Full of 1970s atmosphere and attitude, I-76 proves that Activision has more tricks up its sleeve than giant robots. It's a blast. [June 1997, p.76]
  2. Combining a great premise with an excellent physics engine, this may be the most realistically exciting vehicular violence since Steve McQueen blazed through the streets of San Francisco as Frank Bullitt.
  3. The music is the best I've ever heard in a game. I'd buy the soundtrack even if the game never existed.
  4. You want weapons? I76 has about 25 different weapons. Slug throwers, SPP Pods, Flamethrowers, Mortars, Droppers, and even a hand-held 45 caliber automatic pistol are there for the taking. There are about 15 different views to choose from to set your sights on the enemy, and there's even a Missile Cam, for a rocket's-eye view of the mayhem.
  5. The story and cut scenes are brilliant, in a kitschy Starsky & Hutch kind of way... Not since LucasArts' "Full Throttle" has a game maintained such a singularly unique style.
  6. The second major problem is the wildly fluctuating difficulty levels. Some missions will be easily completed in one try; others will require days upon days of unsuccessful attempts. Not that the challenge is insurmountable, but it seems somewhat misguided for Activision not to have included difficulty levels - or at least some options to make the game easier.
