my favourite things about this style of game is the customization and building of a character. There is a very limited amount of skills that are selectable for the characters, and despite their being so many characters, it is still incredibly dull where character building is concerned. I don't want to have to pay money to get a new experience with a new character every month. I would prefer to build and rebuild my own character in an ever expanding myriad of ways.

I don't know much about the Marvel Universe that the normal person isn't already aware of. The costumes may be very interesting for reasons I don't know; but visually and aesthetically, they are boring. They require a level of personal attachment to a particular version of a very particular super hero. This is great for the players who want to pretend to be a very specific super hero that someone else made up. I was hoping for more customization with my own hero, and their looks, and hoping to make a character mine; not play the character designed by someone else.

A good game for a super fan. But not a game played by gamers in this genre. It is very much a niche idea designed for a particular type of person. Those people, however, will have a great time.

The biggest issue for me is character customization. In an MMO, we don't want to all look the same. Outside paying extra bucks for a different outfit, everyone seems the same. Letting us use the superheroes as a powers template while letting us look different would have been idea. Add the ability to change colors and you have something better. I know there are those the WANT to play as Hulk or Hawkeye or whoever... that would be fine in a single player game... this is an MMO.

Gameplay is the next big thing... yes it is similar to diablo... but been there, done that. The lack of depth of the level design and a poor storyline makes the gameplay a drag. If they were going to steal the diablo design, I wish they would have stolen some of the elegant levels and inventive stories.

Greed... right... I get that it is free. But nickle and diming us to death is worse than a subscription. I am sure it is a tough time to balance between gameplay and making money, but here they went too far for the greed.

Good news is that you can try this for free and all you are wasting is your time. That is the only thing I can say positive about the game. Frankly, even that is too expensive.

The characters and power are on point, exciting moves & appropriate, although they really aren't that many. The issue with this game is that it was specifically made exploit F2P philosophy. It really forces you to buy marvel characters, because no one wants to play as daredevil(storm, hawkeye, thing) for 20+ while hulk and more popular smash on everything. They purposely chose to start you with the most unpopular characters to irritate the player. Drop rate for heroes is something like .00005%. I really don't mind forking up money for F2P games, but in this case it's really too contrived and the game isn't even original.

The game is very big, recycles maps and sucks at giving you direction. The lack of style and attention to detail and love makes the gaming experience very hollow and suspicious. The developers didn't seem to have gamer's in mind. I understand profit is necessary, but come on. It feel like a bad Diablo slapped with marvel brand. It worked I played, but 12 hrs in I don't see myself see myself playing this in the future.

That right there is very commendable. When i first started the game i liked it a lot but it had some issues. Admittedly this kind of gameplay has been done many times before ever since the Diablo series made it popular, but the fact that you get to play as your favorite Marvel super-heroes keeps it entertaining. The game can get really laggy at times which is sad because when things are running smoothly the character animations look fantastic. It's got a pretty lengthy campaign which mainly focuses on taking you to different locations set in the Marvel universe to fight super villains all while sporting a poorly written plot. The endgame content focuses more on daily challenges and the PVP arena. It feels sort of relaxing to reach the endgame and spend the rest of your time trying to max out your character. At any time you can play as a different super hero, which you can either pay real money for or hope to get in a loot drop, and start back from scratch. Admittedly the Marvel theme helps this game a lot. Without it this would just be another generic brawler. But the fact that it uses famous organizations, locations, and characters from the Marvel universe will keep any Marvel fan invested in it. It being free-to-play also cushions the blow. So if you're a fan of Marvel's proud history you owe it to yourself to check out this free-to-play gem. Just keep in mind it has got some light issues. Expand

You can attain every single thing in the game just by playing a reasonable amount (and that is a very conservative statement). So pick up the game. Don't listen to the negative Nancies! Expand

In terms of game play, it's an ARPG with some elements of MMO, it's pretty fun to play as a hero you like, but waiting to get my favorite char with the splinter system they are implementing. I do mostly limbo for end game which is slightly repetitive but it all depends on what you do, it doesn't have to be repetitive. You can switch from green, red, blue, purple flavors, I happen to like purple the best so doing that mostly.

