Although I agree that this expansion is way too short than any normal expansion and it's way to expensive because of the short time to play, it's the same hl2 and it for sure deserves the best rating. god bless valve for creating such a wonderful game, I forgive them for this EP One robbery, I can't really wait for the next episodes.

Perhaps my 10 rating is a bit too generous, but I do believe this game deserves a lot of respect. However, when I played it through a second time with an entirelly new computer (that means graphics turned way up) I began to notice how stunning this game really looks with the new lighting effects givnig it a beautiful touch. I also played it through with no cheats which really improved my experience. I used the the gravity gun the entire time in the third time I played it and believe me, there's nothing better than lighting a zombie on fire and then flinging him back with a rock. Priceless. However, I did see how this installment might have been a bit boring and confusing if you haven't played Half Life 2. So my suggestion for people that are planning to buy this game: Buy the Half Life 2 + 1 pack off of Steam or just buy Half Life 2 and Episode 1 seperatelly. Expand

Awesome continuation to an incredible game. It will be confusing for anyone who hasn't played Half-life 2 so playing that before Episode 1 is a must. Perfection! Probably the most entertaining 5 or 6 hours I have had playing games. An absolute wonderful expansion to the revolutionary Half-Life 2 game. The interaction between Freeman and Alyx is beautiful, well thought out and perfectly executed. There were times where I found myself reminiscing of the past and laughing because of Alyx cute remarks. A splendid game which should be played by every fan of Half-Life X.

I really liked how all the characters (most noteably Alyx Vance) seem more developed and capable of expression to Gordon, eachother, and their environment. It makes them seem more human, thereby adding to the ever-increasing level of realism in the Half-Life universe. The improved facial animations and dynamic range graphics come a long way to enriching the gaming experience.
I also found the cliff-hanger ending was very suspenseful and effective to suit the mood the game had imbued into the player up to that point. For those who have played Half-Life 2 and enjoyed it, and I believe that's practically everyone, playing Episode 1 should be your next gaming endeavour. If you like it a mere tenth of how much I do, I'm sure it will become one of your favourites.
    This game is truly superlative.

I admit, HL2: Episode One's biggest flaw is that it's too short, but that doesn't matter. A short game can still be great, providing those 4 hours or so are a blast, and with Episode One that's the case. It wasn't really supposed to be another full game, as Half Life 2, it was only meant to be a small add-on, to show the aftermath events, since the ending of HL2 was way too ambiguous.I admit, HL2: Episode One's biggest flaw is that it's too short, but that doesn't matter. It wasn't really supposed to be another full game, as Half Life 2, it was only meant to be a small add-on, to show the aftermath events, since the ending of HL2 was way too ambiguous. Episode One takes place over 5 chapters, over a variety of locations. I felt the first two chapters were a bit flat, since you only pretty much used the Gravity gun and picked around the dull ruins, but the next 3 chapters were really great and intense in their own way. Although for the most part Ep 1 doesn't add anything new to what we've already seen in HL2, there is one major gameplay element that it has managed to exploit really well that HL2 only briefly brushed upon, and that is teamwork. As you play throughout the chapters, Alyx is pretty much always with you, helping out, with some parts you not being able to do by yourself. And this is done in such a way that you don't just feel like it's a mindless npc providing covering fire, but actually that you and her are trying to survive and escape the post-apocalyptic city by yourselves. Ep 1 is also designed in so much detail that you can play an entire game without ever having to use a gun weapon. One of the in-game achievements challenges the player to do just that, and I would highly suggest for everyone who enjoyed Ep1 to try that on one of the playthroughs, because it really is fun. Episode 1 manages to continue the story from HL2 well and at the same time opens up more of the plot for the next installment. Expand

For an sequel, Episode One has some flaws, like it doesn't feature new stuff like characters, and weapons, but it continues the story with the same professionalism as the previous game did.

However, Episode One comes with an updated engine, with advanced shaders, and even more improved AI.

