Ion Fury is like receiving another chapter of Doom or Duke Nukem 3D, with all of the limitations that brings with it. Ion Fury doesn't revolutionize the genre, nor is it attempting to, as the game accomplishes what it set out to be - a new title that uses an old fashioned style that might not be to everyone's tastes, but is still a lot of fun to play.

For better and worse, a near perfect replication of mid-90s first person shooters, that makes you wistful for the old days… and secretly glad things have moved on in the meantime.

Ion Fury is the ultimate retro first-person shooter that feels authentic because of its use of the ancient game engine Build. While it comes with certain limitations, it feel modern enough to be both playable and enjoyable by a 2019 audience. No story, no cutscenes – just shoot whatever moves and find hidden levers and keycards. Love it or hate it, Ion Fury brings back a certain 90s nostalgia reminiscent of Duke Nukem 3D.

It does not want to be a modern shooter, of course, but a little more depth would not have hurt.

Ion Fury is flawed, but there’s plenty of gruesome fun to be had here, more so if you’ve got fond memories of 90s shooters. If Voidpoint/3D Realms can tighten up the game for an expansion pack or a sequel, I’d definitely be up for more Bombshell. Just don’t expect this outing to blow you away all the time.

The issue is that it is trying to nail something that started to feel stale almost 20 years ago when a little game called Half-Life came out and changed everything.

A thrillingly authentic take on the first-person shooter's 90s heyday, delivered with nerdish enthusiasm. [Eurogamer Recommended]
  2. It’s a game where old-school decisions too often trump good ones. A blast from a past I never lived through, where puerile humour and “area complete” screens tease you about not being a “real player”. Ion’s tongue might be in its cheek, but I’ve got little interest in what it’s saying.

Edit: The game is not getting censored anymore, but people are most likely still going to remember the « betrayal » to some extent. The company needs to take this as a lesson and move forward. Nobody knows how they'll censor their future games after this, but this game is worth buying and playing if you like old school FPS.

Not too impressed. Feels like a Duke mod that should have been released for free. Very bland and redundant level design. Did they have anyNot too impressed. Feels like a Duke mod that should have been released for free. Very bland and redundant level design. Did they have any Q/A? Its either super easy or impossible. Not very well optimized either, I've got a pretty decent machine and yet it struggles. Pretty telling that 3DR didn't even make the game themselves. Their last few releases have been awful. Hope they at least paid these VoidPoint guys well. Full Review »

Have to be honest, Ion Fury is pretty lame. AI is weird and all over the place, weapons and enemies don't seem balanced, everything about itHave to be honest, Ion Fury is pretty lame. AI is weird and all over the place, weapons and enemies don't seem balanced, everything about it is very generic too. 3D Realms has great PR, no question about that. Its just the game isn't that fun. Its nowhere near Duke 3D or Blood. I don't understand what everyone is raving about, especially the "professional" critics. Had this come out in the 90's, I'm pretty sure it would have been lost in the shuffle. You are better off buying one of the classics for $5-$10, than spending $25 on this. Just my two cents.
