It was described as a game about choices and consequences with "multiple endings".

They were dealing with the consequences of choices well in the first 4 episodes.

Until they give you just 2 obvious choices in the last minute, making you wonder what was the point of playing because both of them make all your decisions irrelevant.

This is an example of a game that takes many disparate supposed influences, then implements all of them badly. As usual with my reviews, I'm going to start off with the aesthetics of the game, then talk about the writing and dialogue, then conclude with mechanics, then summarize. Let's get started.

This is an example of a game that takes many disparate supposed influences, then implements all of them badly. As usual with my reviews, I'm going to start off with the aesthetics of the game, then talk about the writing and dialogue, then conclude with mechanics, then summarize. Let's get started.

First up, Life is Strange's design choices look like something that was put together by someone who has only experienced American youth culture secondhand. It takes extreme examples of some icons, then copy/pastes them together in some "hella" strange mixture of stereotypes that sort of belong in a satirical movie, ( which, in my opinion, this "game" desperately wants to be, but we'll get to that later.)
You have the hipster teacher, complete with the stereotypical thick glasses, the well intentioned white knight Warren, Chloe, then of course, Max Caulfield. All of which would be great in a movie like say, Junebug. I find it rather flat and uninspiring. But hey, looks aren't everything right? Let's move on. The animation and graphics are quite dated looking, and the interface felt clunky.

So let's talk about the writing. It bills itself as inspired by Twin Peaks, Donnie Darko, Groundhog Day, etc, yet captures nothing of the charm of any of those movies. The dialogue once again, felt like a satirized version of something someone heard that one time, from that really obnoxious teenager in that one movie. The dialogue is pretty cringey, and the portrayal of a lot of the characters in the game left me feeling no sense of attachment to any of them. I wonder how badly you have to miss the mark, if you have to bill yourself more to fans of movies, rather than gamers? I digress.

Mechanically, again, the game feels clunky, it's a mess of casual pandering QTEs, and falls into some ridiculous adventure game tropes, which is odd, considering how much the marketing is billing itself as more of an interactive movie than as an actual game.

So to summarize, I feel like this game is simply attempting to pander to the Telltale market, but ultimately fails to find anything in common with that demographic. If you're a fan of walking simulators like Gone Home, you'd probably find a lot to like here, but for a core gamer looking for something to actually play, I couldn't recommend spending money on it. There are better games out there with time rewinding mechanics, if that's your hook. I give it a solid 4 to a 5 at best. For fans of the genre only.

All in all, this game is a collection of teenage tropes, not a story worth any kind of consideration, the fact that it is critically acclaimed FOR it's flaws, is a telling tale (pun intended) of the shoddy storywriting in games, even story-centric games.

Hipster nonsense. This game's dialog is one of the cringiest things I've ever heard in my life. It tries way too hard to be deep, when in actuality it is paper-thin. Life is strange was a really disappointing game, I did want to love this game and I like dialogue heavy games but only if the characters and story are interesting or coherent but this game is none of those things.

The story was a mess, it has one of the worst writing I've seen in a story-rich game, it keeps changing tone and there are so many moments in the game that don't make any sense, also this game has one of the worst endings I've ever seen in a game, it makes all your decisions pointless no matter what you choose and it made feel like the entire game was a waste of time, I didn't felt invested in the story but the ending still managed to annoy me.

The characters were poorly written, it probably doesn't help that the dialogue was atrocious, I just don't find Max to be that interesting of a character but at least she wasn't unlikeable like Chloe, I know she went through a lot but the decisions she makes are incredibly stupid and I never sided with her because of it, there were some characters that could have been interesting like David or Warren but their dialogue were terrible and we don't focus a lot on them. To me the worst characters were Victoria, Nathan and the teacher for having the worst lines in the entire game.

There isn't a lot to talk about for the gameplay because you can tell that the developers didn't focused to much on it, they just wanted to tell the story, so the gameplay is weak but I kind of already expected that. The graphics are actually quite good for a story-rich game even if most of the character designs were awful, I've had so many glitches while playing that I had to restart the game a lot, the voice acting was bad and I don't like the soundtrack but that's because it's just not my type of music.

