    The people that came up with the 12 level ambulance mission are probably all psychopaths with no experience in game making. It's not just purely unfun, but also has the worst mission design I have ever seen. The AI and the driving experience is so bad, that the mission is literally unplayable. The patients' AI is also trash, they gonna run into the car every single time, so you can fail the mission or lose 15 seconds waiting for them to stand up. Oh, and i didn't mention the fact, that there is a chance for the patients to just completely stuck inside a building at any point and there is nothing you can do about it. If you got this bug it's technically instant mission fail and you have to start all over again. Challenging games and missions are one thing, straight up unfun ones with **** mechanics are an other.
    For the rest of the game, well every single thing about it is bad, probably even for 2002. A lot of things just doesn't make any sense, the missions are boring even for GTA and the so called "gunplay" is miserable. I had the most fun doing the taxi missions, because at least the driving is slightly enjoyable if you don't have to do it for an hour, without any mistakes.    … Expand

    This game is the first great title of the legendary game series. However it has several disadvantaged: serious graphics bugs at several locations, very simple fighting/shooting technique, the game story isn`t deep only 25-40% are really interesting. Anyway it was great as a beginning of a great game series.

    GTA 3....simply put....hasn't aged well. At least the PC port of it hasn't. I've heard it's pretty good on PS2, so I reckon you should play that version instead. The steam version (which I am reviewing) is just terrible. While it's easy to run, the controls are horrid and the driving is just awful. The shooting is just plain bad and the game has an unappealing artstyle. I'll admit theGTA 3....simply put....hasn't aged well. At least the PC port of it hasn't.     Well, that came to an end my passage of this legendary trilogy, or else as it is called "3D Universe". I went through all the old parts of GTA (VC, SA, III) and I liked this one less than the others. When I just decided to take a three-ruble note, it seemed to me that after passing it I would not get the same impression as from VC or SA, but still this is a classic without which there would be no GTA at all.
    Let's move on to the review itself, otherwise I'm not on the topic: D. I'll start with what I liked about this game: ch. the hero Claude (I must admit that I liked him more than CJ from SA or the same Tommy from VC, although he did not utter a word for the whole game, but there is something in him, probably his charisma), the atmosphere of Liberty -City of the beginning of zero, 3 cities and shootouts (in any GTA you will not see severed limbs lying on the ground), perhaps that's all.
    Now what I didn't like: the plot (many missions made purely for the sake of the game not being prolonged), add. missions (especially missions on Marty Chonks, 4 missions are absolutely the same ...), the behavior of bots (traffic that constantly crashes and makes nonsense on the roads, pedestrians always throw themselves under the wheels attracting you to the cops, and the cops are hardcore in three rubles ...), Well, actually the most important thing: if you suddenly want to complete the game, then you just need to stuff the game with various fixes, because the game will be 30 fps and a bunch of missions thwarted due to the fact that the cut-scene simply cannot load or the game is deadlocked. For example: once I shot down a helicopter, when it crashed into the water, the game froze tightly so that even the task manager did not help, then I just turned on the frame limiter and everything became normal, the conclusion: the game is really outdated by its optimization (and I did not only about GTA III, this also applies to VC and SA).
    Bottom line: I do not want to say that I do not recommend going through GTA III, but if you want to play comfortably, then you should bother with plugins and various fixes. If you are a fan of the Grand Theft Auto series of games, then you simply have to go through this part like all the other old parts of this game franchise and not immediately take up GTA V as many of my friends do.

    What an absolute classic. When it came out, it was legendary. Modern open world city that had 3 different city areas, you can drive any car, with solid story. This game was revolutionary!

    I was a big fan of GTA 2 back then, and it was a big surprise when GTA3 was released. I had immediately bought the disc and played the game. It reminded me of GTA2: the mute main character, style, driving, radios. At the same time everything was on the new scale: 3D, music, hits, the solid story line. I was disappointed that no story was continued from the second game, I couldn't seeI was a big fan of GTA 2 back then, and it was a big surprise when GTA3 was released. I had immediately bought the disc and played the game. It reminded me of GTA2: the mute main character, style, driving, radios. At the same time everything was on the new scale: 3D, music, hits, the solid story line. I was disappointed that no story was continued from the second game, I couldn't see Zaibatsu again (except a commercial). However, overall impression was positive.

