This game is likely the sleeper hit of the year and certainly the best I have played so far. It's a refreshingly different take on the post-apocalyptic scenario with robots instead of zombies (thank goodness). Some people have said GZ is boring and repetitive but to me it's like an atmospheric movie that takes it's time to draw you in instead of providing cheap thrills.

Some people have said GZ is boring and repetitive but to me it's like an atmospheric movie that takes it's time to draw you in instead of providing cheap thrills.

    THE PROS:

    • no zombies
    • no gratuitous bloody violence
    • no boring exposition or corny dialogue
    • tense and enthralling atmosphere
    • gorgeous graphics (using ReShade filters)
    • big, open and detailed world
    • realistic weather and time of day effects
    • brilliant sound design (particularly for the guns and explosions)

    THE CONS:

    • blurred graphics (out of the box)
    • repeated overuse of assets (many cars and buildings are identical)
    • too few weapon types
    • too few enemy types
    • no save points (you are constantly forced to retread the same ground)

I'd like to give the game a higher score but it is still incredibly buggy with the biggest gripe for me being the fuzzy graphics. Applying ReShade filters and then antialiasing tweaks in the Nvidia Control Panel mostly fixes the problem but these measures shouldn't be necessary. How the game was released in this condition is beyond me. Until this and other problems are fixed it will continue to get bad reviews.

I'll go back and change my rating once the game is done.

    ***More useful info***
Yes, the world is big and a bit empty, but I think that's the point: it's a sandbox game.

Also, the graphics and the sound design are awesome, even with my GTX 970. I don't know what people are talking about. Maybe they just need to disable "dynamic resolution".

Graphics look out of the arc and it doesn't run well for what it is rendering. I got bored early on shooting dog bot after dog bot. Survival and stealth mechanics formulaic. Visually, narratively, gameplay wise nothing stands out. I'ts all kind of meh.

Nice graphics, but the gameplay... As if the developers did not test their open world game. Repetitive, broken AI, boring combat against bots, and most importantly: No rewarding gameplay. You literally get tons of equipment and items very early. Random house, random loot, random quest, random enemy. It is worth $5 perhaps, unfortunately.

Great game. The only thing wrong with it was that they released it way too early. I haven't encountered any bugs because most of them have been fixed, and this game is by far NOT empty. In fact, i'd say BOTW is more empty than this. It's overall a great game, that's best played with friends, but it's still fine single player (which is what i'm playing).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I want to like this game. It shows competent development. But the idea behind that development is less fleshed out than desired. It's boring, repetitive and way too difficult to play solo. The world is massive and the enemies are many, but there is rarely any fun to be had. It's mostly killing the odd Legendary Robot, or exploring the odd base.

Also, Swedish Skynet? Really? Personally i liked the old man's version of an alien attack.

Time passes at the same rate as real time, but game days are about 4 hours, so there is lots of night time play. Just walking in the woods in this game is like taking a real hike and very refreshing, from the crunch of leaves under foot to the wind in the trees.

    Pros:

    * Gorgeous outdoor enviroments, lighting and weather effects
    * the best environmental sounds ever in a game
    * equisite robot designs and animations
    * excellent random distribution of robots
    * smart ai with little cheating
    * glorious explosions

    Cons:

    * very repetitive play cycle in 1st half of game - forage for ammo for 1 hour, hunt robots for an hour, repeat.
    * feels unfinished - lots of bugs - visual oddities, getting stuck in cargo containers
    * inventory issues - limited storage or ways to recycle loot
    * grindy endgame of hunting Bosses for Experimental weapons
    * fort wave denfense mode is clunky and repetitive

Shame really as the setting/idea is promising. It's as if that was all it ever was "lets make a game in sweden in the 80s with robots" - and it never developed on from that, nobody ever thought about what the overall game experience ought to be.

You simply shoot shoot shoot stuff until they die. I knew this from the start but was hoping that the rest of the gameplay would make up for it (it didn't). It essentially is a first person shooter, period. You shoot stuff, stuff shoots at you, you die, you respawn.

The Environment is a Copy-Paste: Do people in Sweden ALL HAVE the exact same house interiors? Do they all buy the same bathrooms from IKEA? Every freakin' house I've been into is exactly a copy pasted version of the previous one I visited. Some don't even have an extra misplaced chair or table at the living room - they ARE EXACTLY the same INTERIORS. This makes it extremely boring to scavenge houses since every time is the same drill. As you enter, kitchen is exactly on the left including a main table with chairs and a few counters around; on the right is a living room. Straight ahead is a set of stairs leading to a small bathroom on the right and a small bedroom straight ahead. Sometimes there's an extra bedroom on the left. It really becomes boring very fast.

The Story: I only played for 2-hours (for the refund obviously) and so far all you get is: Reach house > reach the shelter you read about > a new note says some people went to a farm, go there > everyone moved to a new town, move there > a group of people headed that way, track them... you get the idea. Nothing exciting or of value to experience.

