Campaign is amazing. Otherwise this would be a 0/10. Multiplayer is too broken to even go on a rant about it, because the game doesn't deserve the words. Also the game crashes periodically and doesn't keep accurate track of stats.

Bien MEDIOCRE, olvidable y MUY mejorable.

What a waste ... I'm a longtime fan of the series. And the fourth part was good and promising, but this is a turn in the completely wrong direction.

    Fights are hellishly boring.
Too many one-shots out of nowhere and too little enemy variety. There are a lot of enemies who are almost not dangerous, but require a long and tedious shooting at one point on their ass or somewhere else.
Constant babysitting with ai companions, plus one-shots, plus checkpoints, plus boring shooting at large enemies at one point and you get at times the most incredibly hellishly boring repetitive gameplay.
    Open arenas are pointless timewasters.
And oh god, hire good writers please.
What is this miserable cliched “Luke I'm Your Father” plot? You destroy plot potentials for locusts! They could have had a centuries-old history, and now they have nothing.
And, I laughed to the pain in my stomach over the choice that you suddenly give me. I see what you did here. You collect statistics and try to understand whether it is possible to bury old gears or fans are not yet ready to swallow your pathetic new gears. I'm not on your side on this

The game looks good, but nothing groundbreaking or up to the standards some have been advertising. Truth be told I find the material authoring and asset definition around the environment quite average, if not below expectation. Gameplay is pretty much the same as it has always been. There is really not much to say here unfortunately. Get it on game pass, play it and move on. Collapse

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. So I was playing Act I, genuinely enjoying a solid Gears experience. The combat has been tweaked a lot better this time around compared to Gears 4. You no longer have to spend half an hour on a miniboss(that's what it felt like). Minibosses have health bars and take far less to kill than before. It's not all good, though. Jumpers can totally waste you with barrages unless you hide behind tall cover to gradually whittle their health. They weren't AS aggressive in Gears 4, here it's barrage after barrage with no delay between.

So yeah, I was thoroughly enjoying just about everything, the gameplay, the graphics, the story, when the game went FULL WOKE. We had a character assassination moment, because men bad, then you start Act II with the girl and this REALLY bothered me. Del never shuts up about how great she is, constantly kissing her ♥♥♥ and praising her, the Great Feminist Savior.

Also, tell me if you've heard this woke story before: she is the ONE, she is the KEY to EVERYTHING. The retcon in Gears 5 is mighty strong, they're insinuating the Locust were just a science experiment created by Men. Men BAD, do you get it? Oh and JD returns in Act 3 and starts kissing her ♥♥♥ as well. ALL PRAISE THE WOMAN.

The first act is classic gears, but Act 2 and 3 are open world Ubisoft crap filled with.....filler side missions. Yes, side missions in a Gears game. So, rather than the well designed levels of past games, you now have your typical empty open world with around 10 side activities for Acts 2 and 3. It's utter ♥♥♥♥♥.

The dialogue... Oh god... Whoever was responsible for the dialogue: You're not funny. Your jokes are not funny and your writing is cringe-inducing. The protagonists act like characters out of a teen drama novel. God forbid there would have been a single line of dialogue where they don't apologize for something, act insulted, or attempt to show their gratitude in the most exaggerated manner imaginable.
I got Mass Effect Andromeda flashbacks while playing this game; that should tell you something about the quality of the writing.

It's time to bring Marcus Fenix out of retirement. I'm genuinely sick of the new protagonists.

Salvataggi corrotti e interazioni impossibili fra i maggiori. I stopped counting how many time my character just sits there to get shot, because of how the servers handle lag. My connection is top notch and my ping is never over 60, yet damage doesn't register, character just sits there to get shot, it is a joke.
The next big thing that breaks everything with the game is the ''micro'' transactions. TC is greedier than Activision. Their requirement to grind for items is just plain ridiculous. For a character online you have to grind for a week if not more, and even them it is not guaranteed you will get it, since they put a bunch of small things you have to do in escape and horde, which has to do with special character bosses, which may or may not spawn. Or spend $5 per character...see how easy this is. Disgrace! Greed and incompetence. There is no variety in multiplayer. There are 4 maps on rotation. That's it - 4! WTF is this? It's a joke.

