It’s a fine adventure game, if not a little bland at times, mainly in its story, which is borderline cliché at worst, and only superficially pretty at best.

The tale is about a corrupted land, changed for mysterious reasons by mysterious characters -this doesn’t really get resolved until, literally, the end of the game-; you’re Kena, a girl that starts collecting furballs that are called rot, which help you in your journey, the game is divided in puzzles, combat, and platforming; for the most part is a very cleverly designed game reminiscent of the classic adventure titles from the early 2000’s, think of Jak and Daxter for example.

However, there are some issues here and there in the design, mainly when it comes to the game’s sense of direction and how counterintuitive the game can be a lot of the times with how it proceeds to misguide the player, Kena is a game that has a map but it lacks direction and clarity, it has waypoints, but the ones that only point at the general direction from where you’re supposed to go, the game is doing a lot of these things to incentivize branching paths and give you a reason to collect the more rot and currency that you can trade both for outfits, which you unlock through a challenge system that you really don’t get access to until much later into the game (about hallway through), but also the game provides currency for different upgrades that are mostly combat centric, with only a few serving to ease some of the later puzzles in the game with some later abilities as well.

The problem with the levels however, is that the game has a really poor way of guiding the player by using one of the most common tools modern games use to guide you, and that is the lighting. At one point I didn’t notice a path because the game’s lighting made it seem as if it was a pitfall, in other case, a significant detail needed to resolve a puzzle was obscured, making me have to redo the whole puzzle again, in other cases the game also has backtracking and some paths that interconnect, essentially making it so you can get fairly lost at times, thankfully it didn’t happen enough to ruin the entire experience, but it did hurt the game for me; the issue here is that the game’s aesthetic and brightness setting was all set correctly, the fact it happened reiteratively, and that I read some forums and comments of people experiencing the same, tells me this is an issue with the game, not something uniquely to me, sadly.

Overall I liked the game though, despite its shortcomings I didn’t found it to be as bland as some people said it was, it’s a beautiful game, both because of its graphical presentation, as well as for its given art style and aesthetic, I love the way that the Rot look, and the fact that one of the collectibles that you get is a number of different hats that you can make them wear, as you progress you can even see the army of Rot following you around, each with their respective hats, it's a minor thing, but it’s also pretty cool, the combat system is also pretty satisfying, specially once that you upgrade your abilities enough for them to combine a fair bit.

So, I would recommend the game, specially now with new game plus mode and the multitude of different difficulty settings, challenges, and unlockables. Just be aware, it can get a bit frustrating with the poor sense of direction it provides to the player, as well as with the bland story later on.

A beautiful puzzle-platformer game made in a kid's animated movie art style. But you wouldn't expect it to be a difficult souls-like game. While I found the puzzles, platforming mechanics and exploration to be a fun activity to go through, the combat difficulty settings sucks a big portion of the fun in this game.

If you don't like hardcore souls-like games and don't like playing extremely easy ones either, then this is not for you for its lack of in-between, no matter how good I think the rest of the game is.

    * Some boss fights have piss poor balancing. Even when playing on difficulty 2/4 you can get 2 shotted.
    * Some really annoying bugs. Sometimes you can't upgrade abilities even though the ability is unlocked and you have eniugh resources. Sometimes you can't save even if you go to "Save" in the menu och select a slot (nothing happens and no explaination why). Sometimes the fast travel stops working (I use a shrine but nothing happens when you select a warp point). Restarting the games fixes these issues but it happens very often which is really annoying.
    * Everything takes place in a forest so the environment feels a bit too "samey".
    * The majority of the chests etc contain hats or currency for buying hats for the Rot. I personally don't care about cosmetics, which means there's very little value to explore for chests etc.

    Verdict:

Had it not been for the annoying bugs, the cutscene fps and the boss balancing I would have given it a 8/10. It's a good game, even thought it's not a game of the year contender.

