There is a lot here that is "ALMOST there!" but just doesn't quite make it. Combat, for example, devolves into spamming your available spell buttons and then switching to another spellbook page to spam the next set, rinse repeat. There are no tactically really needed - spam spells, defend if you see orange, and dodge if you see red. There are some interesting "combos" that cause a spell to occasionally hit a little harder, but there are really no BIG combos that could leave you awestruck.

The open world puzzles are FAR too many. There is really no reason they needed to spam this many Merlin trials or small caves with one chest in it or fly through these balloons, etc. It is incredibly mind-numbing. They likely should have cut this stuff down to only 30% of what they actually put in.

The crafting was also a bit pointless, as using consumables is typically a waste of time, outside of the very occasional health potion, which you will pick up plenty of along the way anyway. So all the potions and herbology etc, just wasted. As well, the capturing of beasts was also an interesting idea that got mired down in pointlessness as well as not being able to reach full potential until after the game was already basically over anyway. Like, why get an orange "legendary" item at level 10, if you can't ever upgrade it until the end of the game anyway? Going back to pet these animals for their feathers or something became an annoying chore. The Room of Requirements in generally felt clunky and restrictive and pointless.

The story overall felt a solid C. Very stereotypical, lots of "why didn't they just do x in the first place" kinds of things. And of course, your house wins the House Cup at the end, which you can see coming from before you even start the game. This whole "50 points to here", and "taking away point here" thing is completely arbitrary and meaningless because there's no actual metric being tracked or risk of your house not winning.

The menu system was a bit clunky as well, being fairly sluggish and slow. So many challenges and collections and crummy inventory items that are constantly putting a notification item on your menus that basically are just perpetually there because who is going to waste time diving into those slow menus just to find the right thing to mouse-over in order to make the icon go away?

Finally, graphics. Overall, decent graphics, but nothing over-the-top amazing. The game seems poorly optimized, with bad framerate dips that are badly exacerbated if you try to use RayTracing. Even with a 3080Ti at 1440p, I just had to turn it off because the game would stutter so badly.

If you love Harry Potter, then you will LIKE this game, I'm sure. But when you're done, I don't think you'll be coming back ever again. The lasting impression of this game is "phew... I'm glad that's finally over."

Unfortunately, it's not great on PC. I haven't had the issues others have reported to the same degree, but it's still visibly unoptimised and it gets knocked down a few points for that reason for me.

But it's still excellent. Those rating it badly are doing so for disingenuous reasons completely unrelated to the actual video game. They can safely be ignored as the petulant crybabies they are.

Telling all the side-quest NPCs to stop whining is great. The response of the main character is perfect.

Thanks goodness for the option to hide headwear. Hats and other headwear look ugly as hell.

Still getting lots of flickering on many objects. Seems to be an issue with the game. Fixes on the internet didn't work for me. Everything is up-to-date on my end.

The game is very hungry for pc resources, even with a top tier pc.
Better optimization is definitely needed, although I didn't get any fps drops on my system running the game at 4k, 60fps capped and most settings maxed aside from RT (causes flickering).

Had to turn on V-sync on NVCP because it suffered from screen tearing.
V-sync fast or adaptive didn't work, which is sad. Had the same issue with Spider-Man Remastered, but V-sync fast fixed it.

The game seems a bit overwhelming with all the collectibles.

Voice acting on German voice-overs is a bit off on some characters (and lacking lip-sync).

Can't turn off subtitles? These captions, for example: *chuckles*, piss me off.
Why is this a thing that is forced upon you?

The names have to be a joke sometimes, for example Nigellus Black, lol?
Character design of many characters seems forced to look equal (different skin color and such). Trying to make the game not look racist, kinda brings more attention to than it should.

Some of the quests and puzzles were a bit easy and bland and does get repetitive at later stages. The main storyline is a bit short and weak while one of the side mission storylines is amazing. Dialogue is a bit weak at times and doesn't do the game any favors in immersion. Developers spent a lot of time creating the game and weren't able to implement all the features they wanted in the game. I would rather have them cut back on the Merlin Trials, Demiguise Statues, and Dungeons and spent more time on a morality system and companion system. But where the game lacks, it makes up in other areas. Exploring the world really makes you feel like you're in the Harry Potter universe, especially inside Hogwarts Castle and Hogsmeade. I spent a lot of time just running and flying around and immersing myself in all the game had to offer. The game does quite a good job of making you feel like an actual student at Hogwarts. Attending classes was quite fun and allowed for your character to learn new spells. The combat system is amazing and fun but it lacks difficulty even on hard settings.

Performance-wise, some gamers have had issues with the game, whether it's framerate issues, performance issues, or just outright game-breaking bugs, I was one of the fortunate ones that had no such issues. I was able to run the game on high settings at 1080p (on a laptop with 3050Ti, 16 GB RAM) and averaged 70-80FPS with a maximum of 120fps and a minimum of 34fps (heavy fog/battle arena). Apart from a bug, one of the field pages not registering correctly, I haven't had any other bugs in the game that I have noticed or come across.

Overall the game has been amazing and I have just completed my first playthrough as a Gryffindor and have spent just over 120 hours and will still put in a few more to get to the 100% mark. I will be doing other playthroughs as different characters from other houses, while I await for more content to be added to the game. For a developer that has never made a AAA open-world RPG, they have done quite a good job at making a game that gamers of all ages and experiences, could pick up and play without too much difficulty. I can't wait to see how they will take in all the criticism and recommendations for the game and improve on it in the future, with DLC and sequels. But I have high hopes for them and can't wait for what they have planned in the future.

