While it won't appeal to every shooter fan out there, Hell Let Loose's complex interplay of FPS action and real-time tactical planning rewards communication, coordination, and genuine leadership in a way few other games even attempt.

Hell Let Loose is a great World War shooter that reliably pursues the middle ground between action and strategy.

Hell Let Loose is a deeply immersive and really clever World War II shooter, when played with a good team on a good server.

Although Hell Let Loose can undoubtedly be improved in some aspects, the prerequisites for long-time fun are all there, as long as you’re looking for a war simulator full of immersion, action, strategy and collaboration. Black Matter's WWII is harsh and unforgiving, but also stunning in its depiction of war.

Hell Let Loose can be frustrating and impenetrable. But it rewards perseverance, commitment and trust with a compelling experience not replicated anywhere else.

Not every game or genre needs to appeal to every gamer. Hell Let Loose is built for hardcore multiplayer shooter fans with a desire to move away from the casual and sometimes irrelevant teamwork that makes easier games well, easier. Hell Let Loose demands commitment, cooperation, and enough patience to learn the game through several hours of painful, frequent death and have a genuine willingness to contribute to a squad instead of being a lone hero. Meet these requirements and you’re in for a singular and memorable battlefield simulation.

Hell Let Loose stands somewhere in the middle between truly authentic WWII shooters and their more casual-leaning counterparts. It’s not without faults, but the team behind it works tirelessly to expunge them all.

If players are looking for a quick fix of World War Two shooting action, then Hell Let Loose won't be for them. The pace, length, and harsh combat conditions dictate that players dedicate themselves to teamwork and victory. If players are willing to communicate over voice, work together to achieve local and broader objectives, and have the patience to play slowly, Hell Let Loose can be amazing. It may not happen every session, but a full game of Hell Let Loose with a dedicated, communicative teams is a must-experience gaming moment for any fans of tactical shooters.

Despite a very challenging start to the game, Hell Let Loose delivers a near-unparalleled experience as a gritty, hardcore WW2 shooter. With a deep layer of big-picture strategy and maps that perfectly capture the devastation of war, there are few games in the genre that bring so much to the blood-soaked table.

Hell Let Loose is not a game for everyone and it is very likely that those looking only for a shooter set in the Second World War may not appreciate it. It is in fact a product designed exclusively for a hardcore audience that is not afraid of the long times that elapse between one death and another and that cannot be categorized as a simple first-person shooter. Hell Let Loose is an experience that aims to recreate situations as similar as possible to those of a real conflict and this involves a slow and reasoned approach that is in stark contrast to other modern productions, which focus everything on immediacy and chaos. If you're ready to turn a blind eye to some annoying glitches and that's the kind of simulation you're looking for, then you might find hours and hours of fun with your most trusted teammates in Hell Let Loose.

Now, getting to the main question that you would probably ask: “Is Hell Let Loose worth the price?” Well, it depends. If you are a patient gamer against minor bugs and issues, and you love hardcore games, then you should get it. On the other hand, if you think you might not like the realism of the game or you don’t have any squads, then you’d better wait for a free weekend opportunity or a discount on the price.

Hell Let Loose is a fun and accessible introduction to milsims, but I miss the complexity.

Ultimately, Hell Let Loose is a hardcore shooter in every sense of the word. Though it’s very easy to get discouraged at the beginning, those committed to seeing it through will likely have a great time. Though the niche focus won’t appeal universally, providing you know what you’re getting in for, anyone after a tougher World War II shooter would do well to take a look.

Hell Let Loose keeps fine balance between realism and action: it’s inclined towards hardcore gameplay, but adepts of run’n’gun style won’t feel useless either. [Early Access review - Issue#242, p.52]
  2. All in all, Hell Let Loose is another typical World War II first-person shooter in the sea of the genre. Although there is nothing special about the title to make it stand out, it offers hectic 100-man battles on historically accurate locations with tremendous attention to visual and audio detail. Does it deliver all this without flaw? No, not exactly.

DOA. Worst development of any game, on par with Dayz. Team17 (publisher and developer)(makes those 2d arcade worms games by the way) does notDOA. Worst development of any game, on par with Dayz. Team17 (publisher and developer)(makes those 2d arcade worms games by the way) does not care about history or it's $220k kickstarter who supported a historically realistic ww2 experience. Battle of Stalingrad includes all: g43,stg44,ppsh,mg42, panther and tiger tank. None of which existed in early war 1942 eastern front, and does not follow reality/history. So now it's an arcade shooter and the originally target player base is driven away by console casuals as the devs shift their focus on releasing a console port. Who announces a console port during early access? When the base game is painfully neglected, they create microtransactions for skins and shiny spawns. They don't fix their own game and they just mask new content to grab the next fish when so many have dried out. 1 million copies sold and 3k average playerbase says it all. Full Review »

The people saying this game is dead are lying to you just as flagrantly as the people claiming the game runs horribly (I never drop below myThe people saying this game is dead are lying to you just as flagrantly as the people claiming the game runs horribly (I never drop below my FPS cap on max settings, must just be me right? Totally buy that one guys.) for everyone who plays it. This game is wonderful, it's one of the few games of its kind (tactical FPS / light infantry MILSIM sort of deal, squad based) that has AAA level visuals and stunning graphics. Yes, this game certainly has more of an arcade influence than a game like Squad.. but if you want Squad but WW2 go play the game literally made in the same engine / framework called Post Scriptum which is also great. HLL manages to have just enough arcade elements to make the game easier to pick up without going overboard and becoming too friendly like a game such as Enlisted. It strikes a wonderful balance and I applaud it for that, I have other games for mainlining tactical realism and nothing else.

That being said, the game is still very immersive and pretty realistic. Gunplay is quite solid and on the skill based side. Properly utilizing your class / role is everything and charging into the battle like it's Battlefield will just get you killed and hurt your team. Running proper logistics and placing garrisons in the right place can literally decide games. Support and Engineer are unsung heroes. This game has all of that going and more as it's still getting content, so you have nothing to really scoff at here.

If you want hardcore, intense WW2 infantry combat with light to moderate inclusion of armor and vehicles over large maps containing 50 vs. 50 medium scale battles that place a high focus on squad level operations and people playing their role and communicating.. but with a fair but not intrusive or overwhelming arcade influence to make it all a bit more digestible.. then HLL is the game for you and more. There's thousands playing at any given time and the game is growing, so please do come join us on the battlefields of the past and enlist now.
