Half-Life: Opposing Force was a brief (but in my opinion just-right) expansion for the classic FPS Half-Life. The graphics are dated, but if you are a Half-Life fan, you should definitely give it a try. It's not as good as Half-Life itself, but it comes close. HL: Blue Shift is another good one. Give them a try if you're a Half-Life fan.

This was an amazing game............almost two decades ago. Don't expect so much from this game, as it can't really be compared to modern games. It's was revolutionary a long time ago and it set the standard for the fps games for a long time, but in this day and age it is nothing more than a decent game that didn't age very well.....

The story is fantastic, showing a different perspective. Instead of being the protagonist Gordon Freeman, you now take place as an antagonist known as Adrian Shepard. Moving on the the multi player, it is insanely fun. The excessive amount of explosions going on around you is an exciting add-on to this game. With servers still running eleven years later, this game is fantastic. Don't think that Opposing Force lacks a cooperative mode, because one Coop server is currently running with a maximum slot of 32 players per match.

Overall, this game is a splendid masterpiece and I would recommend anyone buying. It's a ten dollars worth spending on a game such as this one.

This game was almost as good as the original Half Life. There's a whole new side of the story to explore, and what happens to Black Mesa after Gordon Freeman leaves for Xen. Also, the new protagonist and huge selection of weapons make Opposing Force feel more like an actual game than an expansion pack.

My favorite of the original Half Life and it's expansions. It's a unique spin on the traditional add-on where you play through the original campaign path from the military's view point. Less box puzzles and more squad based combat make this a more straightforward shooter but still stands strong as a fantastic expansion.

Graphics is not great, but it's cool enough and the level design with brilliant color schemes and lighting styles makes up for it.

Music sets the mood nicely, especially dynamic themes when something serious is going down.

    Bad and stupid.

That it was made by a third party company rather than Valve bleeds right through. Weird, confusing plot, until someone explains it I think it breaks canon. Dumb gameplay additions; There are way too many new weapons, which makes the gunplay unfocused, and the barnacle grappling gun is not only very poorly implemented (it is only used about 7 times in the entire game),

    Dumb gameplay additions;
There are way too many new weapons, which makes the gunplay unfocused, and the barnacle grappling gun is not only very poorly implemented (it is only used about 7 times in the entire game), but is a stupid idea in itself.
The new monsters go unexplained why Gordon never encounters them.
Most of the security guards are fat, because security guards, amirite lolxd?
The military squad feature is glitched to hell, as there were several times when I was shot and killed by them because I was "in the way", and they mostly get killed within 30 seconds of real combat.
The enemy AI is completely broken, which is very apparent in open areas where they can stand completely still while you shoot their brains out, and when they try and chase you through labyrinth areas, where everyone seems to forget about you.
The rope physics are pretty cool, but climbing ropes feel pretty awkward, and the ropes sometimes spaz out.
Most of the puzzles are arbitrary, and/or stupid, with the ending boss being one of the dumbest boss fights that I can recall.
The only moment that I really liked was the ending sequence, which gave some needed closure for the Black Mesa chapter of the Half-Life saga, and was overall pretty good

While it had it's moments, it is dreadfully bad most part. Stay away unless you really, really would rather pay 4.99€ and 5 hours of your life, rather than just read the storyline on the Half-Life wiki.

An excellent expansion for an excellent game. It's like Half-Life but with unspeakable amounts of added spice. There's so much content that this almost qualifies to be its own game and not an expansion. Gearbox worked wonders here. In many ways, it surpasses the original Half-Life itself.

In their attempt to make HL more action orientated Gearbox added a ton of new weapons and enemies to fight as well as a handful of memorable bosses. To be honest I would have been happy with any amount of extra HL content luckily OpFor clocked in at just under eight hours for me, not quite as long as HL but certainly a hefty bit of content considering its original and even more so current price. A great expansion pack to the main game . Worth playing even to this day ( same i say with goldeneye for n64) , very fun to witness the events from a different point of view. Just long enough. Just hard enough, great level design. Good weapon variety and enemy variety.
The only minor complaint is arguably the aiming. While the aiming works, sometimes the autoaim is a hindrance.
However a great fps game. And while fps isnt my fav genre , sometimes fps , especially when the fps is good and hard they tend to stick with me. Like this game , moh frontline, nolf, golden eye, perfect dark etc.

It also has its shortcomings. In the training level you learn how to lead and command your own squad, but this barely gets utilized in the actual game and when it does the squad becomes more of a burden than a help because the A.I. is horrible. Also towards the last few levels you end up with so many weapons in your arsenal that you can't decide what to use when in a pinch.