I'd give the game a 7.5 currently, and an additional 0.5 for what's in the works for coming patches (revamp limbo) for the total of 8.0

What a frackin difference 6 weeks makes. Since launch we have seen two sales, two xp/item find weekends (The second of which is going on as we speak 7-19-2013), serious patches that buff characters instead of nerfing them, two patches to address defense, a major percentage based defense fix incoming, xp buffs, a new tier of items to hunt (Cosmic Items), an increase in hero drop rates, and a permanent price cut to all items in the store. Ladies and Gentlemen, this is not the Marvel Heroes you knew at launch.

To put it in perspective for all of us ARPG gamers, Gazillion Entertainment has made more fundamental changes to Marvel Heroes in 6 weeks than Blizzard made to Diablo 3 in over a year. Is Marvel Heroes perfect? Absolutely not, but when the average (non-streamer/non-media) gamer can sit down at their PC, and have a conversation with the lead developer about the state of the game and where it is headed, then you better be frackin sure that the game is headed that way. I don’t room to mention all the awesome they are putting into this game, but I need to add that itemization is not only be worked on, but it is a top priority for this team. That other game still hasn’t fixed itemization, and has stated they will not have it implemented until 2014.

I have not seen a single negative review that actually played through the entire game and gave it a fair shake. Almost every review says something so stupid that it completely outs the fact they didn’t bother playing it. Things like “The inventory is so small and I don’t have a portal to go back to town!”. Really? You didn’t even bother playing long enough to discover the body slider? I mean, I know it’s a new idea on portals…even though Diablo 3 has been using this system since it launched… and it’s available to you from level 1.

So, after all of this gushing over the game let me tell you what I don’t like about it. My biggest complaint has to be optimization. The game does not run well on mid-range systems, and the loading times are terrible even on an SSD

Also, patch times can be long (Yet lately they have been better, and coming in at under 3 hours downtime). In a world where studios like Grinding Gear Games and ArenaNet are cranking out very substantial patches (Big in content, yet tiny in actual byte size) by giving a 10 minute warning, and patching the game in a matter of minutes with nearly no downtime; Well, let’s just say Gazillion could really benefit from their example.

Retcons. My opinion on this is probably where I can be the most toxic. In Marvel Heroes many people have paid cash for their character. Why in the burning hells would you tell your customers that the character they paid for not only can never have their levels reset back to level 1 but that they have to pay cash to respec their build? People will argue that you get one free retcon from doing a quest. It’s one free per character, and is not repeatable. Well that is a great way to introduce the system; it is not a great way to encourage the experimenting with builds.

Have we not had flat out wars over silly specs for lulz? Battle Mage anyone? Charging cash for Retcons while restricting one’s ability to re-roll their character, does nothing but stifle experimentation. All those nerds (like myself, don’t get all offended) who would tell their friends about this awesome, yet completely unlikely build they created, now have nothing to say, because it will cost them $2.50 to respect their character.

Side Note: We do have a famous character called Punchclops, (Cyclops with a melee build). If Retcons were easily attainable (their drop rates suck) would we not have more Punchclops running around? Also, they have mentioned the possibility of re-rolling once you hit level cap, similar to the prestige system in that FPS game. I love it. But I would still prefer an option to flat out re-roll anytime, and unrestricted and on the cheap.

Notable mentions: There is a ton of interaction between the developers and the community members. The upcoming test server will provide us a chance to test The Human Torch, and the new upcoming content. Patches have been aggressive, and striking to the heart of what the community has been requesting. I’ve played a lot of online games, and I have never met a more devoted and attentive development team; they even pretend I don’t come off as semi-bipolar and overly critical of certain (retcons) game mechanics. Which is nice of them.

This game is a lot of fun, with many improvements constantly coming in.

Some people reviewing Marvel Heroes barely put any time into playing the game (I can tell because the information that they're "pulling" out of the game is incorrect and inaccurate). If you play the game for about 2 hours you really can't give an honest review, because you don't know the game! Anyway, I will

Anyway, I will admit that Marvel Heroes has had several flaws, but with each day the flaws presence fades away. Patches have been coming in almost weekly, and the patches are based on the complaints from the community. The character prices have even been lowered because people were dissatisfied. The game is run by people who actually listen.