What also doesn't make sense at all and breaks immersion is the fact that somehow you just return to Sweden after being "secluded in the archipelago with a boat" and find everyone missing. There is working electricity and phones, yet you can't contact anyone. In all this time I've played, I have visited a few small towns and several houses and have only found 1 human dead body. Like, where is everybody? These killer machines are supposed to be killing people on site, yet there is no single drop of blood anywhere, or any sort of indication that a fight happened and everyone is gone. Was there an alien invasion that took everyone away? Rapture? What the hell?

Sad Character Creation: Character creation is very poor for a game that emphasized on how you can make your character as you want. You get the male and female choices, and 6 or 7 preset models. You can't change anything on them. There are a few cool clothing options but that's about it. Many of them look really bad as well, that is, your hairstyle depends on the cap you are wearing. For example, if you wear a backwards baseball cap, you get short hair on the back. If you wear a beanie you suddenly become bald. If you wear a bandana you get puffy afro hair. Why couldn't the hairstyle be part of the character, and subsequent clothing go on top of it? Why do you have to get a hair transplant just to wear a bandana?

Further on customization, for some reason both genders look exactly the same. Picking the custom "Nerd" outfit to start with, you can hardly tell if you are playing a male or a female protagonist (they both get a male haircut in that outfit too). This is possibly due to the fact that if they changed the body type much to reflect each gender better, they would need new animations. And of course, they chose the easy way of making the chassis/body shape of each gender the same.

Graphics and Immersion are Mediocre: Not much to comment on. I played this on Ultra, the FPS was great (~60-80) on my GTX 1080. The outside areas can look beautiful at times when the lighting is not all weird. For the details in the environment, although they did use props around to make the place feel more alive (good work on that!) like a misplaced bicycle, a football, a grill and so on, there is a lack of detail on the actual props. For example, just look at the inside of a vehicle. It looks like a fake plastic toy-car. Also, the environment is completely dead, in the sense that, you can't interact with anything except doors, loot boxes, and (some) light buttons. The content seems to be there to create immersion, but at the same time it kinda breaks it by being hastily done and lack detail, while also making everything "dead" since it is impossible to interact with anything. Finally, it might be the mist and I might be wrong, but the whole outdoors area does feel kind of "blurry," as if there is too much "static" motion blur (I have it off). The graphics can be considered good in my opinion, but could definitely be much much better, and they could definitely do better work on that immersion feeling.

    Other flaws:
THE LOOT RESPAWNS non-stop after quitting/joining.
Guns are only a few and shooting is weird.
There is no stealth at all - you are visible behind walls, fauna, and when behind the enemy.
Solo play is rough. This game is made for Coop, period.

All in all, Generation Zero, is sloppy work.

Is this enough for you? Only you can answer that. If you need frenetic, crowded multiplayer action, the quiet, tense atmosphere here may not appeal to you. More or less, this game feels like you walking around trying to survive. I like that. It's got plenty of imperfections - houses don't really feel "lived in" and start to all feel the same, more robot types would've been nice, maybe some roving bands of rogue humans?

So, repetitive? Yes. But i appreciate what they went for with this game and perhaps the overall vision will be fleshed out more in future expansions or updates. As it stands, GZ is an engaging, tense game that can be a bit of a slog, but I think they were setting an atmosphere, and in that regard they were successful, and I find that atmosphere worthwhile, interesting and fun.

I learned about the new product from Avalanche. From the very beginning I realized that this is a simple, almost budget project, but cool.
    The exit was waiting.
The game came out, collected its average scores and went a bit past me. Although I love such here is AA-releases.
And now I managed to play on a free weekend, even with a friend. It was a fun experience. Graphics in place, optimization too. As least launch on ultras was able even I, with my something a bucket. Apex Engine is cool. Mountain landscapes, forests, rivers are very beautiful. It should have been called "Sweden Engine", and this game is promoted as a technodemku engine.
The world is striking in size, and sometimes emptiness. When you run on an empty field, creeps the feeling that the gameplay is artificially stretched. And when on the same field you run for / from robots, everything falls into place. Wide locations promote and defections, and ambushes, and sniper shooting and all that. All this in the game is, implemented normally. Small guns first, then catches the gun, then it is a problem to find ammo, then go to bigger guns, and then one finds a RPG and does not want to share. That's greedy PI... roegnik. Take care of the shells to RPG, by the way.
Loot in the game fun. On the initial location of lot lot, then it sharply enough, and to find the good stuff, will have to run in invisible places and side quests. Then the meat starts, the enemies die in packs, spent a clip, found two, johnny shot through the legs, someone, resnite, I ran out of adrenaline.
The enemies are also different: in the beginning you need to fight in robotami, then they become more and the situation hotter. Then there are ticks, then hunters, all sorts of walking dudes, and a few bosses still. And if the alarm is raised-you can shoot with enemies for a long time. Really a long time. Even at the level that we got for their 5-10 hours in the game, you can specifically get stuck. Perhaps, because near was boss, but were shooting we with them half an hour of exercise, all patrons squandered, almost all killed, and then boss simply is gone(
What an atmosphere. She's cool. There are a lot of sounds, some invisible animation effects. You get into the game and you don't want to go out. And then I with friend in another settlement killed all enemies, went through field, killed there all enemies, rightly move on a new island (when open map, to watch on its progress, don, that you, of course, cleaned up 2 Islands, but in scale the entire maps this at all nothing. And here we go to the next location, again we see the Church, and then we hear a loud tramp. Slow. I pull out my binoculars and see a giant in the distance. That. From the cover. It's slow, it's heavy, and it's really huge. Spoiler: he's dangerous. We have already got some skills by the time guns heavy score, but mentally was not ready for such a meeting.
    We decided to attack.
Health he well up the wazoo, fired from different angles, beitili, chakali, how much HP, avoided him, hiding in the shelter. He once hit-raises all the Windows. The second time will hit - maybe to knock him down. It is slow, even a little predictable, but it is a real giant robot, exactly as it can be imagined. The battle with him is a test of speed, accuracy and agility. And victory is victory. Best prize. Deserved award.
And also in the game there is some pumping, and we found a couple of bugs, in General, nothing critical, everything is solvable.