The game looks gorgeous, but does a very poor job of giving you a sense of agency. What you're doing and why you're doing it is unclear at best, and the Rot mechanics become repetitive and boring extremely fast.

For all its amazing visuals, the game unfortunately does nothing more than copy the most overdone 3D-animation style that Disney and Pixar had already perfected 10 years ago.

The overall look, the tropes, the little creatures, the bouncy stuff everywhere... the game is DESPERATELY SCREAMING at you to find it cute. It really comes across as pandering more than actual creative intent.

Controls and combat are decent; quite standard but they certainly do the trick. The music is repetitive and annoying though. Also I got softlocked during the first two hours of gameplay.

Very average experience. Other AAA or indie games have both done far better.

The combat has you managing your health and your special meter against enemies who hit hard but go down equally quickly against your special abilities. This creates some very intense, high stakes, almost puzzle-like and tactical combat scenarios which encourages you to switch up between melee and ranged options that feel very well design and very rewarding to clear. The story feels a little hit-or-miss and is dependent on your ability to connect with the characters, which I unfortunately didn't owing to the brevity of the script. Overall, I do recommend.

    Cons :
The story makes no sense and is completly cryptic especially when you finish the game.
The acting is really bad,Kena actress is out of touch everytime she speaks and so are many of the others. It’s mainly due to a poor dailogue writing and bad directing.
The combat camera is unaceptable. If you look at the Witcher 3 or Ghost of Tsushima or any other melee combat game, you’ll notice that in combat, the rotation of the character is no longer oriented to the direction of the movement, the character is strafing to move, so that you have less work on the camera and can more easily focus on the opponents.
This is not the case here, even in combat the rotation of Kena is still oriented to the direction of the movement and even though you have an option to re orient the camera toward the opponent, it does not always work or has some jitter and not pleasing movement. This is a big problem making combat hard to read, making combat harder, not because it’s more challenging, but because it’s more cumbersome.

The dodge animation does not cancel the attack animation, meaning that if you were making an attack and suddenly need to dodge, the attack needs to finish first before being able to dodge, this is really cumbersome because you can’t dodge and therefore take damages that you would not have taken because you were trying actually to dodge...Same for parry.

Some puzzles are hard to read also, like the fishing shrine that can be confusing even when you think you have understand in what order to shoot the different elements.

Some part level are badly designed in the way that you’re looking for your path which is a sign of unreadable level design.

If you’re moving and opening the map at the same time, your move input will move the map cursor, so you need to stop moving inputs before opening the map, cumbersome.

They made a huge mistake made by other dev sometimes : forgetting that they are other games that exist.
For instance, the double jump. In this game you need to put a delay between the first tap and the second one to double jump. The problem is that, since Mario, double jump has always been engaged by quickly tapping the jumping input two times, this has become a reflex, this is how any game should make a double jump and actually how all games make double jump except Kena, so, when you arrive to a platform, you have a high chance of dying because you did not make the double jump the way this game wants it to be done. This is really not good, you have no right when you make a game to try to change something that has been here for years. It’s the same mistake that Rockstar did in RDR2 when at some moment you need to use the right mouse button to shoot and the left one to aim......
On top of that, plateforming is sometimes not precise enough, you jump to a ledge, she’s suppose to grab it but she doesn’t and you die, cumbersome.
This problem becomes infuriating when you combine it with the timed puzzle platforms engaged by the bombs and you then have to wait for the platform to get back to their original position as you won’t have the time to climb them again. Unaceptable. (The 90’s want their gameplay back by the way)
I don’t know why they decided to put so much timed platforms at the end of the game but it just not fun to play, it’s been a long time that I have not seen a timed thing in a game because everyone knows that it’s just cumbersome and not fun to play except the people at emberlab.

At the end, the game feels very long, you just can’t wait for it to be over, I think that despite the fact that the game is short, it should have been even shorter actually.