Even if I was pretty harsh on this game I do believe there were some good things in it, they do TRY to develop the characters and have some emotional moments and the ideas and themes were pretty great but the execution unfortunately was weak for me. I feel like if they took more time fleshing out the story and characters, it could have the potential of being a good game, a great game even, I guess that this just isn't for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Sit back and grab some popcorn ladies and gentlemen because I have a lot to say about why I really don't like Life is Strange.
Let's first start out on pros and cons so the retards that like this game can understand.
    Pros and Cons
    Pros:
    Interesting art directions
Interesting attempt at time travel narrative
    Cons:
    The art direction is annoying.
The time travel concept is done horribly.
    The writing is HORRIBLE.
Your choices don't matter IN THE SLIGHTEST
    It isn't a video game

At first, when I played this I thought the writing was satire but apparently, people think this is actually well written. It's realistic, it's how college campus students actually talk, but it's so annoying and unlikeable.

The Time Travel mechanic makes no sense. Why does Max get a nose bleed before Kate kills herself? PLOT. Why does Chloe's death and nothing else that Max does affect everything such as answering the question in the beginning? Also, why does Max get her powers? Why can she suddenly travel through time through pictures? NONE of this is explained.

CHLOE IS A TERRIBLE CHARACTER. She's an annoying histper character that the creators ACTUALLY try to make us care about. If they made her intentionally annoying and we are only supposed to like her because Max likes her and because this is Max's point of view, like a good video game would, then it would be good writing, but this isn't a good video game. It's barely a video game. More on that later. All the characters are trash. Max is bland and uninteresting. Warden is a cuck. Victoria is other there to be the b*tch character and Nathan is other there to hate. Nathan does become kind of good character after he releases he done diddley goofed and Mr. Jefferson is well written though, I will give them that as well.

And the choices, oh the choices. The "game" tries to be a telltale "game" (don't know why you would want to) and gives you "choices" such as WATERING YOUR PLANT. And saving a girl from suicide. A girl that is inconsistent to the plot. The game tries to tell you that these choices matter. You are told this for 4 episodes. Then it becomes clear that you were just lied to and the game takes a massive steamy sh*t on itself and gives you two choices. Two. Save the annoying c*nt Chloe or kill everyone else. This really shows how effortless of an ending it gives you. Plus, the ending where you save Chloe is like 3 minutes long showing they REALLY didn't care
    .
And finally. The game isn't a game. You walk around with an absurdly annoying shoulder camera and collect f*cking bottles and hold down a button to rewind time and then click one of four options to say. That's not a video game.

All around Life is Strange has a few good moments such as the twist that Mr. Jefferson is the killer and there are a few funny moments but that's all hidden behind terrible storytelling and even worse writing. Episode one is free on steam. If you want to check that out and quickly discover how terrible it is. The bathroom scene is honestly what did it for me.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This review is marked spoiler because the plot is primarily what's wrong with the game (and it's impossible to discuss otherwise). By now you've probably read other negative reviews and figured out the problem - Episodes 1-4 build up a plot which Episode 5 literally makes zero sense of, leaving gaping plot holes in its wake and rendering the primary "gimmick" of the game pointless. You basically save the life of a friend in Episode 1 by rewinding time, then use that power from then on to help your friends. By series 5, you are "told" that use of that power has caused a storm that'll destroy the town. Your "choices":-

Ending 1 - You "rewind your rewinds" back to the beginning to undo everything saving the town but causing your best friend to die. Great except it makes zero sense for two reasons as laid out in Ep1 : 1. You already saw the storm coming BEFORE you used your power for the first time (the storm is the opening scene in Ep1), so it wasn't using your power that caused it. 2: The "rewind time" is actually creating "alternative reality loops", in which each time you rewind, you spin another loop. So even if "rewinding" did 'cause' the storm, doing a "big rewind" won't undo anything, it'll just create another parallel loop that'll make the storm even worse... The storm itself makes zero sense and trying to "rewind the rewinds" is openly contradicted by some comments in Episode 1. This ending actually eliminates every reason to play (and replay) the game in the first place!

Ending 2 - You don't "rewind time" and the town is destroyed but your best friend lives. After spending early episodes talking about dating boys, you then ride off into the sunset shacked up with her after magically turning lesbian... Given the developer is the same one who created "Gone Home", this "twist" really isn't a surprise. But ignoring that, "the storm" itself still makes zero sense as a "consequence" of your power given it was already brewing before you initially used your power (which is never explained HOW or WHY you got it)...