Gears 5, at least as far as the campaign is concerned, is unquestionably the worst in the series by a considerable margin. The Gears series as a whole is nothing if not consistently mediocre, making me wonder if there was something going on behind the curtain to cause the baffling issues present in Gears 5.

The lack of meaningful gameplay iteration has never been more prominent than in 5. There are three new enemies, none of which are particularly threatening or interesting to fight. The general bullet-sponginess of the enemies, a long-standing personal criticism of the series, is the worst it's ever been. Two new guns were added, one of which is a clunkier Lancer and the other of which is irredeemably awful, to the point of being nearly unusable.

However, credit where credit is due: now your robot friend can do things in battle. He can shock enemies, heal you, act as a mobile flashbang, temporarily bring enemies to your side, and do a few other things I can't be bothered to list. This added some interesting dynamics to fights. Unfortunately, the upgrades are unbalanced, and things like the heal and the enemy hacking upgrade are so good that you'd never want to use anything else.

The other gameplay "feature" are open world segments, which bring absolutely nothing to the table. They come with side quests and optional areas to explore, none of which I bothered with because there's nothing the game could possibly reward me with. This is a Gears game. I don't earn EXP, there are no weapon upgrades, and I just don't care enough about the story. The open world segments serve as nothing more than a tedious "go from point A to B to advance the plot."

Speaking of the plot, it's terrible. Like, Gears has never really been lauded for its deep, complex storyline, but the plot of 5 reads like a bad fanfiction. Nothing really happens, the plot is stagnated by constant (sometimes literal) roadblocks, there's a massive revelation that the plot skates right past and then never mentions again, the characters are less likeable than ever, everyone's response to everything is a snarky comment, and there's never any sense of urgency or tension or anything. Nobody feels like they have any idea what they're doing, there never feel like there are any stakes, and the characters are all so unlikeable that many story beats just don't land.

Gameplay wise... it's a Gears game. It plays exactly the same as it did in the first. And that's fun, except when it's not, because Gears games have a bad habit of occasionally feeling very frustrating due to the numerous instakill mechanics. 5 is no exception, except the number of frustrating encounters was much higher than any of the other games. To add to it, there were a number of times where a combat encounter was teased and then... trivialized for comedic effect? It was baffling and broke what little tone the game had already established.

And the last, and most strange part: the game suffered from numeous technical issues. There were many cases where enemy AI got stuck in a loop or broke entirely. Textures failed to load properly on several occasions, cutscenes bugged out in more than one case, and at one point a strange lighting bug caused everyone's hair to appear neon orange. There was also a baffling FOV bug that I have never seen in a video game before, where every time the first player in splitscreen was grabbed, his perspective narrowed inwards and stretched vertically until the next forced perspective change, rendering his screen unplayable until it fixed itself.

In short, there is often little point in writing a review for a Gears of War game, because the reviews already came out in 2006 with the launch of the original game. For Gears 5, it is necessary to make an exception: it is a bad game, and a bad Gears game.

It's essentially a long cut scene interspersed with occasional bursts of frustrating shooting - frustrating if you're playing with a controller, anyway, since there is no aim assist unless you set the difficulty to minimum, and no cursor when you're in cover to give you a clue where you'll be aiming when you pop up to fire. Unless you've marked the centre of your TV with a pen the chances of you actually hitting anything when you pop out of cover without a tedious interval of nudging the thumb sticks (whilst you get peppered with bullets) is virtually zero. I would have expected a series that originated on the XBox to have shooting mechanics that were well tuned for an XBox controller, but it feels like it is built for keyboard and mouse.

Beyond the barely present gameplay the story and characters are profoundly uninteresting (as far as I've progressed so far anyway ... some way into Act 2). I'm so tired of wise-cracking Americans in games, give me something different. Or at least try to make the wise cracks interesting or amusing?

The game is beautiful, of course, can't deny it that, and it runs at a rock solid 60FPS on my rig. Unreal Engine certainly shines and the artists have put a lot of work into getting the most out of it.

    By god it's boring though.

Narratively it's a mess with new enemy designs not really making sense within the world, with one of the main characters from the previous game being effectively ruined then unceremoniously being killed off.