    After many, MANY years, more then 19, I played again with the graphics upgrade pack.

    Well. Let's compare the reviews.

    Me, teenager.

    Pros.:
    - Awesome music. Especially RISE FM.
    - Sniper rifle. LOVE IT!
    - Driving, can steal any car, drive sport cards, some of them remind of GTA2 (Yakuza stinger).
    - The story is so cool!
    - Very sad to finish the game. I tried to finish all the missions but... Whatever. I finished.
    - I just like to drive around the city!

    Cons.:
    - Some missions are hard, had to replay over and over again. That goddamn truck and Colombian mafia trying to destroy it.
    - Goddamn airplane mission when you need to find the boat. I almost destroyed my keyboard.
    - That's it I think.

    Me. 2020.

    Pros.:
    - Music, Rise FM.
    - Versatility of finishing some missions.
    - Different ways of reaching parts of the city (tunnel or bridges).
    - More weapons, more missions, more characters. Characters are memorable. Even though some of them are not really recognizable from the concept arts.
    - The opening and ending theme. Attaching and fulfilling.
    - The attempt to add some cinematography into the game. It's not a complete attraction like GTA2, full of **** and giggles. It's more serious. Even though some missions are fun, posters (Bad Fellas, for example). All these references to pop culture and movies (the Godfather, Reservoir Dogs, etc.).
    - The system of hidden packages. The more you get, the better default equipment you have near the hideout. PRICELESS! You should plan the game play. AGAIN.

    Cons.:
    - Overbuffed Italian mafia with their shotguns. But it may be a cons, because you have to PLAN how to play. For example, finish side missions first.
    - I miss that system of gang reputation from the second game. If you kill other gang members, you may restore the reputation.
    - I REALLY MISS ZAIBATSU NOW.
    - The music tracks is very VERY limited. I ended up listening to nothing, because I have heard it all.
    - The graphics look awful. The game is dull. Physics are OK, but the details. The game required more details I suppose.
    - The story is quite short. And characters are not that attaching. It was fixed in Vice City I guess.
    - No bikes.
    - No **** swimming. It's ridiculous.
    - There should be payment for the hideout. Like in GTA2. Of course, the **** the cheaper.

    Anyways, the game is a LEGEND! Worth showing to the kids.    … Expand

    Its kinda dated, but it's hold up as a good GTAesque game, the missions are incredibly fun, the lack of features as swimming sucks and you need to mod to be able to swim, but still a good game.

    This game is my childhood. Cant give a low score because is didn't age very well. Storytelling is still good tho. Openworld is OK. This game will always have a very soft place in my heart...

    Неплохая игра, первая игра серии в 3D. На момент выхода наверняка была прорывной игрой. Из минусов довольно скучный сюжет и никакущий главный герой.

    the pc version is much better than the ps2, unfortunately the steam version is a bit buggy, with car colors being dark and the npcs AI getting more stupid, but nothing that a downgrade version doesn't solve the problem, I recommend the mod that simulates the version of the first xbox and a texture pack that corrects the textures of the cars.

    The legendary game, which is the main starter game of the GTA legend. Even though its story is not at the forefront, it is a peak production for 2001 with completely different missions. When I go to the discount, I would say it would be more convenient to buy the package containing GTA 3, GTA: VC, GTA: SA games.

    The historical leap of GTA franchise to 3D. It was probably the most anticipated game in my life. And it was a damn good game too. It was not perfect, the graphics kinda sucked even back in the day, but gameplay-wise with its open world and realistic detailed city where you can do anything you want it was unlike anything we have ever seen before.

