Yes, Yes, Y-E-S. As long as you are mindful of your surroundings the game isnt difficult because Its not a grind through enemies shooter, its a game you figure out. Its all set pieces and set-ups that allow you to be the hero in a truly awesome series of action sequences. Looks awesome, plays great. Best single player fps experience currently happening anywhere!

Great gaming and story continuation. Could be an hour longer by adding more enemies at certtain points. I wish to see more alone time without Alyx during gameplay. I'm not saying the change is nessecary, it would just feel more classic.

Absolutely worth the wait...it would be nice to have it last a little longer, but if Valve keeps it's word and puts out another episode every 5 or 6 months, I'll live with a shorter game. Don't let us down Valve!

Alot of people complain about the price point of this game, but the way I look at it is this. Normal games offer about 20 hrs of play for $80.00. Eposide 1 offers 5 hrs for $20.00. The way i figure it on par with other games for pricing, plus this is just a plain great game.

I am sort of disappointed when I played the game. The multiplier of HL2 SUCKED compared to hl1, since the Tau Cannon gun was gone. WTF is with the weapons? Exact same weapons... no change. Why not add a few more. I looked at wikipedia and it showed that they deleted like 15 weapons! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_weapons_in_Half-Life_2 I did feel at parts it was repetitive.I am sort of disappointed when I played the game. They really, REALLY need to add more weapons, and add more variety. Why weren't there any boat/car scenes in HL2 episode 1... Those were like the funest part of HL2. Expand

Amazing interaction and WOW the story is just getting better and better. Please don't let Alyx die! I think I love her. LOL. It really takes the game to a new level of drama and intensity and is fun the whole way through. I hope episode two isn't too far behind because I just have to know what happens next! It's short, but I've never played sweeter. Thank you Valve!

This is definately a nine or ten, it would have been a clear 10 if it lasted a bit longer, but it's only an episode after all (and the low price reflects that). They've done some nice updates to the engine, but most importantly the story unfolds almost continously through the entire game. No long boring parts at all!

Well game play, what there was of it is a 9.5-10
I believe the price tag is too high as im sure many others do (as ActionTrip says). I am going to try and get friends to pay me $5-10 to get my user/pass, so they can play it w/o being ripped off for $20. It was fun to re-enter the HL2 universe, but i think from now on I will be the renter, not the original purchaser.

The dynamic difficulty from SiN: EP1 has spoiled me I guess. Overall though, the novelty of the game engine has worn off and the lack of consideration for advanced players has costs the game points. All the people I have spoken to in my neighbourhood think alike and somehow all the people here are EP1-addicted/fanatics? Where have you all been in the past few years? When you rate this EP1 with a 10 what were CoD (2), Battlefield (2), F.E.A.R. and HL2 then.....a 25??! Yes the graphics are great, just as they were in HL2 (ok HDR is added and it does look nice, but it's not that much of a difference). The weapons are ok....and exactly the same as in HL2. The monsters are ok....just as they were in HL2. Well, they did add one whole new monster. Some 'genious' used almost a year to come up with a....ZOMBIE! It's just a fatter and faster version of the standard-zombie from HL2. How refreshing. Did they become smarter? No...not at all. They just come rushing towards you. It feels like my duty to inform potential buyers. PLEASE go and play the game at a store or at an friends place. It surely ain't worth the $20,-. Even at 'difficult' you will probably be able to end this game in about 2-3 hours. Do you pay for an superb new concept with fantastic eyecandy, great gameplay and AI? Yo! This game is just as good, if not better than Half Life 2. Number 1, the game is *way* harder. This is probably The Good: Incredible level design, enemy and friendly AI, action sequences, physics, story, animation, graphics, and character interaction. Valve has managed to once again create a very believable world, one that feels truly alive. The Bad: Although it is supposed to be short, as it is an episode, I still felt it was missing perhaps a half-hour to and hour of gameplay. This is probably due to its other flaw: it takes about that same amount of time to truly hit its stride: the first hour or so feels like a non-interactive movie rather than a breathing world. But once it picks up the pace (in chapter two, Low-Life), it surpasses Half-Life 2 itself in gamplay mechanics. Kudos to valve for not following the trends of other expansion packs, which have mainly been a way to throw some new weapons and a level or two at the player. This, on the other hand, feels like a genuniely thought-out extension of the story of Half-Life. Left me craving for episode two. Expand

Great levels, animations & sounds. Story is still one of the best I seen, and looks like it will be a jaw dropper of an ending. Only reason this isn't a 10/10 is because I would have liked to have played through another two/three levels, and would have been nice to be brought into some newer enviorments to hl2. Can't wait for ep2!!

