Hunt the Night is a great example of what a first-time developer can accomplish. It ticks almost all of the expected boxes, while nailing the balance and cohesion between its melee and ranged fighting techniques, and how one relies on the other. The game is a solid challenge, particularly in its boss fights, without ever feeling unfair. The times it doesn’t fully score a win at least show enough potential to hint at what could have been. Its relatively short runtime offers a tight and enjoyable experience that could do with a little bit more content and world-building to iron out the well-intentioned content provided. With a very solid presentation backing it up, it’s an easy recommendation for dark action RPG fans.

Hunt the Night is close to being a great Bloodbourne-inspired Souls-like, but it suffers from a midgame area that's a chore to navigate and a late game difficulty spike that goes beyond punishing and straight into sadistic. Some of this could be adjusted in updates, but as things stand, I can only recommend this title to those who really want to challenge themselves. If that sounds like you, then there is much to like.

Combat can be fatiguing rather than stimulating, and frustrations are plentiful. But underneath it all is a game with potential, influenced by an assortment of classics. Hunt the Night, but only if you are tolerant and can forgive some conspicuous imperfections.

When it went on sale I had expectations, since the art of the game caught my attention, but I did not think that it would exceed my expectations by far, with incredible settings, attention to detail, with a gameplay and soundtrack cared for with great care. , and above all, with some final bosses that without a doubt more than one will remember (both for the combat and design, and for the time it took me to defeat it hahaha).

If you see Hunt The Night and it reminds you of a Zelda with touches of Souls and Bloodborne aesthetics, you won't be mistaken, and I assure you that the experience is well worth it.

At the moment it becomes one of my favorite indies of 2023.

Full Review »

So, I played Hunt the Night and got all the achievements on Steam, but honestly, I wasn't too impressed. I thought it would be amazing because the art looked cool, but it didn't live up to my expectations. The settings were okay, I guess, but they weren't as magical as Mario's colorful worlds. And the little details? Well, they were there, but they didn't really add much to the overall experience.

The gameplay and music were just average. It didn't feel as fun or exciting as playing Mario. The controls were okay, but they weren't as tight and responsive as I would have liked. And the music, well, it was forgettable. Nothing really stood out or got me pumped up like the iconic Mario tunes.

Now, let's talk about the final bosses. They were tough, I'll give them that. But they were frustrating and didn't feel as satisfying to defeat as Mario's big bad Bowser. It took me a long time to beat them, and it wasn't as enjoyable as it should have been.

If you're expecting Hunt the Night to be like Mario, with its charm and joy, you'll be disappointed. It just doesn't have that same magic. It falls short in comparison, and I can't say it's one of my favorite indie games of 2023. I'd rather go back to playing Mario and having a blast.