    Mind blowing for it's time. Defined a genre. Depicts dark, gritty and gloomy atmosphere of New York. Who else could put you with Mafia, Yakuza, Triads, Cartel and more.

    Masterpiece. Beginning of legendary series.

    It's my second best game I've ever played. It's not a perfect game, especially for PC version. Still, city design is the best of every games including other GTA series, and gameplay is not obsolete even in 2020.

    GTA 3 is a fun sandbox game.
    It's an very important game for video game history.
    Even tho GTA 3 is a good game there are many problems. I would say that the biggest problems are the driving physics, the time limits on some of the missions are too short and of course the fact that your vehicle explode when it lands upside down. Good things. As I said this is a fun sandbox. There    GTA 3 is a fun sandbox game.
    It's an very important game for video game history.

    - Но она же вышла в 2001 году, будь солидарнее и уважительнее
    - Отстань, я заплатил за неё 400 рублей и мне плевать когда она вышла, я высказываю своё мнение.

    Ах да, их же здесь нет, какая жалость.
    ГТА 3 зарождение великолепной и легендарной серии игр, но саму её легендарной назвать нельзя, мне всё равно что будут кукарекать олды, я вправе полностью полить то, что они любят фекалиями, ведь я оценил эти самые фекалии.

    The huge tech improvement that the game made was changing the top down perspective to a third person view with full control of the camera to look at whatever direction the gamer desire, character models where more detail and had a full body instead of just seeing their head.
    But like i mention, the game is way too frustrating... police officers hates you, and when they chase you they will tear you car into peaces. In every "neighbourhood" every single gang will star shooting at you, even if you don't do anything bad to them. Cars will consume into flames too fast, just a couple of hits are enough. Health can run out too quickly... and you can't swim.
    The story was turning to be a bit more series than the last games and this was a good thing. The missions were mixed... the early missions were easy to take, but as you start to unlock more areas from Liberty City the more difficult this will get.
    GTA 3 is a good game, but it's unbalanced difficult makes the experience a pain in the ass.    … Expand

The world of the game is divided into three parts,    I started the GTA marathon with this game. I don't feel nostalgic for GTA 3, as far as I remember, I preferred Vice City and there are reasons for that.

    The atmosphere of this game is grey and sad compared to the sunny Miami I'm used to. The plot of the game is great. There's no denying that some of the tasks were boring and ridiculous. The world of the game is divided into three parts, which we will gradually open as we go through the story. But the game world still seems small and so it is. And the third island was left unused at all, there was not a single person giving the task. The silence of the protagonist also affected the evaluation. He doesn't radiate any charisma, just a murderer.

    For an updated computer with Windows 10 the game is strange to play, especially because the resolution is very low for today    Back in 2002 I was one of the many players that played this mark in the video game history, and I feel very nostalgic now, in 2019 when I replay it again for a few hours.
    GTA 3 was one of the first games that elevate the "open world games" to what they are today.

    For an updated computer with Windows 10 the game is strange to play, especially because the resolution is very low for today standards. But taking in account the 2002 standards, the game was amazing.

    What a HUGE step from GTA II. I remember I played GTA I at an internet café. I fell in love, so I had no choice but to buy the game and it seems that GTA II was pretty new at that time, so I bought that. From 2D bird's-eye-view to 3D third-person-view. Awesome missions and huge islands, it takes weeks to complete and thanks for that. I like the sportscars, of course.

    Story:
    There is very little of the story, you are generic criminal, someone betrays you, you try to get back on the top and blah blah blah revenge at the end of the game.Stale,linear and uninspired storytelling, redundant missions and uninteresting characters.
    Gameplay:
    The game isn't rewarding at all, as you progress city gangs start becoming more hostile towards you, one of them doesn't even have a reason to do so.Lack of manual save forcing you to go back safe house doesn't really help.
    Map:
    First island is very mediocore, there's port, shops, junkyard and chinatown but other than that it's not very interesting.
    Middle island has many interesting design choices and it's the most interesting one out there.
    Last island is very dissapointing, yeah there's airport and dam but the environment is very minimal, closed tunnels and dozens of copy cat house's .
    Some locations metioned in the game does not appear anywhere on the map, things such as jail and location from the games intro, jail does not appear anywhere on map and location from intro is literally hidden under the third island which is really stupid considering the fact middle island could suit it perfectly.
    Overall the game did not age good in any way, replay value is bare minimal, visuals and sound design are both painfuly outdated, almost non existent story, stale characters, tons of clichés, stereotypes and "dark humour"(if you can call that a humour).    … Expand

    Music and Sounds fit perfectly to the game, but there could be more music.