Rod and Phil you guys are not smart and are failing at producing AAA must have 1st party games completely. This game is still just more corporate microtransaction bullsh*t. Do nobody should buy this game. The progression system just like with Gears 4 is trash and not fun. TC and Rod lied to everybody that this game would be players first and it is 100% not. Fun should always be first but Microsoft continues to not understand that as a company. When a progression system pushes you hard to not enjoy the game or not make the best play but instead try to achieve a certain tasks in each multiplayer session you have f*cked the multiplayer. Also instead of Gears 4s grindy lootbox microtrasaction system they've replaced it with a convoluted microtransaction mess with nothing of value to unlock and with no reasonable or fun way to progress toward unlocking anything. The only way to unlock anything of value will cost you at least an extremely excessive extra $40. They clearly marketed this game and redesigned the microtrasaction system to confuse customers and make it difficult for reviewers to warn players all with the main goal to limit outrage during launch. This is unfriendly and unethical behavior. Like with Gears 4 this games player base will die massively as players are left with again a trash progression system that is not centered around fun and the multiplayer gameplay itself. Under no circumstance should you trust TC and Rod again and buy Gears 6 in the future. Gears of War is now a dead franchise that lies and manipulates you. Its not surprising at all that they made Gears 5 crossplatform with PC since they basically killed the franchises playerbase with 4s grindy lootbox microtransactions system. But after this I don't know what TC will do to trick players to buy 6. I believe this game just spent the last bit of trust players had with TC and Rod. For me this game was going to decide if I switched to PlayStation for next gen and this game has decided it for me Microsoft is not serious about creating Fun AAA games they are not PlayStation and they are certainly not a Nintendo. Microsoft has taken yet again another stupid pointless approach to gaming and blowing player trust. but for many this was Microsofts last chance. This game just one PlayStation 5 the gen console war.

The game was broken on launch date, till today there's some achievements don't track properly. Many of them are too much time consuming and very boring, repetitive, doesn't enrich the gaming experience.

Putting that aside, the campaing was only ok, the open world areas are a waste, trying to be a filler to an uninteresting campaing. It has some good firefights but overall aren't worthy.

Putting that aside, the campaing was only ok, the open world areas are a waste, trying to be a filler to an uninteresting campaing. It has some good firefights but overall aren't worthy. The difficulty on this game is based on how many want to screw/punish you on Campaign/horde/escape.

Graphics are good but the general performance at least on PC is irregular, random stuttering during matches 'cause probably it loads custom weapon skins when they're pick up, if the game is on HDD like on Xbox One, there's a high time response causing such stuttering, also when bosses spawns, is annoying. The first years was horrible with random crashes and most sometimes BSOD, alongside the GW502 error, the only game with worse performance was Gears of War 4, common denominator: TC poor programming.

Campaign DLC is very short, tasteless, you're about to get action too late. Too many sections where you only walk without sprint, you can't skip some of those dialogues ingame.

Escape mode is entertaining but abuses on pretty generic assets, if isn't on ice levels, are factory levels, too boring see the same maps accommodated in different ways. The majority of claases aren't suitables for many hives, forcing you use some specific classes, for those skilled players isn't a issue, but actually if you like for example some class and want to use it on hives with huge disavantage, it won't be enjoyable after all. Those who beat all hives with the "worst" classes doesn't represent the average player trying to have fun in a sense not everybody have the same skill.

Horde mode with daily modifiers present the same problem with only using certain classes to beat it more easily, despite that, is a disaster play a team based game with people that play the opposite, for example, an assault class that uses explosives, some players use it entirely as engineer, all because this bad game design is so open causing any player do whatever they want, not matter if they do it to the detriment of the team.

Versus is a total mess, I didn't mention that PVE had several changes, some positives, other were for worst, in versus was the worst, the gunplay doesn't feel enjoyable, all related with competitive like earn rewards, rankings, etc. feels more like a full time job than actually enjoying a game.
Maps designs only improved with the latest released, the rest are just generic artistically.

The service model on this game is predatory, exclusive expensive skins and the majority of them are incomplete due the scorcher was added after. If you don't buy them, you can earn coins in an insane grind. The Iron is useless, only if you want to get the skins asap 1 week before the rest can earn them through playing, and you can't use it to get those exclusive skins like Chrome Steel.