There are a lot of other "issues" as well : Adults writing as "with-it teenagers" is never easy, but every 18-21 year old in the game seems to still act like the worst Hollywood stereotypes of the 12-16 age group. Writing was cringe-worthy in many lines and the whole "high school drama queen" theme felt more annoying than immersive. Likewise, hardly any of the characters were actually likeable. Two or three of your "friends" (including the girl you 'save' Chloe) were unfriendly, petty and annoying enough to want to not save. What on the surface of some interactions appears as an initial "air of intellectualism", later gets shown to be cheap attempts at emotional manipulation followed by screwing up the plot after a bloated script collapses under its own weight. By that I don't mean it's "difficult to understand" but rather they introduced so much "stuff" regarding other characters on top of the main plot, by the time the end came they either forgot or lacked time / money to wrap everything up they introduced.

In short "Life Is Strange" is another of those "your choices really really matter this time" point and click adventure games where not only do most of your choices not matter in the slightest, the only important choice you do make 5 mins before the end of Episode 5 wipes out all of your choices anyway yet still makes no sense either way...

The dialogue and pretentious politically correct nonsense makes it hard to keep playing even after only a few minutes of game play. Add to this the absurdity of the story from the opening minutes of the game, and I found myself constantly asking myself who could like this game?

The dialogue literally made me cringe, and based on how quickly and thoroughly the game hits you with so many political messages, the mindset and political leanings of the developer become crystal clear. In just a few minutes you get an anti-gun message, an anti-bullying message (when will the bullying of minorities by white people stop?), a rich people are bad and can do whatever they want message, a men are sexist message, a climate change message, and of course, virtually all of the bad people are white. There is mention of a Vortex Club that is, apparently, bad, and filled with people who think they are better than everyone else. Your character points out a black student who is a member of this club, and for just a moment, I thought they might actually have a minority student who is being portrayed as something other than good or a victim, but just as soon as Max (the avatar) points out this student, she qualifies him as an exception. Whew! That would have been racist! And of course we can't forget about the Native Americans. You just have to mention them. Even if there is no reason too. (Just don't mention the native Indians of Mexico who were wiped out by the Spanish.) All of this in just the opening minutes of the game. It's amazing that no one else mentions this in any reviews.

All of that nonsense aside, the game interface and pacing are awful. The characters are terrible. The graphics are lousy. However, if you like clicking on objects and hearing things like: "This is a camera, it is really cool.", and "This is a plasma TV that is really awesome!", or "They must have really spent bank on these computers!', then maybe this game is for you. It's also very "clever" how they are able to stretch out the game to avoid having too much actual content. After an initial boring sequence, the game actually makes you repeat the same sequence listening to the same painful dialogue again. What's not to like, right? This review is based on the first episode only. I'm sorry, but I couldn't bear going on any further.

Save for very few actually interesting moments, the game has nothing to offer. From the ground up, the game is set in a cliche filled world, inhabited by basic archetype characters, who do little to change things up or provoke a more-inteligent player. The puzzles offered are dull and fall into the "time-waster" category, twists are extremely predictable and most characters have little to no actual motivation for their actions. And in the few cases they do - it's a thread that ends quickly. The plot offers solid foundations - the opportunity for something better is surely there, but the finished product can be bestly descibed as dissapointing. Missed opportunities are abound: taking photos is just for the collection, instead of a possible interesting mechanic, etc. The biggest problem of the game is that the protagonist's abilities make no sense. Not only do they rewrite actual science theories (while using others selectively), but they are inconsistent in the game itself. They bend at the will of the narrative, not to the player. Anyone who can think logically and has some reading experience in the sci-fi field will take this product as a complete insult to the genre. Sadly, that would be a perfect world. Ours is one in which this game gets praise for no reason, while actual gems are lost in the dirt. If you are a player, who has ever read a book and played at least a couple of good games in your life, stay away. There is nothing strange about Max's life - just cliches on top of cliches, covered in filters of unjustified reviews. "Life is Strange" is one of the worst story-driven games made to date. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I absolutely HATED episode five. I got really into this game and was very invested in it. Loved the idea of a choice based game. But as you play through it all gets darker and darker. By the time you get to the last episode it's so rapey I can't even believe they went so far with it. I mean, the main character ends up kidnapped, thrown in an underground bunker, duct taped to a chair, and her sicko teacher takes pictures of her after he drugs her. If that wasn't bad enough, you go back through time to try and fix it repeatedly. So episode 5 is basically you being kidnapped and put in that chair like SIX FREAKING TIMES! It seriously never ends. And after you get out, you have nightmares about it for the entire rest of the chapter. So it's all one giant hole of rapey disgustingness that repeats over and over again. Not my idea of "fun." The game was awesome up until that point! And I'm so disappointed in the end. NOT a good game for rape victims or people who've been molested or traumatized. And lets face it, this is a reality for girls. Not exactly something I need in my video games when I deal with it in real life. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Waow... I have no words.

