Interesting game and history buffs will be in heaven since it has real-life characters weaved into the story which features good VA and a fun story. The combat is a bit overwhelming and clunky IMO but it is by far not the worst of the game's issues. My biggest qualm with the game was just how damn buggy it was. You know the bugs are overwhelming in a game when the moment you get slightly stuck on a quest the first thing that pops in your mind is, "Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?" and that can be a HUGE buzzkill when you are trying to enjoy the game and boy oh boy will you find yourself asking that A LOT. It reminded me of Skyrim at launch. Games like these are really best to play 2 years after launch as you not only will save some money but you the bugs are worked out. I hate people giving the excuse of a large RPG game like this is bound to have bugs. Yeah, no sh!t. That is considered but this game goes beyond average (as did Skyrim) and I point to The Witcher 3 as exhibit A . A game with a map just as big as this one with 1/10 of the amount of bugs. IMO the game feels rushed and although it is quite immersive it still feels a bit restrictive as there are a number of items that in most games of this caliber you would be able to take such as an ax leaning in a barn or some other tool on the table and you cannot. I also wish you could play in 3rd person but that is just a nitpick.

Also noticed terrible lip sync in the cut scenes although I really did enjoy them and the acting. I also wish they varied the character face design a bit more and most people looked the same. All in all, it is a fun game and I could have easily rated it an 8 if only the bugs were not so bad. If you can get this game for half price of release price it may be worth it but I know if I paid full price for what is essentially a beta release I would have been highly upset. Thank the gods for torrents.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a great game. You have a lot of freedom to roam through the nicely designed open world. The game is mostly true to the European historic context and has a complete voice over, which adds a lot to the immersion. The quests are unique and there are a lot of details in places you don't see them in other games.

This is a game you need to take time to play. If you rush it, you will be annoyed by the chores the game puts you through.

    It has some problems.

    - The worst fighting mechanics in any game I've ever played. They tried to make it realistic, but that failed miserably and it's the reason this game is not an easy 9 or even 10. It all just feels slow, clunky and unresponsive, even at high skill levels.

    - The AI is crap. Enemies can track and attack you during pitch black night.
    - There's a save game limit and the players need to manage (i.e. delete) their save games.
    - Issues with impassable terrain like ledges you should easily be able to pass.
    - You can get stuck in trees.
    - The save system is supposed to make decisions important, but it can be frustrating sometimes. After losing half an hour of progress, you just want a regular saving system.
    - No inventory management (mark as trash etc.). Mount inventory not available from vendor screen.
    - Sometimes you get a bounty on your head and it's not clear why.

I know the developers wanted the game to be immersive and unforgiving, but I think making it a bit more user friendly and accessible, like The Witcher 3, would have been better.
It's their vision and how they like the game to be and I accept that, but despite liking a lot of things about the game, the issues -especially the combat and saving systems- prevented me from finishing the game.

This is mostly a good game, it is very unique and has good characters, world and story. Though there are some parts that are slow and boring.
I like that you aren't some overpowered special chosen one and start out just as a normal peasant.

I like that you aren't some overpowered special chosen one and start out just as a normal peasant.

Combat is sort of ok once you train and get used to it but it still feels clunky even when you get used to it. The auto lock on system is annoying and terrible if facing many enemies and I only found it decent when using potions when fighting multiple enemies.
The game defines itself as being realistic,
however being realistic shouldn't mean that it lacks quality of life. And when games lean towards realistic often it makes it less fun and more tedious and frustrating.
Such as can't pause during cutscenes which is annoying when it happens when the phone rings or my cat is demanding attention.
Even worse is the very limited save system. Especially as the game is poorly optimised and plagued with occasional crashing and freezing which is frustrating because of the limited save system.

This game is not polished enough and can often be buggy and glitchy and definitely can tell it's a indie game.
I've had bugs with some quests such as
I've had a bug when doing the bathhouse quest for Sir Hans after getting the wine and returning he was no longer at the bath house and instead was sleeping in his bed. I had to reload a previous save and do the quest again and this time it was ok.