    But there are some frustrating elements in the game:
    The controlling of shooting is very bad and consolebased. No free mouse view.
    The physic of the cars is unrealistic,the police is too fast and the traffic system is unrealistic, they change the line stupidly.
    There is no free saving, so you lose a lot of time to do the same things again, if you load last savepoints.
    Rockstar was too lazy to release patches to fix some bugs and improve the performance. It reminds me to Bethesda and their Elder Scrolls and Fallout games.    … Expand

Literally ALL the gangs is shooting you on sight and you can't really free roam the game or complete certain side missions after a certain period of time since you will simply die. I think they messed the game up because of that. And the story missions needs to be completed in a strict order, which is not stated in the game in any point, in order to get 100% completion since some missions become unavailable if you don't complete them in a certain order. The whole game functionality seems extremely unnatural and wasn't even that good from the beginning. In a modern city full of a highly developed species as the human being and no one can swim. come on Rockstar, are your brain-cells functioning? And the functionality of the cars where a car simply catching fire and blow isn't how cars work in real life and the traffic is horrible. They drive into you and when you drive as an ambulance with the sirens on some cars simply just stop in front of you and block you which is highly illegal in real life and most people in GTA shouldn't be programmed to do that. All the drivers in GTA 3 must have gotten their driver license in a cereal box or the programmers was horrible at their job. I understand that somethings were a lot harder to do back then but the function of the content in the game is no hard thing to program with the frames they had to work with. To program a car blowing up like that or to change it to act like a real car in real life and not blow up for just falling over is a simple programming which doesn't require more than what they programmed. If they would have put some thoughts and time to develop the content instead of just focusing on the 3D graphics then this could have been a good game. The game was a big fuss simply because it was the first GTA game in 3D and everyone got kind of blind by that but from the first time i played through this game back in 2003 then i was already disappointed of the content because i got a really cheap feeling. Like buying a fancy box and when you open it, it is empty. That is the kind of impression this game had on me. A lot of things have become better and GTA V was a great game and well made in not just the graphics but also the content and the functionality of how the details work in the game. But this game is a shameful spot in the history of Rockstar in my humble opinion. My recommendations is to lay this game to rest for good. Never put it back into a console, just leave it on the shelf... or a box down in the basement or maybe throw Frisbee with the disc, then it will at least come in good use.… Expand

    All your favorite mission types, gameplay elements are there which do a great job, radio stations return and can be pretty funny.

    I've just never been a fan of the dull, dark, rain all the time visuals.

    However, the game suffers from bad design, in that most of the sencond half missions are made on a "try again" basis. You woon't be able to complete them on the first try, because the game designers made damn sure of that. So between every mission, you have to go back home to save the game, then drive to whomever is giving you the mission. Cutscene    The missions and characters are fun.

    The first time I played in the computer room ... somewhere in 2004 I was so amazed, that I began to stand for hours just to get it done. But, my young age and my experience in gaming, barely able to cope. In a few days only managed to finish 2-3 missions. It is the first GTA in 3D. It is simply amazing.