What an absolute waste of time and money.
With that said, I decided to give Life is Strange a try... and oh boy do I regret everything about it.

First thing that messes with me is the mouse sensitivity, either you put that thing ALL the way down and make navigation in menus insufferably slow, but your camera doesn't fly round when you're in character mode... or you just have 2000% motion blur all the time but are able to normally use your menus.

So... Starting a new game! Now, as a brand new player to the series, at least that's what I would consider myself, I went all in on the tutorials, getting things explained and show, little did I know I would have to sit and just read for hours before the game itself even started... or well, the game tutorial started. at this point I was already considering whether this was worth it since this lowered every expectation I already had... I mean how can I be expected to remember all this stuff with no way of getting it explained again unless I have to break the pace of the game ,minimize it and google stuff?

So getting to moving around... barely, every time I move what seems no more than 10 meters, there's a new pop-up telling me "this is important and you do it like this, which will affect the world you play in" generic message. Cool choices matter, I get that by now.

So (extremely) slowly and with a ton of pauses because of explanations, I FINALLY get to the combat section of the tutorial. And what do I get... never before have I had to read that much to understand a combat system. I could go on about the wall of text new players are met with.

After finnishing reading more stuff about this minor obscure detail in combat, I get to the actual thing... It's worse then Skyrims system. Extremely clunky, free-targeting-city unless you choose one specific target... which somehow always ends up in the back ranks so you might as well retarget, and suddenly, that target is in the back ranks... oh my lord. At this point I'm about ready to give up, Heavily discouraged by what feels like The Shakespere Collection in text that has to be read and understood, and utter stupidity in combat systems. But I press on becuase there has to be some light at the end of this tunnel.

So at an all-time low in-game, I decide to atleast try to get some more exp so I can be at least somewhat useful... Oh wait, let's pause the game becuase during the tutorial we didn't make you read about skill points,
    Just great...

After actually giving up on reading and just wanting to mess around, I slam my space button and just skip it and decide to figure it out at some point when I really need it.

I finally just gave up and closed the game.

    So what did I learn.
    - Unless you're willing to come out of the game with a PHD in iLife is Strange stuff, don't open it up.
    - Whatever you try to do, assume you have to read about it in some random book, stupid pop-up or your journal.
    - Combat is insanely clunky
    - Story is very unimmersive and flat. at least the tiny bits I got to "experience" (Seriously, just 2 edge-lrods in some tavern)
    - There are so many systems that are extremely confusing to new players that they don't even bother.
    - Unless you can connect a controller, the game is nearly unplayable with mouse and keyboard.

Im biased and i dont know what im talking about KEKW

HORRIBLE GAME. Doesn't let you save when you want, saves when you don't want - particularly when you screw up because at some point they suddenly decide that you lose your power to go back in time.
Clumsy controls, etc, etc. Not worth a penny.

Hipster teenage trope simulator with annoying shoulder camera. I think the creators of this game desperately wanted to make a artsy movie but had to compromise with making a video game. And they failed.

So that last time the game has you climbing the path nearly to the Lighthouse, if the PC gets a Blue Screen you think this has been a very good game. Then you get the last choice and the ending. Worse than ME 3 for an ending so bad it ruined the WHOLE game for me. I am not going to give spoilers so I will not detail my reasons. But I was so, so disappointed.

game-play is boring play with time mechanics is an adolescent story used in ridiculous empty work makes the game unattractive and our choices have no effect on the end of the game, if you have a finale based on either Chloe or saving the city then why . Another narrative game or with a lot of dialogue / cinematic but whose available dubbing is only English.

The other communities such as the French, Germans, Russians, etc... are neglected.

My money will be better at other studios.

Life Is Strange is an imperfect video game and the actual mechanics of playing it, including the time rewind, can become annoying of frustrating, especially when the development team tries to borrow from another genre. But the game makes it easy to create a connection with Max and to care about her choices and trials, a rare feat, and that means any fan of narrative-driven experiences should try it out to see how he deals with the feelings of the protagonist and the impact they have on Arcadia Bay.

Life is Strange is flawed, but this paranormal coming-of-age story is nevertheless refreshing proof that small stakes can still feel important, given strong characters.
