    Best VR game, its cant be described by words how awesome this game and how beautifull it is. It have all: story, puzzles (even too much by my opinion), shooting, horror parts, stealth parts and its look like complete solid game and not like tech demo or separated levels. Its awesome, games like this is a revolution and by them game industry getting better. Thanx valve

    First game in VR that is not just a gimmick but is actually a proper game great gameplay and storyline. game of the eon hands down. Valve did it again, and I hope they actually make more this time. This is one of the best experiences I've have on a videogame.

    it is what Avatar was for the movies. My expectation was high. It blow it! maybe it's cause i own a rtx 3080 card and a reverb G2.
    But dawn this game is crazy. To be honest; it have more inpact on gaming than the legendary Super mario bros( For Me ). Hope every gamers experience it in there life sometime. i know it's not possible right now for everybody. But guys...those guys are just genius.

    The Game offers a really immersive gameplay, accompanied with the Best Graphics i have seen in any video Game, audio design is one of the best i have heard, a truly amazing experience and a must play for half life fans and players that are going to play a half life game for the First time.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game. it takes a while to get really started but the Story is amazing. It has plenty of believable horror aspects that will leave you shaking. A lot of the review bombs are from people who don't own a VR headset and are triggered by the lack of WASD (btw there are mods for this! but I don't recommend it because it ruins some parts of the games) Although it is a prequal it is incredibly important to the story of half-life and isn't really a prequal. Some people complain that the FPS is generic but they haven't really played for very long and near the end it gets really exciting and once you start fighting with the combine it gets even better and that's in the middle of the game. Also the reason that you have been disappointed that it wasn't half-life 3 is that you would be disappointed if it WAS half-life 3 as Mark Laid law spilled all the beans for the story and now there is no excitement for half-life 3. Half-life Alyx fixes this and even paves the way for a sequel to HL:2 Ep 2.

    Now i know its VR but i dont want a normal half life gamed anymore tbh. just give us hl 3 and i think finish the story with it. dont make it a milking series like assasins creed and such.

    Watching other people play this game for the first time (I like dropping them in somewhere in the middle of chapter 2) is almost as fun as playing the game yourself. Half Life Alyx is a jaw dropping, gut wrenching, hopelessly entertaining experience. Simply put, it's ahead of it's time. An utter masterpiece of fiction. Get vr, if only for this game. It's worth it.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This is by far the best game I have ever played. Period. The environments look better than anything I have ever seen before, the storytelling is awesome as always, and every little detail has been accounted for. It's evident that Valve has spent a long time working on this game, and all of that work has paid off. It's fun to look around for resin, which you can use to upgrade your weapons, along with ammunition and health. It's no fun if you run out of ammo because your options become very limited due to the lack of melee combat. You can pick up things and throw them at enemies for a small amount of damage to be dealt, but it isn't very good. If you own a VR headset and a VR-ready PC, buy this game right now and play it. You won't regret it. Even on a lower-end PC, the game looks really good. Do not buy a VR headset and a PC solely for this game. Only do that if you're absolutely sure you want to invest in VR. I can't stress that enough. All of the negative reviews saying "WHY IS IT VR WHERE IS GORDON WAAAAH" don't understand at all. The puzzles are only capable of being done in VR. And Gordon is currently held in stasis by G-Man, as this takes place before HL 2. Plus, it's called Half-Life: Alyx. You can't expect Gordon to be there. (PS: Gordon IS in the game.) These negative reviews are all whining about how it isn't the HL they know, but they can't be serious. Sometimes they even say how "expensive" it is to play when you can get a VR headset for as low as $150 nowadays, and you don't even need that much of a PC. The minimum specs are a GTX 1060/RX 580, a Core i5-7500/Ryzen 5 1600, and 12 GB of RAM. Those altogether (including a headset) are ~$1400. And I doubt that they don't at least have a system that is close to this that doesn't require as many replacement parts. These people are quite literally stuck in the past and can't seem to grasp how this game is a prequel and isn't supposed to be HL 3. I'm sorry for critiquing those people in this way, but they're not giving this game a chance at all. Somebody even said that the game "looks like they took 2004's Half-Life 2... but in VR." Did some of these people even bother to play the game for more than 30 minutes?… Expand

    Played it on quest 2 and rtx 2060. I have bought the headset just to play this game and it worth every penny. Amazing game, especially if you are into the previous half life titles. It is a bit scary, fun and a revolutionary as a true half life.