    Presentation:
    In terms of the graphics presentation, it has not aged well. Moreover, even for the time, GTA 3 was already a bit dated on the visuals department compared to other AAA PC games of the time. So expect pixilated textures, blocky models and robotic and clunky animations.
    Sound :
    In the sound department, GTA 3 is only satisfactory, the sound effects of vehicles and weapons are acceptable, and the soundtrack is what you would expect, but the voice-overs, despite above average, are on a lower quality format, which makes understanding people really difficult sometimes.
    Story:
    The player starts as a small bandit climbing thought the crime ranks selling its services to various mobster groups in an attempt to reach the American dream. Mix that with a bunch of "colorful" characters, and the compulsory revenge story, and you have the recipe for any other GTA game ever made. In other words, a bland and cheesy action flick full of clichés, stereotypes and dark "humor ".
    Ok, let's be honest , Rockstar can’t write anything good, just look at what they did to the Max Payne series.
    However, no one plays GTA for its “fantastic” narrative qualities anyway…
    Gameplay:
    If you played the sequels, you will know what to expect here. It’s the same basic mechanics but done poorly.
    The controls are surprisingly acceptable for keyboard and mouse, although the fixed camera when driving was a bit annoying.
    Also particularly annoying was the lack of a global map and the lack of permanent “locations hints” for Ammu-Nation and Pay 'n' Spray on the mini-map.
    In conclusion: GTA 3 might have been innovative for its time, but as it stands today, I cannot recommend it, since the sequels have done it bigger and better than what is presented here.
    But don’t get me wrong, GTA 3 is not a bad game; it’s just not a “unique enough” experience to justify its purchase anymore.
    So unless you’re a GTA fanatic, you’ll be better off keeping you’re GTA 4 installation, or try GTA San Andreas (the best GTA game for the PC in my opinion) as an alternative.    … Expand

    There is one problem with this game... the fighting. You'd think the fighting would be ok in a game about being a criminal, which involves fighting but no. Half the punches miss. However, the rest of the game is great.

    Though I am a fan of the franchise, I think this game deserves a 5 at best. Quite lacks stuff to do when you beat the short 4-5 hour long storyline. Though I like how hard and challenging this game is, I wouldn't recommend this. I really hate the soundtrack as we'll but don't worry because of the MP3 Player.

    Quite frankly the greatest game of the series, and the game that changed all over games into free-roaming clones set in New York City. A plus point and a negative point ofcourse, but with no Grand Theft Auto 3, there would be no Saints Row, Prototype or countless other games.

    The best in the best game of that time ... well designed open-world ..... Well written script and nice voice over .. BEST OF best of that time !! Made a shocking debut as 3D gaming of that time ... i still have whole lot of collection of GTA including that also

    This is where it all started. I remember playing this game 10 years ago and my computer just couldn't handle the "high-end" graphics. Reliving the experience now, it's still an amazing score despite the blurry textures. The story is as entertaining as life expects and the mission fun are endless. Anyone who misses this title should regret having lived his/her life.

    The PC version, while not as good as the PS2 version, is still a lot of fun. The controls take some time to get used to however.

FBI is here, and soon thye army will join in, send them to hell! Then you die. But no problem. Get in a random car and start over. Or just go wherever you want. No limits. No preprogramed paths. But i didn't realised how repetitive they were until i found GTA3. And after 10 years i still play this game.… Expand

    It's quite funny but I don't quite get this phenomena. I mean this game is fairly good but it's not attractive for me in any way. When I was playing it I actually felt lured more by the gameplay possibilities rather then the quests or the story and I think that this is its main problem. I wanted to steal cars, smash them, kill people, buy some guns and then kill more people, then defendIt's quite funny but I don't quite get this phenomena. I mean this game is fairly good but it's not attractive for me in any way. When I was playing it I actually felt lured more by the gameplay possibilities rather then the quests or the story and I think that this is its main problem. I wanted to steal cars, smash them, kill people, buy some guns and then kill more people, then defend from the tank... etc. :) This was fun. I wanted to have some fun and by doing those stuff I was getting what I've wanted even though that game wasn't fully designed in such a way?!