Talking about coins and iron, TC made something called boost, mainly to make more players addicted on focus only on level up asap, they made less events to make players buy this boost, otherwise it'll take a lot of time to level up, and there's some achievements for level up, so, basically pay for earn it.

The grind to level up classes and cards are ridiculous, some necessary cards are unlocked after a lot of hours playing, if you want to go on faster, you need to play on Master, but of course if you play it without cards you'll be punished horribly, so playing in lower difficulties doesn't help due the horrible reward system, giving you repeated cards you don't need. In the first years of this game it was worse.

Overall game only can be enjoyed with a close group of friends, but after all disasters there's no real incentive to play. TC made a bunch of players only focused on unlock stuffs, play for rewards instead of play for fun.

In conclussion, is a irregular game, but with a very bad developer behind, poor costumer support, poor treatment to the user, random stuttering/crashes on high end PCs but being a minority, who cares? And finally the constant changes since the game was launched, different versus tuning, the change from heroes to classes, adding/removing stuffs in skill cards, etc. It just shows they have no f#@!cking idea on what to do. One of the worst studios I ever seen. I'll never confident

Pretty mediocre rip-off of gears. 4 was pretty bad, relegating all the good characters we like to 2nd rate support roles, but this one which replaces big gruff wise cracking Marcus with a whiny annoying passive aggressive girl is just offensive. Who can honestly say they thought this character was likeable?
Gameplay is uninspired and adds only gimmicks while cutting down on the core cover

Feels like a bad fan project. Also, many technical issues such as being incompatible with headset mics. Never fixed of course.

SÓLO TENIENDO EN CUENTA EL MODO CAMPAÑA:
    Puntos negativos:

WORST checkpoints ever. Even if you have beaten huge wave of enemies or one big enemy which takes a lot of time on hard difficulty (normal is boring because you don't feel any resistance at all) and die randomly from one grenade or rocket of last enemy (it oneshotes you no matter what which is REALLY frustrating) or there's another wave coming and you died at the end of it - you gottaWORST checkpoints ever. There are many bugs when enemy just stops and does nothing and you can't go forward because he's alive and you have to search for him. I had a bug when in kraken fight it just didnt open last eye so i had to do all the fight AGAIN.
Dumb matriarch fight. Everything what makes big enemies strong is their huge hp bar so you have to fire 300 bullets in one of them which is stupid old game design.
People say graphics is good and most of the time it's true, but even with ultra textures its' ok but not everywhere.
Plot is boring, relationships between characters are made SO BADLY that it makes no interest at all. And i know that we have this dumb feminism trend but playing 90% of the game as a boring girl in supposedly brutal shooter is't fun
The only good thing in this game is optimisation, which is really good with this graphics, but game itself has so bad game design, plot, checkpoints and ancient gameplay.

Management is terrible, the game is terrible, the game is disproportionately light and heavy, there is no balance, skirmishes with the bosses are long necessary and monotonous. A very bad game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Full of bugs Full of micro-transaction and other licenses items. Dull game play. Horde is now one of the big shame in any gears of wars history. This game is awful avoid like hell N°4 is way way better and N°2 and 3 are the best. I was a fan, now i will avoid this franchise like the plague. As usual devs take us for goats and sell an unfinished product with an awful game play and say to the player it is one of the best game ever. And by the way devs do not care at all about players. Look the forum you will understand. Expand

I give it 1/10 because that which I got to see of the story, I liked. But I've never seen graphical glitches this sever not this aggressive, ever, in all my years of gaming. Every now and then an object would glitch hard and suddenly exist 5 times at once slightly shifted over eachother with different transparencies. But then Act 2 Chapter 5 happened and it applied to my entire screen. TheI give it 1/10 because that which I got to see of the story, I liked. But then Act 2 Chapter 5 happened and it applied to my entire screen. The whole screen was just getting teared up and pasted 5 times over and over itself slightly shifted each paste and it also came with extreme flickering. After 3 reboots I had to uninstall the game while suffering sever headaches from this glitching. Never in my life, have I seen something like this. Expand

Introduction of open world led to action slowing down a little, but new lore and world-building more than make up for it. [Issue#241, p.30]

Gears 5 plays around with the formula a bit, but it's still at its best when it's just being a solid-ass Gears of War game.

This is an intense blockbuster which delivers its brutal action just as advertised.