The graphics are superb, even though it is a pity that my vr glasses (occulus rift s) doesn't allow for better graphics. The gameplay is easy to comprehend and get used to, but don't fool yourself thinkingHalf-Life Alyx is without a doubt the best VR game so far.     The best VR game I've played.
    Most VR games think it's acceptable to only last around 2 hours but this is a decently long game, even for flatscreen games. Most players seem to find it scary, which I did not (apart from one section). It was engrossing and I recommend it to anybody that has a good enough PC to play it.

    I bought a Quest 2, I bought this game, and now I believe 110% in this technology and medium. Starting with the story, I played all Half-Life games for the first time, for a month, before diving in this part. I was constantly amazed by how    I was extremely sceptical about VR generally and about how great Half-Life as a franchise is, not to mention the divine status that Alyx earned.

    I bought a Quest 2, I bought this game, and now I believe 110% in this technology and medium.

    Starting with the story, I played all Half-Life games for the first time, for a month, before diving in this part. I was constantly amazed by how interesting and deep the lore went with its universe, and Alyx makes no exception to this aspect - characters are believable, locations have atmosphere, depth and realism to them, and how it all connects to the previous entries is done masterfully.
    In the graphics department, the game deserves a score higher than a 10. Although it has a more "painty" style, like Dishonored for example, it retains the visual fidelity and feel of Half-Life, and I was constantly amazed by the presented vistas. Physics are fantastic, animations are truly life-like, you'll forget about reality with this game.
    In the sound department, it's even better. Music is memorable and adds a punch to every situation, dialogue is good, sound design is better than ever, from the zombies' cries in a dark tunnel, to a headcrab's hissing, to the Combine soldiers speaking to you and among themselves.
    And of course, the gameplay - the gameplay is like nothing you've played before and nothing like you'll play anytime soon. Puzzles and hidden stuff aplenty, combat and gun mechanics that will get you addicted and searching for them in any other game, great variety of levels and mechanics.

    It's simply a must buy, a must play, and it's the reason I've registered on Metacritic to write a review for it. And words can't explain how good this experience is.    … Expand

    Do yourself a favor, it is worth to buy a VR headset just for this game (sell the headset later if no other VR game interest you)

    The Story and especially world-building is (as always for Half-Life) almost perfect, even if in the first few chapters there is not much going on in our main storyline. This, like many other decisions like it, could however be seen as a strategic choice by Valve in order to slowly introduce Players to VR and even Half-Life itself (as it will be the case for many players since the last Half-LIfe is 13 years old).

    The best VR game ever. The storytelling and puzzles are out of this world. It's a lot of horror and the game gives me anxiety but I'm also living actually inside the world, fighting against the monsters and the combine. I have never gotten such experience in any other game.

    This game is Incredible. I bought Valve index just because of this masterpiece, Somehow Valve makes this game looks too good in VR. The game looks phenomenal that sometime i fogot it's a VR game lol, it even looks better than many flat games. The Audio and physics system are great too.

    What a beautiful way to return in this legendary franchise! Such an immersive gameplay that couldn't be possible without VR. I'm happy they tried this option out, despite all the critics saying they ruined it with the VR stuff. Audiovisual masterpiece with heartwarming ending for a long time fan. That's a serious 10/10 from me! Can't wait to give it a another go wireless with Quest 3.

    Its a visually stunning, new look at the Half Life world. Its got everything half life had in terms of storytelling, and the VR is done really well. Maybe lay off (or improve on the VR hologram puzzles) Please can we have some more Mr Gabe. Soon. Like not 3 years. Or maybe portal 3 VR. Yes..     A great follow up to the well known series. The game not only employs many mechanisms exclusive to VR, looks extremely great, but also remembers that the main hook of this franchise are well written characters and interesting storyline. I'm eagerly waiting for the next installment.

    No, it doesn't reinvent the wheel, no, it's not perfect (but then, I think, that's not entirely possible with current gen VR headsets), but it shows what's possible with the current gen and pushes VR game quality to a new level.
    Also, it brought us a new story in the HL universe and promises even more.
    So, I give it 9 out of 10.