With the currently used AI combine troopers are not scared of granades, simply a "Watch out!" they still get blown up though. Some of them will also run the same path a dead combine trooper did, making them fall in the same fate. I need to be challanged a more chalanged than making my weapons incredibly weak, I need to be forced to think alternative ways of anihalating a squad of the combine because going at them head on would be suicide. It would be also nice if there where more enemy classes, although i am still satisfied with the current charachters. Other than this, the new entry is all I could wish for and in future entries you should make gameplay with Alyx and Barney even more extencibe to find out more about them. "Half-Life 2: Episode One" is the way an expansion should be made. Expand

Excellent game. The detail improvement in the characters in HL2: EP1 compared to HL2 is amazing. You can actually see the worry in their faces when you're about to do something dangerous. Very nice ending and preview for EP2 - it really gives you the feeling that you're fighting for their survival.

Awesome. Continued the story that ended so abruptly in 2. The first hour is a bit slow, but after that there really isn't a break in the action until the end. I definitely suggest playing the game on Hard. Well balanced, and never punishing.

Yo! This game is just as good, if not better than Half Life 2. Number 1, the game is *way* harder. Getting the gravity gun so soon was a terrific hook for me; the early, scarier portions of the game are not nearly as overdone as Doom 3 and the overall game was far more fun. It's not as short as everyone says it is, but it's definitely not a full game. I'd rather play 1/3 of Yo! This game is just as good, if not better than Half Life 2. This episode of half-life universe is a really great game.
I understand why Gordon Freeman wont get any new weapon in ep1, becouse i'm sure all weapons available were used by the rebels, that's make it no new weapons in ep1.

I'd like to give HL2 Ep1 a "10" but I cannot due to the short length of the game. But other than tat, this game is just about as close to perfect as you will find on the market today.

Though there are no new elements such as weapons, environments or enemies the fascinating story and characters get you banned until the spectacular new adventure for traveling outside of city 17 has found his spectacular ending. The source engine has been slightly improved, so there HDR effects available which looks quite neat!

Its a truly amazing game. Its makes use of a well balanced technique whereby gordon must solve puzzles and fight monsters accordingly. The phyics is amazing and the graphics is astonishing especially the game is programmed so well that lower end users can still experience good graphics! The only let down was that it was so short.

More forced use of the Gravity Gun is encouraged, also moving with Alyx the whole game leads to some different gameplay. I have to say that I am very impressed with Episode 1. The gameplay and setting are very true to Half-Life 2, and the action picks up pretty much exactly where the previous game left off. Just finished the game. It took about 5 hrs, give or take some time. My first impression was a great game, but as any game, EP1 had its faults. Another thing was the AI. Man, those guys are not that smart. The only AI that kind of messed me up was the last Strider the player had to face. Then i went through the comments, and heard you guys tweaked it. Man, i wish that tweaked AI was in the hole game. The length, which a lot of people have been compaining about is not that bad. I mean, come on, this is an episode with about 6 chapters. This is an expansion pack just like Blue Shift was. The price is ok, i guess. Paying $15 would probably have been better. But, if there is going to be 2 more episodeds, then paying $60 for a full game is not too bad when you compare it to Xbox 360 games (60 to 70). At another point, the graphics. With my meager graphics card, i could really see the small details Valve created in player models, like the eyes. Also, since this is coming out in episodic form, little tweaks would be greatly appreciated. (Thats what you guys said in the commentary so ya better do it). Finally, if you do not want to play a 5 hr game for $20, then wait for all 3 episodes to come out in about a year and a half, buy them in a bundle, and play it like a regular game. (This will happen if the dates are the same, which they probably wont be with Valves date timing.) Other than that, i recommend to buy the game. Coming from a guy whose played HL, Opfor, BS, HL2, and now HL2EP1, i really liked it. Now, if only you guys could bring back Sheppard from OpFor, would i be estatic. Expand

  1. Just like the original Half-Life 2, Episode One keeps the player entertained almost the entire time through perfect pacing and by being inventive, surprising and getting the basics absolutely right. It's a wonderful advert for the excitement that true episodic content can generate when approached the right way.
  2. Episode One is a memorable romp through the Half-Life universe, with gameplay that's even more satisfying than that of "Half-Life 2." The only downside is that, due to its episodic nature, it's over far too soon.