This game was fantastic, and managed to introduce a few new twists and turns throughout its expected episodic span. This release was darker than Half-Life 2 and fullfilled the Half-Life tradition of spine-tingling action. An evening of yelping at 'zombines' well spent.

This game is worth each of the 20 bucks I spent: a lot of supension letting you totally forget your environment ("ok I´m gonna quit the game, just let me take a look behind the next corner... and the next... and the next"), many answers to the questions left open by HL², and some new questions making me count the days to the release of episode 2.

It feels like you play through the same part two or three (or more) times before you're allowed to move onto something new. The fact that you have Alyx running around with you the entire time is being used as a selling point. Let it be known, though, that having an invincible side-kick with unlimited ammo actually detracts from the game's immersion. More than too many times did I step back in the middle of a fight to watch Alyx play the game for me. And if having an NPC steal all my kills wasn't enough, anytime I encountered a puzzle she held my hand and told me exactly what to do. The game definately has its moments but the same level of quality and polish that were found in Half-Life 2 are just not there in Episode One. I'm honestly not sure if I regret paying for it or not. It's right on the line. Buy it if you're a Half-Life fan and have 20 dollars to spare but don't be surprised if you're a bit disappointed. Expand

Great add on to HL2. Superb graphics, gameplay, level design. A few issues though: it's too short (but it's cheap!) and there are no new environments. Alyx is too tough and her bullets don't hurt you, which does reduce the realism significantly.

Episode One is an amazing game for the time it lasts. It is short, though, so try and find it for $15 or less and you will feel much better about the purchase. Steam delivery is extremely convenient, though, so the extra $5 could be considered same day shipping cost! Regardless, if you enjoyed Half-Life 2, Episode One is a must play.

Another thing was the AI. Man, those guys are not that smart. The only AI that kind of messed me up was the last Strider the player had to face. Then i went through the comments, and heard you guys tweaked it. Man, i wish that tweaked AI was in the hole game. The length, which a lot of people have been compaining about is not that bad. I mean, come on, this is an episode with about 6 chapters. This is an expansion pack just like Blue Shift was. The price is ok, i guess. Paying $15 would probably have been better. But, if there is going to be 2 more episodeds, then paying $60 for a full game is not too bad when you compare it to Xbox 360 games (60 to 70). At another point, the graphics. With my meager graphics card, i could really see the small details Valve created in player models, like the eyes. Also, since this is coming out in episodic form, little tweaks would be greatly appreciated. (Thats what you guys said in the commentary so ya better do it). Finally, if you do not want to play a 5 hr game for $20, then wait for all 3 episodes to come out in about a year and a half, buy them in a bundle, and play it like a regular game. (This will happen if the dates are the same, which they probably wont be with Valves date timing.) Other than that, i recommend to buy the game. Coming from a guy whose played HL, Opfor, BS, HL2, and now HL2EP1, i really liked it. Now, if only you guys could bring back Sheppard from OpFor, would i be estatic. Expand

