I Am Bread arrives after a slew of physics-based "comedy" titles, but is nonetheless a winner thanks to compelling play and a shockingly-decent story.

I was still drawn into the game's mechanics, attitude, and replayability.

A funny little game, ideal for playing with friends watching you and having lots of laughs.

After Surgeon Simulator, another crazy title from Bossa Studios hiding more than you could imagine from a slice of bread: making a toast has never been so hard and funny, like in I Am Bread.

Its clumsy controls make it disheartening at first, but it's worth it for the reward of eventually overcoming them and finding destructive new paths to toasty success.

I am Bread is clever but ultimately shallow, relying on its gimmick more than anything else. But it's a pretty hilarious gimmick.

Despite what you might think, this is a real game, and a piece of entertainment able to stand on its own. Surely, it's different from what you might be used to, and it requires a specific taste for nonsense.

Good humor and freshness is what carries this unique creation that started almost as a joke. Finally it's uncovered as a competent game that leaves us wanting a few extra bread slices.

The very bread and butter of this game, its revolving concept, can be as frustrating as it is interesting. Creating something original does not provide free-parking on Metacritic Station, even if it is bread flying across a room.

I Am Bread packs a surprising amount of entertainment into a title that’s available for $14.

The best bread simulator ever made, and despite the rampant silliness there’s some inspired gameplay mechanics and level design baked in.

Gamers shouldn't be fooled by the lighthearted premise of I am Bread as both difficult controls and gameplay mechanics result in continual frustration. I am Bread would have been better off as a funny, short gimmick and not a complete game focused around the premise of being a bread slice.

The dough gets sour a little too quick. [July 2015, p.79]

The original and surprisingly entertaining game, which unfortunately is a drag very quickly. Moreover the game is flooded by annoying technical issues.

You can be bread. I can be bread. I can be destructive. I am destructive. I am bread.

It’s a good game, a few sandwiches short of a great one.

The controls are relatively easy to grasp and once you’re done with the main missions, the extra modes put a different twist on proceedings, but as always with these games, it’s really at its best when you can share the nonsense with others.

More game than you might expect, but still best played for an audience.

Though the very idea of a game about a walking bread may attract some, this could have been a much better game.

The joke is in the premise, in the title, and it won't stop winking and snickering with you for hours on end. But all it takes is one moment of clarity, one second-guess "why was I laughing" for the whole thing to fall apart. And in this game's case, all it has to do is remind you of how irksome it can be and often is to go from being a goofy joke to a serious headache in a flash.

You'll have a few hours of fun but by the time its YouTuber-friendly novelty factor wears off you'll have decided it's far from the best thing since sliced bread. [Issue#161, p.104]

I Am Bread it’s just another fancy simulator born from the ashes of games like Goat Simulator. It’s fun for a couple of minutes, but then it bores.

I Am Bread has novelty, but that novelty drains away quickly, leaving nothing but frustration in its wake. It’s YouTube bait and nothing more.

Like all those Goat/Rock/Grass Simulators this nonsense is amusing for half an hour maybe. [06/2015, p.65]

The game, though a little hard to control, is pretty fun to mess around with. I feel the game is too hard, and the story and graphics are really lacking. It's pretty fun for a physics game, but I doubt you'll play this game for longer than maybe a few hours. Full Review »