    I give a 9 out of 10 considering it's a VR-game and my gosh, what game it is. The moment the game loads up and you stand on the balcony overlooking the city was already enough for me to know, this is a work of passion. The feeling of the city is just right. Every object in it feels credible, the sounds, the atmosphere, even the graphics are the best I encountered in a VR game. So far,I give a 9 out of 10 considering it's a VR-game and my gosh, what game it is. Every object in it feels credible, the sounds, the atmosphere, even the graphics are the best I encountered in a VR game. So far, gameplay is pretty standard, but fun. The puzzles so far? Easy but change a lot. The gunplay? Solid, even though I find the feedback and the size of the pistol a bit off.

    Gamechanger? Systemseller? Not really. Even though you don't need an expensive Vive Index (playing it on the OG Vive with normal wands), the prices of headsets, the discomfort of the cables, the weight of the headsets, the quality of the lenses, still need improvement. But we are on the right track. If you have VR, I definitely say: GO BUY IT!

    A very well made VR game. Was able to get about 15 hours out of the story and am going through a second playthrough. Game runs very well on my HTC Vive with no issues or frame drops on the highest settings.

    Story was interesting with great banter between Alyx and Russel and very unique environments that I have not seen in any other VR title.     I would have liked it if there was more weapons and more combat scenes with more enemies. Currently you only ever fight 2-3 combine at once and I would have liked to have fought more. This led to the game feeling too easy on the hardest difficulty for me.

    Malheureusement, le jeu n'est pas localisé autrement qu'en anglais, ce qui me fait lui enlever un point (oui c'est important pour moi. Les pro-VO râleurs peuvent toujours mettre le jeu en VO, alors que moi je n'ai pas le choix).

    Très bon point concernant l'optimisation. Le rendu global du jeu est propre, les vues proches et les textures sont extrêmement détaillées (les vues lointaines un peu moins. Mais au regard des performances nécessaires c'est un moindre mal). Je suis sur une génération de carte graphique inférieure (GTX 1070) et le jeu tourne comme un charme, détail élevés.

    A must for VR fans and a great introduction for VR newcomers. A great sci-fi story with ambitious environments and mechanics. Mind bending experience for sure. Some things that could've been implemented are not here, like melee combat or more direct physical contact with the enemies and more physical puzzles. Also grabbing corners or objects to peek like in The Walking Dead Saints andA must for VR fans and a great introduction for VR newcomers.     Valve has done it again! One of the only companys that would push a medium that isnt widely adopted and making it a must buy. In a year where TLOU2 and Cyberpunk2077 will release, I can say without a doubt this will remain my GOTY.

The way the gameplay is built around the grabbity gloves also is so intuitive and easy to use i had a blast anytime I had to use them (which is all the time)

    The story is suitably Half Life. HL oozes through every interaction of every character, level, voive and so on. The atmosphere is so enthralling that the game is hard to put down. Its so well done that its making me want to replay through HL 1 & 2 again just bc I am so sucked into the universe again. There are sections of the game that also go full horror and creep and its so much more immersive in VR.

    I played on the normal difficulty and found it a perfect balance of challenge and enjoyment. The game clocked in at around 13 hours for me which I found perfect. Any longer and I think it would have overstayed its welcome for a first time experience in VR.
    The gameplay CONSTANTLY throws new challenges at you. Every time youre just getting used to one mechanic, the game throws something new at you. it really keeps you on your toes.

    I could go on and on about the positives about the game. Its certainly not perfect though. While I'd say 95% of the game is extremely intuitive, there are definitely parts that you scratch your head as you figure out what to do next. The game barley gives any help at all and its up to you as an experienced gamer to figure out some of the puzzles yourself. Unless you are a total beginner at video games, you will eventually figure out what to do. But if youre a first time gamer and just jumping into this, good luck.

    Overall this game is a masterpiece in my eyes. To push the medium of VR to the next level and making this a reason to get VR is a serious accomplishment. I highly recommend this game to fans of the franchise and newcomers alike. The gameplay and atmosphere are too good to pass up.