The AI is abysmal and gets stuck in doors and walls, the weapons are rather boring.. and the enemies are pretty much all the same and lack variety.

Why is it still an 8/10 for me? - well, not for the gameplay .. i just like wandering around in an 80s technicolour Scandinavia ...

but objectively .. taking it as a GAME - i would give it a 4/10 for being barely average.

I guess, 3 years after it's initial release, it has solved almost all the issues people had, when they first played this game.
Now with the free Landfall Update it's getting almost to crowded, with the additional "party" inhabiting this island, but still fun to play.
People who like to travel and explore and are not that storydriven, will love this game, it's so much fun!

Really enjoying this game now. I tried it a while back before the added content, and it felt empty and I didn't like the combat.
Now I love it. The map is huge, the atmosphere is spot on, and I really enjoy the combat.
When I kill the bigger machines, it is very satisfying. The world doesn't feel as empty, so I actually enjoy running (or riding a bike) to spots on the map to explore. I

The animation of the movement on the bike is tragic, better not to talk about the movement itself. Pistol unusable, the shotgun went, if one was lucky and a sufficient number of first aid kits. The submachine gun worked best for me, when I was able to deal with 7-10 basic enemies on my own. Otherwise, the most used was a hunting rifle. But what about the game itself? The story may seem interesting, but after a walk through a few cities and the military bases are getting bored. The same thing over and over again. And that's the problem with the whole game. It is boring, its enemies are boring and stupid. It's a pity, the game had the potential, but to constantly find unusable waste, go through every barracks where there is nothing, loot cars and shoot running robots. That's the whole game. Expand

The objects, consumables are dull, the graphic besides the map is ugly, dull, low-grade. You don't have too much weapons at all.

I played this alone (nobody wanted to play this game with me) so I am not sure if more player brings more enemy, but the enemies are definitely NOT ENOUGH for even a single player. It just makes the game even more empty.

I don't know about this engine, but definitely has something to do with the half-life / F.E.A.R. engine. Similar colors and the spider-like mini-robot is entirely the same as the face-attacker in half-life. The AI feels also very similar, and here is the good part:

the action, the fights in the game are extremely good. The AI is unbelievably good (in most cases). It gives real fight feeling into the game. It is painfully missing from other games. The designer of the enemies has done an awesome job, the robots looks evil and complex, the damage system hits the nail, the usage of weapons are actually good. This is that awesome that you eventually forgive the lack of everything else.

The rpg elements are also not bad, but just when your character leveled to be a real match to the machines, the game ends (of course, it never ends technically).

So in summary: a very unique fighting fps experience, beautiful map, and seriously, nothing else.

Nice graphic style, but absolutely stupid AI that could see and shoot you through the walls.
In coop you could connect to the other player that has opened all spots on map and use fast travel to find new areas.
Spawn spots and mechanic are broken.
Not worth it. At least now.

I just couldn't get into it after the few hours I put in. I decided not to see this one through and totally take it out of my back log too. Even if they do decide to download it, I'm not sure if I'll be able to get back into it. It's the definition of fine. Expand

The game lacks content. Yes, it features a huge, beautiful map, but it is filled with 3 types of houses, and 5 types of robots, randomly scattered around the interest points. So, you end up walking to the next point, killing the exact same robot 10 times, running up the same stairs and opening the same box. Afterwards, you return to your base, and craft... ammo. Tons of ammo. It takes a crazy amount of ammo to down an enemy, and they just keep getting chonkier. I'm talking 2k bullets, or 30 rockets.
The game is clearly not ment to be played alone. At one point, I arrived to the new location, and there were like 50 enemies. And I knew I would need like 400 rockets and an hour of clicking left mouse button to get rid of them. This is where I quit.
The game does have some strenghts, for example good visuals, nice sound effects, a lot of cosmetics that can be crafted freely, nice gunplay and weapon modification system.
But the gameplay feels extremely repetitive, and not rewarding at all. And, while I did have some fun in first 3 hours, the game offered nothing new and got boring pretty fast. While it could be a good hunting sim, it takes way more to make an FPS.

An interesting take on the post-apocalyptic genre, full of beautiful vistas and a streamlined interface, but moments of awe are punctuated with run-ins with the buggy and inconsistent AI.