    Played it in October of 2011. It was good fun and got 10 hours into the story. The graphics are very dated, and so is some of the gameplay variants in the missions. Much better than GTA IV in my opinion for fun factor, but I have yet to play it on my pc. Xbox graphics sucked too much for me to continue

    The best GTA 3 era game!!!!!!!!!!
    Why is it good, cause it's easy to mod and the story is very interesting. The radio stations are good specially the one's with commentary.

    Awesome game. Notthing more to say here, everything in this game is good. The best graphics back then when it was released and for sure the most tr00 one of the entire serie. Vice City kept the good job on the trails, but this one is unreachable, imo.

There's as many missions as there are on GTA IV, but there's greater variety in the missions with more variety in the difficulty too.ALL modern sandbox games owe their very existence to this revolutionary game. Liberty City isn't visually impressive, and Shoreside Vale can be confusing to navigate through at the best of times. But everything else is done so well. It's fun to play in and out of missions. The only issue is that there's almost as little to do here as there is in GTA IV. You can't really spend money on anything but weapons. But a 6 star wanted level will get a tank to come after you. Hidden packages (of which there are 100) aren't difficult to find, but not too easy either. There is an incentive for getting them: for every 10 you find a weapon is delivered to your safehouse on every island. Even now this game is good. For 2001/2002, this was years ahead of its time.… Expand

    This game could have been much better. Still, the mood of liberty city and the music on the radio save the game. The missions have vague instructions and many are impossible to do on the first few attempts due to limitations put in by the game makers. Overall, the radio is great, some cars are nice, graphics not too good, and too many bad missions. The map is extremely bad and doesn't helpThis game could have been much better.     I am sorry but this dog smelly game is just bad compared to GTA 3 for the PS2!The PS2 is just good, but this one is just kinda........................I don't know......But play the PS2 version!It's worth!

    This is what makes Grand Theft Auto into Grand Theft Auto, it is the basic essence of the series: Stealing cars, killing people, and doing other 'shady' activities all while in a crime infested city. Although it has next to nothing to do compared to later releases in the Grand Theft Auto series, the story is still fun to play.

At first, I was sorta flustered about the lock-on system, or, rather, lack thereof, but after a while, I came to find the aiming system was far better. Rockstar made the right move. And with the option of skins, mods, and the very cool mp3 radio station, it I first played it on PS2 and couldn't get enough.     one word Masterpiece....I think the main reason why
    upgraded my pc twice is that game...beyond being
    very demanding on u r pc if u can max everything u will really feel like u are there...so many details and so much ingenuity has been put on this game that if i had a choice of only one pc game for the rest of my life...this would be the one cause there so much possibilities beyond    one word Masterpiece....I think the main reason why

The only other problem in his tame is Money, What is it for after you have all the weapons and ammo (not using cheats). Can't buy anything. Only two things this game has a problem with.     This game was my favorite for a long time, and still is one of my favorites. Maybe it can't stand up to more recent releases of the GTA series, but for its time, best of the best.

    I GTA3 I started to play this game and found it has great graphics challanging objectives and it's just peer adictive. I could sit and play for hours..lol tell my legs cramp up. Any how I give GTA3 a ten GO GTA3.

    Have had many an hour playing this super game. Lots to do. I love the huge living breathing city. Was the first game I've played which has such a huge environment and so much to do.

    G-R-E-A-T! Thats all I can say. I know its bad for children and it is not useful but the game entices us so so deeply that we are fascinated and we end up playing the entire game even though we say that is not good for our children.

    What can I say? You gotta play the game to realize that the hype isn't only all true but actually doesn't do the game justice. The world is so organic/chaotic that there are always several ways to complete a mission that the developers probably never even considered. One of the few games I've ever played where it's just and fun and addicting to lose as it is to win.

    What a ride! I loved GTA3 and think all the others, even the older ones where you look from above, were real good. I cant wait for GTA San Andreas and hope it doesn't stop there.

    I bought this based on the ratings on this site - not because it was really my sort of game. It just looked too good to ignore. My first GTA experience and I am hooked - line and sinker thrown in! It's easy to learn and has a great depth of missions and superb pacing of player skill development. A huge playground to explore.
