Gunbrella's compelling revenge tale, challenging platforming, and light Metroidvania elements make it an entertaining indie action game.

Gunbrella probably won't appeal to everyone, but if you like fast gameplay with fun movement, you shouldn't miss the game.

Despite its shortcomings, there's something about Gunbrella that kept the engagement alive. Maybe it's because of the beautiful visuals, fantastic score, and clever character writing, or maybe it's because it oozes with personality and potential. Whatever it is, there is something here that is special and will surely satisfy anyone that's a fan of this genre. With any luck, Gunbrella will find enough success to get a second installment that can take this concept to its full potential.

Gunbrella has a lot of potential, both in its storytelling and combat. Unfortunately there never feels like there is enough of either that will or could catapult the game into the upper echelons of pixilated side-scrollers. It is very close to being something special, even when it is embracing some familiar adventure tropes. Hopefully, the world of Gunbrella will be expanded on and grow, because it deserves more of the things that make it great.

Gunbrella definitely includes a unique gameplay tool and presents charming pixel-art aesthetic. Unfortunately, its storytelling, though not bad per se, constantly pauses the action to a frustrating degree. Moreover, the level design leaves a lot to be desired, which is a shame considering that the eponymous weapon is a joy to use.

  1. Gunbrella is a short and intensely fun little shooter, whose biggest fault is occasionally luring you into wanting it to be something more than it actually is. What’s here is a bouncy, blasty, highly original 2D platformer with a silly and interesting weapon at its core, set in a filthy dirty steampunk western world, with dialogue that’s cute but not too cute, a catchy musical score and a screen that shakes just right when you fire your shotgun into a guy.
