Slow Bros.' game combines charming claymation and meticulous craftsmanship with a bold, yet potentially divisive gameplay approach that reflects its protagonist's mundane life and emphasizes narrative over action. Despite losing its focus and reducing interactivity over time, its captivating characters and thought-provoking themes create an unforgettable audiovisual experience for some, while others may find it tedious.

Harold Halibut is a curious fish, using its retro-futuristic, painstakingly handcrafted world and cast of weird but relatable characters to tell a heartfelt but ambling, puzzle-free story that’s (in the best way) more soap opera than space opera.

There are some great moments in Harold of Halibut, even if it takes a while to get going, and the art style is stunning in every way.

Harold Halibut's world and the people that inhabit it were literally crafted by people that cared about him and his story. And while that story struggles under the weight of its ambitions, the human touches on every part of it are evident. Those are the heart and soul of the game, and they imprinted on me too.

If you’re expecting more action and puzzles, then boy, you might bounce right off this one once you’ve finished gawking at how pretty it all is. My advice? Take it slow, and enjoy every moment with this bizarre and eccentric cast of characters. Games like Harold Halibut don’t come around very often.

Harold Halibut has an impressive story and art style, but it lacks the strong gameplay hooks to keep all but the most patient players engaged.

Harold Halibut is a stop motion narrative adventure, whose childish story weighed down by a rhythm that is too heavy and its practically non-existent gameplay, lacking any spark, fails to live up to the work of craftsmanship that is its stop motion graphics.

Audiovisually enchanting adventure on a submerged spaceship with likeable characters, which is not entirely convincing in terms of narrative and has little depth in terms of gameplay.

A visually arresting, warm-hearted tale of a gofer searching for his purpose, Harold Halibut flounders amongst endless fetch-quests and waffle.

Harold Halibut makes some key compromises to make its eye-popping claymation art style work.

Harold Halibut’s narrative, setting and visuals are so wonderful and creative from a sci-fi perspective, it’s an enormous shame it’s housed within such a one-note and heartbreakingly boring video game.

A great artstyle and flashes of brilliance never truly make up for a meandering, risk-averse plot.

Harold Halibut overstays its welcome like a free diver that descends too far. Its painfully boring gameplay consists of walking back and forth as the story unhurriedly transpires. Still, the oddball characters and sublime stop-motion aesthetics may hook a few gamers who are happy to wade in the shallows.

Sharper humour would have helped make these folk more endearing to us, too. [Issue#397, p.108]

Ultimately, Harold Halibut’s abundance of charm doesn’t translate to the game being charming, and in the end, while there’s plenty to see here, there’s just nothing to do.

Looking at the Slow Bros.' game, it's hard not to associate it with The Neverhood, but these are just appearances. A bland protagonist, almost complete lack of gameplay, and - on top of that - a huge amount of bugs make Harold Halibut a fish that's very hard to digest.

Harold Halibut shoots for the moon, and (despite missing its target) lands amongst the stars. In an industry that progressively takes fewer and fewer risks, it is a breath of fresh air to see Slow Bros. take such a big swing. I hope this game encourages more developers to push visual and artistic boundaries in the future. Even if Harold Halibut isn’t for me, I have to respect its vision.
  2. The ending is a good payoff to a sweet story, with plenty of chuckles and surprises along the way.
