Very well made indie metroidvania. Story is centered on just enough for it to be intriguing while also leaving a lot of it up to interpretation. In addition the combat focus is a great subversion from much of the other games in this genre. Basically have no complaints

It's astonishing that this game was made by a small team of two to three people. As a Souls fan, this game resonates strongly with me. Every delicate chord that Dark Souls has struck within me was also struck by Hollow Knight, and with pinpoint precision. The controls are crisp and tight. Every enemy and every boss fight is memorable. An intriguing story is told through gameplay and NPC interaction, and the inquisitive player is greatly rewarded if he chooses to dive a little deeper and look a little harder. The soundtrack is superb, and it works with the sound design and color palette to bring areas of the game to life. Hollow Knight also does a great job at understanding its medium as a 2-D platformer; the developers know the limitations of the medium and work within its bounds, but also play to the strengths of it and offer challenges that wouldn't work in a 3-D environment. Ultimately, this game has so, so much depth and I enjoyed every second of it. Keep up the good work, Team Cherry! Expand

Hollow Knight makes you believe that you are free to go wherever you like from the beginning of the game, while it actually guides you slowly and kindly to the actions you have to make or the places you have to visit. The 2D ambiance that this game adds in your experience is amazing while every single location on the map has a unique theme that changes its backgrounds based on the story or the surrounding locations. The gameplay of Hollow Knight mostly combines fast critical thinking and very good timing actions. Your mistakes will be punished harshly but not always. It needs tons of concentration and good strategy before winning any boss. For me, the ultimate thing about Hollow Knight is how well everything combines together to deliver an extremely fast-paced ( in battles ) game while in a really slow-quiet and moody environment ( sometimes ). From the way, they blend-in the music in the battles to how the player's fillings can be taken into count, is what makes this game an absolute masterpiece and a MUST PLAY. The only game in my life that I would rate 10/10 was Breath of the Wild. But comparing the hours you can spend and the fun you can have in this one, to the industrial gap between Nintendo and Team Cherry delivers a 10/10 for Hollow Knight. Expand

There is a reason that this game has such a cult following, it's because the combination of the serene vibe and it's sometimes ruthless difficulty sits on this intersection of different things that a lot of titles lean heavily towards to. In the case of Hollow Knight, it combines all these different ideas, the zen vibe of something like Zelda or Gris, the difficulty of a soulslike because of it's risk/reward structure, and the exploration and world design of a classic metroidvenia make this game such an engaging world to explore. I poured over a 150 hours in this title, and still now and then I feel compelled to go back.

Their quality assurance team/guy had a severe lack of perspective of how frustrating it can be to a beginner to the game. It throws you in an environment that explains NOTHING, and while that *CAN* be good, it is NOT done well. First of all you collect a currency that is apparently extremely important in the game. But, the game tells you zero information about it. That could be fine and well if it didn't have a mechanic that zeroes your currency without ever being informed that can be possible. Not only that, but it throws the player immediately into some of its most hard to navigate and survive levels. In general the game tries to keep a "mystery" and "hard" element, but it becomes a disaster because it overdoes it with those two elements. Games are boring when they are too easy, or when they are too hand-holded, that is true, but this has passed the threshold of excess. In no way it is excessive for all people, otherwise it wouldn't deserve even a 6, but in my opinion this game is extremely overrated due to its ability to frustrate a lot if not most people. Expand

This is a game about being wandering around lost in a network of gorgeous caves. But when I mean lost, I don't mean "lost in thought" or "lost in wonder", I mean lost as in "walking back and forth with no idea where you're are or where you're supposed to be going. The late game really goes off the rails, giving you destinations but no idea how to get there. How do you get to boss in the bottom of the map? Going to the far top right of the map, of course, and getting an easily-missed upgrade! I didn't check one path because I thought I had already been there, and paid for it with literally over three hours of wandering. This game can NOT be played without a guide.

There is more to this game, but the vast majority is wandering around lost, so I won't get into too much detail. Combat is tight but extremely repetitive - you use your basic sword (called a Nail) for the entire game. Your "special attacks" amount to a magic blast up, a magic dive down, and a magic ball forward. You get all three seperately to enhance the illusion of progression and variety.

