[Anonymous]Oct 31, 2007Poor graphics, bugs that carried over from the beta, horrible memory leaks, and boring, derivative quests and gameplay doom this one to the mire of average at best games.

LukeY.Oct 31, 2007This game is the first online game that has actually been fun since the WoW expansion. It definitely takes the Diablo concept to the next level, and the quality of the past Diablo releases has carried forward to this release.

AndyH.Oct 31, 2007Gets boring to fast. I dont like the idea of charging people either. Graphics are ok, but was looking more for an adventurous game. This game is all hack and slash and nothing else. Dont waste your money.

BrandonM.Oct 31, 2007Game is beautiful, and if you are worrying about the subscription fee. You're paying for constant "expansions" onto the game, new levels, new features and etc. They charge a subscription fee to those who chose to subscribe so that they can access new content, and be involved in other sorts of goodies.

NathanP.Oct 31, 2007If you're looking for Diablo 3, this is it. No it's not an MMO with open persistent worlds, but it is a highly addictive hack and slash treasure hunt game. Honestly, don't listen to the naysayers, if you loved Diablo 2 for years and years like I did, you'll love Hellgate London.

PeteF.Oct 31, 2007For two years I looked forward to this game. I can't remember being this disappointed in a computer game - ever. 3rd person interface is unresponsive. Bland graphics. Terrible voice acting. No story. But worst of all is having to pay $10 a month just for character slots, a 3rd difficulty, hardcore mode, and a shared stash. Electronic Arts ruined this game. What a shame.

AndrewBallingerOct 30, 2007Based on the demo alone, I have a single piece of advice to anybody considering getting this game.
Don't.
Go load up your old copy of diablo 2 / Buy a new copy of diablo 2.
Diablo 2 is a more polished and action packed game that already comes packed with a large community and lots of features. The game play is the same, only the world is much richer. -
-
MarkT.Oct 30, 2007Static and boring. You'll need good friends in order to enjoy any of this online. Subscription is a joke. Think i'll stick with Solitaire.

SteveW.Nov 1, 2007Honestly, this game is finally a decent replacement for Diablo 2, so I'm quite happy ;-). Dungeon crawling, getting rare loot, playing with friends, thats what makes this game fun. If you don't like that, you will not enjoy this game.

AndrewNov 13, 2007Flawed Diamond. Needs work still, especially multiplayer, but the core game is excellent. Playing as an Evoker (the game's high damage magic class) I regularly use almost every spell the class has, each in a different situation - not just TheBestSpell endlessly like in Diablo or Titan Quest.

ChrisC.Nov 16, 2007A fresh new perspective in to the RPG arena. Even with bugs, it has potential to be 10/10 even if there are some kinks to be worked out.
-
-
ArnoldS.Nov 17, 2007The game is almost, but not quite, fun. No amount of bug fixing/patching is gonna change the fact that: a) the skills are uninteresting compared to D2/WoW b) not enough item variety c) the maps are all too similar d) the combat is monotonous e) leveling is tedious grinding f) almost no replayabiity This game has no future. Fail. Next.

NiklasJ.Nov 2, 2007Is a very good game on paper, but unforunately, doesn't work well in practice. The gameplay is mediocare but very stiff and easily becomes boring in the long run. The graphics & sounds are acceptable but could be quite much better. The animations however, are terrible. Overall it's not a very good game unless you have a lot friends to party up with.

BillMcCoyNov 27, 2007Most blatanlty rushed piece of crap ever. No story, atmosphere, variety, or fun for that matter. FSS messed up big time. They tried to make a hybrid of an ARPG and an MMO and failed miserably.

LesH.Nov 29, 2007It was released early, but already is addictive as meth (not that I'd know). Once the bugs are fixed it'll be a 10, and adding more features would make it even better. And the final cinematics... Brilliant!

JasonE.Nov 3, 2007Anyone that is not rating this game a 10 has not playedit in a 4 person group. That's the long and short of it.