As a Half-Life fan I definitely think this is a worthy entry to the series, and while I understand that the game being VR only is a letdown for many, I can not imagine this game on any other platform.

    The only letdown for me personally is the lack of any    Half-Life: Alyx takes VR to the next level with its immersive story and locales, combined with superb gameplay and intriguing puzzles. As a Half-Life fan I definitely think this is a worthy entry to the series, and while I understand that the game being VR only is a letdown for many, I can not imagine this game on any other platform.

    The only letdown for me personally is the lack of any proper melee combat, which will reduce the score a point for me, honestly. Nevertheless, the game has exceeded my expectations, and I hope that those who are sitting on the sidelines without a VR headset get the chance to play it in the near future.     FEW little glitches, No 2 handed weapon and much more gunfight then narrative ( i'm more into the narrative style of previous Half life ) are my negative points
    Just get it, if you don't have a VR headset, Get one, this is the future, i get my Oculus Rift S for 350€, So don't buy a console and buy a VR headset ;)    … Expand

    --The game here IS the VR. The game is you doing things for real, figuring out how to aim and hip fire and reload and toss things. As opposed to having all that stripped away so you're just running in a circle managing cool downs.
    --The puzzles are actually puzzles; they have consistent logic, visual hints, and build in complexity over the campaign. As opposed to "find the one hidden punchable or climbable thing so you can progress".
    --The game is full of character. The infested Slavic city feels like real life 1990s Europe, the alien tech is creepy and awesome (cow brain computer puzzles!), and the characters and enemies grow on you as you see more of them.

    If you own VR I'm just preaching to the choir, because you've already bought Alyx. Enjoy =)    … Expand

    An exceptional VR game, I wish there was a bit more difficulty but as far as most of the game design choices go i think they made the right ones. I still think the best VR experiences are in racing & flying simulators but i guess that's even more expense for people.

    This is the masterpiece that VR needed to solidify itself as a viable area for developers to make experiences in. Valve is back, and this game is proof of that. If you love Half-Life, you'll love this game, and the ending.

    I only have my cheap old Oculus Rift, but the experience is breathtaking, the level of detail, immersion and just how much you can do with the environment.

    I got bullied, I got harassed and others just joined the crowd to do that.

    The entire game without a doubt blew me away. Borderline favorite Half-life game of all time. The graphics, gunplay, even small things like lighting just bring the game a completely new and fresh feel. Absolutely recommend!

    Played about 2/3 of it in 15 days with a 200$ second-hand Oculus cv1.
    It's a truly Valve game: careful attention to detail, vast and realistic landscapes, beautiful graphics, good story, excellent gameplay, incredible detailed sound, the full HL universe. And then the VR plus: Great inmersion, very easy to control, you totally forget of yourself for hours, very intense but not scary. I    Played about 2/3 of it in 15 days with a 200$ second-hand Oculus cv1.
    It's a truly Valve game: careful attention to detail, vast and realistic landscapes, beautiful graphics, good story, excellent gameplay, incredible detailed sound, the full HL universe. And then the VR plus: Great inmersion, very easy to control, you totally forget of yourself for hours, very intense but not scary. I end really tired each sesion.
    But the best off all I think is that there's still room for improvement: Physics can be better (some stucks and plane crossings), story can improve (might be too lineal and less humorous than previous chapters), inmersiveness can still be bettter (not very realistic to store things in your wrists. What about a belt?).
    So I'm eagerly waiting for a HL Alyx 2 and I'm sure I'll be to HL-A as HL2 was to HL1.

    Update: Just ended it in a four hours continuous session. Physically and mentally wasted. It was good enough from the start, but man, after passing Jeff, the last two chapters shines.    … Expand

    Half-Life Alyx is proof that Valve is still at its best creatively. This emblematic franchise has been brought to virtual reality; in Alyx we enjoy an immersion never seen before, with comfortable and intuitive mechanics as well as excellent visuals and atmosphere that accompany this interesting adventure within the iconic saga.

    A special mention should be made of the game's dialog, mainly consisting of Alyx herself and Russel, a scientist who Alex remains in constant communication with throughout the game. Their relationship feels genuine, the conversations between them are enjoyable, and almost all of the intended comedic moments land perfectly, which is something most video games seem to have trouble with.
