Kunai bears the classic signs of a metroidvania with a ninja, retro-futuristic flair. Find upgrades and secret treasure stashes, fight robots, and well-designed bosses, all while having a ton of fun doing so.

Yes! This! I love it so much! It’s fun, cute, fast, with utterly perfect controls. And hang on both grapples at the same time and you can kwaping yourself upward as if on bungee cords! I can think of no higher recommendation.

Kunai is a fantastic experience. It delights us with a charming main character and an action challenge that is always adding something new to keep us hooked. Undoubtedly, one of the best games of 2020 so far.

Kunai is a thoroughly fantastic game, taking some of the best elements of the genre and putting them into one parkouring package. It’s apparent that a lot of care went into fine-tuning weapons and Kunai to make your actions feel as instinctual as they are fun. Kunai is one of the most unexpected and delightful gaming experiences I’ve had in a long time.

From the opening moments to the end credits, everything about Kunai just oozes charm and its movement mechanics make it a joy to play. An absolute must-play.

A great metroidvania game amazingly combining exploration and combat, with frenetic action, original graphics and compelling sounds.

A positive surprise in the metroidvania genre. Although it’s not overly complex and the game needs some time to find its own tempo. [04/2020, p.64]

Kunai balances a gorgeous style in everything it does. Gameplay, graphics, and sound design mesh excellently into a wonderful Metroidvania that’ll have you hooked from start to finish. It’s not perfect, the combat could be a bit harder, but it’s fun at every turn, and that’s always worth applauding. If you’re looking for something to jump into ahead of the chaos of the upcoming months and you love a good bit of exploration and platforming, then you’d be missing out if you didn’t check out Kunai.

Kunai is a decent Metroidvania that keeps things varied and fun before ending at the right time, the balanced difficulty makes it accessible to both veterans and newcomers to the genre.

Kunai is quite entertaining with its frantic action and acrobatics and while it doesn't do anything blatantly wrong, in terms of fascinating discoveries and memorable set pieces it has little to offer.

A quirky little platformer that offers a few hours of metroidvania goodness, thanks to its satisfying grapple mechanics and a pleasant art style. However, with only a handful of weapons, a short supply of upgrades and not enough stuff to accomplish aside from the main story, Kunai leaves a lot to be desired.

Kunai is the work of a promising studio, packed with good platforming, which also suffers from lacking exploration. However, it's one of those games that you will enjoy for a walkthrough no matter how many metroidvania you've played before.

Indie games in the Metroidvania genre are pretty common, but Kunai manages to stands out with exceptionally fluid combat, a wonderful Game Boy Color aesthetic, and swinging around on your kunai. The swinging mechanic is the star of the show here, even if the design of your limited arsenal shows some clear thought went into making every weapon meaningful. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to figure out where you're supposed to go at times, backtracking in Kunai is a bit of a pain, and the level design doesn't offer as many branching paths as its competition. But it's worth playing through the game's short runtime and this is a great foundation for a sequel.

Follow Tabby, a ninja tablet, against evil robots in a post apocalyptic world. Kunai is an interesting metroidvania game with a great untapped potential.

Kunai is an impressive 2D action game. It follows the classic Metroidvania design, which offers a great adventure of exploration. But this is just a taste that won't last long.

KUNAI is a fast paced metroidvania, full of action and explosions, but it's difficult to find in those pixels something new and fresh.

Kunai is a bite-sized Metroidvania that’s well worth the pick-up for the fast, frenetic action alone. Once all the foes have been fought and the bosses have been bested, the Kunai content well has run empty.

If you like the genre, you’ll like Kunai. If you don’t, this won’t be the one to convince you otherwise, but it’s got a great aesthetic and some real bright spots just the same.

Moving around with the kunai (and other tools, but I won't spoil) is so much fun and the fights and bosses a challenge without being frustrating. Tabby's facial expressions are hilarious and the music and graphics very fitting.

    Would definitely recommend!