I've invested almost 200 hours into this game. I am very satisfied with the progress Gazillion is making, and I am excited for the future of Marvel Heroes.

The devs are shelling out BIG improvements what seems like every 1-2 weeks and resolving all the concerns the fans have. THey actually take the time to read our posts and fix and implement things on behalf of the feedback.
So here is to a MArvel HEroes that is getting better daily, and if you are a diablo 2 fanatic, you will get addicted to this game..just give it some time. Let's get this review score up people, this game and their astounding effort is well deserving. I simply cannot wait for the upcoming patches and changes!

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So, its an Action RPG MMO type thing that launched a couple of months ago.
    It features Marvel Comics heroes.
It could be described as Diablo derived or inspired, as it's a mouse controlled loot grinder in many respects.
And it did have a rocky start, but has been improving as the developers change stuff and add features and continue to improve it.
The different heroes have fairly distinct powers and playstyles, and although the pricing structure was a bit high for my tastes to buy the non-starter heroes, they are introducing a system which should see you able to get, (and choose) any hero within a week or two of playing time by saving up "Eternity Splinters" dropped in the game.
The graphics are nice, though they are fairly low on the "Wow!" scale, there are lots of FX as heroes powers go off, the models and animations are all between good through to excellent.
The voice acting is particularly good, with some really nice versions of characters.
The music is pretty good, though like all videogame music, repetition can lead to over-hearing it.

The gameplay itself is still a work in progress as the Devs balance and rebalance in response to the players.
Some characters fare well in the early (before level 30) story parts of the game, and then don't yet scale terribly well in the tougher end game levels.
I can see people thinking it's too easy if they play through the story and a couple of green terminals, but try the later red terminals solo or a group challenge on your own if you are a hardcore ninja gamer.
Because you have a fairly wide choice of characters to pick from (assuming you buy, get drops or use the coming Eternity Splinter system), it's possible that there is something which may appeal to everyone.
The levels are being improved upon, there is a nice random city mission coming soon (it's already on the new test server) which features a random combination of villain groups to fight, alongside simple muggings, bank robberies, maggia protection racket shakedowns, Hydra or Doombot invasions and attacks by Moloids and so on and so forth.
Yes, you will become familiar with the individual elements, but the random combinations make it feel like a new experience each time.

I'm not a Bendis fan at all, so I hated his dialogue in the storyline as much as I expected to. And the plot is rather stupid in places, but provides some sort of rationale for all the action.

I prefer to see the game as a Marvel Simulator, offering a wide array of characters and enemies to fight against, either solo or in teams. In that sense I feel the game is closer to Freedom Force or Marvel Ultimate Alliance than traditional Diablo clones.

Yes, there are still some issues to be addressed, and I was as cynical as any about stuff like the non-stacking crafting materials and relatively high hero prices. But crafting materials now stack on the test server, and the Splinter system puts your choice of hero within your grasp in exchange for playing the game.
And it really does seem to be the case that the Devs are turning this around, and making something rather good.

And there are moments, like playing as Daredevil taking on Elektra and Gorgon in Midtown on the test server, where it does feel like the elusive "playing a comic book".
And playing in a team can be great, or awful, depending on your fellow players. Usually it's at least OK, and sometimes you just "click" with people and end up doing quite a number of missions.

My 8 is a high mark, based as much on my experience on the test servers, seeing stuff which is not yet in the game, but will be soon.
It wont be to everyone's taste, and they still need to polish it up some more to get it to a diamond. But I'd say it's worth a look, since it costs nothing to try.

Under-delivers on the promise of the licence. A middling action-RPG that you’d have to be a Marvel fan to love.

At the end of the day, though, these few good points don’t make up for the flaws with what should be the most important elements of a game like this - the combat and the loot grind - and an overall lack of polish. Being free to play, you don’t lose out on anything but 15 odd gigabytes of your data cap if you want to give Marvel Heroes a go, but with that said, it’s hard to recommend this game over the other free to play lootfests that are around.
