Someday, maybe, the Mafia series will find its footing. It will stand tall, secure in its own skin. Until that day, Mafia III will sit at the back of the bus, waiting for something braver to defy convention.

At its heart, Mafia 3 is a simple story of revenge, but its actors sell it to you with gusto, and the linear prologue does a great job of getting players invested. Unfortunately, as soon as you’re out in the open-world and you’re free to roam, it becomes a repetitive slog, not least because when you’re doing the same thing on repeat, it only serves to highlight the limitations of the rest of the game.

It tells its story well, with smart writing and some superb characterisation that elevate its simple revenge plot. Ultimately, however, it never capitalises on its open world potential, instead succumbing to an almost constant lull of tediously unimaginative repetition that makes for a boring and dated open-world shooter.

Worst of all, the game seems to be rendered at a far lower resolution than I was setting it to, looking like a 720p game blown up to 1440p. It's a bizarre mix of occasionally good looks contrasted with some supremely bad ones, and it tops off an already lacklustre game.

Mafia III’s story is often told with impressive subtlety and personality, despite occasionally being prone to cringe-worthy clumsiness.
  3. It’s just so self-sabotaging at every point. Astonishing amounts of work have gone into this, to creating such a vast detailed city, writing an apparently infinite story, building something on such scale. And then this has been dramatically let down by the dreadful AI, a woeful inability to edit, and the mindnumbing monotony of its identical missions. I’m fascinated by it, but I absolutely cannot recommend it.

Its a generic open world game with a world that feels absolutely empty and lifeless. Graphics are nothing to write home about, there are many problems and bugs in the game, not to mention the awful 30 fps lock. What were they thinking?

Not even a real Mafia game. Just a pathetic studio trying to push an agenda behind a remarkable franchise. Shameful and disgusting at the same time.
Save your cash and spend it elsewhere. Get Gears Of War 4 instead.

I cannot believe another franchise is going down the toilet, such a disappointing year 2016 is turning out to be.

I got the game not expecting too much, but I was still sorely disappointed with the overall product.

    -30 fps lock

Story itself deserves more than a bullet point. It seems to me that the people in charge of writing the story wanted to make political statement and not create a meaningful story in the Mafia universe. In the earlier two games, you took the role of a starting mobster and slowly grow in rank and become a respected member of a crime family. In this game, you take the role of a young black man who starts to rid the world of evil, racist white people. It's a black writer's power fantasy and has little to do with the original games of the series, no matter how much Vito is present in the game. It bugs me that an unskilled hack managed to hijack the series name to use it as a crutch in order to make a political statement.

The soundtrack is kind of decent, though, as is the fact that you can refund the purchase if you bought it through Steam anf if you have played the game for two hours or less. A solid 1/10.
