Hand of Fate 2 improves on its solid predecessor, but it's a couple of cards from a royal flush.

Probably best reserved for the most diehard fans, but even they should enter with caution.

The sequel of Hand of Fate convinced us that its unique mix of card game and real-time combat could be more than a one-shot gimmick, though it still has a long road to achieve an even quality across all its areas. The card side of the game may be vastly improved, but the real-time combat is the part that is still quite underwhelming. Hopefully in the next iteration we'll see the combat receiving the same attention as the card side of the game.

The art style, music, and core gameplay offers players a unique gaming experience unavailable elsewhere. Lady Luck isn’t always kind, however, and when combined with the occasional graphical issue, unwanted frustrations arise. Despite its flaws, it’s still worth the effort for those with patience and determination.

Hand of Fate 2 captures some old-school RPG charm, but deals a few too many bad cards in the process. The game’s appealing premise is marred by unsatisfying progression, punishing randomness, and clunky combat. Nostalgic RPG fans will find things to appreciate here, but given the popularity and diversity of actual tabletop gaming these days, it’s hard to fully recommend the half-stacked Hand of Fate 2.

  1. A bigger, better game than its predecessor in almost every respect, and one with a sense of journey and surprise to its gambling, fighting and dying, which makes it feel rather like a card-based, fantasy FTL. However, it has thrown out its most beautiful, meanest-eyed baby with the bath water in order to achieve that variety. Hand of Fate 2 wisely switches away from Hand Of Fate’s purity, which saves it from repetition but discards its trump card in the process.

A board made of cards, deck building, resource management. handling inventories. It all comes together in a satisfying package. I played for 8 hours after it was released and wanted to keep playing. The combat is a weak part of the game and unlike in 2015 I've played a lot more games with the countering mechanic that have done it much better. They could have innovated this aspect more. It is more of the same as last game with improvements. There are some silly ragdoll physics when you kill enemies and some of the minigames are more about RNG than skill but it is one of the few single player games that keeps me coming back and playing for hours on end.