As mention just before, you play as a soldier, so... at first you might think that it will be a "walk in the park" tons of weapons and ammo, but no... ammo is scars here, and enemies are much more relentless, in the original Half-Life the opposing force enemies were like bullet sponges, manage to handle multiple shots, but now, the black ops are much worse, they can handle even more harm, and they are more accurate, female black ops members are way to fast, it can be really hard to take them down. Opposing force introduces new enemy alien types and 3 new weapons, but still ammo is almost a luxury and enemies can handle multiple shots, basically... every bullet counts.
The level design still very amazing, Gearbox really knew what they ere doing, still, most of the environments are indoors, but the overall design and lighting makes the levels really sharp and impressive, as for platformer sections, they still present in the game, but they are less common.
The story is the least important factor in this expansion, it felt like a generic military shooter, and... it is. For the game's length, it's short... kind off... it took me about 4 hrs to beat, including the times were i constantly got killed, i believe that it is short, but you can beat it in less time if you have already played it multiple times.
It is fun to play... it is a bit more challenging, but once you finish it you will feel good, just don't play it if you are looking for a good story because you will not find it here.

Expand

Half-life opposing force is a spin off the to ever popular and praised half life series, and it takes the perspective of a soldier on his way to attack black messa. and for a game thats 20 years old its aged really well like its predicessor.

Story: i will admit i dont remember the main characters name( not that it really matters) but you are a soldier sent to help "clean up " black messa but your air craft is attacked before you make it and you are saved by gman who guides you to where you are meant to be, Gman being more of a direct influence on the player than in the first half life being more of a back ground character and after the way the first half life went i think this was a smart decision , extend the lore more as well as characters. you fond out that at the end of half life when gordon jumps into the portal you play as the soldier who tried to stop him as he jumps witch is cool, the story was really good and im certainly not doing it justice the way im writing but it was good so ill just number value it.
    Story: 9/10

World building: the world building and the story here are so intertwined its hard to separate them at this point because they blend so well. this entire game is just for world building. revisiting areas from the first game with a different perspective was a good idea and easily could have made the game feel lazy but it didn't . it felt familiar yet different the way a new perspective should.
    World building: 8/10

Graphics: i mean it looks the same as half life 1 it looks good BUT aged so not really much more to say that i havent said about half life
    Graphics: 7.5/10

Gameplay: its a lot more sneaking around with some new guns AND A DESERT EAGLE :O i found where gamers obsession with the desert eagle started with this game , Thanks gear box. the game plays like half life with a few improvements and seems to have more of a heavy handed approach to combat , as a different person would have a different strategy witch i enjoyed
    Gameplay: 8/10

Sound design: the deagle sounds good and thats all this game needed to do to be memorable for its sound, but g man takes a more central roll so we get to hear his weird speech patterns and thats always a good thing
    sound design: 7/10

    9+8+7.5+8+7= 39.5
    39.5/5=7.9/10

A great expansion to the first game and a great addition to the half life mythos.

Yes, the expansions mimic the original narrative - Blast Pit / Pit Worm, final boss head shoot / belly shoot in the portal here, Nihilant spawning creatures / the green abomination spawning them too. However, Shepard's story shows the whole situation from a different angle, adding new elements (race X) and loads of other stuff (weaponary, half of which is seldom used). Anyways, for the time it was released it was awesome. And it is still awesome. Waiting for the remake!

I will check how this updated one look now.

    Pros.:
    - As in HL they updated sounds, looks of weapons, some models.
    - The pace looks faster now.
    - Better resolutions I guess.
    - Units move better than before. Before they would go into fire or just stop occasionally. Now, it feels more stable.

    Cons.:
    - By default there are glitches - mouse, elevators (being stuck after the loading screen).
    - Clanky moves of the NPCs when they talk to you.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. G-Man Shephard'a Black Mesa'nın bir "utanç" olduğunu ve "şu an kendi kendisi ile ilgilendiğini" söyler, G-Man bunu söyledikten sonra Black Mesa'yı yok eden patlamanın sesi gelir. Half-Life'ta bunlar yoktu, varsa bile daha azdı diye hatırlıyorum. Half-Life Opposing Force, Half-Life'ı sevenler için biçilmiş kaftan. Expand

Don't get me wrong; i love how Opposing Force likes to play new tricks on you and it's a brilliant experience but it leaved me not only confused but unsatisfied. To be honest, i don't want to focus too much on this issue but halfway through the game, it really shows itself. After some point, i started questioning the legality of the decisions that Gearbox software made while making this game but putting those things away, Opposing is a solid game. The pacing is well-balanced and the script is tightly written like the original Half-Life. We, as Adrian Shepherd visit more interesting places from Black Mesa that open more story elements from the original game and integrate the plot. The soundtrack is a bit lacking compared to the original Half-Life but hey, who am i to talk about audio and soundtrack. In the end, Opposing Force ia mature and solid expansion to the Half-Life yet it's plotting doesn't match the one from the original game. I recommend buying and playing this game to every Half-Life fan that enjoyed the original experience. My final score: 8.5/10

Adrian Shepherd, the protagonist of the game, deals with different threats than of the Gordon Freeman's, making this expansion has its own tone and vibe, unfortunately Opposing force doesn't teach us something new or interesting as it's going through the same story bits. I was baffled at how humanity can be so decisive and destructive in the original game and i learned that there's is no right or wrong, everything has its own moral ambiguity that you need to understand and choose based on, Opposing Force is telling the same story but with new mechanics. Opposing Force may not have something mind-blowing for the thirsty Half-Life or video game fans out there but it offers a more unique take on the original game that sometimes, even surpasses the original in Level Design, pacing and action set-piece departments.