I found that the ending was much better than HL2, providing some closure of the overall mission of getting your ass out of the City 17. The humor and writing in the game was well done, especially the scenes with Dog. I did, however, mentally note that some parts of the game I was drudging through, such as the elevator section of Lowlife and parts of Urban Flight. The real thrill was all done in the beginning of the game with preventing the collapse of the Citadel, but after that the action started to get boring. While Episode One does provide a nice continuation, I wished for something more storywise, although the prospect of the "transmission" Alyx copied will keep me guessing. Story Pros: 1. The continuation of the Half-Life story, universe, characters and gman. 2. I love how they answer just enough to keep us satisfied but open up so much more for Episode 2 and 3. 3. Alyx and the other characters reappearing was great, but more so Alyx/D0G. GFX: Pros: 1. Source is looking good, very good. 2. The new effects added by Valve are insane. Especially the core. 3. Shader improvements (Bumpmaps etc) 4. Texture improvements (Alyx/D0G detail etc) 5. HDR is holy shit implemented very well. 6. Hero Lighting (Really adds to Alyx) Neutral: 1. Only Alyx and D0G had major texture/shader/model improvements. Most of the other things still had improvements but no where near Alyx/D0G. Cons: 1. Shadow bug still there (i hope Valve fixes this, i know it must be a hard bug to crack if they haven't fixed it yet, so all we can do is wish them luck) 2. Whats with the branches of some tress. (They are like that in HL2/CSS) They look horrible. Gameplay: Pros: 1. The puzzles where great as always 2. Nice return of all the weapons 3. Seemed like the AI was better and harder 4. Alyx being with you the whole game BIG PLUS! Length: Neutral: 1. Took me 4/half hours to beat. Everyone knew this was the length so nothing to complain about. I will always want more tho. Cant wait for Episode 2!!! Plus the commentary is going to give me another 4 or so hours or play time. Ending: Pros: 1. WOW. All i can say is WOW! Neutral: 1. It didn't look as destructive as F.E.A.R's ending but it had its own tone and feel to it. I wouldn't say ether was better or worse just they had a different target. Music: Pros: 1. Amazing music Neutral: 1. More more more more more more more!!!!!!!! Commentary Truly great feature! A lot of work was put into it and it was very fun and cool listening to the tracks. It reminded me of the wait for Half-Life 2 and i experienced more Half-Life with a great community once again! Valve you have done it again! The improvements to the graphics, gameplay, and general Half-Life universe were vast and plenty. Right now I'm thinking of the new story and GFX updates to come. The new games Valve is planning. The good: It looked amazing, and at $17.99 for preorder, it was affordable. It seemed to flow well. The bad: It was terribly predictable, with painful plot holes. A lot of repetitiveness. The ugly: For $20 I expect more than 3 hours of game play, and the story more or less didn't advance at all. E1 leaves you right back where you were with HL2 wondering "Uh... now what?"

With the currently used AI combine troopers are not scared of granades, simply a "Watch out!" they still get blown up though. Some of them will also run the same path a dead combine trooper did, making them fall in the same fate. I need to be challanged a more chalanged than making my weapons incredibly weak, I need to be forced to think alternative ways of anihalating a squad of the combine because going at them head on would be suicide. It would be also nice if there where more enemy classes, although i am still satisfied with the current charachters. I think Half Life 2 Episode 1 was a very thrilling experience. Pros: Episode one gave you a lot more of Half-Life 2. There are a good amount of puzzles, only a few of which require physics. The loading sequences and puzzles are well placed to ensure that you do get your breaks from the action when it becomes too stressful, however. The AI of Alyx is absolutely wonderful, she has the capability to move around the world according to your movements and your actions, plotting out the best strategy in that situation. The game answers the question: "How do you and Alyx survive?". Cons: The game was relatively short. It took me 5 hours on hard mode, and took me 6 hours on hard mode with the commentary turned on (the commentary is very interesting to listen to, however). Though the game is worthy of two playthroughs, it is difficult to find a reason to play it a third time, seeing as how nothing in episode 1 is new or original. Overally: This game is worth the $20; basically, it is more Half-Life 2, which isn't a bad thing, but not necessarily a good thing either. I was hoping for some unique gameplay; instead, we got HDR lighting, improved AI, and one question answered. This review may sound negative, but that is because I am outlining what is bad; the things that are good are very obvious. Expand

  1. Just like the original Half-Life 2, Episode One keeps the player entertained almost the entire time through perfect pacing and by being inventive, surprising and getting the basics absolutely right. It's a wonderful advert for the excitement that true episodic content can generate when approached the right way.
  2. Episode One is a memorable romp through the Half-Life universe, with gameplay that's even more satisfying than that of "Half-Life 2." The only downside is that, due to its episodic nature, it's over far too soon.
