It costs quite a lot of money (note I'm not saying expensive) but it is worth it. They are improving it all the time, and all those laser scanned car&tracks, and physics must be payed somehow. They are trying to make money as any other company, of course, but I feel part of my money is used to make the thing get better. Anyway, a lower subscription fee would be great.

There are some good promotions for new people, and if you like racing, you should definitely give it a chance.

People are always right there to help in practice sessions or in the forums. There are also two very unique and important ranking systems that make this title stand out more than the rest of the sim racing games. iRating and Safety rating. You always get put in splits based on iRating, so the competition is always reasonable to your skill level. Safety rating is gained by simply racing cleanly, which allows you to move up in class and race faster and more challenging vehicles and tracks. As far as physics go, this game is top of the line. Laser scanned tracks and a fantastic tire model make hitting your marks and pit strategy extremely important. The only negatives are the graphics and price. The graphics are a bit dated since the game was released in 2008 and not much has been changed graphically since that point, but that is really a minor issue in a die hard sim racers eyes. Some people may look at the cost as an issue too. But, when you understand the quality of service and the quality of product you are receiving, the price is respectable. Anyone can go try it out and get 3 months for the price of one. It is completely worth it. Expand

the most serious recreation of motorsport you'll find.
the sim boasts the most accurate circuits we've ever seen on PC - the proprietary laser scanning system does an incredible job, and you'll discover bumps and undulations that simply aren't there in sims using handcrafted tracks.

Racing seats, force feedback racing wheels and pedals with pressure cells, and H pattern shifters or paddle shifters are the norm not a keyboard and mouse or a controller. PC performance and the speed of your internet connection become a fairly important factor in creating a better overall experience. Get out on the practice track and learn the basics first and most importantly once you start out in rookie class stay at the back of the group and learn how to avoid the crashes that take place in front of you and you will quickly learn that those that do generally are the 6 or 8 that actually finish the race without a bunch of incident points and generally top 5 finishes are rewarded often for your patience. As far as pricing goes yeah not the cheapest thing on the market but the best isn't often the cheapest. Membership specials happen a couple of times a year and when they do capitalize on them and you wind up with half price memberships year round. As far as the car and track purchases go, save a little and buy items in groups for up to 30% off. I could continue but hopefully this will give you a basic idea of how things are, Good Luck Expand

Even though the penalty system is penalising both drivers, it teaches you to look in the mirrors and actively try to avoid danger. Remember, in real racing you might be in the right, but you can be collected into the wall with major repair costs and physical damage. You have to be aware of what's going on around you and sometimes let the reckless guy by.

As for the price, it is not as overpriced as people describe it. The initial buy-in is not cheap, probably at around $50 for subscription (50% off) and a few tracks and cars you will use. But iRacing runs a great amount of promotions for active drivers. For credits you can get by just participating, your yearly renewal cost will be just $4.

This is the best simulator on the market along with a huge online community to compete against.

    game play
this sim has some of the best racing i have ever been apart of with their IRating system you will always be matched up with people that are roughly the same skill as you and will increase when you do well in a race and decrease when you do badly

it isnt uncommon at least in the Spec Racer Ford to have 1st and 2nd in a photo finish i have been apart of many in other cars there can be bigger game due to how they race but generally you will be quite close to each other in races but one good thing about the price tag is that trolls and kids wont bother you ever because they wont want to spend that money and get banned or they dont have the money in the first place

    Physics
Iracing is not perfect in the physics department however its no bad its quite close to real life but not quite perfect the only car that i have come across that i question its physics is the Skip Barber the brakes just dont seem quite right if you even tap them you will most likely spin now i know about weight transfer affecting the can however this is just far to exaggeration however it has some of the most close racing in all of iracing

in conclusion if you enjoy racing and at that the closest racing you will ever have and can over look the very high price which if thought about can be bought over a long time the physics are not the best out there but it sure as hell close

one note if you do join dont give up during rookies its going to be hell but hold on once your out you will enjoy it a lot more i guarantee you that

This is the only game I've experienced where you don't just jump into races right away (or you shouldn't). You should take races seriously. Some people practice all week just to do 1 or 2 races on the weekend to make sure they're competitive.

On the physics side: With no real life experience my opinion on how realistic it is is somewhat invalid. But based on what real life drivers say in the forums the tires behave very realistically until you are over the limit. The tire model is a work in progress as is everything in this game, and they have made vast improvements over the years. Always gunning for making the most realistic tire model ever.

Am I a serious sim racer? No. I just like driving sims. Do I compete? Nope. I like doing personal best laps. Is iRacing the best sim I've come across to date? Yes. For sure. It's harsh, it wants you to DRIVE. It's multiplayer is awesome. Had some GREAT moments (3 abreast in Skip Barber around the 1st corner of brands!). Awesome, requires and expects commitment. Well worth it.

Are the graphics great? No but they are Xbox 360 quality and it runs great on my cheaper PC. It's not PS2 graphics as I saw one reviewer complain. There are plenty of videos out there for see for youself.
I found a code for 3 months free, then they had a promotion going on for half off a year. So I got 15 months for $49.50, less than a year of Xbox Live. Then I compare the cars and tracks to buying a new game to play on Xbox Live.