There is one good thing to say, though! This game is gorgeous. There's no two ways about it! Almost the entirety of the game takes place underground, but despite this every area is distinct and the ambiance is different. The shining and ethereal Crystal Peak, the creepy Deepnest, the desolate Dirtmouth, and the barren Ancient Basin. Best of all is the City of Tears, an ancient, abandoned city where it is contantly "raining".

But really, this is a game to watch, not one worth playing. Get some poor sucker to play it nearby and enjoy the ambience from a distance. Otherwise you're going to be spending hours hunting that one switch in that one room that will open the path to that one ability that will let you get to that one quest spot.

I really dislike this game for a variety of reasons, and while it might be that Metroidvania games just aren't for me, I think there are a few ways that Hollow Knight can improve to make it a much better experience for any gamer, not just fans of the Metroid series.

    The good:

    * The level design is great and every overworld feels expansive
    * Hollow Knight controls fluidly and attacks feel responsive
    * In terms of presentation, the game is extremely polished and well thought out.

    The bad:

    * The pacing of the game is very bad in the beginning. Most players will struggle to find upgrades for Hollow Knight and while some areas are clearly inaccessible due to lack of upgrades, there are simply too many instances of inaccessibility to keep track of. This is something that Metroid games do well; they give you enough cognitive load so that you can understand what you can come back for without feeling overwhelming. They do this by keeping the scope small at first and then gradually opening the game.
    * The game itself is very unfun. Most of the areas, while extremely polished, look exactly the same and aren't really very unique. The game really didn't keep me engaged as I would have liked from a modern sidescroller and I found myself getting bored often. The combat, while responsive, also isn't very fun. Maybe I didn't unlock enough parts of Hollow Knight, but an hour and a half in I still hadn't found any upgrades to spice things up or make it easier to kill enemies.
    * The enemies are mostly unoriginal. You'll find your same old walkers, sprinters, jumpers, knights, etc. Some bosses have the same types of attacks and weaknesses. I would have liked to see some more creative enemies that aren't so similar. Games like Shovel Knight do this well; enemies are extremely varied, have different properties, and bosses usually have very unique mechanics.
    * The sound is very hit or miss, mostly being a miss. The thwacks and the thumps of being engaged in combat aren't satisfying and a lot of creatures sound mostly the same. It's almost as if the sound designer had no idea what compression is.
    * You lose all of your credits when you die. This was quite possibly the most frustrating thing for me. I was on my way to grab an item in Dirtmouth when I ran into a boss while having low health and naturally, I died. It spawned me at a save station and all of that progress I had made was gone. This seems like a really outdated mechanic and I would like to see other solutions that don't involve losing all of your progress. Maybe provide a save station next to boss encounters or restart boss encounters given that your players will be fighting the boss many times... etc.

Now, you would thing "Ok, this is Metroidvania, of course there's backtracking". But, there's backtracking, which is why we all enjoy the genre, and there's Backtracking. When you literally has to cross the map from one point to the other, because somebody decided not to put fast travel anywhere close. It will literally take you 2-3 minutes of real time to get where you need.
So yeah, you come to a point when you get a new skill, look at where you could use it and literally go "Nope, not going there again, Deepnest".
Some bosses, like the Hive Knight and Traitor Lord are especially notorious for this. Hive Knight is literally 5 minutes of real time platforming and fighting away from the bench.
Do yourself a favor, and farm for Dreamgate which allows you to set a teleport before a boss.
Also, if you don't like extensive platforming, stay away from this game. By the end of it, you'll feel like you're playing some Super Meat Boy.

This has to be the most annoying metroid-like game I've played. It is not too difficult but it just plays this specific game on the player. It makes you want to throw your joystick at the wall. Although I like it, I always leave it with a feeling of un-satisfaction. I've played a lot of games when the norm is to die a lot. Not the case here - as the norm is to be annoyed a lot instead.

This game is absolute **** I'm not a casual player and this game feels disgusting because it's way more unfair than Ninja Gaiden games, also controls, mechanics, backtracking, and the map made me waste a lot of time, 22 hours to beat Hornet and 36 getting lost on the map, I know this is my first Metroidvania, but if this is the "best" game of that genre I will try to avoid it.

