  • Summary: I Am The Hero is a pixel art, beat 'em up, fighting game that tells the story of a "Hero" with a glorious but mysterious past. Is he the hero he thinks he is or is there a another side to this legendary figure?

I am the Hero is a 2D beat ’em up fighting game with a nice pixel-art style, music and fighting system.

You play as a mysterious “Hero”, a very relaxed and cool looking guy who can stomp any enemy into the ground. The game looks very fancy and beautiful. It reminds me much those old 8-bit games, but it’s more polished and has to offer more, it’s something like a modernized old-school game. In addition to the nice visuals and music, there is plenty of humor in the game (great dialogues and enemy design. For example, there is a rapper, who is battling you, literally throwing words and phrases at you!).

The gameplay is quite challenging but easy to get into. As the game supports gamepads, I used my Logitech controller. There is quite a big skill list in this game. The controls are quite similar to those in fighting games like Street Fighter or Mortal Combat. You can use different combinations of buttons for different moves, combo them into an infinite chain of kicking around your enemy and use your energy for super moves or a buff, making you immune to stuns and stuff like that.
After each level you have can choose between unlocking a new move for your main character or unlocking a second character (you can switch to him whenever you want in the game). But I found most of the second characters quite useless as they have a very limited move-set and aren’t really strong.
The enemies are quite easy in the beginning but throughout the game you meet new bad guys and bosses with new types of attack and you have to face more and more of them at once. Luckily, they sometimes drop burgers and coke (fills up your health and energy).

The game also offers a local and online multiplayer mode but I couldn’t test that aspect of the game.
The translation also needs some polishing in some moments but it’s OK in the whole.

    Positive:
    + nice pixel art
    + great soundtrack
+ quite a big move list
+ unlocking more moves and characters
    + amazingly long combo chains
    + humor
    + trading cards and achievements

    Negative:
    - second characters are weak
    - some mistakes in the translation
    - sometimes difficult to make the moves you want

All in all this is a great game and I had fun with it. The game could need a multiplayer story mode and maybe a versus mode (choosing between the second characters and fight each other).