-
MCNov 3, 2007I haven't played this game yet, but, from what I've heard I have to contradict the person who said that this will be the best thing to hold us over until Diablo 3 - no, that would be called "Titan Quest" - you should check it out.
-
-
MarcoH.Nov 3, 2007A big disappointment after all those gorgeous screenshots. Art won't save ordinary graphics. There are too much recycled sets. Combats are easy and nothing special. Expensive upgrades are almost a fraud. There are also unexpected bugs and the interface is poorly implemented. Doesn't deserve all those fishy biased "10" rating :(

caffeinatedNov 8, 2007Buggy, unfinished and lacking in necessary information. Poorly designed UI, chat and grouping mechanics. Has fun moments, but you have to put up with too much unpleasantness to get to the fun. Needs a lot of work.

GregD.Oct 26, 2007Poor graphics. Derivative gameplay. No respecs. Subscription plan is an absolute disaster. Paying $10 a month for the third difficulty level, hardcore mode, shared stash, and character slots is an outrage. This is not an MMO. There is no persistent world. They are trying to charge $10 a month for a Diablo 2 clone. That is absurd.

JackJ.Oct 31, 2007Disappointed. I almost never buy a game without trying it and I'm regretting it now for sure. This game is so mindless and dull. I was expecting action packed combat based off the trailers, and this game is nothing like that. It's just left-click, left-click, left-click again til all the monsters are gone. You seriously have to be horrible if you enjoy this.
-
-
DravenS.Oct 31, 2007Not that great of a game. I was in the Beta. The fixes they said would be coming never came in the retail. They left out some of the things in the game during beta that made it stand out. I cancelled my pre-order because of the lack of content for subscribers and the lack of general good game items for non-subscribers.
-
-
TimW.Oct 31, 2007Excellent graphics and gameplay for the genre. Subscription based is no problem, WoW already proved that. This game is definetely worth it. its not an MMO, of course, its a game you play not "live in". AWESOME GAME!!!
-
-
JoeP.Oct 31, 2007Nothing new or really fancy, but a fun game nonetheless. Good replay value, and it scratches that Diablo 2 itch well. Sure, the graphics aren't incredible, but that allows those of us who have poorer machines to play the game. The classes are good, but the near mandatory subscription is not cool.

RobertP.Oct 31, 2007Gameplay is fun and addictive and provides a feeling that your character actually means something to the world, unlike games like WoW and Guild Wars. Add in good graphics(if sometimes to similiar in color palettes) and simplistic but deep controls, this is a must buy for PC gamers.

ndNov 12, 2007Game didn't even come close to it hype and the devs relied on "WE R DIABLO2 MAKERS LOLZZZ!" to sell their game and it ended up pretty crappy. Game has maximum 40 hours of play time and 0 replayability. Is 40 hours worth the 50$? Up to you.

-
AnonyA.Nov 13, 2007Just paid good money for a load of crap... Don't waste your money... here is why... Do you know the FPS feeling of HL2 - well this game does not have it.... it feels more like a proto type... like the game is actually less playable than HL1. Also as for the RPG nature... what good is it, if the general playability of the game is so crap... can't believe I wasted my money.

-
JohnH.Nov 13, 2007Technical flaws aside, I think this is a great game with lots to offer. The weapons and skills are both usefull and fun to use, though what it lacks is story. But if you remember Diablo 2, the story wasnt anything to hurray for but it was still fun for years! This game is much like it but better.

Nov 7, 2014It should have been so much better! All the components in this game are solid however the game never comes together to create an experience as good as Diablo 2 or similar. There is still great potential in this game and it is still fun to play as a curiosity peice.
-
-
Jul 30, 2020very interesting game, like Diablo 2, solid balance. I highly recommend it. 8.5

Jun 20, 2020Really enjoyable game - could do with a remaster on consoles. Nice mix of action with rpg lite.

PC GamerIt doesn't redefine the action RPG, but in a genre laden with derivative games, Hellgate is a refreshing concoction that's likely to have enduring appeal. [Dec 2007, p.48]
-
You might get sucked into the online world of competing slayers and level grinding for a while, but the tedium will kill you far quicker than any member of Hell's vast.
-
Pelit (Finland)Hellgate: London takes the elements that made the Diablo series classic, and puts them in new, invigorating setting of demonic threat, dark magic and high technology. The fresh world of Hellgate: London is its greatest asset, but sadly the game fails in capitalizing it properly, with quite shoddy plot and generic missions outside the main story. Nevertheless, Hellgate: London is a good action RPG with plenty to enjoy. How the multiplayer system works when the game hits stores will ultimately determine the staying power of the game. [Nov 2007]
