A weird game with an amazing atmosphere and a really long, vast campaign. [CD-Action 03/2013, p.71]

I wasn't expecting much and had readied myself for another buy not played past the first look but I couldn't. The mix of relaxing atmosphere, vicious but fair platforming challenges and non-violent exploration just captured me and has refused to release me ever since.. I haven't had that much fun prowling tunnels and caverns since Super Metroid (and I can't get more euphoric in terms of comparisons than this!). I you like exploration don't think twice: Get it! The former two games had a unique style and atmosphere and while Knytt Underground is nicely made game it looks like maybe other 10 games I've got in my library. Also, why hasn't it been ported to switch yet? Still a wonderful platformer though! Full Review »

I would love to rate this game higher, but there's a small number of very big flaws marring it.
The first is simply the writing - not only is it awkward to the point sometimes of embarrassment, the tone the dev was clearly aiming for in it could not fit the tone of the game any less.
Secondly, there's the graphics - again we have a jarring mis-match of tone and feel between the gorgeous, surreal and bleak tiles and backgrounds and the gaudy and amateurish character artwork.

On the other hand, if you can look past those two criticisms, this is a beautiful, atmospheric game with excellent controls, intriguing mechanics and immersive, sprawling metroidvania level design.