This is a mini review of the Half-Life expansion , Opposing Force.

The game tells a side story where the player impersonates Adrian Shephard, one of the military with the task of eliminating the Black- Mesa project and everyone in it. The game itself is an expansion of the original Half-Life, same graphics, slightly improved voice acting but with localization bugs throughout the game, a rather long story for the price of the expansion, and a rather large variety of levels and weapons. The real strength of this expansion is the variety it grants players compared to the original game, granting several special weapons compared to the original game. As mentioned above, the main problem I encountered concerns the voice acting, which often changes from English to Italian during gameplay, without an in-game option to change the language.
Overall a great expansion of the game that grants a couple of hours of playthrough.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great expansion for Half-Life.

Half-Life: Opposing Force is a great expansion for the main game. It changes the perspective of the events going on in the Half-Life story and offers a nice piece of extra story.

In this game, you play as Adrian Shephard, a US marine from the HECU force, one of the main enemies from the original Half-Life. You and your buddies are sent to murder everything and everyone that has involvement with the Black Mesa facility. You fly in a helicopter with your squad mates on your way to the Black Mesa facility, but your ride is attacked by flying alien forces and the helicopter crashes, killing a lot of your team mates. You make your way to the extraction point, only to receive the middle finger from G-Man, who forces the extraction craft to leave without you.

You quickly discover that the aliens outnumber you and your fellow soldiers a thousand times to one. To make matters worse, a second alien race hits the scene, called Race X, causing even more trouble and struggles. To top it off, because the battle is going bad against the invaders, a new military force, called Black Operations, is trying to contain the situation by eliminating everyone and everything involved in the Black Mesa project. This also includes the HECU force, which was sent to contain the situation in the first place.

You battle your way through Race X aliens, Black Operations forces and try to disarm the nuclear bomb that the Black Operations are trying to launch to wipe out everything and everyone. You eventually reach the launch device and disable it, but good old G-Man reactivates it again. The final battle is, again, a giant mix between Race X aliens, Black Operations forces and in the end, some unholy abomination that is guarding and blocking off the new portal that spawns the Racer X aliens. You murder the hell out of the beast and are immediately teleported to G-man, who congratulates you, sets of the nuclear device and transports you to “a place safe, where you can tell no one what happened and where he cannot be harmed.

It is as shady as ever and I loved it. You even see a moment where Gordon goes into the original portal to confront the Nihilanth, tying the game and this expansion together. The moral here is also excellent. You are sent to kill everyone that has something to do with the Black Mesa Project but are ultimately kind of forced to team up with the security personnel and scientists to increase your chances of survival against the aliens.

Half-Life: Opposing Force plays in the same style as the original Half-Life. The only exception is that you do not have a fancy suit this time and are left with your good old military wits and weapons. You are aided frequently in the many battles in the game by fellow soldiers, scientists and security personnel, giving you the feeling that you do this together (until they are all killed off). There are new weapons in the game like the sniper rifle and the combat knife, which were a nice addition to the game. I loved the sniper rifle, it felt accurate and brutal to use.

In terms of graphics, sound and controls, it is all just as good as the original Half-Life. After playing Half-Life Source, I needed a moment to adjust again to the blend water detail and the stiffer physics, but I adapted soon enough again.

Besides the excellent new campaign, Half-life: Opposing Force also introduced new multiplayer elements. The new weapons in the expansion are now usable in deathmatch games and there are new maps available. It also features a new game mode, capture the flag and a power up system.

My only “issue” with the game was that it was a little on the short side. This is however not that much of a deal because it is an expansion and not a sequel.

In the end, Half-Life: Opposing Force is an excellent expansion for the main game,
and I can only praise it.

Although short, this is a Half-Life game. The universe is enough. Play and tell people to play. New weapons, new levels, new enemies.

Opposing Force expands on Half-Life's brilliance with new weapons, enemies, and a gripping story. A must-play for fans of the series.

Really good, hunt down the freeman but actually good?? Nice seeing the soldiers not killing the Black Mesa scientists.

Opposing Force is a very nice addition to the Half-Life-Universe although it being shorter and less groundbreaking than the first game. Nevertheless it's a must have for fans of the franchise. Thank you Gearbox!