    - Hollow Knight's story is not impressed!
    - This is a 2D Side-scrolling game, I have nothing to say about the graphics.
    - The character's ability is boring.

This kind of extremely overrated game is why I'm going to stick to "try before you buy". Bad games like this make you thankful for good ones like Ori and Sundered.

Map is awful, for the first 1+ hour of the game you just run around aimlessly. And actually it doesn't get that much better. There are no real objectives or objective markers, you kind of just wander around a massive maze. The whole game is incredibly maze-like. And there's so much back tracking through areas you've already been in.

There's a bug where it sometimes doesn't register a jump when you're near an edge.

There are poor design things like your basic attack pushing you backwards so if you ever attack someone when you're near an edge (extremely common) you fall off and frequently die or have to trek back up a long path.

There's much about the combat, enemies, level design, etc. that seems poorly designed and unresponsive.

There's a core gameplay mechanic it never tells you about. You have to do a web search once you reach a point where it's mandatory to progress, and you'll find out that lots of other people played 15+ hours of the game so far without knowing about it as well.

Another example is a spot that is nothing special but it just so happens that there's a combination/timing that is ridiculously hard to do in an area that you should just be quickly passing through. There are other areas where you can get trapped in an area you don't have the movement abilities to get out of, and you do a web search and find out it's common and the solution is to quit to the main menu to teleport back to a save point.

If a trainer/mods for invincibility wasn't available I'd have uninstalled early on. It would be a total waste of time doing the same monotonous things over and over. I just tried to get it over with as quickly as possible.

This is the type of game that has the mentality of "extremely hard = fun". It just goes way overboard with the difficulty that even with invincibility on some of the bosses are ridiculous. IE: you dodge for 20 seconds then hit him once. Repeat 20-30 times. Then comes the second wave. Memorize all the attack patterns, dodge for 15 seconds, hit him once, repeat 30+ times. Naturally you'll die numerous times, and thus have to repeat the entire thing over and over. FUN!

You spend 15 minutes climbing up an area then the floor collapses under you and you have to spend another 10 minutes climbing back up. FUN! Then once you get back up there you find out it's the wrong way! FUN!

This is an amazing metroidvania, and an amazing game in general. the controls are tight, the level design is strong, and the world feels lived in and as real as a bug kingdom can be. A lot of time spent running around aimlessly and there no impetus or something of interest to keep going. Cuphead is a more action packed version of Hollow Knight with no filler and more challenge. Salt and Sanctuary or Vigil the Longest Night, or Bloodstained have better atmosphere and worlds and more rewarding and engaging gameplay with reward for exploration and they draw you further in. Every area in Hollow Knight is just boring and repetitive to traverse. The platforming is boring and you can just literally switch off and have go through the motions especially when you have already been through that section 10 times already. Rayman Legends has much better levels than this. The levels are much more dense in that game and actually have effort put into making them fun with variety. When you buy the key at the start you open a door all there is inside is literally a person that tells you that she can't help you. Wow that was worth buying. Then you finally get the wings and go all the way across to a once locked area and its just another shop. Again no reward.

The dialogue is cringeworthy gibberish. Dirtmouth, Greenpath? That should tell you how stupid the writing is in this game. And don't get me started on the annoying sounds the characters make. Totally boring game with stiff controls, repetitive gameplay and stale graphics. Only saving grace is the music which is OK but also just a drone in the background and isn't evocative of anything and doesn't build the world or tell any sort of story.

This is another one of those games where the developers simply were not good enough to develop a game that solely relies on skill. This game has to rely on touch damage and attacks by the enemy in order to make it harder. This is just bad development and poor decision making.

Hollow Knight is a Metroidvania with a well of content to discover that’s as deep as its labyrinthine caves. The world of Hallownest is compelling and rich, full of story that’s left for you to discover on your own, and built with branching paths that offer an absurd amount of choice in how you go about discovering it. With such a high density of secrets to find and fun, challenging enemies to face, it’s worth spending every moment you can in Hollow Knight.