Lack of roleplaying opportunities, meaning you have few choices to make and you're forced to be a very kind and polite character most of the time. The few morally gray and evil choices you get to make seem inconsistent as a result. Hogwarts and the world at large are very beautiful. The additions of a trans character, a gay married couple, and an abundance of non-white characters make no sense given the time and place of the setting. No romance options, presumably in part because the characters are "underage." Silly and disappointing. Some stuttering issues on PC but it was only mildly irritating to me.

One of the best open world games I've played since gaming started for me which was the late 70s. Remarkable achievement. I have zero interest in the franchise but really enjoyed this fantastical video game. It's up there with Witcher 3, Forbidden West and on a good PC looks incredible at Native 4K and around 100fps.

Like, even if you "acquired" it another way I feel like you'd be getting ripped off with time if not money.

Everything about it beyond the universe it takes place in is literally bog standard open world #98573-B, it could give Ubisoft a run for their money.

I'd probably feel more charitably about it if it was an outright bad game, but it just sinks into this gray space between good and bad by being entirely unremarkable if you've played even a single open world game before it. At least it came out early in the year so as to be out of the way for games that might be actually worth it and won't be bankrolling a sentient trash-bag? It's disappointing.

Technically, this game squeezed my PC hard with some stuttering. It is really hungry for both RAM and VRAM. Some optimisation might be needed still but it's a great game. Kinda makes me think back to Shadow of Mordor/Shadow of War, a surprisingly good game based on a book series but telling its own story... One thing I would add is the interactiveness of the world. Most NPCs are just window dressing but they don't even react when I cast a dangerous spell... Even in Driver San Francisco the pedestrians, while impossible to hit, would at least move out of the way and acknowledge the potential danger and that's one old game... These folk just stand there unbothered. Kinda messes up the immersion.

I like the graphics, not because it's something next-gen or it looks like cyberpunk but because it gives me a fairytale feeling.
The intro was something I didn't expect. From the first minute we have action, some kind of mystery,death..
Music which have some sounds from the films and give you some nostalgic feeling.
    Char editor is good.

    What I not like.
The npc are all the same without their own character except sebastian who has the potential to became something like mini voldemort. They are no one who will bothering us like malfoy or Snape. Everybody is ohhh the new one help me you are the only one who can do it.
The spell and how you learn them. You going to the class and you expect to something inside it not just press 1 2 buttons and learn a new skill or go do this and came back to me. If I do everything outside the school why am I going on class? Some spells are the same with a little difference and you learning them all in the first hour of the game because you need them for the stupid side quests which you need them to open skins and buff something.
The missions are the same and the whole story are boring. I played 20 hours trying to find all the chest, to find this or that or open doors to get some clothes to get some more exp for my lvl but this is useless. Clothes with bigger stats are dropped all the time. Your lvl doesn't count in battles because they are chaotic. 10 goblins are firing and teleport at you at the same time and you must press O all the time and try to levitate the half of them to can kill the other half.
    Collect animals is useless.
There is no mystery, no jokes, no hate, this is a game for kids between 12 and 18 who never played games like witcher, dragon age, skyrim or even the old HP games. BUT the kids this age doesn't know the HP universe so good like us who are 28 29 30 yo. The grow up with marvel, pubg, fortnite and tiktok. So for who is this game made for?

The open world in this game is beautiful and detailed, with great graphics and decent enough performance. Although ray tracing is completely broken, at least on my PC.

That being said apart from the visuals the world feels very empty and sterile. The characters barely deserve to be described as such, the dialogue and the a lot of the voice acting are unnatural at best and most of the side quests and even a lot of the main quests feel like chores. I get that some quests involve completing tasks for classes in the game, but if they feel about a enticing as doing literal homework back in school the developers went wrong somewhere.
Occasionally the game seems to set up what could be interconnected, branching quests with intriguing premises, only for them to resolve after getting x thing from x place with two lines of placeholder dialogue never to be mentioned again. I think a pretty good early example is a student inviting you to an illegal dueling club after you beat him in a spell duel in class. Sounds rather intriguing right? Definitely some potential for an interesting narrative here right? Except all that happens is you go there, win 3 duels against random people, have an NPC tell you that you did well and that's literally it. It's a similar story with almost every single side quest I played in the game.

The main story can best be described as straightforward and utterly unremarkable. Up to around the halfway mark you're still hoping for something to shake things up, surely some intricate plot twist is gonna unfold soon, I can't wait for the web of intrigue they're spinning to reveal itself. Unfortunately this is not the case and you eventually just resign and accept that that's simply the way the game is.
The main character also has the charisma and personality of a wet paper bag. This is further emphasized by both the female and male character's voice acting which sounds beyond phoned in. It is almost as though they were intentionally trying their hardest to not give them any sort of personality. Now if this was branching CRPG with really far reaching choices where the main character is mostly an avatar for the player to project themselves unto, I could somewhat see why they did it. In a straightforward action RPG where choices are mostly window dressing there is no excuse for it, there are just too many games that have done it better.

To some extend the game is saved by the beautiful open world and a solid combat system, but those can only get you so far and oh boy is it a slog otherwise. In a lot of ways it feels like the worst parts of the newer Assassin's Creed games with very little of the good things in them.
Overall I enjoyed my time with the game somewhat, but it's definitely the kind of game where I'd recommend watching a show on a second screen or listening to a podcast in the background while you're playing it.

The success of Hogwarts Legacy clearly shows that good sales and warm feedback from players are ensured not so much by the gameplay thought out to the smallest detail but by carefully reproducing the right atmosphere. But this is already a subtle moment, akin to real magic, and here the nameless developers of Avalanche Software succeeded.