The platform and timed platform gameplay is really really really cumbersome and destroys all the other good things in the game, I really don’t understand who had that idea but it’s really bad. The game would have been better without the timed platforms, they are not challenging, they are cumbersome and overdone. I spend litterally 30 minutes on one of them at the end as it was nearly impossible to reach the end on time.

6/10 mostly for the graphics and because it’s a small dev making their first game but please, fire all the designers that had the time plateform idea and that decided that the rotation stays orientend to the direction of the movement. Fire also some of the level designers that created some unreadable levels.

The combat is impressive, with a variety of difficulty levels and extremely entertaining boss fights (15 total).

There were several annoying bugs (not being able to open certain chests).

    The game was too short.

Overall, if this game had a longer more compelling story / character development, it would be hard to fault it. It is an impressive first at bat for this developer, with amazing presentation value and impactful boss fights; but, at the end of the day, this game is too short to pay full price.

The graphics are amazing. Gameplay is alliright, maybe bit too simple. Difficulty levels are bad, the easiest difficulty is way too easy and the next one is too hard.

    Great visual.
    Questionable difficulty choice.
In general I enjoyed my time playing it.

Very cute graphics and nothing but that. Take away the visuals and it's a pretty average game.

    - 7.30 - 14 hour long. -before I give it 3/10 because frame drops and annoying gliches but anniversary update fix those and add new things. -repetitive loop gameplay fight same enemies and same puzzles over and over
-useless secret cosmetics and game only forest.
-only good music, main bosses, pixar characters design and cutscence.

It could've been really great. Instead, you get a game with a real identity crisis, as if a group of inspired, driven, and talented people got together to create this wonderful, beautiful Pixar-like game, but then the boss barges in the day before shipping to tell them this game will now play like a poorly-done, unfair Souls game. That is Kena.

That is Kena.

Insane "difficulty" spikes that come in the form of mindless, save-die-reload-scum gameplay to memorize cheap boss attack patterns (read: uninspired dodge baiting) over and over so you can poke holes in them between attack frames. Talk about breaking immersion in what looks like a very immersive game! Your own strategy and style is of little consequence -- you have to learn and adapt to enemy fights; there is no learning and adaptation on your foe's part, which offers very little expressivity and flexibility in what could've been a great, fluid combat system.

All in all, garbage repetitive gameplay that leaves you feeling as if a whole lot of "something" of each part of the game -- exploration, interactivity, combat, progression, and difficulty -- is missing. All that's left is disappointment.

    - The story is exciting and the final message is great but doesn't keep me playing for hours.
    - The characters are okay but the Rots are adorable. I just wanted to buy new hats.
    - The graphics are amazing, it's beautiful.
    - The open world is not too big, not too small but is empty. You will want to explore and is not crazy about exploring everything, which is good.
    - The combat is... The problem, IMO. Normal enemies are too easy but the bosses are unnecessarily hard. Why is so difficult to parry? The rest is fine, it has a good set of abilities, the enemies have unique attacks and the combat is fluid and fun. I tried to play with parry because I like to play like that, but in the end, I learned to play without parry because it was easier.
    - The puzzles are just fine. You have to explore, look around and think a little bit. You will not need a guide.

The strongest feeling I got from Kena: Bridge of Spirits is that it is "eclectic". It extracts the folk culture and religious culture, and then injects them into the Disney-like art style, creating a wonderful chemical reaction that is shocking enough.

From the very first moment till the very end of your journey, Kena: Bridge of Spirits is a heart-warming experience and a real pleasure between the visuals, puzzles and combat. Atmospheric music, beautiful lively graphics, believable heroes and cute little Rots - each little element is woven into the amazing whole that is the gaming experience provided by Kena.

Kena: Bridge of Spirits is "to the point": visually it's a feast for the eyes and with an interesting percussion-based musical score. It's fun, thoughtful, made with care and inspiration, even if it doesn't offer anything original in its individual areas. Especially considering that this is Ember Lab's first effort, the future is bright, and we can already imagine an even better sequel.
