The game is fun enough for what it is, it's not exceptionally bad or good. The games graphics despite going for a stylized look, actually come off as fairly date. The games graphics despite going for a stylized look, actually come off as fairly date. The setting of Egypt is interesting enough, but why they thought the need to incorporate a redneck as the main character is beyond me. They don't really do anything with this aspect of the game except shove awful and corny jokes down your throat with the very funny redneck voice. So apart from playing as a character who spouts annoying one liners, there is really nothing 'redneck' about the game, almost everything else is somehow based in the theme of Egypt, to an extent.
Now I realize most rogue-lites require you put quite some time into them before things really pick up, and I tired with Immortal Redneck. I played for about 4 hours, tried 4 or 5 characters I believed but then stopped playing. The game was actually very fun to play a lot of the time. The gunplay and movement was fantastic, and I liked the different weapons and characters you could play as. I just didn't really find much enjoyment in upgrading the skill tree, as most of the things you upgrade are just passive stat changes which aren't super noticeable. Apart from that, you can get some bigger changes which cost A LOT more, and you can buy some characters which are arguably the most interesting thing the game has going for it in terms of this skill tree thing. You can also buy some one-run only items from the merchant, but they never really seemed all that worth it.
I suppose the biggest turn off for me was the lack in variety. In about 4 or 5 runs I really started to notice the game slow down in terms of how much new stuff was being thrown at me. There came a time where I was virtually never seeing new weapons or scrolls, and had definitely seen all the enemies. Also, having the exact same 2 (or what I assume is 2 per pyramid, I only played the first one pyramid) bosses per pyramid was kind of dull, I think the surprise of not knowing what boss you’re going to fight would have been nice, and added to the excitement of being randomly generated –and helped make the game not feel so repetitive. Now this wouldn't necessarily be a problem - but I found the bosses fairly dull and tedious. Apart from having the normal rogue-issues of not being able to perfectly balance bosses for all types of runs and circumstances - the two bosses I fought weren't that interesting honestly. Fairly repetitive attack patterns and some pesky movement which usually ended up with me having no ammo for the fight. And the second boss did some enormous damage - at one point hitting me for almost half my health and abruptly ending my run.
Now, I don't mind challenge, challenge is crucial to this sort of game. But the runs go for so long, and I found myself spending way longer than I would've liked travelling across the usually enormous levels. For how fast your character actually controls, I found navigating the levels felt surprisingly slow and tedious. And there’s really no secrets to be found on these levels usually. You almost always just clear out the room, collect the drops and move on. There are a handful of rooms which ALWAYS have a chest in them in the exact same spot, that’s about it.
It’s not a bad game, just definitely one of the weaker rogue-lites I’ve played. I like the premise of mixing old school FPS games with rogue-lite elements, but this game is just a bit hit and miss. Needs more content and a more interesting upgrade system so the game doesn’t feel as repetitive. I got up to the second boss of the first pyramid three times in my time playing it, and I didn’t come close to beating it once. The first pyramid should be shorter and easier so players don’t get stuck immediately, or there needs to be more to see in the first pyramid so getting stuck isn’t so tedious. I’m interested to see what else lies within the later portion of the game, but I really don’t feel like playing it anymore either. Decent game, some people might love it, but I think most will probably have an average and short lived experience with it.… Expand