This is a game that wont appeal to everyone. This is a game I like but not love as there are quite a few things I am not pleased with. Such as pacing of the game feels drawn out and everything take ages to do, you have to spend so much time practicing combat just to get better stats to be able to fight anyone adequately.
I recommend this game as I did enjoy playing it despite the bugs. I liked playing through most of the DLC's, only one I didn't like was a Woman's Lot as playing as Theresa was so tedious and is only worth it for the companion Mutt.
Overall it is a very unique game and worth playing if you can put up with the combat.

I expect a lot better for a game regardless of if it's indie or AAA.

    Realism/10
Edit: after another playthrough with almost all DLCs finished (thanks to DLCs' incompatibility with mods that actually make the game playable) I raise my score from butthurt 4 to 7. It's kinda good game but very unpolished and it won't become one because the devs ended their support

Issues though. So many issues stopped this game from being amazing. Bugs. Game crashing, quest breaking bugs. They occurred frequently but in my play through began to pile up towards the end of the game where the quests were getting a little convoluted compared to the standard fetch quests that were the stock quest. Quests failing seconds after receiving them for no apparent reason led to much time spent replaying things that I had already done. Yay limited save game mechanic. The few mods that are out there try hard but at several points had to remove them all to progress as would often get caught in an infinite loading screen. Had to remove mods, play to get back to that point praying for the best... Not a good time.

WTF moments - Cloister quests and their omnipotent mind reading guards. Such a bore. Ending was quite underwhelming. Invincible characters are silly. Especially when they are on my side. But nothing beats the epilogie for pure WTF. It went... forever? And never went anywhere! it was death!

Good game plagued by issues! Coulda been amazing!

Kingdom Come: Deliverance developed by Warhorse Studios and released in 2018 is the best game I'll never finish.
In this review I'll be going over various topics such as story and characters; visuals, performances and sound design; side content and finally, gameplay and controls. Please enjoy. Hopefully you find this spoiler free review enlightening and helpful.

I'll begin by prefacing, I didn't finish Kingdom Come: Deliverance. I'll get onto the reason why later in this review but just know I have sunk a mere twenty five hours into the game. I played the game on PS4.

The storyline of Kingdom Come: Deliverance is really rather simple, here is a light summary.
A young man, Henry, is thrust into the land of 15th century Bohemia when his village is attacked and his parents killed by a vengeful ruler and his barbaric army. Henry sets out to claim revenge against his parents murderer though that is certainly easier said than done.
The concept is sound and compelling. It is a great example of how story can work hand in hand with gameplay in an immersive way. Henry begins the story as a talentless, cheeky trouble maker who can hardly pick up a blade, let along use one. Throughout the game Henry grows into a charismatic, deadly, cunning force who can cut down a bandit without breaking a sweat.
His journey is rich, compelling and unpredictable and rarely drags. It is more than enough to keep you glued to the screen. It all feels positively grounded and realistic, because it literally is.
The characters are defined and interesting and many have excellent arcs.

Perhaps the greatest aspect of Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the painstaking attention to historical accuracy. The world feels so alive like I'm stepping back in time. Peasants beg on the side of muddy roads hoping for even a lick of food, birds flock over dense forests sending their calls all through lush, sun-kissed valleys, its thousands of these little touches that make the land of Bohemia a joy to live in. It's a minor issue but the frequency of sun showers really irritated me, people who have played the game know what I mean. All in all one of the most immersive games I've ever played.
The graphics are good. The lighting can, at a handful of times make the game near photorealistic however textures pop ins are ridiculously frequent as are other graphical glitches. Load times are extremely long bordering on three minutes occasionally. Now, allow me to highlight the greatest flaw of the game in my opinion GLITCHES BUGS GLITCHES EVERYWHERE!!!!!! This is what ultimately put me off Kingdom Come Deliverance. From small glitches like texture pop ins and clipping to catastrophic issues like whole quests glitching and extreme game crashes. Awful stuff, even two years after the game was released.
Sound design is occasionally inconsistent but mostly authentic feeling and snappy especially in battle and in urban areas. Very present and immersive sound.
The voice acting is off-putting at worst and serviceable at best. Major characters are voiced well enough but side characters often feel lazily voiced. I also noticed many of the same voices repeated across several NPCs.