So far including subscription I've spent $217.74. But that also doesn't include new computer and steering wheel roughly around $365. So in total just to hit the track I have close to $600 spent. But to me that's really no different than buying a Xbox one, year of Live.

iRacing can be expensive but a couple times a year they have half off year long subscriptions, so it'll cost you $49.50 instead of $99. A couple times a year they have bonus credits, which gives you $100 worth of credits for $75 and/or $25 worth of credits for $20. You also get a 10% discount for buying 3-5 pieces of content at once, or better get a $20% discount for buying 6+ pieces of content. Once you have purchased any 40 pieces of content you get a 25% discount from there on out. You also can get participation credits. $4 for running 8 of the 12 weeks for C&D series, $5 for A&B, with I think a max of $10 per season. You also get bonus credits on your year anniversary date.

So can you go broke buying tons of content? Absolutely but there really isn't any reason to. Find a series or two you want to run and buy that car and the next 2-3 weeks worth of tracks. You could get away with spending about $40 every month (depending on how many cars you want to run). But after a season once you have most tracks for the cars you want, there's no more fees. The only regrets I have so far is thinking I really wanted to run the road side and buying the Skip Barber and the next 3 weeks worth of tracks. Tried the car, didn't like it. Haven't touched it since.

The initial startup costs are high but it's still much cheaper then even trying to race go-karts. Try to actually buy a Modified or Sprint Car and iRacing is chump change.

From your local Saturday night dirt track, to NASCAR, to the world of Formula One and everything in between, iRacing offers an online, multiplayer experience unlike any other in the genre. Factually, no other simulation or game boasts the active community iRacing does, boasting over 5,000 active racers at any given time that you can jump into racing with on a moment's notice. There is never a time on this simulator you cannot find something to race against many other people.

iRacing painstakingly scans every car and track to within 1mm of visual and structural accuracy, then adds a higher level of data than ever before to give the user a truly one-of-a-kind experience across the wide array of disciplines in auto racing. Some sims may do one type of car accurately, iRacing does multiple types of racing accurately. There just is no peer in the world to what this simulator provides to the general public.

The sim is realistic enough for me to say the following: "Instead of comparing iRacing to other 'Racing games' on the market, you need to be judging iRacing's overall cost versus buying an actual race car of your choice, whatever it may be. It's far cheaper to iRace, and you won't get hurt doing it.

They know their competition is failing to provide the organization that is required to have a proper racing atmosphere and so they charge what they like about it. On top of that there are small nagging issues that have been there since day one five years ago, like net code issues that often ruing races in combination with the overly sensitive damage system. Example you're are in a tight race with someone else you both do your best to give each other racing room yet the net code registers contact and bends the suspension geometry even though you had a full meter between the cars.
Overall if you're a die hard sim racer and shoddy business practices don't bother you, you'll enjoy iRacing. I myself find myself going back to it mostly because as I said above there is no competition in the organization of the races, in between those periods when I just want to lap I find rFactor 2 and Assetto Corsa more than adequate and even better especially with rFactor 2s live road feature.

    2. Pay-2-Win

    Too expensive.

Firstly you have a subscription which isn't too bad at first, only $15 for 3 months. However after your sub is up you better be prepared double that because making a new account will just mean starting all over again. If it was just a subscription then I wouldn't have a problem with any of this, however for that sub you get next to no content, you'll have to pay $10-15

If it was just a subscription then I wouldn't have a problem with any of this, however for that sub you get next to no content, you'll have to pay $10-15 for each car and track. The costs just mount up so much and all the sub promotions are for new people or people who haven't subbed for months. They do not seem to reward your loyalty.

A lot of the content isn't even worth the money, I don't understand why but a lot of it is very dated. Why haven't we got the latest version of Silverstone? Just seems odd racing on the version from, many years ago. I bought that track in excitement because I was doing a track day and wanted to be prepared.... then I found it it was the old version. What do we pay you for? Update old content already.

When is there going to be a new engine? When are we going to have improved sound? It all feels very 2005, we have games like Project Cars, Forza 5 and Assetto Corsa out there now, while they aren't directly competing, they are making iRacing look and sound old.

All this is such a shame because iRacing is the only racing game out there with the online structure in place to mean you can race, have it be clean and also have it be meaningful. You have a penalty system in place, you have rankings and you can progress your career in the game. No other racer has this, I mean most you do like 3-5 laps, everyone crashes into each other and that is it....

I can understand the barrier to entry, if you make the game too easy to get into, you'll end up with hackers and lots of idiots trolling. However I feel like as a loyal player, I don't get a good deal..

So realistic it's almost a professional tool more than a game. Still the best realistic racing experience out there.

An impressive game, but not one that will be to everyone's tastes, especially not those after a quick thrill. [Sept 2010, p.88]
  3. iRacing is a very tough simulation and can only be recommended to gamers immune to frustration. Only real motoring fans should pay a monthly fee and even more for additional packs. The graphics give the impression of an unfinished beta, but at least the atmosphere between the players is always friendly.
