Kaiserpunk brings the creativity and consideration for construction of a Sim Game to the deep strategy and nuance of the 4X genre.

There's a lot to do in Kaiserpunk, but dealing with it won't always be pleasant.

KAISERPUNK ambitiously blends city-building and grand strategy but falters in execution. While it nails the fundamentals, clunky mechanics and missing QoL features hold it back. With a sleeker UI, better optimization, and improved visuals for some of its map elements, maybe it could shine—but right now, this lack of synergy makes it worth less than the sum of its parts.

Kaiserpunk fails to turn its exciting ideas into a consistent gaming experience.

Kaiserpunk has a lot of great ideas but feels as though it could have used more time in development before being released. Big changes to the game’s grand strategy mechanic and small changes to its city building could have made Kaiserpunk one of my new favorite titles.

Kaiserpunk is awesomely ambitious, and I respect the game a lot for what it’s attempting to do. Fans of both the series it draws from will find aspects of Kaiserpunk they’ll enjoy. However, I just feel like I’d rather play either Anno or Hearts Of Iron - both games that are available on Steam often for the price of less than a pint. I hope that work on Kaiserpunk continues and the developers flesh out some of the systems, rework the UI, and work on both key aspects of the game (city building and regional management) to add more detail. There’s a lot of potential here, but Kaiserpunk’s just not quite ready for war.

While some players may love some of the things Kaiserpunk does with the genre, many may find it is a mostly fine take on the concept. If the publisher's past games are anything to go by, there is a chance that the game will expand with more content to help build out the experience further. But, as of now, players will have to wait and see.

Perhaps one of Kaiserpunk‘s biggest issues is that it tries to do too much.

While it has some cool ideas, a unique aesthetic, and often rewarding production chain management, Kaiserpunk definitely is not ready for the front lines in its current state. There are huge, save-killing bugs. The interface lacks what I would consider to be some fairly basic functionality. And the often strong city-building layer doesn't harmonize well at all with the over-scoped and cumbersome strategic map. Maybe some substantial patches could theoretically let me recommend Kaiserpunk on its strengths as a city builder with a novel premise. But for now, I can't even really do that. The trenches may have vanished under the plow, but playing Kaiserpunk still leaves me feeling shell-shocked.

Ultimately, the Kaiserpunk team tried its hand at presenting a mishmash of genres, but the resultant game is a jack of all trades without excelling in any individual facet. That said, if you’re looking for a game that combines warfare and strategy with other aspects, like role-playing or management, then you might be better off playing titles like Crusader Kings 3, Mount & Blade, or Manor Lords. A take on the modern era, sadly, will just have to wait.