The side content for Kingdom Come Deliverance is actually pretty damn excellent. It contains a large amount of activities such as, gambling, hunting, exploring, looting as well as many traditional side quests allowing progression in many different ways. Time never really feels wasted no matter what you're doing. The side quests themselves are fun, lengthy and varied. They all have multiple ways to complete them and they can even be failed altogether. They feel as player driven and choice based as the main questline does.

Now, onto gameplay. Combat can be tackled in a variety of ways. Keeping your distance with a bow (my personal favourite), charging in with a longsword or sneaking around slitting throats after a bit of pickpocketing of course. It is extremely grounded and realistic you don't have a reticule when aiming a bow for example, and it takes a lot of getting used to, but it does become quite a bit of fun when learnt. This is no fantasy CRPG where you have a million ways to spec your character, far from it. It is unforgiving and "hardcore", as much as I hate using that word, it seems fitting. Many people don't like the lockpicking minigame but it never bothered me, I found it extremely tough but fair, I didn't play the sneaky type though. I enjoyed all the mechanics revolving around speech as well.
The controls are pretty awful. I hate games where you must hold circle to speed up and then have to awkwardly stretch your index finger over to the thumbstick to look around. Feinting, horse movement, locking on and general traversal feels awful.

When Kingdom Come Deliverance is running on all cylinders it is an undeniable masterpiece of game design but at its lowest, darkest moments it is a buggy, fiddly catastrophe which is what ultimately what put me off.

    Good Sides:
    Great graphics.
    Perfect realism.
The Middle Age are very well reflected.
    Good gameplay.
    Nice and hard combat system.

    Bad Sides.
    Optimization is very bad.
    A lot of bugs.
The story is a little simple.

I will get the second game as soon as it comes out.

Expand

An amazing modern RPG that if slightly more polished, would give the Witcher 3 a run for its money. There's plenty to explore and see, many interesting side quests to engage with and a wonderful story to experience. The combat has a steep learning curve and the performance can be questionable at times but if you can get through those two issues you're in for a treat!

Every quest has a very, and I mean very, specific path or area you can roam in. The bush that is a meter away might seem like a good route to the goal, but..."you were killed by a stray arrow" again! Then again. And again. And again. So you realise the path is quite limited and try to stay within the designers boundaries. That might work. Oh....you were killed by a stray arrow. Again. Overall, I quite like the game. It's very realistic in some ways. Some say it is unforgiving. I'd agree. You can however learn most of what you need to know to pass each scenario after a few tries. Then you get killed by a stray arrow again, which actually means you went outside of the boundaries of that scenario by a few millimetres. Mostly a very good game with a lot of potential, but even with the ABC markers, it's not always clear what you should actually do or what the best way there is. Value for money, as you will have to spend hours doing almost the same thing again and again for one quest till you hit a save point. A lot of trial and error is involved. You will need a good game guide. Even then, it is a challenge almost every step of the way. I like it just a bit more than I hate it, and I have played for over 70hrs. Expand

Upon the release the PC version is the only reasonable way to enjoy Kingdom Come. And there’s a lot to enjoy, because historically accurate Middle Ages are an awesome setting. The beginning of the game might not be spectacular, but give Deliverance a chance and it will develop into a unique, deep, gripping experience. [04/2018, p.42]

A robust RPG deserves your attention not only for its domestic origin. You will easily forgive its smaller mistakes because of a great narration and a complex gameplay. [Issue#283]

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a different kind. It's incredibly absorbing in its pace, it amazes with a manically detailed medieval era features and a totally true atmosphere, a series of skillfully built quests and, and when you get used to it, a fantastic combat system. There is a one-too-much cliché in the story arc, but the main problem lies in the technical issues. The game is, however, such a remarkable, huge, different and fresh experience that the occasional bug can be simply ignored.
